The reproductive process in Octopus maya was analyzed to establish the amount of reactive oxygen species that the embryos inherit from females, during yolk synthesis. At the same time, respiratory metabolism, ROS production, and the expression of some genes of the antioxidant system were monitored to understand the ability of embryos to neutralize maternal ROS and those produced during development. The results indicate that carbonylated proteins and peroxidized lipids (LPO) were transferred from females to the embryos, presumably derived from the metabolic processes carried out during yolk synthesis in the ovary. Along with ROS, females also transferred to embryos glutathione (GSH), a key element of the antioxidant defense system, thus facilitating the neutralization of inherited ROS and those produced during development. Embryos are capable of neutralizing ROS thanks to the early expression of genes such as catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), which give rise to the synthesis of enzymes when the circulatory system is activated. Also, it was observed that the levels of the routine metabolic rate of embryos are almost as high as those of the maximum activity metabolism, which leads, on the one hand, to the elevated production of ROS and suggests that, at this stage of the life cycle in octopuses, energy production is maximum and is physically limited by the biological properties inherent to the structure of embryonic life (oxygen transfer through the chorion, gill surface, pumping capacity, etc.). Due to its role in regulating vascularization, a high expression of HIf-1A during organogenesis suggests that circulatory system development has begun in this phase of embryo development. The results indicate that the routine metabolic rate and the ability of O. maya embryos to neutralize the ROS are probably the maximum possible. Under such circumstances, embryos cannot generate more energy to combat the free radicals produced by their metabolism, even when environmental factors such as high temperatures or contaminants could demand excess energy. The vital survival, maturation, and reproduction rates of Octopus maya were formulated according to the thermal preferences in each stage (juvenile and adult) and the bottom temperature of the Yucatan shelf projected from different shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs): SSP1-5, to describe the species population growth in shallow waters. The dispersion of each individual in the population and the spread of the offshore population were incorporated with an integrodifference equation. For each SSP, the food security of the artisanal fishermen in the Western, Central, and Eastern Yucatan shelf region was analyzed based on the proposed availability, access, and utilization indices of Octopus maya as food. The analysis was complemented with an average monthly protein and income poverty indicators that this species’ shallow water fishery would have the capacity to supply by the year 2100. Although the proportion of the legally O. maya catchable population may be favored with the gradual increase in temperature in the coming years, this increase may not translate into greater food security for the artisanal fishermen who catch this species in shallow waters. Moreover, this fishery alone may not have the capacity to supply the average annual intake of 10.6 kg of protein per person recommended and maintain fishermen and their families above the income poverty line by 2100. Benzophenone-3 (BP-3) is an active ingredient in sunscreen lotions and personal-care products that protects against the damaging effects of ultraviolet rays. Given its worldwide dissemination, it has been linked with harmful effects on aquatic biota; however, its impact is not fully understood calling for further studies. To understand the impacts on an important economically and ecologically species, we evaluated the toxicity of BP-3 during the embryonic development of Octopus maya. Embryos were exposed to increasing concentrations of up to 500 µg BP-3/L until hatching. Antioxidant enzyme activities, oxidative-stress indicators, and B-esterases activities were measured at different developmental phases (organogenesis, activation, and growth). There were no significant differences between treatments, suggesting the lack of production of toxic metabolites that may be related to a protective chorion, an underdeveloped detoxification system, and the experimental conditions that limited phototoxicity. The Novel Object Recognition task (NOR) is widely used to study vertebrates' memory. It has been proposed as an adequate model for studying memory in different taxonomic groups, allowing similar and comparable results. Although in cephalopods, several research reports could indicate that they recognize objects in their environment, it has not been tested as an experimental paradigm that allows studying different memory phases. This study shows that two-month-old and older Octopus maya subjects can differentiate between a new object and a known one, but one-month-old subjects cannot. Furthermore, we observed that octopuses use vision and tactile exploration of new objects to achieve object recognition, while familiar objects only need to be explored visually. To our knowledge, this is the first time showing an invertebrate performing the NOR task similarly to how it is performed in vertebrates. High temperatures alter the physiological condition of Octopus maya embryos, juveniles, and adults, and the time of exposure could have a key role in their thermal tolerance. The present study evaluates the effects of temperature and exposure time on octopus juveniles obtained from a thermally stressed female and a control female when exposed to optimal (25 °C) and high temperatures (30 °C) for 20 and 30 days, respectively. The results showed a transgenerational temperature effect that was expressed with low survival, depressed routine resting and high metabolic rates. Moreover, a collapse of antioxidant defense enzymes and high levels of oxidative damage products were detected in juveniles from thermally stressed females. Stress was lethal for animals acclimated at 30 °C, while the performance of juveniles acclimated at optimal temperature (25 °C) was conditioned by high oxidative stress levels and a reduction of the high metabolic rate (HMR) even after 30 days of experiment. In contrast, juveniles from the non-thermally stressed female had an optimal performance when acclimated at 25 °C but at 30 °C, they had a comparatively higher HMR during the first 8 days. These results suggest energy surplus in those animals to escape from warming scenarios before experiencing oxidative damage accumulation. Anthropogenic global warming generates profound metabolic alterations in marine ectotherm invertebrates capable of leading a wide range of these species to extinction. To evaluate the cross-generational effect of thermal stress on the cephalopod Octopus maya, groups of females were exposed at 24 and 30 °C until spawn. After, embryos of each female group were incubated at 24 and 30 °C allowing for evaluating the transgenerational effects on embryos exposed to high and low temperatures. We analyzed the morphology, oxygen consumption, antioxidant mechanisms, and oxidative stress indicators of the embryos. The results demonstrate that thermally stressed females produced smaller eggs with lower yolk content as observed in nonthermally stressed females. Also was observed that embryos from females acclimated at 30 °C had lower body weight and higher respiratory rates when compared with nonthermal stressed females. Embryos from females acclimated at 30 °C showed a collapse of the antioxidant defense system measured as lower both catalase activity and total glutathione concentrations. Additionally, glutathione-s transferase activity increased in embryos incubated at 30 °C and in females maintained at high temperatures in a clear deleterious and cross-generational effect of thermal stress on this octopus species. No changes were observed in the activity of B-esterases in octopus embryos linked with the thermal stress of females. Embryos from thermally stressed females had smaller sizes, less yolk, and higher metabolic rates. Additionally, a collapse in the antioxidant defense system was observed indicating they were unable to control the high load of ROS and oxidative damage, which was partially acquired by maternal inheritance. No ecotoxicological information exists on phenanthrene (Phe) exposure in cephalopods, animals of commercial and ecological importance. This study investigated the effect of Phe on two B-esterases, Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and Carboxylesterases (CbE), in Octopus maya embryos. Octopus embryos were exposed to different treatments: control (seawater), solvent control (seawater and DMSO 0.01%), 10 and 100 µg/L of Phe. AChE and CbE activities were measured at different developmental stages (blastula, organogenesis, and growth). B-esterase activities increased in control and solvent control as the embryos developed, showing no statistically significant differences between them. On the other hand, the embryos exposed to Phe had significant differences from controls, and between the high and low concentrations. Our results indicate that B-esterases are sensitive biomarkers of exposure to Phe in O. maya. Still, complementary studies are needed to unravel the toxicodynamics of Phe and the implications of the found inhibitory effect in hatched organisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Under-detection of HIV/AIDS still burdens many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Our randomized trial investigated the effects of financial incentives and a behavioral nudge to induce HIV testing and learning HIV status in Ecuador. In the control group, 12.2% of participants agreed to testing, and 5.3% learned results. A financial incentive paid at testing increased the fraction of participants tested by 50.1 percentage points (95% CI 38.8 to 61.4) and the fraction who learned their status by 8.9 percentage points (95% CI 5.3 to 12.5); the nudge had no effect. The HIV-positive rate was 1.2% in the control group, and incentives prompted a 4.7 percentage point (95% CI 0.5 to 8.9) higher proportion of HIV-positive detection. Incentives also induced earlier testing, suggesting reduced procrastination. This suggests that information with appropriately timed small financial incentives can improve HIV testing and detection of new cases in the general population in LMIC settings. In this work, we conduct a comprehensive computational study of the optical and photothermal properties of multifunctional α-Fe2O3/Au/SiO2 nanorice matryoshka nanoparticles using a combination of boundary element method, finite element method, and discontinuous Galerkin time-domain method. The magnetic core in the nanorice allows their use as a contrast agent in nuclear magnetic resonance technique as well as dragging and rotating the nanoparticles with an external magnetic field, while the plasmonic counterpart enables the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonances. We show that both longitudinal and transverse plasmonic resonances induced within the hybrid asymmetric nanoparticle can be sintonized into the 650–900 nm range of the electromagnetic spectrum, where the absorption of tissue is minimal. Thus, it is possible to heat the nanoparticle's local surrounding environment, making the proposed nanorice particles good candidates for thermal ablation treatment of cancer cells. We show that the local temperature in the nanorice surroundings can be increased by up to 80 K while illuminating the hybrid system at the resonant frequency of the longitudinal plasmon mode with typical and reasonable optical power density of 5 W/cm2. Latinx college students are at high risk of suffering from depressive symptoms. A factor posited to influence depressive symptoms among Latinx college students is racial/ethnic discrimination. However, the mechanisms which link racial/ethnic discrimination to depressive symptoms are not well understood. This study examined the mediating role of racism-related vigilance and sleep-related factors (i.e., sleep quality, sleep efficiency) on the relationship between perceived intergroup racial/ethnic discrimination and depressive symptoms. Participants were 194 Latina/o college students enrolled at a Midwestern university designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution. Path analysis was conducted to investigate whether racism-related vigilance and sleep-related factors (i.e., sleep quality, sleep efficiency) are potential pathways in the relationship between intergroup racial/ethnic discrimination and depressive symptoms. Path analysis revealed that racism-related vigilance and sleep quality sequentially mediated the effect of perceived intergroup racial/ethnic discrimination on depressive symptoms. Sleep efficiency did not mediate the relationship between racial/ethnic discrimination and depressive symptoms. This study is among the first to document that intergroup racial/ethnic discrimination is negatively related to mental health through both cognitive and behavioral mechanisms. The determination of in vitro digestibility of acid proteases in the digestive gland (DG) of adult O. vulgaris (> 1.2 kg) was performed, using the flesh of four different prey species (mackerel, Scomber scombrus; green crab, Carcinus maenas; swimming crab, Necora puber; Shortfin squid, Illex coindetii). For each, four processing treatments were applied: (1) frozen, (2) boiled at 100 °C for 1 min, (3) lyophilized, and (4) oven dried at 70 °C. A pH-Stat method was used to determine in vitro digestibility at pH 3. Results showed that digestibility was higher for lyophilized and frozen flesh, compared to the other treatments involving heating (boiled and oven dried), regardless of the species tested. Also, differences were found between species, within each treatment, with higher digestibility for crab (N. puber) and squid (I. coindetii). Regarding "in vitro" acid proteases digestibility, which is the most important for O. vulgaris, results indicate that heat treatments close and/or higher than 70 °C promoted changes in the flesh that prevented or reduced their assimilation by the DG of O. vulgaris. The circadian clock is regulated at the molecular level by feedback circuits of a group of genes known as "clock genes", which establish a mechanism that controls circadian cellular physiology to maintain the balance between cell proliferation, response to DNA damage and apoptosis. Alterations in the expression of clock genes due to genetic or epigenetic mechanisms have been associated with multiple diseases including cancer. Even some clock genes such as the Per1, Per2, Bmal1 genes have been proposed as tumor suppressor genes, with a relevant role during carcinogenesis. At the molecular level, multiple mechanisms of molecular control have been described to link circadian transcription, cell cycle control, and tumorigenesis. In addition, recent findings describe an epigenetic control of circadian transcription, at the level of DNA methylation as well as in the modifications of histones. However, the link between the circadian epigenome and cancer remains unclear. In this article, we review the evidence that suggests a relationship between alterations in the expression of clock genes, with the development of cancer, from the epigenetic landscape. Introduction: Gliomas are tumors of the central nervous system. Despite new classifications, they are still divided in low and high-grade gliomas, being the latter of greater malignancy. The degree of malignancy is directly related with the angiogenic activity in tumoral tissues. We measured VEGF concentrations and angiogenic capacity in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from patients with high and low-grade gliomas. The purpose of this study was to find a biomarker that contributes in the differential diagnosis and prognosis of gliomas. Methods: CSF was obtained from 19 individuals: 8 with low-grade gliomas, 6 with high-grade gliomas and 5 controls. VEGF concentration in CSF was measured by ELISA and the angiogenic capacity was measured by chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) test. Results: The VEGF concentration was higher in patients with high-grade gliomas, compared to patients with low-grade gliomas and controls (2860 pg/mL ± 975 vs. 182.6 ± 37.1 and 47.4 ± 0.4, respectively). On the other hand, CSF from patients with high-grade gliomas generated a higher microvascular density (MVD) than patients with low-grade gliomas and controls (13.23 ± 0.6 vessels/9000μm2 vs. 9.3 ± 0.3 and 7.92 ± 0.2, respectively). Interestingly, there was not statistical differences in both VEGF levels and angiogenic capacity in patients with low-grade gliomas and controls. Calreticulin is an endoplasmic reticulum-resident, calcium-binding, stress-produced, chaperone protein that serves multiple functions and is widely distributed in eukaryotic cells. Exogenously applied recombinant calreticulin solution, markedly enhanced the rate and quality of skin wound healing. These modulatory effects are more efficient than commercially available topic platelet-derived growth factor ointments (Regranex®). Trypanosoma cruzi calreticulin is more effective in equimolar terms to human counterpart in accelerating skin wound healing. While the effect of externally added recombinant parasite calreticulin on wound healing has been reported, the domains responsible for these modulatory effects have not yet been established. Here, recombinant parasite calreticulin and some of its domains were tested to assess their influence in increasing proliferation and migration of fibroblasts in vitro and rat skin wound healing in vivo. Herein, we propose that Trypanosoma cruzi whole calreticulin or some of its domains are differentially involved in the modulation of wound-healing cell migration and proliferation, and cosmetic outcome. The present study aimed to evaluate the health status of Octopus maya females on different days after spawning (days 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40). A total of 25 O. maya females were examined in terms of physiological (i.e., weight loss, hepatosomatic and gonadosomatic indexes, and hemocyanin, protein, glucose, cholesterol, and acylglycerides concentrations in plasma) and immunological variables (i.e., total hemocyte count, hemagglutination, and phenoloxidase activity). We hypothesized that O. maya females should maintain their physiological integrity throughout the post-spawning period until the hatching of the offspring. Results showed that the physiological and immunological indicators measured in post-spawning females significantly changed with time. Loss of body weight over time and a decrease in the hepatosomatic and gonadosomatic indexes were observed. Hemolymph components showed variations that reflect the consumption of reserves and coincide with an increased immune process of hemagglutination and phenoloxidase activity in hemocytes. Our results demonstrate that O. maya females are adapted to maintain an adequate state of health to care for their spawn despite the long period of starvation and contribute to the identification of the mechanisms involved in maintaining the integrity of these animals during one of the most critical phases of their life cycle. The genus Octopus has been treated as a 'catch all' taxon because many species have morphological similarities. To investigate the taxonomic status of the Octopus species in the Tropical Northwestern Atlantic (TNA) and the Tropical Southwestern Atlantic (TSA), we sampled Octopus insularis Leite and Haimovici, 2008 in three areas of the northeastern Brazilian coast, four Brazilian oceanic islands and one island in Western Caribbean, Mexico. Samples of Octopus maya Voss and Solís, 1966 were obtained from the cultivation center of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Sisal city. Specimens previously identified as Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797 were collected in two regions of southeast Brazil, in an industrial port in Progreso city (southern Gulf of Mexico) and from a fish market in Isla Mujeres, Mexico (Western Caribbean). Molecular species attribution was completed based on morphology of fresh specimens identified by an octopus specialist and then checked against previous identification (cultivation center and GenBank sequences). Molecular analysis of both mitochondrial (cytochrome oxidase I) and nuclear genes (elongation factor-1α), including GenBank data, confirmed that one specimen collected at the Western Caribbean from Mexico and identified as O. insularis, shared the same haplotype of the species from the type locality, indicating the occurrence of this species in the Caribbean Sea. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that 21 GenBank sequences from TNA identified as O. vulgaris grouped within the O. insularis clade and are most likely to be to the latter species. The COI analysis also showed that 18 individuals collected in fishing landings and fish markets, previously identified as O. vulgaris, had the identical haplotype of O. maya collected in the UNAM cultivation center. These results corroborate the misidentification of species in Mexican fisheries. Based on molecular and morphological data we extended the distribution of O. insularis to the TNA and revealed cases of misidentification among the most commercially exploited octopus species in this region. Background: Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) exhibit a low fertility by chronic hyperandrogenemia. Different evidence have shown that androgens could regulate the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis and glucose metabolism. However, it is unclear whether androgens can exert these effects on human endometrial stromal cells. Our goal was to study the protein content of GRP78 (an ER homeostasis marker) in endometria from women with PCOS and healthy women and to assess the GRP78 protein levels and its relationship with glucose uptake on a human endometrial stromal cell line stimulated with testosterone. Methods: Immunohistochemistry assays for GRP78 were performed on endometrial samples obtained from women with PCOS (n = 8) and control women subjected to hysterectomy (n = 8). Western blot analysis for GRP78 and glucose uptake was assessed in a telomerase-immortalized human endometrial stromal cell line (T-HESC) exposed to testosterone for 24 or 48 hours and challenged to an insulin short-term stimulation. Tukey test was performed for human samples comparison. Student t test or ANOVA–Bonferroni test was carried out according to the in vitro experiment. P < .05 was considered as significant. Results: GRP78 stromal immunostaining was reduced in PCOS endometria compared to controls (P < .05). The T-HESC shows a testosterone-dependent downregulation of GRP78 protein content (P < .05), concomitant with half-reduction in glucose uptake compared to controls (P < .05). Moreover, enhanced small interfering RNA against GRP78 messenger RNA leads to a decrease in glucose uptake (P < .05). Such effects were reverted by hydroxyflutamide, an inhibitor of androgen receptor. Conclusion: These results suggest that hyperandrogenemic PCOS environment could compromise the endometrial homeostasis confirmed by the decrease in glucose uptake induced by testosterone and exhibited by stromal cells. Improvement in the osmoregulation capacity via nutritional supplies is vitally important in shrimp aquaculture. The effects of dietary protein levels on the osmoregulation capacity of the Pacific white shrimp ( L. vannamei) were investigated. This involved an examination of growth performance, glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) and Na-K ATPase mRNA expression,, and GDH activity in muscles and gills. Three experimental diets were formulated, containing 25%, 40%, and 50% dietary protein, and fed to the shrimp at a salinity of 25. After 20 days, no significant difference was observed in weight gain, though GDH and Na-K ATPase gene expression and GDH activity increased with higher dietary protein levels. Subsequently, shrimp fed diets with 25% and 50% dietary protein were transferred into tanks with salinities of 38 and 5, respectively, and sampled at weeks 1 and 2. Shrimp fed with 40% protein at 25 in salinity (optimal conditions) were used as a control. Regardless of the salinities, shrimp fed with 50% dietary protein had significantly higher growth performance than other diets; no significant differences were found in comparison with the control. Shrimp fed with 25% dietary protein and maintained at salinities of 38 and 5 had significantly lower weight gain values after 2 weeks. Ambient salinity change also stimulated the hepatosomatic index, which increased in the first week and then recovered to a relatively normal level, as in the control, after 2 weeks. These findings indicate that in white shrimp, the specific protein nutrient and energy demands related to ambient salinity change are associated with protein metabolism. Octopus maya is a carnivorous species and protein is the main energy source. During the present study, two different dietary protein levels (40 and 60% CP) were offered to octopuses as specifically designed artificial diets, to determine protein needs and the effects on metabolism. Frozen crab ( Callinectes spp.) was used as control. Results obtained demonstrated that crab remains as one of the best diets for O. maya. The artificial diet with 60% CP produced a low but positive growth rate, and at times, a physiological response similar to that observed in octopuses fed crabs. The present results show the capacity of O. maya juveniles to adjust their digestive enzymes to different types of food and protein level, and this appears to be well correlated with octopus growth. General proteases and trypsin from the pancreas were well correlated with growth rates. A low activity was observed in octopuses fed 40% PC diet (negative growth rate), while a high activity was present in octopuses fed 60% CP diet and crabs (low and high growth rate, respectively). In contrast, these same enzymes were inducted in the salivary glands of octopuses fed with the diet that promoted weight loss (40% CP diet), while a reduced activity was observed in octopuses fed crabs. Energy budget indicates that the animals ingested more than 1,000 kJ week kg; with such energy, octopuses should satisfy their physiological demands such as was observed when animals were fed crab ( I = 1,300 kJ week kg; P = 834 kJ week kg). Lipid composition of the mantle and digestive gland of Octopus vulgaris that were not fed for 27 days were determined. Every 3 days, three octopuses were killed and samples of the mantle and the digestive gland (DG) were taken, in order to determine total lipids as well as lipid classes and fatty acids. Composition in total lipids (TL) for the mantle was similar until day 21, then decreased and remained similar until the end of the experiment. Composition in total lipids for the DG decreased significantly after 3 days, then remained similar until day 21, and then decreased until the end of the experiment. As for the lipid classes, in the DG the main components were triglycerides and sterol esters. Sterol esters suffered strong reductions after 10 days of starvation, while triglycerides remained similar until day 21 and then decreased until the end of the experiment. Cholesterol decreased gradually throughout the experimental period. For polar lipids, phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine increased during the first 3 days and then decreased throughout the experiment. In the mantle, the only neutral classes that decrease were triacylglycerols and sterol esters, while no polar lipid classes decreased in this organ. It was noticeable the decrease in almost all fatty acids in the DG after 3 days of starvation, while in the mantle there were no differences in fatty acid concentrations during the experiment. Episodes of hypoxia are common in the marine environment, and their ecological effects depend, in part, on their severity and duration. Many species of decapod crustaceans reside in areas with fluctuating oxygen regimens. Physiological mechanisms enhance the ability of these crustaceans to cope with acute episodes of hypoxia. Southern king crab, Lithodes santolla, fishery is important in the south of South America, and some data describe fishing zones with low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels (3.5 mgO2 l−1, i.e., 8.3 kPa). Our main objective was to evaluate the effect of dissolved oxygen level on respiratory metabolism, nutritional physiology, and immunological condition of L. santolla juveniles. Individual animals were exposed for 10 days to different oxygen tensions (2.1, 4.2, 8.5, 12.7, and 21.1 kPa) to quantify the oxygen consumption rate; thereafter, blood oxyhemocyanin (Hc), protein concentration, as well as hemocytes, were sampled. Freeze-dried animals were dissected, and digestive gland metabolites (glycogen, protein, glucose, cholesterol, acylglycerol, and lactate) and digestive enzyme activity (general protease, trypsin, and chymotrypsin), as well as gill lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, were quantified. In the present study, Lithodes santolla showed a critical oxygen tension between 4 and 9 kPa, indicating that this crab species is more sensitive to DO than other crustacean species. Protein and Hc concentrations followed a similar pattern to that of oxygen consumption. Digestive gland glycogen and protein concentration did not change after 10 days at different oxygen exposures, but glucose, cholesterol, and acylglycerol concentrations decreased linearly and proportionally to the available oxygen in the water. As in other decapods, chymotrypsin showed over 90% of the total quantified proteases activity. Chymotrypsin activity together with total proteases and trypsin was not affected by the environmental oxygen tension. Gill LDH and digestive gland lactate followed a similar increase at lower environmental oxygen tension but dropped sharply at the lowest tension (2.1 kPa). Dissolved oxygen affected also the immune system through reduction of hemocytes. This could provide a critical window for opportunistic pathogens to become established when crabs are exposed to hypoxic conditions. L. santolla juveniles show a moderate tolerance to low oxygen availability by modifying the concentration of hemolymph proteins, mainly OxyHc, some digestive gland metabolites, and by activating the anaerobic metabolism. To assess the health status of aquatic ecosystems, specialized tools and strategies are needed to study the changes induced in oceanic systems by human activity. The Gulf of Mexico has a tremendous ecological importance because of its biological diversity. The present paper defines baseline levels of blood metabolites and immune components for wild tropical populations of F. duorarum: an important shrimp species of the Gulf of Mexico. Osmotic pressure (OP), osmotic capability (OC), oxy hemocyanin (OxyHc), glucose, digestive gland glycogen, proteins, cholesterol, lactate, acylglycerols (AG) were used as indicators of physiological and nutritional status; phenoloxidase activity, quantification of hemocytes, as well as respiratory burst, were used to assess the immunological status. There were no differences between sexes in either live weight or physiological and nutritional conditions. Only total blood protein, oxy hemocyanin, and digestive gland glycogen showed normally distributed data. All the remaining blood parameters were right- or left-skewed. A median live weight of 9.5 g was registered for the sampled population. Median values of 955 and −91.85 mOsm/kg (OP and OC, respectively) were obtained, indicating that shrimp were slightly hypo-osmotic in relation to sea water. A proportion of 27% of OxyHc of the total protein (OxyHc/Prot) was calculated for the F. duorarum population. ProPO and PO showed no normal distribution and were not different between sexes. A right-skewed distribution was observed. Total hemocytes, hyaline (HC) and granular cells (GC) showed differences between sexes, with higher values in females than males. A similar proportion of HC (69%) and GC (30%) of total cells were observed between sexes. Basal and activated respiratory burst showed differences between sexes with higher values for females than for males. The current results provide indicators of the nutritional and immune status of F. duorarum that can be used to detect changes in trophic relations and health at a population level. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of a natural prey (the crab Callinectes sp.) and an artificial diet (pellet with squid paste and offered as a paste) on the survival and assimilation efficiency of subadult octopuses with 486 g of initial live weight. In order to reach this goal, the effects of the type of diet on energetic balance were assessed by recording ingestion rate ( C), respiratory rate ( R = R routine, R rout + R apparent heat increment, R AHI), ammonia production rate ( U = U routine, U rout + U post-prandial, U PP) and biomass production ( P) of Octopus maya during its growing process. Energy lost from faeces ( H) was calculated as H=C−(U+R+P) and assimilated energy (As) as R + P. Octopuses fed an artificial diet had almost five times higher ingestion rate compared to that observed in octopuses fed crab. However, growth rate and production ( P) were high in octopuses fed crab in comparison to octopuses fed artificial diet. An inverse relation between faeces ( H) and type of food was observed, indicating that animals lost 77% of the ingested energy when fed artificial diet and only 5% when fed crab. A higher assimilation and production efficiency were obtained in octopuses fed crab ( P/As: 61%) than in animals fed the artificial diet ( P/As: −5%). The routine O : N ratio for animals in fasting was 9.1 and 2.3 for octopuses being fed crabs and the artificial diet, respectively. The post-alimentary O : N ratio was 3.6 and 2.2 for animals fed crabs and the artificial diet, respectively. This indicates that animals fed on both diets rely almost exclusively on protein. Based on energy balance data, a value of 472 kJ week−1 kg−1 of live octopus was estimated as the energy needed to obtain a growth rate near 9 g day−1 (2.8% BW day−1) for O. maya subadults. The total crab biomass needed to obtain 1 kg of fed O. maya biomass was calculated. A comparison with other different energy balance measurements made in other octopus species indicates that O. maya and Enteroctopus megalocyathus (Pérez et al. ) tend to be more efficient by channelling more ingested energy to biomass production ( P = 69.5% of C) than O. vulgaris ( P = 23% of C; Petza et al. ) or Paraledone charcoti ( P = 4% of C; Daly and Peck ). The article presents a study which aims to determine the effect of sublethal concentrations of chromium (Cr) and cadmium (Cd) on thermal tolerance of Machrobrachium (M.) rosenbergii prawn in different hardness levels of freshwater. The study used juvenile M. rosenbergii from a commercial culture farm, Cr and Cd, and Anova method for calculations. Results showed that critical thermal maximum (CTM) increased for Cd-exposed groups, but in hard water, increase in Cd exposure caused a lower CTM.

The article presents the study on the temperature and growth of grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella, exposed to sublethal concentration of detergents. It states that the juveniles of C. idella are kept in glass aquaria at density of ten fish and maintained at 24 ± 1° Celcius for I week and examined with sodium alkyl aryl sulphonate detergent. Ten polymorphic microsatellite DNA loci were isolated from Mexican four-eyed octopus Octopus maya, by construction of an enriched genomic library. Genotyping of 35 individuals from Sabancuy Campeche, México, revealed variable levels of locus polymorphism with an average of 9.2 alleles. The observed and expected heterozygosity per locus ranged from 0.53 to 0.93 and from 0.48 to 0.87, respectively. No evidence of linkage disequilibrium was detected between pairs of loci and genotype proportions at all loci conformed to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium expectations. Purpose: The current study examined associations of social and built features of neighborhood environments with psychological distress 6 years later and whether these associations were explained by stress and social factors, among Hispanic/Latino adults from the HCHS/SOL and SOL CASAS Ancillary Study.In the SOL CASAS Ancillary Study, HCHS/SOL San Diego participants’ baseline (2008–2011) home addresses were geocoded, neighborhoods were defined using 800 m radial buffers, and variables representing neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation, social disorder, walkability, and greenness were created. Psychological distress (anxiety and depression symptoms) and proposed pathway variables chronic stress, social support, and family cohesion were assessed at HCHS/SOL Visit 2 (2014–2017).On average, the population (n = 2785) was 39.47 years old, 53.3% were women, and 92.3% were of Mexican heritage. In complex survey regression analyses that accounted for sociodemographic covariates, the complex sampling design, and sample weights, greater baseline neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation predicted lower family cohesion at Visit 2 (B = -0.99, 95% CI [-1.97, -0.06]). Path models showed indirect associations of baseline neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation with Visit 2 psychological distress through family cohesion (MacKinnon’s 95% CI depression [0.001, 0.026]; 3.9% of the variance accounted for; anxiety [0.00071, 0.019] 3.0% of the variance accounted for).Among adults of mostly Mexican heritage from the San Diego, CA area, neighborhood deprivation indirectly predicted later psychological distress through family cohesion.
