Preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species is an important management action. Identifying the characteristics of lakes that are susceptible to invasion creates an opportunity for management groups to prioritize limited resources for high-risk areas. In this study, we leveraged big data from a popular fishing app and other publicly available sources of environmental and human-use exposure measurements to develop machine learning models to predict aquatic invasive species presence in 30,375 lakes in the upper Mississippi river basin of the United States. Our results predicted that an additional 665, 771, 544, 703, and 638 lakes in the basin are invaded or at high risk of invasion by Eurasian watermilfoil, curly-leaf pondweed, rusty crayfish, Chinese mystery snail, and dreissenid mussels, respectively. Lake invasions were predicted by a combination of environmental, human-use exposure, and community dynamics variables. Features that made a lake more attractive to recreationists were consistently important across our models including the presence of a boat ramp, larger lake size, and surrounding natural landscape. The importance of co-occurring invasive species in some models could reflect several scenarios including invasional meltdown, facilitation among species, similar pathways for introduction, or similar response to the environment. Our models predicted a higher proportion of invasions in less popular lakes compared to known invasions. The finding underscores the potential importance of less popular lakes in the invasion process and suggests that the detection of invasions may be lower in these lakes. The global COVID-19 pandemic resulted in many jurisdictions implementing orders restricting the movements of people to inhibit virus transmission, with recreational angling often either not permitted or access to fisheries and/or related infrastructure being prevented. Following the lifting of restrictions, initial angler surveys and licence sales suggested increased participation and effort, and altered angler demographics, but with evidence remaining limited. Here, we overcome this evidence gap by identifying temporal changes in angling interest, licence sales, and angling effort in world regions by comparing data in the 'pre-pandemic' (up to and including 2019); 'acute pandemic' (2020) and 'COVID-acclimated' (2021) periods. We then identified how changes can inform the development of more resilient and sustainable recreational fisheries. Interest in angling (measured here as angling-related internet search term volumes) increased substantially in all regions during 2020. Patterns in licence sales revealed marked increases in some countries during 2020 but not in others. Where licence sales increased, this was rarely sustained in 2021; where there were declines, these related to fewer tourist anglers due to movement restrictions. Data from most countries indicated a younger demographic of people who participated in angling in 2020, including in urban areas, but this was not sustained in 2021. These short-lived changes in recreational angling indicate efforts to retain younger anglers could increase overall participation levels, where efforts can target education in appropriate angling practices and create more urban angling opportunities. These efforts would then provide recreational fisheries with greater resilience to cope with future global crises, including facilitating the ability of people to access angling opportunities during periods of high societal stress. Temporary summer stratification is probably a common, but easily overlooked phenomenon in many shallow lakes, because short-term temperature stratification and mixing events are not easily discovered by routine samplings. We used two years of high frequency measurements and monitoring of 5-m deep and hypereutrophic Lake Ormstrup, Denmark to study the dynamics of temporary stratification and its effects on oxygen concentrations, nutrient cycling, greenhouse gas emissions and fish habitat use. Temporary stratification followed by complete mixing of the water column occurred several times each summer, but its duration was highly variable between years despite only small climatic variations. Anoxia at depths greater than 2–3 m developed within a few days after stratification. During anoxia fish accumulated in the upper 2 m and high accumulation of phosphate (up to 1.34 mg/l), ammonia (up to 2.32 mg/l) and greenhouse gases (methane up to 5 mg/l) occurred at depths greater than 2–3 m that were released at mixing. Lake Ormstrup is an example of how very dynamic, unpredictable, and variable mixing conditions develop each summer with significant implications for fish habitat use, nutrient dynamics and greenhouse gas emissions. Inland fisheries make substantial contributions to food security and livelihoods locally, regionally, and globally but their conservation and management have been largely overlooked by policy makers. In an effort to remedy this limited recognition, a cross-sectoral community of scientists, practitioners, and policy makers from around the world convened a high-level meeting in 2015 at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations headquarters in Rome, Italy to develop recommendations for sustainable inland fisheries management. This meeting resulted in the production of the Rome Declaration, outlining ten key steps needed to achieve responsible inland fisheries. When the Ten Steps were conceived, they were framed in a global context because inland fisheries around the world face similar challenges, and it was hoped that these large-scale and ambitious steps would draw the attention of regional or international bodies for greater investment in their proper management. Most inland fisheries, however, are managed at a local (often community, watershed, or waterbody) scale with the "on-the-ground" practitioners, managers, assessment biologists, and stewardship officers responsible for achieving the promise of the Ten Steps. Here, we reflect on the relevance of the Ten Steps to practitioners using six regional case studies from around the globe (North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa) to identify the extent to which existing efforts align with the Ten Steps and where there are opportunities to do more. Learning what is effective from local/regional actions should better inform a more global "action plan" and provide tangible guidance for implementation recognizing that global guidance needs to be informed by and acted upon by local practitioners. We conclude by considering the common challenges, synergies, and other emergent properties that arise from these case studies, and use these as a path forward to advancing responsible management of inland fisheries through the Rome Declaration. Of particular importance is the need to balance the high-level aspirational goals of the Ten Steps with the local cultural, socio-economic, and institutional realities that ultimately influence how humans interact with fisheries resources and aquatic ecosystems. This assessment provides valuable information on how to refine and implement the Ten Steps recognizing that success will require coordinated efforts among on-the-ground practitioners, scientists, stakeholders, rightsholders and international decision makers. Technology that is developed for or adopted by the recreational fisheries sector (e.g., anglers and the recreational fishing industry) has led to rapid and dramatic changes in how recreational anglers interact with fisheries resources. From improvements in finding and catching fish to emulating their natural prey and accessing previously inaccessible waters, to anglers sharing their exploits with others, technology is completely changing all aspects of recreational fishing. These innovations would superficially be viewed as positive from the perspective of the angler (aside from the financial cost of purchasing some technologies), yet for the fisheries manager and policy maker, technology may create unintended challenges that lead to reactionary or even ill-defined approaches as they attempt to keep up with these changes. The goal of this paper is to consider how innovations in recreational fishing are changing the way that anglers interact with fish, and thus how recreational fisheries management is undertaken. We use a combination of structured reviews and expert analyses combined with descriptive case studies to highlight the many ways that technology is influencing recreational fishing practice, and, relatedly, what it means for changing how fisheries and/or these technologies need to be managed—from changes in fish capture, to fish handling, to how anglers share information with each other and with managers. Given that technology is continually evolving, we hope that the examples provided here lead to more and better monitoring of technological innovations and engagement by the management and policy authorities with the recreational fishing sector. Patterns of animal migration and the ecological forces that shape them have been studied for centuries. Yet ecological impacts caused by the migration, such as altered predator–prey interactions and effects on community structure, remain poorly understood. This is to a large extent due to the scarcity of naturally replicated migration systems with negative controls, that is, ecosystems without migration. In this study, we tested whether partial migration of certain species within the overall prey community affects foraging ecology of top predators and thereby alters energy pathways in food webs. We carried out the study in independent replicated freshwater lake systems, four with and four without opportunity for prey migration. Specifically, we compared predator foraging mode in lakes where cyprinid prey fish perform seasonal partial migrations into connected streams with lakes lacking migratory opportunities for prey fish. We found clear seasonal bottom-up effects of prey migration on predators, including changes in size structure and total biomass of ingested prey, size-specific changes in littoral versus pelagic origin of diet, and a higher degree of feast-and-famine for predators in systems with migratory prey. Our analyses further showed that partially migratory prey species constitute a larger part of the prey community in systems that allow migration. Hence, prey migrations have important implications for predator foraging ecology and may cause seasonal shifts in the importance of their supporting energy pathways. Removal of cyprinid fish is a widely used biomanipulation tool to transform turbid shallow eutrophic lakes in north temperate regions into a clear water state. We here evaluate the removal of cyprinids from streams as a supplement to lake fishing. Since cyprinids often aggregate in high densities in lake inlet/outlet streams during winter migration, removal of fish in this space-confined habitat may be cost-efficient as compared to fish removal in the lake habitat. In two consecutive years, we annually removed up to 35% of the dominant cyprinids from an inlet stream to a lake and argue that this could easily be increased with a more targeted fishing effort. Concurrently, we monitored species- and length-specific variation in migration propensity, to explore how this relates to efficient fish removal. Smaller planktivores generally had a much higher migratory propensity than larger benthivores. Hence, stream fishing specifically targets species and size groups that are less efficiently controlled with traditional lake fishing methods. As a rule of thumb, stream fishing is most efficient when water temperature is 2-6°C. Prior to implementing fish removals from streams, the potential evolutionary consequences of the targeted removal of migratory phenotypes should be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pike in the western Baltic Sea live on the edge of their salinity tolerance. Under physiologically challenging conditions, organism may respond by moving to environmentally more benign areas during critical periods, such as during spawning. We hypothesised that pike in a brackish lagoon (8-10 ppt salinity) would perform spawning- and feeding-related movements between areas with different salinity regimes. Twenty-two pike were caught prior to spawning, tagged with acoustic transmitters, and their movements were tracked for 18 months. Pike showed two main patterns of movements that were consistent within individuals across two years. Whereas some individuals stayed in the lagoon year-round, most pike left the lagoon for longer periods after spawning and returned to the lagoon prior to following year's spawning season. We found no evidence that probability of moving out of the lagoon co-varied with either length or condition factor. Despite the fact that the lagoon's salinity is close to the reported upper limit for pike egg development, results indicated that all pike spawned in the lagoon. Correspondingly, genetic data showed that all fish belonged to the same reproductive population unit. Movement patterns thus appear to reflect individual variation in home-range and/or resource optimisation following ideal free principles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present study, we aim at relating Forbes' remarkable paper on 'The lake as a microcosm', published 125 years ago, to the present status of knowledge in our own research group. Hence, we relate the observations Forbes made to our own microcosm, Lake Krankesjön in southern Sweden, that has been intensively studied by several research groups for more than three decades. Specifically, we focus on the question: Have we made any significant progress or did Forbes and colleagues blaze the trail through the unknown wilderness and we are mainly paving that intellectual road? We conclude that lakes are more isolated than many other biomes, but have, indeed, many extensions, for example, input from the catchment, fishing and fish migration. We also conclude that irrespective of whether lakes should be viewed as microcosms or not, the paper by Forbes has been exceptionally influential and still is, especially since it touches upon almost all aspects of the lake ecosystem, from individual behaviour to food web interactions and environmental issues. Therefore, there is no doubt that even if 125 years have passed, Forbes' paper still is a source of inspiration and deserves to be read. Hence, although aquatic ecology has made considerable progress over the latest century, Forbes might be viewed as one of the major pioneers and visionary scientists of limnology. To showcase the importance of genotype × environment interactions and the presence of predation risk in the experimental assessment of boldness in fish, we investigated boldness in terms of feeding behavior and refuge use in two genetically different populations of juvenile carp ( Cyprinus carpio) in two replicated experimental conditions in ponds and laboratory tanks. The populations were expected to exhibit genetic differences in boldness due to differential evolutionary adaptation to low-predation-risk pond aquaculture conditions. Boldness was measured in variants of open-field trials with and without implementation of additional predation risk-stimuli by angling on feeding spots. Without explicit implementation of risk, genotypes adapted to low-risk environments, i.e., domesticated mirror carp behaved consistently bolder than their less domesticated scaled conspecifics in the pond environment, but not in the laboratory environment. When we implemented artificial risk-stimuli by angling on previously safe feeding spots, boldness differences among genotypes also emerged in the laboratory environment, indicating strong genotype × environment effects on boldness behavior of carp. The expected genetic basis of boldness differences among genotypes was clearly supported in the pond environment, while the laboratory study revealed these patterns only under inclusion of explicit risk-stimuli. Our study thus underscores that boldness may involve both a basal component that is expressed independently of obvious predation risk (e.g., in open fields) and a component revealed in relation to explicit predation risk, and both dimensions may respond differently in behavioral tests. North American signal crayfish ( Pacifastacus leniusculus) are invasive in Europe and pose a serious threat to indigenous European crayfish such as the noble crayfish ( Astacus astacus). This is mainly because signal crayfish is the carrier of crayfish plague agent, Aphanomyces astaci, which freshwater crayfish from all other continents are highly susceptible to. Until recently, the distribution of signal crayfish in Danish streams has been considered local and restricted to a small geographical area. Here we present data demonstrating that signal crayfish are now widespread in Denmark, including the largest Danish river, River Gudenå. For one of the rivers where co-existing signal crayfish and indigenous noble crayfish were documented, sensitive molecular tests could not detect the crayfish plague agent Aphanomyces astaci in either species. Hence, it seems that not all signal crayfish are chronic carriers of the disease. For the remaining freshwater systems with the introduced signal crayfish, the infection status is presently unknown. Large areas of the freshwater systems in Denmark also remain unexplored with respect to presence/absence of signal crayfish and noble crayfish. Nevertheless, our preliminary data that covers about 14% of the Danish rivers, strongly suggests that signal crayfish should be considered as a common invader that poses an increased threat to the biota in Danish streams, in particular for the indigenous noble crayfish. Shallow eutrophic lakes commonly exist in two alternative stable states: a clear-water state and a turbid water state. A number of mechanisms, including both abiotic and biotic processes, buffer the respective states against changes, whereas other mechanisms likely drive transitions between states. Our earlier research shows that a large proportion of zooplanktivorous fish populations in shallow lakes undertake seasonal migrations where they leave the lake during winter and migrate back to the lake in spring. Based on our past research, we propose a number of scenarios of how feedback processes between the individual and ecosystem levels may affect stability of alternative stable states in shallow lakes when mediated by fish migration. Migration effects on shallow lakes result from processes at different scales, from the individual to the ecosystem. Our earlier research has shown that ecosystem properties, including piscivore abundance and zooplankton productivity, affect the individual state of zooplanktivorous fish, such as growth rate or condition. Individual state, in turn, affects the relative proportion and timing of migrating zooplanktivorous fish. This change, in turn, may stabilize states or cause runaway processes that eventually lead to state shifts. Consequently, such knowledge of processes coupled to seasonal migration of planktivorous fish should increase our understanding of shallow lake dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stocking 0+ pike in shallow eutrophic lakes as an indirect way to facilitate clear water by increased phytoplankton grazing by zooplankton, has been used in several studies with varying success. Lack of piscivory could be one reason for poor impact of the pike stockings, on reducing the 0+ cyprinid fish population. In relation to this, we present data on food and feeding habits of 936 0+ pike (Esox lucius L.) (2–18 cm) sampled during five years in a small eutrophic lake undergoing biomanipulation. Overall, the food of 0+ pike followed a sequence of diet shifts including microcrustacea, insects, macrocrustacea and finally vertebrates (fish) with increase in pike length. Despite a high abundance of potential prey fish in the lake, in general less than 50% of the pike were piscivorous until a length of 10.1–13.7 cm. As piscivory increased, the principal prey fish (0+ roach) apparently displayed antipredatorial behaviour which decreased their availability for 0+ pike. We conclude that lack of piscivory caused by e.g. anti predator tactics by prey fish, may reduce the impact of 0+ pike stockings in lake restoration projects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biomanipulation by stocking with YOY pike Esox lucius has been shownto be a useful tool in the restoration of shallow hypertrophic lakes. The success of such stocking depends partly on the standing stock of the YOY pike in the first 2-3 months following stocking, this in turn depending on habitat type and abundance in the lake. The present study evaluated the general habitat use and preferences of YOY pike and the suitability of artificial submerged habitats formed by small laid out spruce trees Picea omorica using Point Abundance Sampling by Electrofishing (PASE). This sampling method was assessed as being suitable for catching and quantifying small pike. While very few pike were present in either the dominant emergent vegetation Phragmites australis or the subdominant vegetation Typha spp. in June and July, they were present in significantly greater numbers in the artificial habitats. This suggests that the use of spruce trees as artificial habitats in biomanipulation projects could potentially enhance the standing stock of YOY pike. In August, in contrast, habitat utilization by theYOY pike did not differ from that expected if they used the habitatsrandomly. This suggests that YOY pike change their habitat utilization as a function of their size. Thus they use habitats with a complexstructure in the early summer, but in late summer when they are larger, they use habitats with a less complex structure such as Phragmites and Typha.
