Recent advances in imaging sensors and digital light projection technology have facilitated rapid progress in 3D optical sensing, enabling 3D surfaces of complex-shaped objects to be captured with high resolution and accuracy. Nevertheless, due to the inherent synchronous pattern projection and image acquisition mechanism, the temporal resolution of conventional structured light or fringe projection profilometry (FPP) based 3D imaging methods is still limited to the native detector frame rates. In this work, we demonstrate a new 3D imaging method, termed deep-learning-enabled multiplexed FPP (DLMFPP), that allows to achieve high-resolution and high-speed 3D imaging at near-one-order of magnitude-higher 3D frame rate with conventional low-speed cameras. By encoding temporal information in one multiplexed fringe pattern, DLMFPP harnesses deep neural networks embedded with Fourier transform, phase-shifting and ensemble learning to decompose the pattern and analyze separate fringes, furnishing a high signal-to-noise ratio and a ready-to-implement solution over conventional computational imaging techniques. We demonstrate this method by measuring different types of transient scenes, including rotating fan blades and bullet fired from a toy gun, at kHz using cameras of around 100 Hz. Experiential results establish that DLMFPP allows slow-scan cameras with their known advantages in terms of cost and spatial resolution to be used for high-speed 3D imaging tasks. Background and Aims: Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) incidence and risk factors in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have been extensively studied. However, data describing CDI in Chinese patients with IBD are limited. We investigated the cumulative incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of CDI in Chinese IBD patients.Methods: We conducted a retrospective, case-control study of patients hospitalized with IBD and CDI at Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 2010 to December 2015. CDI was diagnosed based on the presence of active symptoms and positive enzyme immunoassay-based stool test results for C. difficile toxin A or B (CDAB). Controls were selected from CDAB-negative patients with IBD and matched by age, gender, phenotypes of IBD and the same time period of CDAB testing at a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio.Results: We identified 60 (7.41%) cases of CDI among 810 patients with IBD, and 137 control cases were selected. Univariate analysis revealed that IBD patients with CDI had higher rates of concurrent corticosteroid use, proton pump inhibitor, antibiotic use, recent hospitalization, parenteral nutrition support, and cytomegalovirus (CMV) coinfection (P < 0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed that concurrent corticosteroid use (odds ratio [OR] = 6.803, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.901-15.954, P < 0.001) and hospitalization within 1 month (OR = 3.028, 95% CI = 1.225-7.480, P = 0.016) were associated with CDI. CMV and C. difficile coinfection (hazard ratio [HR] = 4.185, 95% CI = 1.492-11.736, P = 0.007) as well as disease severity (HR 2.070, 95% CI = 1.006-4.261, P = 0.048) were independently associated with colectomy following CDI.Conclusions: IBD patients with concurrent corticosteroid use and recent hospitalization are at a higher risk of CDI. Background: Conventional endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) are used to estimate the invasion depth of early-stage gastric cancers (EGCs), but estimates made by either technique are often inaccurate. We developed a model to determine the invasion depth of EGCs using conventional endoscopy and EUS findings, with pathology results as the reference.Methods: We performed a retrospective study of 195 patients (205 lesions) diagnosed with gastric cancers who underwent endoscopy and EUS followed by resection. Based on pathology analyses, lesions (n = 205) were assigned to categories of: mucosa invasion or minute invasion into the submucosal layer less than 500 μm from the muscularis mucosae (M-SM1) or penetration of 500 μm or more (≥SM2). The lesions were randomly assigned to derivation (138 lesions) and validation sets (67 lesions). A depth predictive model was proposed in the derivation set using multivariate logistic regression analyses. The discriminative power of this model was assessed in both sets.Results: Remarkable redness (OR 5.42; 95% CI 1.32-22.29), abrupt cutting of converging folds (OR 8.58; 95% CI 1.65-44.72), lesions location in the upper third of the stomach (OR 10.26; 95% CI 2.19-48.09), and deep invasion based on EUS findings (OR 16.53; 95% CI 4.48-61.15) significantly associated with ≥SM2 invasion. A model that incorporated these 4 variables discriminated between M-SM1 and ≥SM2 lesions with the area under the ROC curve of 0.865 in the derivation set and 0.797 in the validation set. In the derivation set, a cut-off score of 8 identified lesions as ≥SM2 with 54% sensitivity and 97% specificity. The model correctly predicted the invasion depth 89.86% of lesions; it overestimated the depth of 2.17% of lesions.Conclusions: We developed a model to identify EGCs with invasion depth ≥SM2 based on endoscopy and EUS findings. Background: An association between microscopic colitis (MC), i.e., lymphocytic colitis (LC) and collagenous colitis (CC), and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) has been noticed. A subset of MC cases may evolve into IBD, and IBD in remission may present as MC in a histologic pattern. Moreover, MC and IBD may coexist in different regions of the bowel. A link between MC and IBD in their pathogenesis is, therefore, suggested. Abnormal mucosal immunity is likely the key.Methods: We reviewed 2324 MC cases in Calgary over 14 years and identified 20 cases evolved into IBD (IBD transformers). 13 of them were further investigated for colonic mucosal lamina propria mononuclear cells (LPMNCs), as opposed to 22 cases whose MC resolved. On their index colonic biopsy immunohistochemistry was performed to detect major T cell subsets characterized by key cytokines and master transcription factors (IFNγ and T-bet for Th1/Tc1, GATA-3 for Th2/Tc2, IL-17 and RORc for Th17/Tc17, FoxP3 for Treg/Tcreg) as well as TNFα+ cells (partly representing Th1). LPMNCs positive for each marker were counted (average number per high-power field).Results: IBD transformers had increased IFNγ+, T-bet+, TNF-α+, and GATA-3+ LPMNCs compared to the MC-resolved cases. The LC-to-IBD subgroup had increased IFNγ+ and GATA-3+ cells compared to the LC-resolved subgroup. The CC-to-IBD subgroup had increased T-bet+, TNF-α+, and GATA-3+ cells compared to the CC-resolved subgroup. Among MC-resolved patients, more TNF-α+ and RORc+ cells were seen in LC than in CC.Conclusion: Th1/Tc1- and TNFα-producing cells, and likely a subset of Th2/Tc2 cells as well, may be involved in the MC-to-IBD transformation. Background: Hovhannisyan et al. first showed evidence of plasticity between Treg and Th17 in the inflamed intestine of Crohn's disease (CD) patients. Our previous report suggests that the inflammatory cytokine milieu generates IL-17 Foxp3 CD4 T lymphocytes which is a crossover population converting Treg subset to Th17 in the peripheral blood of IBD patients. This is considered as an evidence of Treg/Th17 plasticity. Aim: The aim of this study was to characterize a variety of helper T cell crossover population, not limited to IL-17 Foxp3 CD4 T lymphocytes, in the lamina propria (LP) of IBD patients. Methods: Fresh colonoscopic biopsies were obtained from patients with CD ( n = 50) and ulcerative colitis (UC, n = 32) and from healthy controls (HC, n = 25). LP mononuclear cells were assessed for intracellular cytokines and transcription factors such as IFNγ, IL-13, IL-17, IL-22, T-bet, Gata-3, RORγt, and Foxp3 using multicolor flow cytometry to detect subsets of LP CD4 T lymphocytes. Results: Patients with IBD demonstrated increased crossover populations in IL-17 Foxp3, T-bet Foxp3, Gata3 Foxp3, RORγt Foxp3 populations compared to HC. There was an inverse correlation of Harvey-Bradshaw index with Gata3 Foxp3 population in CD patients, while IL-13 Foxp3 population was directly correlated with Mayo clinical scores in UC patients. Furthermore, total IL-22 expressing cells as well as Th22 and IL-22 Th1 populations were decreased in UC compared to CD and HC. Conclusion: IBD patients exhibit the increased crossover populations in LP Treg cells toward Th2 and Th17 compared to HC. Pancreatitis is a rare, life-threatening complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study aimed to describe the clinical features of acute pancreatitis (AP) and chronic pancreatitis (CP) in patients with SLE. Data of patients who fulfilled the revised criteria of the American Rheumatism Association for diagnosis of SLE were retrospectively analyzed. SLE activity was graded according to the SLE Disease Activity Index. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to find out independent associations. Survival rates were estimated by using Kaplan-Meier plots. This study included 5665 SLE patients admitted between January 1983 and January 2014, of whom 52 patients were diagnosed with pancreatitis. Pancreatitis prevalence in SLE patients was 0.92 % (52/5665). AP (0.8 %, 46/5665) was more prevalent than CP (0.1 %, 6/5665), presented mostly during active SLE, and affected more organs. Hypertriglyceridemia occurred in 76.9 % of AP patients and in none of the CP patients. AP patients were divided into severe ( n = 10) or mild ( n = 20) cases. The average triglyceride level in severe AP cases was higher than that in mild AP cases ( P = 0.006), and the mortality rate of lupus-associated AP was 32.6 % (15/46). Concomitant infections and thrombocytopenia were independently associated with poor prognosis ( P < 0.001, P = 0.028, respectively). There were significant differences in the clinical manifestations of AP and CP. Patients with severe AP were found to have a higher incidence of concomitant infection and serum triglyceride levels. In order to compare the in vitro effects of crude extracts of broth culture filtrate protein (BCF-P) from the supernatant of an H. pylori liquid culture and epidermal growth factor (EGF) on acid secretion by isolated rabbit gastric parietal cells. Isolated rabbit gastric parietal cells were incubated with BCF-P or EGF for 1 and 12 h. Morphological changes were assessed by electron microscopy, and C-aminopyrine (C-AP) uptake and H-KATP mRNA expression were measured. At 50 µg/mL, BCF-P stimulated acid secretion by parietal cells ( P<0.05) at 1 h but not at 12 h. At 100 µg/mL, BCF-P significantly inhibited histamine-stimulated acid secretion ( P<0.05) and decreased H- KATP mRNA expression in parietal cells, but it was reversed after EGF exposure. Crude extracted proteins from BCF-P damaged the inner cell membrane structure of parietal cells, reduced H-KATP gene expression, and inhibited acid secretion, activities that differed markedly from those of EGF. Uveitis is an autoimmune disease of the eye that refers to a number of intraocular inflammatory conditions. We identified three rare cases of T cell lymphoma diagnosed following an initial presentation of uveitis. This study summarized the clinical features of these rare cases and evaluated the association between uveitis and lymphoma. We analyzed the etiology of uveitis diagnosed in the Department of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine at our hospital. Five patients were diagnosed with uveitis and lymphoma. We present case reports of three patients who were diagnosed with T cell lymphoma following an initial presentation of uveitis. From January 1985 to June 2013, there were 80 cases of uveitis and 1,900 cases of lymphoma in the Department of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine at our hospital. We found five patients that were diagnosed with uveitis and lymphoma; of these, three had a definite pathologic diagnosis of T cell lymphoma. The odds ratio (OR) was 6.08 (95 % confidence interval [CI] of 1.93-14.94, P = 0.002) for the five patients with uveitis and lymphoma, suggesting a significant association. The OR was 3.67 (95 % CI of 1.16-11.65, P = 0.053) for the three patients with uveitis and T cell lymphoma. Uveitis may be a rare presentation of malignant disease, such as lymphoma. Nodular regenerative hyperplasia (NRH) of liver may be one of the leading causes of non-cirrhotic intrahepatic portal hypertension (NCIPH), although the exact relationship is currently unknown. Diagnosis of NRH is relatively difficult and involves surgical pathology, and thus it is necessary to improve the preoperative recognition of NRH. Here, we analyze 15 cases of NRH to better understand this disease. All the liver specimens were microscopically examined by hematoxylin-eosin staining and reticulin and Masson trichrome staining. Diagnoses of NRH were confirmed by pathological examination. Clinically, NRH presents as diffused liver lesions with mildly increased liver enzymes. Portal hypertension is the most common clinical manifestation presenting prominently as splenomegaly, hypersplenism, and esophageal varices bleeding. NRH is often associated with autoimmune or collagen vascular diseases, and such patients often present with a variety of positive autoantibodies and increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), Ig and γ %. Pathological examination of the liver showed diffuse small regenerative nodules without fibrous septa and obstructive portal venopathy. For those patients with portal hypertension of unknown cause and preserved liver function, especially, those combined with autoimmune diseases, NRH should be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To evaluate the association of the IBD5 locus to the predisposition of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), a series of meta-analyses between five IBD5 variants ( OCTN1 C1672T, OCTN2 G-207C, OCTN1/2 TC haplotype, IGR2096a_1, IGR2198a_1 and IGR2230a_1) and Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) were performed, which included a total of 26 studies. Overall, five IBD5 variants in a per-allele model of inheritance were significantly associated with elevated CD risk (for OCTN1: OR = 1.23, 95% CI = 1.16-1.30, P < 0.001; for OCTN2: OR = 1.20, 95% CI = 1.11-1.30, P < 0.001; for IGR2096a_1: OR = 1.36, 95% CI = 1.24-1.46, P < 0.001; for IGR2198a_1: OR = 1.34, 95% CI = 1.24-1.46, P < 0.001; for IGR2230a_1: OR = 1.35, 95% CI = 1.23-1.48, P < 0.001) and OCTN1/2 TC haplotype (OR = 1.32, 95% CI = 1.22-1.43, P < 0.001). In the subgroup analysis, the statistically significant associations were also observed in adult- and pediatric-onset CD and in Caucasians for five IBD5 variants and the OCTN1/2 TC haplotype. A statistically significant increase in the risk of UC was detected in a recessive model of inheritances for OCTN1 (OR = 1.23, 95% CI = 1.08-1.40, P < 0.001), OCTN2 (OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.05-1.33, P = 0.006), IGR2096a_1 (OR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.15-1.62, P < 0.001) and IGR2198a_1 (OR = 1.35, 95% CI = 1.10-1.66, P = 0.004); the increased risks of UC were maintained in the adult and Caucasian subgroups, but not the pediatric subgroup. In summary, our results suggested that the IBD5 locus contributes to the susceptibility of CD in a per-allele manner in adults, children and Caucasians, and the locus contributes to the susceptibility of UC in a recessive manner in adult and Caucasian populations.
