Predicting the potential distribution of a non-native species can assist management efforts to mitigate impacts on recipient ecosystems. However, such predictions are lacking for marine species, such as the non-native regal demoiselle, Neopomacentrus cyanomos, that is currently expanding its distribution in the western Atlantic. We used correlative species distribution models with three common algorithms to predict suitable habitat for N. cyanomos in the region. We compared models developed using native, non-native, and global occurrences to differentiate drivers across separate ranges using a suite of 12 environmental characteristics. While final models included an ensemble of variables, the majority ranked the combined effect of temperature variables as a key predictor correlated with the distribution of N. cyanomos. Habitat suitability increased as water temperatures increased beyond 16 °C and where annual thermal ranges were greater than 10 °C at the shallowest depth with substrate within a study cell (~ 9.2 km2 resolution). Habitat suitability also increased where maximum surface temperatures were greater than 27 °C. In the non-native range, the proportion of reef available in each cell was another important variable increasing the suitable habitat for N. cyanomos. Our models predicted high habitat suitability for N. cyanomos throughout the Greater Caribbean, in higher latitudes along North and South American Atlantic coasts, in the eastern Pacific Ocean, and highlights key areas where managers can monitor and target potential removal efforts. Three populations of the solar-powered sea slug Elysia crispata on reefs from the southern Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean were analyzed. The aim was to describe and compare the changes in abundance and size of this species in different localities, as a function of depth and time-of-day. We hypothesized that differences in abundance would be related to locality, time of the day and depth, and differences in size would be related to locality and time of the day. Using snorkeling and SCUBA diving, all individuals within quadrats were counted and measured. A total of 680 organisms were recorded at Verde, Arcas and Puerto Morelos (PM) reefs at five times of the day (sunrise, morning, zenith, evening, and night) and depths of 0–13 m. Zero inflated negative binomial (ZINB) regressions adjusted to abundance data showed that E. crispata in Arcas and Verde reefs is expected to be more abundant (> 50) in shallow depths (< 2 m) at any time of the day except sunrise, whereas a low abundance (≤ 1 organism) is predicted in PM regardless of depth and time-of-day. According to linear models, size was not related to depth, but was related to locality and time-of-day, with sea slugs from Arcas and Verde having similar size, and both larger than those in PM. The Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico is a carbonate platform well-known for extensive karst networks of densely stratified aquifer ecosystems. This aquifer supports diverse anchialine fauna, including species of the globally distributed anchialine shrimp genus Typhlatya (Atyidae). Four species (T. campecheae, T. pearsei, T. dzilamensis and T. mitchelli) are endemic to the Peninsula, of which three are federally listed in Mexico. This first integrative evaluation (i.e., molecular, morphological, broad geographic and type locality sampling, and environmental data) of Yucatán Typhlatya reveals considerable species identity conflict in prior phylogenetic assessments, broad species ranges, syntopy within cave systems and five genetic lineages (of which two are new to science). Despite sampling from the type locality of endangered T. campecheae, specimens (and molecular data) were indistinguishable from vulnerable T. pearsei. Ancestral/divergence reconstructions support convergent evolution of a low-salinity ancestor for a post-Paleogene arc Yucatán + Cuba Typhlatya clade within the anchialine Atyidae clade. A secondary adaptation for the coastal-restricted euryhaline (2–37 psu), Typhlatya dzilamensis (unknown conservation status) was identified, while remaining species lineages were low-salinity (< 5 psu) adapted and found within the meteoric lens of inland and coastal caves. Urban streams provide important ecosystem services to cities' population, from the maintenance of urban biodiversity, temperature, humidity and air quality to improving aesthetics and provision of natural areas for recreation. However, these streams are under multiple-stressors, including artificialization of the channel and flow, poor water quality and cut of riparian vegetation which puts in risk their ecological integrity and consequently their services. In this study, we aimed to understand variations in macroinvertebrate communities and in biological condition as a response to flow and water quality, by following a Mediterranean urban stream over 8 months (December–July). With a monthly periodicity, we sampled invertebrate communities and characterized in situ water physicochemical parameters. The urban stream studied showed a high variation of environmental factors over time. Invertebrate communities were generally poor, with some Ephemeroptera (Baetis sp.) but was dominated by Chironomidae and Oligochaeta that changed over time alongside with environmental conditions. Biological quality based on the Portuguese Invertebrates Index (IPtIS) varied between poor and bad. Multivariate community patterns (at genus level) showed variations in communities over time, as well as in their biological trait patterns (invertebrates' maximal size, reproduction mode, resistance form, feeding habits and locomotion mode). Periods displaying worse biological quality, less diverse communities and lower functional richness corresponded to peaks of discharge, higher conductivity and hardness while the best quality communities were found under lower nitrate concentrations. Our study points out that the detection of impacts or recovery in urban streams through invertebrate communities might require at least the use of genus level as family level does not detect smoother changes. Communities reflect the complex interplay of environmental variables affecting structural and functional natural patterns and ultimately the biological condition of this urban stream. The diversity and distribution of benthic amphipods has been explored in the Alacranes Reef, which is the largest coral reef ecosystem in the Gulf of Mexico. New insights into species richness, spatial distribution and extension of geographical ranges are presented by using data from published records and field surveys. A total of 117 species have been recorded, 9 of which are potentially new to science, 39 of which have new geographical records, and 7 are non-indigenous and previously reported in the literature as potentially invasive. Based on the use of a species-richness indicator (Chao 2), the expected species number is 40% higher, up to 200 spp., when compared to the observed species richness. The spatial distribution of amphipods varied significantly as a function of habitat type, showing the highest richness values on coral patches and the major abundances on man-made structures, such as navigation buoys and fishing traps. Multivariate analyses suggested the distinction between three taxonomically diverse species assemblages that showed similar ecological affinities, i.e. those on: (1) soft-bottom environments, grouping bare substrata and seagrass beds habitats; (2) hard-bottom environments, grouping coral patch and reef wall habitats; and (3) artificial substrata. The results highlight the importance of this reef ecosystem for a high amphipod diversity, but it is susceptible to future modifications in the presence of non-indigenous species, potentially invasive, on artificial substrata. Improvement of the energy efficiency of residential buildings must ensure compliance with cost optimality criteria, assuming a specific lifespan of the building. At the same time, the energy retrofit of buildings ought to preserve their intrinsic architectural and heritage value. Portuguese residential buildings constructed before 1960 did not follow any energy efficiency rules. They represent 29% of the housing stock in the country and there is a high potential for increasing their energy efficiency. However, it costs more to implement envelope energy efficiency measures through retrofitting works than to provide for them in new buildings. An evaluation based on cost optimality criteria should therefore be performed. This work evaluates the energy performance of a Portuguese reference building typical of the pre-1960 building stock for different thicknesses of thermal insulation retrofit solutions (roof, facade, and ground floor) and systems. The study describes a sensitivity analysis that took a range of climate data, intervention costs, energy prices, discount rates, and energy needs into account. Sewer inlet structures are vital components of urban drainage systems and their operational conditions can largely affect the overall performance of the system. However, their hydraulic behaviour and the way in which it is affected by clogging is often overlooked in urban drainage models, thus leading to misrepresentation of system performance and, in particular, of flooding occurrence. In the present paper, a novel methodology is proposed to stochastically model stormwater urban drainage systems, taking the impact of sewer inlet operational conditions (e.g. clogging due to debris accumulation) on urban pluvial flooding into account. The proposed methodology comprises three main steps: (i) identification of sewer inlets most prone to clogging based upon a spatial analysis of their proximity to trees and evaluation of sewer inlet locations; (ii) Monte Carlo simulation of the capacity of inlets prone to clogging and subsequent simulation of flooding for each sewer inlet capacity scenario, and (iii) delineation of stochastic flood hazard maps. The proposed methodology was demonstrated using as case study design storms as well as two real storm events observed in the city of Coimbra (Portugal), which reportedly led to flooding in different areas of the catchment. The results show that sewer inlet capacity can indeed have a large impact on the occurrence of urban pluvial flooding and that it is essential to account for variations in sewer inlet capacity in urban drainage models. Overall, the stochastic methodology proposed in this study constitutes a useful tool for dealing with uncertainties in sewer inlet operational conditions and, as compared to more traditional deterministic approaches, it allows a more comprehensive assessment of urban pluvial flood hazard, which in turn enables better-informed flood risk assessment and management decisions.
