Plasma technology for generating activated water has garnered significant interest among researchers for its antimicrobial properties post-treatment. This study aimed to produce chitosan hydrogels incorporating various types and concentrations of plasma activated water (PAW) derived from tap water and purified water. Initially, the physicochemical properties of PAW, including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and total dissolved solids (TDS), were assessed, revealing a notable decrease in pH and an increase in EC and TDS post-activation. Chitosan hydrogels were then synthesized using PAW and subjected to Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analyses. Results indicated a minimal impact on the chemical structure of the hydrogels post-PAW addition. TGA and DSC results revealed differences between tap water-based hydrogels and purified water-based hydrogels, indicating the presence of impurities or minerals in tap water. SEM observations depicted morphological alterations with increased plasma exposure, potentially enhancing antimicrobial activity. In degradation and swelling tests, the hydrogels exhibited pH sensitivity, maintaining integrity in neutral and alkaline media while dissolving in acidic conditions. Hemocompatibility and antimicrobial efficacy were confirmed through hemolysis tests and antibacterial/antifungal assays, particularly in hydrogels with prolonged water activation times, attributed to reactive species in PAW. One of the main constraints of sophorolipid (SL) microbial production is the substrate-associated costs and the lower productivity compared to synthetic surfactants. Nevertheless, SLs have found their potential in multiple markets, including agriculture due to their pesticide and plant-growth-promoting effects. In this sense, this study has aimed in evaluating potential SLs-producing Brazilian native strains of Starmerella bombicola isolated from different biomes, considering their potential of assimilating household residual cooking oil (HCO), which represents a renewable feedstock to aid the issues regarding raw material expenditures. The highest SL production (6.2 g/L) was obtained with S. bombicola Y-6419 which was isolated from the Brazilian Cerrado biome. To analyze the viability of using rice bran aqueous hydrolysate (RBH) as an alternative nutrients source, it was implemented a 22 factorial design, thereby, the concentration of HCO (g/L) and the supplementation of RBH (% v/v) were evaluated as manipulated variables; as a response, SL production (g/L) was quantified. The RBH showed promising utilization as an elicitor of SLs production by S. bombicola and the final SL titer comprised 51 g/L, which represents an augmentation of approximately ninefold compared to the medium without RBH. SLs were characterized for their physical–chemical properties and their chemical structures were confirmed by HPLC–MS, TLC, and FTIR. Thus, the utilization of agroindustry byproducts and a renewable lipophilic carbon source exhibited marked potential in the production of biosurfactants by the native S. bombicola strain which enables a step towards the consolidation of the bioprocess in modern biorefineries. The BL Lac Markarian 501 exhibited two flaring activities in the very-high-energy (VHE) band in May 2009. The lack of correlation between X-rays and TeV gamma-rays without increasing in other bands suggested that more than one emission zone could be involved. Moreover, fast variability in the flaring state was observed, indicating that the emission zones responsible must have small sizes. We use a lepto-hadronic model with two-zone emission to explain the spectral energy distribution during quiescent and these flaring states. In the proposed scenario, the photopion processes explain the VHE flaring activities successfully, and variability constraints place the activity in a zone located near the jet's base or named inner blob, while synchrotron self-Compton emission describing the X-ray signature during that flaring state occurs in the zone situated far the central engine or named outer blob. This work investigated the photocatalytic degradation of the 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid herbicide and its primary intermediate (4-chloro-2-methyl phenol) using the coupled catalyst TiO2 modified with the iron oxide species, FeOOH and Fe2O3 (FeOx, 0.5 wt.%), under UV–Vis radiation assisted with persulfate or peroxymonosulfate. The FeOx–TiO2 composite prepared by microwave-assisted sol–gel method was characterized by X-Ray Diffraction, Nitrogen Physisorption, UV–Vis Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, Photoluminescence, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric Analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Transmission Electron Microscopy. The anatase phase was conserved in the FeOx–TiO2 material. The coupling of FeOx in TiO2 decreased the crystallite size and enhanced the specific surface area and visible light response. A response surface methodology based on Central Composite Design was used to obtain the optimal oxidant agent (persulfate or peroxymonosulfate), oxidant dosage, and solution pH conditions to enhance the 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid mineralization. The 87.04% of 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid mineralization was achieved by FeOx–TiO2 composite with persulfate (5 mM) under UV–Vis radiation at pH 7 in 150 min showing a synergic effect. This result allowed the complete elimination of 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid and the by-product 4-chloro-2-methyl phenol generated during the reaction compared to 61.6 and 27.9% mineralization obtained with FeOx–TiO2 + hυ and persulfate oxidation + hυ, respectively. The photogenerated electrons in FeOx–TiO2 improved mineralization efficiency that allows the persulfate activation. Protein phosphorylation is a major regulatory mechanism of cellular signalling. The c-JUN proto-oncoprotein is phosphorylated at four residues within its transactivation domain (TAD) by the JNK family kinases, but the functional significance of c-JUN multisite phosphorylation has remained elusive. Here we show that c-JUN phosphorylation by JNK exhibits defined temporal kinetics, with serine63 and serine73 being phosphorylated more rapidly than threonine91 and threonine93. We identify the positioning of the phosphorylation sites relative to the kinase docking motif, and their primary sequence, as the main factors controlling phosphorylation kinetics. Functional analysis reveals three c-JUN phosphorylation states: unphosphorylated c-JUN recruits the MBD3 repressor, serine63/73 doubly-phosphorylated c-JUN binds to the TCF4 co-activator, whereas the fully phosphorylated form disfavours TCF4 binding attenuating JNK signalling. Thus, c-JUN phosphorylation encodes multiple functional states that drive a complex signalling response from a single JNK input. Phosphorylation at multiple sites is a major regulatory mechanism in cellular signalling. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) shows pronounced epithelial and mesenchymal cancer cell populations1–4. Cellular heterogeneity in PDAC is an important feature in disease subtype specification3–5, but how distinct PDAC subpopulations interact, and the molecular mechanisms that underlie PDAC cell fate decisions, are incompletely understood. Here we identify the BMP inhibitor GREM16,7 as a key regulator of cellular heterogeneity in pancreatic cancer in human and mouse. Grem1 inactivation in established PDAC in mice resulted in a direct conversion of epithelial into mesenchymal PDAC cells within days, suggesting that persistent GREM1 activity is required to maintain the epithelial PDAC subpopulations. By contrast, Grem1 overexpression caused an almost complete ‘epithelialization’ of highly mesenchymal PDAC, indicating that high GREM1 activity is sufficient to revert the mesenchymal fate of PDAC cells. Mechanistically, Grem1 was highly expressed in mesenchymal PDAC cells and inhibited the expression of the epithelial–mesenchymal transition transcription factors Snai1 (also known as Snail) and Snai2 (also known as Slug) in the epithelial cell compartment, therefore restricting epithelial–mesenchymal plasticity. Oxaliplatin is the first-line regime for advanced gastric cancer treatment, while its resistance is a major problem that leads to the failure of clinical treatments. Tumor cell heterogeneity has been considered as one of the main causes for drug resistance in cancer. In this study, the mechanism of oxaliplatin resistance was investigated through in vitro human gastric cancer organoids and gastric cancer oxaliplatin-resistant cell lines and in vivo subcutaneous tumorigenicity experiments. The in vitro and in vivo results indicated that CD133+ stem cell-like cells are the main subpopulation and PARP1 is the central gene mediating oxaliplatin resistance in gastric cancer. It was found that PARP1 can effectively repair DNA damage caused by oxaliplatin by means of mediating the opening of base excision repair pathway, leading to the occurrence of drug resistance. The CD133+ stem cells also exhibited upregulated expression of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) mRNA and its writer METTL3 as showed by immunoprecipitation followed by sequencing and transcriptome analysis. METTTL3 enhances the stability of PARP1 by recruiting YTHDF1 to target the 3′-untranslated Region (3′-UTR) of PARP1 mRNA. The CD133+ tumor stem cells can regulate the stability and expression of m6A to PARP1 through METTL3, and thus exerting the PARP1-mediated DNA damage repair ability. Therefore, our study demonstrated that m6A Methyltransferase METTL3 facilitates oxaliplatin resistance in CD133+ gastric cancer stem cells by Promoting PARP1 mRNA stability which increases base excision repair pathway activity. The aim of this work was to evaluate the technologies effect of cold extraction by centrifugation (CE) and ultrasound-assisted (US-CE) methods without adding water, on the avocado oil yield, nutritional composition, physicochemical characteristics, oxidative stability (oxidation temperature and time, besides activation energy) and accelerated shelf life regarding hexane extraction (control). The US-CE improved the physicochemical properties such as acidity, peroxides, and iodine indexes regarding CE and Control. US-CE improved the yield, nutritional quality of fatty acids, oxidative stability, shelf life, and ω-6/ω-3 ratio regarding CE. Furthermore, US-CE improved the ratio yield/time extraction of the oil and increased the oxidation temperature regarding control. The main advantage of oils extracted using CE and US-CE concerning control was higher oxidative stability. The most representative polyunsaturated fatty acids identified in all treatments were γ-linolenic and conjugated α-linolenic acids. α-linolenic acid was only detected in US-CE and control. Melanoma affects about 6000 patients a year in Spain. A group of medical oncologists from Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) and Spanish Multidisciplinary Melanoma Group (GEM) has designed these guidelines to homogenize the management of these patients. The diagnosis must be histological and determination of BRAF status has to be performed in patients with stage ≥ III. Stage I–III resectable melanomas will be treated surgically. In patients with stage III melanoma, adjuvant treatment with immunotherapy or targeted therapy is also recommended. Patients with unresectable or metastatic melanoma will receive treatment with immunotherapy or targeted therapy, the optimal sequence of these treatments remains unclear. Brain metastases require a separate consideration, since, in addition to systemic treatment, they may require local treatment. Purpose: Intestinal dysbiosis has emerged as a biomarker of response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). It can be caused by antibiotics, although it may also result from the use of other drugs that have been studied to a lesser extent. The objective of our study was to analyze the association between the use of potentially dysbiosis-related drugs and survival in patients treated with ICIs in the clinical practice. Materials and methods: A retrospective, multicenter, cohort study was conducted. Clinicopathological variables were collected and the concomitant use of drugs was analyzed. A descriptive analysis of variables and overall survival, estimated by the Kaplan–Meier method, was performed, and association with various independent variables was assessed using Cox regression. Results: We included 253 patients, mainly with non-small cell lung cancer and melanoma. The most commonly used drugs were acid reducers, prescribed to 55.3% of patients, followed by corticosteroids (37.9%), anxiolytic drugs (35.6%), and antibiotics (20.5%). The use of acid reducers (9 vs. 18 months, P <.0001), antibiotics (7 vs. 15 months, P <.017), anxiolytic drugs (8 vs. 16 months, P <.015), and corticosteroids (6 vs. 19 months, P <.00001) was associated with poorer overall survival. Furthermore, the greater the number of drugs used concomitantly with ICIs, the higher the risk of death (1 drug: hazard ratio, 1.88; CI 95%, 1.07–3.30; 4 drugs: hazard ratio, 4.19; CI9 5%, 1.77–9.92; P <.001). Conclusion: Response to ICIs may be influenced by the use of drugs that lead to intestinal dysbiosis. Purpose: Our primary goal was to study the use of outpatient attendances by lung cancer patients in Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda (HUPHM), Spain, by leveraging our Electronic Patient Record (EPR) and structured clinical registry of lung cancer cases as well as assessing current Data Science methods and tools. Methods/patients: We applied the Cross-Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM) to integrate and analyze activity data extracted from the EPR (9.3 million records) and clinical data of lung cancer patients from a previous registry that was curated into a new, structured database based on REDCap. We have described and quantified factors with an influence in outpatient care use from univariate and multivariate points of view (through Poisson and negative binomial regression). Results: Three cycles of CRISP-DM were performed resulting in a curated database of 522 lung cancer patients with 133 variables which generated 43,197 outpatient visits and tests, 1538 ER visits and 753 inpatient admissions. Stage and ECOG-PS at diagnosis and Charlson Comorbidity Index were major contributors to healthcare use. We also found that the patients' pattern of healthcare use (even before diagnosis), the existence of a history of cancer in first-grade relatives, smoking habits, or even age at diagnosis, could play a relevant role. Conclusions: Integrating activity data from EPR and clinical structured data from lung cancer patients and applying CRISP-DM has allowed us to describe healthcare use in connection with clinical variables that could be used to plan resources and improve quality of care. Introduction: This study aimed to describe the efficacy of fulvestrant 500 mg in postmenopausal women with estrogen receptor (ER)-positive advanced/metastatic breast cancer who had disease progression after receiving anti-estrogen therapy in clinical practice, getting real-world data.Materials and methods: Multicenter, retrospective, observational study conducted in Spain. Postmenopausal women with locally advanced/metastatic ER-positive breast cancer who received treatment with fulvestrant 500 mg after progression with a previous anti-estrogen therapy were eligible. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS); secondary endpoints were overall survival (OS), clinical benefit rate (CBR), duration of clinical benefit (DoCB), and safety profile.Results: A total of 263 women were evaluated (median age, 65.8 years). At a median follow-up of 21.5 months, median PFS and OS were 10.6 and 43.2 months, respectively. PFS according to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and ≥ 4th lines were 11.5, 10.6, 9.9, and 8.5 months, respectively (p = 0.0245). PFS in patients with visceral involvement was 10 months vs 10.6 months in patients without visceral involvement (p = 0.6604), 9.6 months in patients with high Ki67 vs 10 months in patients with low Ki67 (p = 0.7224), and 10.2 months in HER2+ patients vs 10.3 months in HER2− patients (p = 0.6809). The CBR was 56.5% and the DoCB was 18.4 months. The most frequently adverse events were injection site pain (10.3%) and musculoskeletal disorders (7.6%).Conclusions: Fulvestrant 500 mg administered in clinical practice was shown to be effective (PFS, 10.6 months; CBR, 56.5%) and well tolerated, in accordance with previous trials. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of feed restriction on intake of Moringa oleifera (MO) or Leucaena leucocephala (LL) and growth of rabbits. In experiment one, 45 rabbits (male and female) weighing 1.18 ± 0.15 kg were used. They were randomly distributed to three feed restriction treatments (20, 30, and 40%) with 15 rabbits each (9 females and 6 males) and they were offered M. oleifera (MO) ad libitum . In experiment two, 45 growing male rabbits weighing 0.63 ± 0.113 kg were used. They were randomly assigned to 0, 20, and 30% feed restriction diets, and they have free access to L. leucocephala (LL). Intake of MO increased ( P < 0.05) conforming feed restriction increased (40.6, 52.9, and 55.2 g/day of MO for 20, 30, and 40%, respectively). Daily liveweight gain and feed conversion did not differ ( P > 0.05), and economic efficiency was similar among treatments. Consumption of LL increased ( P < 0.05) in rabbits under the 30% restriction treatment in comparison to that of rabbits restricted 20% (46.0 and 44.4 g/day, respectively). Total feed intake (LL + feed) was highest in 20% restricted rabbits (108.0, 100.8, and 93.2 g/day for 20, 30, and 0%, respectively). Daily liveweight gain and feed conversion were not affected by feed restriction ( P > 0.05). Economic efficiency improved twice in feed-restricted rabbits (2.0 and 2.3 for 20 and 30%, respectively) in contrast to that of the control 0% group (1.1). We obtain an approximate global stationary and axisymmetric solution of Einstein's equations which can be thought of as a simple star model: a self-gravitating perfect fluid ball with a differential rotation motion pattern. Using the post-Minkowskian formalism (weak-field approximation) and considering rotation as a perturbation (slow-rotation approximation), we find approximate interior and exterior (asymptotically flat) solutions to this problem in harmonic coordinates. Interior and exterior solutions are matched, in the sense described by Lichnerowicz, on the surface of zero pressure, to obtain a global solution. The resulting metric depends on four arbitrary constants: mass density; rotational velocity at $$r=0$$ ; a parameter that accounts for the change in rotational velocity through the star; and the star radius in the non-rotation limit. Background: The programmed death (PD-1) inhibitor pembrolizumab has been recently approved for the treatment of advanced melanoma. We evaluated the clinical activity of pembrolizumab in melanoma patients treated under the Spanish Expanded Access Program. Methods: Advanced melanoma patients who failed to previous treatment lines were treated with pembrolizumab 2 mg/kg every three weeks. Patients with brain metastases were not excluded if they were asymptomatic. Data were retrospectively collected from 21 centers in the Spanish Melanoma Group. Results: Sixty-seven advanced melanoma patients were analyzed. Most patients were stage M1c (73.1%), had high LDH levels (55.2%) and had ECOG PS 1 or higher (59.7%). For cutaneous melanoma patients, median overall survival was 14.0 months; the 18-month overall survival rate was 47.1%. Overall response rate was 27%, including three patients with complete responses (6.5%). Median response duration was not reached, with 83.3% of responses ongoing (3.5 m+ to 20.4 m+). From ten patients included with brain metastases, four (40%) had an objective response, two (20%) of them achieved a complete response. Significant prognostic factors for overall survival were LDH level, ECOG PS and objective response. There were no serious adverse events. Conclusion: Although this was a heavily pretreated cohort, pembrolizumab activity at the approved dose and schedule was confirmed in the clinical setting with long-term responders, also including patients with brain metastases. This work presents a conceptual design of an integrated biorefinery using olive tree pruning as feedstock. The biorefinery combines a state-of-the-art thermochemical technology for producing high value-added antioxidants with an energy self-sufficient biochemical platform for lignocellulosic ethanol production. These plants are integrated by exchanging energy and feedstock. The process and design parameters employed in the plant designs are based on the authors' own lab and pilot-scale data. The paper discusses the economic dilemma of using this feedstock for producing high value-added products in small amounts versus producing large amounts of low-profit biofuels. The feasibility of this production strategy at medium scale is demonstrated via a techno-economic analysis based on total production cost for each co-product. Each plant is energy integrated, and the energy performance of the bioethanol plant is assessed by calculating the end-use-energy ratio. Purpose: Head and neck cancer is a highly heterogeneous disease comprising a large number of tumors located in the cervicofacial area. This study aimed to determine the epidemiological characteristics of squamous-cell carcinomas of the head and neck in the Spanish population, and the distribution of risk factors based on tumor locations. Methods/patients: A cohort of 459 patients (75 oral cavity, 167 oro-/hypopharyngeal and 217 laryngeal cancers) recruited in 19 hospitals participating in the Spanish head and neck cancer cooperative group were included over 3 years (2012-2014). Epidemiological parameters and risk factors were obtained from a self-administered questionnaire, and tumor characteristics were obtained from clinical records. Multivariate multinomial logistic regression was used to assess factors associated with tumor location. Results: Most patients were males (88.4 %), smokers (95 %) and drinkers (76.5 %). Relative to laryngeal cancer, pharyngeal cancer and oral cancer were more common in women than men (OR 3.58, p = 0.003 and 4.33, p = 0.001, respectively); pharyngeal cancer was more associated with rural environment (OR 1.81, p = 0.007) and weekly alcohol intake (10-140 g: OR 2.53, p = 0.012; 141-280 g: OR 2.47, p = 0.023; >280 g: OR 3.20, p = 0.001) and less associated with pack-years of smoking (21-40 packs: OR 0.46, p = 0.045; 41-70 packs: OR 0.43, p = 0.023; ≥71 packs: OR 3.20, p = 0.015). Conclusions: The distribution of these tumors differs between the sexes, with a higher proportion of oral cavity and pharyngeal tumors in women than in men. In order to estimate the effects of a thermal power plant, physicochemical parameters and the concentrations of copper, nickel and lead were evaluated in water from both Tampamachoco Lagoon and the estuary of the Tuxpan River. Average salinities were 33.66 ups in the lagoon area, 32.77 ups in the channel that joins the lagoon and the river, and 24.74 ups in the river estuary. Total average metal concentrations were 21.95 for Cu, 29.67 for Ni and 4.31 µ/L for Pb. Sampling point 1 and samples from the bottom water of the lagoon present the highest salinities and concentrations of suspended matter, TOC, Cu, Ni and Pb.These high values may be associated with the infiltration of sea water either from plant operation or from the channel that connects the lagoon with the sea. This paper addresses the numerical simulation of void formation and transport during mold filling in Resin Transfer Molding (RTM). The saturation equation, based on a two-phase flow model resin/air, is coupled with Darcy's law and mass conservation to simulate the unsaturated filling flow that takes place in a RTM mold when resin is injected through the fiber bed. These equations lead to a system composed of an advection-diffusion equation for saturation including capillary effects and an elliptic equation for pressure taking into account the effect of air residual saturation. The model introduces the relative permeability as a function of resin saturation. When capillary effects are omitted, the hyperbolic nature of the saturation equation and its strong coupling with Darcy equation through relative permeability represent a challenging numerical issue. The combination of the constitutive physical laws relating permeability to saturation with the coupled system of the pressure and saturation equations allows predicting the saturation profiles. The model was validated by comparison with experimental data obtained for a fiberglass reinforcement injected in a RTM mold at constant flow rate. Background: Disease-associated malnutrition (DAM) is a health problem involving all sanitary levels, especially hospitalised elderly patients. Different MNA (Mini Nutritional Assessment)-based forms have been validated in different settings, but it remains unclear if they are appropriate to evaluate the nutritional status of geriatric hospitalised patients with diabetes. Objective: The aim of this work was to analyse the accuracy of several MNA reduced forms to detect malnutrition in hospitalised elderly diabetic patients. Methods: A multicentre observational study was carried out in diabetic patients, who were over the age of 65, from 35 Spanish hospitals. Principal component analysis (PCA) selected the minimal components to elaborate the newly-proposed reduced new version of the MNA (r-MNA). Cohen's Kappa index (KI), with its 95% confidence interval (CI), was used to measure the agreement between the different reduced forms (r-MNA, MNA-SF-BMI, MNA-SF-CC, m-MNA) with the original MNA. Results: Five hundred and ninety-one elderly diabetic patients were included in the study. ROC analysis determined the following cut-off points for the newly proposed r MNA: 0-<10 'malnourished', 10-12 'at risk' and >12-15 'well-nourished'. The upper cut-off point demonstrated a sensitivity of 87.7%, a specificity of 78.3% and an area under the curve of 0.93. The lower cut-off point showed a sensitivity of 95.9%, a specificity of 78.3% and an area under the curve of 0.95. The best agreement with the original MNA was observed for the MNA-SF-BMI (Κ index 80.7; 95% CI: 77.4-84) and the worst for the r-MNA (Κ index 72; 95% CI: 68.2-75.4). Conclusions: This study found that MNA-SF-BMI is the most accurate screening tool for determining the nutritional status of hospitalised diabetic elderly patients. Background/objective: White-to-brown adipose tissue remodeling (browning) in response to different stimuli constitutes an active research area for obesity treatment. The emergence in traditional white adipose tissue (WAT) depots of multilocular adipocytes that express uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) and resemble brown adipocytes, the so called 'brite' adipocytes, could contribute to increased energy expenditure. In rodents, obesogenic stimuli such as the intake of hyperlipidic diets can increase brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenic capacity and contribute to maintaining body weight. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of two different hyperlipidic diets, a commercial high-fat (HF) diet and a highly palatable cafeteria (CAF) diet, to induce WAT browning.Methods: We analyzed gene expression of a wide number of brown/brite adipocyte markers in different WAT depots, in BAT and in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) increasingly being used in nutrition studies as a potential source of biomarkers of physiological effects. We also performed morphological analysis of adipose tissue.Results: Both HF diets studied were able to increase the expression of the markers studied in WAT in a depot-specific manner, as well as in BAT; some of these changes were also reflected in PBMCs. This increased browning capacity was translated into the appearance of UCP1- and CIDE-A (cell death-inducing DFFA-like effector A)-positive brite adipocytes in retroperitoneal WAT. Administration of the CAF diet, associated with higher adiposity, produced the strongest impact on the parameters studied while its withdrawal restored basal conditions.Conclusions: Acquisition of brown adipocyte features in WAT could evidence an adaptation to try to counteract increased adiposity due to the intake of HF diets. This paper describes four new cases of lymphomas, two Hodgkin lymphomas and two non-Hodgkin lymphomas in patients with paracoccidioidomycosis. All had mycosis diagnosed before lymphomas with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis demonstrated in several lymph nodes, as seen in the disseminated form of the disease. When lymphoma was diagnosed, one patient was under regular paracoccidioidomycosis treatment and in clinic-serological remission for this disease, another was under regular treatment but with clinic-serological mycosis activity, one had abandoned paracoccidioidomycosis treatment 6 years earlier, and the other had not yet received any kind of antifungal drugs. Three patients received treatment for lymphomas with one remaining in remission until now, one achieving tumor remission which relapsed years later, and one having only residual lymphoma in bone marrow for a decade but clinically well. All three experienced paracoccidioidomycosis clinical remission, however, serology became negative just in one. Similar previously described cases were reviewed: five Hodgkin lymphomas, three non-Hodgkin lymphomas, and one described only as 'lymphoma' without specifying type; a summary of their findings is presented. In this work, nitrogen-doped ZnO material was synthesized by the sol–gel method using zinc acetate as the precursor and urea as the nitrogen source (15, 20, 25 and 30% wt.). For comparative purposes, bare ZnO was also prepared. The influence of N doping on structural, morphological, optical and photocatalytic properties was investigated. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM-EDS, diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy, BET and XPS analysis. The photocatalytic activity of N-doped ZnO catalysts was evaluated during the degradation of a mixture of herbicides (2,4-D and picloram) under visible radiation ≥400 nm. The photo-absorption wavelength range of the N-doped ZnO samples was shifted to longer wavelength compared to those of the unmodified ZnO. Among different amounts of dopant agent, the 30% N-doped ZnO material showed higher visible-light activity compared with pure ZnO. Several degradation by-products were identified by using HPLC and ESI-MS/MS. The enhancement of visible photocatalytic activity of the N-doped ZnO semiconductor could be mainly due to their capability in reducing the electron–hole pair recombination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The coffee agro-industry generates a large volume of wastewater that is notable for its high organic strength as well as its color content. Due to the seasonal nature of the harvest (3-4 months per year), this particular industrial waste needs a treatment method that is both reliable and fast (in terms of start-up time). As part of investigating a system capable of treating a coffee wastewater, this research evaluated four electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) using boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes. The processes were anodic oxidation (AO), anodic oxidation with electrogenerated HO (AO-HO), electro-Fenton (EF), and photoelectro-Fenton (PEF). Experimental conditions were as follows: 40 mA cm current density (all EAOPs), 0.3 mmol Fe L (Fenton systems), 300 mL air min (AO-HO, EF, PEF), and 500 μW cm UV irradiation (photo-Fenton systems). The performance of the four EAOP treatment methods (in terms of color and organic carbon removal) was compared against two conventional chemical oxidation methods, namely, Fenton and photo-Fenton. The research indicated that the four EAOPs were better at removing color (89-93 %) and total organic carbon (TOC) (73-84 %) than the respective chemical Fenton (58 and 4.8 %) and photo-Fenton (61 and 7 %) methods. The trend in performance was as follows: AO-HO > AO > PEF ≈ EF. It appeared that the ferrous iron reagent formed a dark-colored complex with some coffee components, diminishing the effect of Fenton reactions. In addition, the dark color of the wastewater limited the effect of light in the UV-Fenton processes. Analysis showed that acceptable levels of Fe (0.3 mmol L) and energy (0.082-0.098 kWh g TOC) were required by the EAOPs after 4-h treatment time. In conclusion, the use of electrochemical methods (equipped with BDD electrodes) seems a promising method for the effective treatment of coffee wastewaters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work describes a method for synthesizing sodium peroxocarbonate by electoxidation of carbonate on conductive-diamond thin film electrodes in a sodium carbonate solution at room temperature. The effect of several parameters including: electrolyte concentration, current intensity, addition of NaSiO as a stabilizing agent, and increments in temperature for sodium peroxocarbonate formation has been studied in an electrochemical H cell of two compartments separated by a cation-exchange membrane. The oxidant formation has been confirmed by cyclic voltammetry and in situ reduction during water electrolysis. The optimal experimental conditions are: the current density of 34.3 mA cm, an electrolyte concentration of 1 M, and the addition of 4 g/L of sodium metasilicate in the two compartments of the electrochemical cell. This work examines the new possibilities introduced with the arrival of commercially available high-resolution continuum source atomic absorption spectrometers for the determination of metalloids (B, Si, Ge, As, Se, Sb and Te) and non-metals (P, S, F, Cl, Br, I and N-based species), such as the improved potential to detect and correct for spectral overlaps and the strategies available to correct for matrix effects. In particular, and considering the increasing number of papers reporting on the use of molecular absorption spectrometry using graphite furnaces and flames as vaporizers, the work discusses in detail the advantages and limitations derived from the monitoring of molecular spectra from a practical point of view, in an attempt to guide future users of the technique. We compare an approximation of the singularity-free Wahlquist exact solution with a stationary and axisymmetric metric for a rigidly rotating perfect fluid with the equation of state $$\mu +3p=\mu _0$$, a sub-case of a global approximate metric obtained recently by some of us. We see that to have a fluid with vanishing twist vector everywhere in Wahlquist's metric the only option is to let its parameter $$r_0\rightarrow 0$$ and using this in the comparison allows us in particular to determine the approximate relation between the angular velocity of the fluid in a set of harmonic coordinates and $$r_0$$. Through some coordinate changes we manage to make every component of both approximate metrics equal. In this situation, the free constants of our metric take values that happen to be those needed for it to be of Petrov type D, the last condition that this fluid must verify to give rise to the Wahlquist solution. The flame straightening of steel components is based on heating a local region of the part by means of a torch in order to induce a permanent deformation through a field of residual stresses. Although this is a very common practice, it is not devoid of serious drawbacks. In this paper, the influence of the flame bending procedure on the microstructure of three very different structural steels (S235 JR, S460 ML and S690 QL, respectively), widely used for the construction of metallic structures, is analysed. The consequences of the heat treatment on the mechanical and fracture properties were characterised through micro-hardness Vickers and Charpy impact tests; in addition, some elastic-plastic fracture tests were performed on precracked Charpy specimens manufactured with the S235 JR steel. The relationship between the microstructural features and the material mechanical and fracture behaviour was studied in depth in all cases, correlating the changes induced by the flame heat treatment on the microstructure with the macroscopic mechanical and fracture response. For a proper understanding of the microstructural consequences of this straightening heat treatment, it was necessary to develop a Finite Element numerical model. Based on the experimental results, this study has revealed that the consequences of the flame straightening on the microstructure, mechanical or fracture behaviour strongly depend on the nature of the material; for this reason, it is not possible to establish general recommendations. We use analytic perturbation theory to present a new approximate metric for a rigidly rotating perfect fluid source with equation of state (EOS) $$\epsilon +(1-n)p=\epsilon _0$$. This EOS includes the interesting cases of strange matter, constant density and the fluid of the Wahlquist metric. It is fully matched to its approximate asymptotically flat exterior using Lichnerowicz junction conditions and it is shown to be a totally general matching using Darmois-Israel conditions and properties of the harmonic coordinates. Then we analyse the Petrov type of the interior metric and show first that, in accordance with previous results, in the case corresponding to Wahlquist's metric it can not be matched to the asymptotically flat exterior. Next, that this kind of interior can only be of Petrov types I, D or (in the static case) O and also that the non-static constant density case can only be of type I. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the main Bisphenol A (BPA) release is a degradation process originated by the contact between detergent and polycarbonate (PC) at high temperatures. EU Laws for food contact materials authorize the use of BPA for food contact PC articles (some for the use of young children), and consequently, the degradation process should be taken into account when testing PC articles. In the present study, two types of samples were assayed, baby bottles that have previously undergone some migration assays and new baby bottles of a specific brand in order to test the degradation of not previously used articles. The tests were performed under different conditions and using two types of detergents. To quantify BPA, a high-performance liquid chromatographic system with fluorescence detector was used. The method was validated, and satisfactory results were achieved. Data obtained indicated that the trademark is a substantial factor in the level of BPA release from PC polymer; besides a great dispersion between samples of the same batch independently of the detergent and concentration employed used was found. On the other hand, for both types of samples, a previous food contact (infant formula) as well as the exposure procedure (immersion or article filling) has influenced on the PC degradation. The equilibrium configurations between a Schwarzschild black hole and a hyperextreme Kerr object are shown to be described by a three-parameter subfamily of the extended double-Kerr solution. For this subfamily we provide a physical representation which employs as arbitrary parameters the individual Komar masses and relative coordinate distance between the sources. The calculation of horizon's local angular velocity induced in the Schwarzschild black hole by the Kerr constituent yields a simple expression inversely proportional to the square of the distance parameter. The present paper fills in the final gap in the search and description of different equilibrium states in the two-body systems consisting of one extreme and one non-extreme components. In the 'extreme-non-extreme' case of charged spinning masses we obtain, by making use of an appropriate exact solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations and solving numerically the corresponding balance equations, the first examples of the 'extreme-hyperextreme' equilibrium configurations characterized by positive Komar masses of both Kerr-Newman constituents. Furthermore, we demonstrate that equilibrium in the 'extreme-subextreme' stationary electrovac systems is also possible, but all particular equilibrium configurations of this type found by us involve negative mass of one of the constituents. In the electrostatic case which admits a purely analytic treatment we give a rigorous proof of the non-existence of the 'extreme-non-extreme' equilibrium configurations in the framework of the double-Reissner-Nordström solution. At the same time, the electrostatic equilibrium between an extreme and a subextreme black holes can be achieved in the uniform external field, provided the two constituents form a specific dihole with zero net charge. The p57Kip2 cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor (CDKi) has been implicated in embryogenesis, stem-cell senescence and pathologies, but little is known of its role in cell cycle control. Here, we show that p57Kip2 is targeted by the p38 stress-activated protein kinase (SAPK). Phosphorylation of p57Kip2 at T143 by p38 enhances its association with and inhibition of Cdk2, which results in cell-cycle delay upon stress. Genetic inactivation of the SAPK or the CDKi abolishes cell-cycle delay upon osmostress and results in decreased cell viability. Oxidative stress and ionomycin also induce p38-mediated phosphorylation of p57 and cells lacking p38 or p57 display reduced viability to these stresses. Therefore, cell survival to various stresses depends on p57 phosphorylation by p38 that inhibits CDK activity. Together, these findings provide a novel molecular mechanism by which cells can delay cell cycle progression to maximize cell survival upon stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We name it the combined Majumdar-Papapetrou-Bonnor field to underline the fact that it contains as particular cases the two-body specialization of the well-known Majumdar-Papapetrou solution and Bonnor's three-parameter electrostatic field. ims/hypothesis: Inflammation is a common feature in cardiovascular diseases, including diabetes mellitus. In addition to the well-known inflammatory role of cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2), this protein has also been implicated in apoptosis resistance in tumour cells. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) from diabetic patients are also resistant to apoptosis because of an increased abundance of B cell lymphoma 2 protein (BCL2). In this work, we investigated whether overproduction of COX-2 was involved in the resistance to apoptosis in VSMC from diabetic patients. Methods: VSMC were obtained from internal mammary arteries from patients who had undergone coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Apoptosis was measured by DNA fragmentation, BCL2 degradation and cytochrome c release. Results: Apoptosis induced by C-reactive protein in cells from non-diabetic patients was mediated by COX-2. VSMC from diabetic patients showed higher basal levels of COX-2 compared with those from non-diabetic patients. Transfection of VSMC from non-diabetic patients with a plasmid containing COX-2 (also known as PTGS2) increased basal production of COX-2 and BCL2 and mimicked the resistance to apoptosis that occurs in diabetic patients. We also found a significant correlation ( R = 0.846, p = 0.016) between COX-2 and BCL2 production in arterial rings from diabetic patients measured by confocal microscopy. However, inhibition of COX-2 production by small interfering RNA proved unable to reverse BCL2 production in diabetic VSMC. Conclusions/interpretation: These results suggest a link between inflammation (COX-2) and apoptosis resistance (BCL2) in the arteries of diabetic patients. Background/Objectives:The Food Consumption Survey (FCS), conducted for over 20 years by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MARM), is the most reliable source of data to evaluate the food consumption and dietary patterns of Spain. The aim of this study was to assess population food availability per capita per day, which allows the calculation of energy and nutrient intake and comparison with the Recommended Nutrient Intakes for the Spanish population. In addition, different markers of the quality of the diet have been evaluated.Subjects/Methods:The sample consisted of consumption and distribution data, obtained from the nationwide representative FCS for the period 2000-2006. A two-stage sampling method was applied, where in the first stage the units to be sampled were towns or local entities, and in the second stage households that were going to be part of the final sample from those entities were selected. Units consisted of towns or local entities in the national territory. The sample size was 619 selected entities. Units in the second stage were households from the selected towns (8200 homes). The data allowed the calculation of energy and nutrient intakes, using food composition tables. The quality of the diet was also evaluated: the adequacy of the diet in meeting the recommended intakes for energy and nutrients; energy profile; dietary fat quality; dietary protein quality; nutrient density; and Mediterranean diet adequacy indices. The present data were compared with previous data obtained by our research group in 1964, 1981 and 1991.Results:Using the most recent data, average intake comprised milk and derivatives (379 g/person/day), fruit (310 g/person/day), vegetables and greens (302 g/person/day), cereals and derivatives (214 g/person/day), meat and meat products (179 g/day), fish (100 g/person/day), oil and fat (48 g/person/day), precooked food (34 g/person/day), eggs (32 g/person/day), and legumes and pulses (11.9 g/person/day). There was also a high consumption of non-alcoholic beverages (433 g/person/day) and alcoholic beverages (247 g/person/day). In consequence, meat and meat product consumption was higher than the recommendations, whereas for cereals and their derivatives, vegetables and greens, fruit, and legumes and pulses, consumption was below recommendations for the Spanish population. Some staple and traditional Mediterranean foods (bread, potatoes and olive oil) showed a dramatic decline when compared with data from Household Budget Surveys in 1964 data. Energy intake declined by about 300 kcal/person/day, when compared with the 1964 mean consumption. Insufficient nutrient intakes were found in the young adult population for zinc and folic acid in both sexes, and for iron in women, when compared with dietary reference values.Conclusions:Food consumption patterns in Spain and energy and nutrient intakes have changed markedly in the last 40 years, differing at present from the traditional and healthy Mediterranean diet.
