Controlled charge flows are fundamental to many areas of science and technology, serving as carriers of energy and information, as probes of material properties and dynamics1 and as a means of revealing2,3 or even inducing4,5 broken symmetries. Emerging methods for light-based current control5–16 offer particularly promising routes beyond the speed and adaptability limitations of conventional voltage-driven systems. However, optical generation and manipulation of currents at nanometre spatial scales remains a basic challenge and a crucial step towards scalable optoelectronic systems for microelectronics and information science. Here we introduce vectorial optoelectronic metasurfaces in which ultrafast light pulses induce local directional charge flows around symmetry-broken plasmonic nanostructures, with tunable responses and arbitrary patterning down to subdiffractive nanometre scales. Local symmetries and vectorial currents are revealed by polarization-dependent and wavelength-sensitive electrical readout and terahertz (THz) emission, whereas spatially tailored global currents are demonstrated in the direct generation of elusive broadband THz vector beams17. We show that, in graphene, a detailed interplay between electrodynamic, thermodynamic and hydrodynamic degrees of freedom gives rise to rapidly evolving nanoscale driving forces and charge flows under the extremely spatially and temporally localized excitation. These results set the stage for versatile patterning and optical control over nanoscale currents in materials diagnostics, THz spectroscopies, nanomagnetism and ultrafast information processing. Quantum spin liquids (QSL) have emerged as a captivating subject within interacting spin systems that exhibit no magnetic ordering even at the lowest temperature accessible experimentally. However, definitive experimental evidence remains elusive. In light of the recent surge in theoretical and experimental interest in the half-filled Hubbard model on a triangular lattice, which offers the potential for stabilizing a chiral QSL, we investigate the electromagnetic signatures of this phase to facilitate experimental detection. Utilizing a combination of parton mean-field theory and unbiased density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we systematically examine the electrical charge and orbital electrical current associated with a spinon excitation in the chiral QSL. Additionally, we calculate the longitudinal and transverse optical conductivities below the Mott gap. Furthermore, employing quantum field theory analysis, we unravel the connection between spinon excitations and emergent as well as physical gauge fields. Our results demonstrate that the chiral QSL phase exhibits a distinct electromagnetic response, even within a Mott insulator regime. Experiments were conducted to investigate the dynamics of an oscillating bubble generated by a spark in the presence of an inclined attached air bubble. The study primarily focused on the influence of the inclination angle on the behavior of bubble jetting orientation, air bubble shape modes, and motion characteristics of the interaction between the two bubbles. Various complex bubble jetting behaviors were observed, including the presence of multiple types of bubble jetting directions, bubble splitting, and multidirectional jets. Four types of air bubble shapes were defined, namely inclined cup cover-shaped (with and without splitting), double-peaked cup cover-shaped, and inclined L-shaped air bubbles. The formation of different types of bubble jets was analyzed using the vector synthesis principle of the Bjerknes force exerted by the inclined attached air bubble and a steel plate. To describe the diverse orientations of bubble jetting and air bubble shapes, new parameters namely the dimensionless spark bubble oscillation time T* and volume ratio V* that consider the inclination angle are proposed. The findings of this investigation contribute to the existing knowledge and have the potential to further enhance methods for mitigating cavitation damage in marine, hydraulic machinery systems, and medical fields.l fields. In recent years, there has been an intense search for materials realizing the Kitaev quantum spin liquid model. A number of edge-shared compounds with strong spin-orbit coupling, such as RuCl3 and iridates, have been proposed to realize this model. Nevertheless, an effective spin Hamiltonian derived from the microscopic model relevant to these compounds generally contains terms that are antagonistic toward the quantum spin liquid. This is consistent with the fact that the zero magnetic field ground state of these materials is generally magnetically ordered. It is a pressing issue to identify protocols to drive the system to the limit of the Kitaev quantum spin model. In this work, we propose Floquet engineering of these Kitaev quantum magnets by coupling materials to a circularly polarized laser. We demonstrate that all the magnetic interactions can be tuned in situ by the amplitude and frequency of the laser, hence providing a route to stabilize the Kitaev quantum spin liquid phase. Kitaev materials are prime candidates to study quantum spin liquids but despite many known examples it is still a challenge to realize systems that have a total absence of magnetic ordering. Exploring and controlling topological textures such as merons and skyrmions has attracted enormous interests from the perspective of fundamental research and spintronic applications. It has been predicted theoretically and proved experimentally that the lattice form of topological meron-skyrmion transformation can be realized with the requirement of external magnetic fields in chiral ferromagnets. However, such topological transition behavior has yet to be verified in other materials. Here, we report real-space observation of magnetic topology transformation between meron pairs and skyrmions in the localized domain wall of ferrimagnetic GdFeCo films without the need of magnetic fields. The topological transformation in the domain wall of ferrimagnet is introduced by temperature-induced spin reorientation transition (SRT) and the underlying mechanism is revealed by micromagnetic simulations. The convenient electric-controlling topology transformation and driving motion along the confined domain wall is further anticipated, which will enable advanced application in magnetic devices. Merons and Skyrmions, two topological spin-textures, have attracted a lot of interests due to their potential use in information storage. Unusual magnetic textures can be stabilized in f-electron materials due to the interplay between competing magnetic interactions, complex Fermi surfaces, and crystalline anisotropy. Here we investigate CeAuSb2, an f-electron incommensurate antiferromagnet hosting both single-Q and double-Q spin textures as a function of magnetic fields (H) applied along the c axis. Experimentally, we map out the field-temperature phase diagram via electrical resistivity and thermal expansion measurements. Supported by calculations of a Kondo lattice model, we attribute the puzzling magnetoresistance enhancement in the double-Q phase to the localization of the electronic wave functions caused by the incommensurate magnetic texture. The magnetic, electronic, and structural properties of a quantum material are intrinsically linked. In f-electron systems, such as cerium-based materials, this interplay can be exceedingly complex. Lars Onsager and Richard Feynman envisaged that the three-dimensional (3D) superfluid-to-normal λ transition in 4He occurs through the proliferation of vortices. This process should hold for every phase transition in the same universality class. The role of topological defects in symmetry-breaking phase transitions has become a prime topic in cosmology and high-temperature superconductivity, even though direct imaging of these defects is challenging. Here we show that the U(1) continuous symmetry that emerges at the ferroelectric critical point of multiferroic hexagonal manganites leads to a similar proliferation of vortices. Moreover, the disorder field (vortices) is coupled to an emergent U(1) gauge field, which becomes massive by means of the Higgs mechanism when vortices condense (span the whole system) on heating above the ferroelectric transition temperature. Direct imaging of the vortex network in hexagonal manganites offers unique experimental access to this dual description of the ferroelectric transition, while enabling tests of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. A new family of dynamic states are found in a stack of inductively coupled intrinsic Josephson junctions in the absence of an external magnetic field. In this state, (2 m l+1) π phase kinks with integers m l’s stack along the c axis and lock neighboring junctions together. A significant part of the dc power is pumped into plasma oscillations via kinks at the cavity resonances. The plasma oscillation is uniform along the c axis with the frequency satisfying the ac Josephson relation. Thus this state supports strong terahertz radiation and seems to be compatible with the recent experimental observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Objective  To explore the usefulness of multivoxel 3D proton MR spectroscopy (1H-MRS) in assessing the recurrent contrast-enhancing areas at the site of the previously treated gliomas. Materials and methods  In 28 patients who had new contrast-enhancing lesions in the vicinity of the previously resected and irradiated high-grade glioma, 3D 1H-MRS examinations were performed on a 3.0T MR scanner. Spectral data for N-acetylaspartate (NAA), choline (Cho), and creatine (Cr) were analyzed in all patients. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed, and the threshold value for tumor differentiation was determined. Diagnosis of these lesions was assigned by means of histopathology and follow-up. Results  Diagnostic-quality 3D 1H-MRS with quantifiable Cho, Cr, and NAA peaks was obtained in 92.9% of the cases. The Cho/NAA and Cho/Cr ratios were significantly higher in recurrent tumor than in radiation injury (P P = 0.02). The Cho/Cr and Cho/NAA ratios were significantly higher in radiation injury than in normal-appearing white matter (P P = 0.01). Using receiver operating characteristic analysis, the resulting sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy of 3D 1H-MRS were 94.1%, 100%, and 96.2%, respectively, based on the cut-off values of 1.71 for Cho/Cr or 1.71 for Cho/NAA or both as tumor criterion. Conclusion  3D 1H-MRS could differentiate recurrent tumor from radiation injury in patients with recurrent contrast-enhancing lesions in the vicinity of the previously treated gliomas.
