Protection of personnel against ionising exposure is necessary to prevent occurrence of biological risks. The objective of this study is to arranged light and heavy nuclei at the surface state particle of composite geopolymer concrete when filler with metal (Ni or Fe) for X-ray shielding applications. The composite fly ash geopolymer concrete with fillers Ni and fly ash geopolymer concrete with Fe as a shield for X-ray radiation has been successfully synthesized by a simple method. The shielding composites were carried out using Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-ray mobile to determine optical properties, structural properties, surface morphology, and shielding performance. In this study shows strong linear correlation between structural properties and the effectiveness of X-ray shielding. The best composite as an X-ray radiation shield is composite concrete geopolymer with AC and Ni as a filler indicated by higher linear attenuation coefficient μ due to present combination between heavy and light nuclei at the surface state of particle, consequently, produce high stability structural and optical properties, and bonding characteristics. The results in this study indicated composite concrete geopolymer fly ash with AC and Ni as a filler with sharp nodule at the surface state looks like prickly ball as a new composite for X-ray shield. Microplastics (MPs) have become an emerging global pollutant due to their widespread dispersion and potential threats to marine ecosystems. However, studies on MPs in estuarine and coastal ecosystems of Bangladesh are very limited. Here, we conducted the first study on abundance, distribution, characteristics, and risk assessment of microplastics in the sediment of Karnaphuli River estuary, Bangladesh. Microplastic particles were extracted from sediments of 30 stations along the estuary by density separation and then enumerated and characterized using a stereomicroscope and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. In the collected sediment of the Karnaphuli River estuary, the number of MPs varied from 22.29 to 59.5 items kg−1 of dry weight. The mean abundance was higher in the downstream and left banks of the estuary, whereas the predominant shape, colour, and size of MPs were films (35%), and white (19%), and 1–5 mm (30.38%), respectively. Major polymer types were polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene, polyethylene, cellulose, and nylon. MPs were found to pose risks (low to high) in the sediment of the estuary, with the highest risk occurring at one station near a sewage outlet, according to the results of risk analyses using the pollution risk index, polymer risk index (H), contamination factors, and pollution load index (PLI). The single value index, PLI, clearly demonstrated that all sampling sites were considerably polluted with microplastics (PLI > 1). H values showed toxic polymers, even in lower proportions, possess higher polymeric hazard scores and vice versa. This investigation uncovered new insights on the status of MPs in the sediments of the Karnaphuli River estuary, laying the groundwork for future research and control of microplastic pollution and management. In the present study we focused on the anti-asthmatic and antioxidant effects of Zingiber officinalis roscoe L. (ZO) aqueous extract. This study includes 20 adult male rats, which were grouped into four; Group I: control group; Group II: asthmatic group (Ovalbumin sensitized/challenge model, Oval group); Group III: received ovalbumin sensitized/challenge associated a dose of 207 mg/kg body weight (BW) of ZO (Oval + D1 group); Group IV: received ovalbumin sensitized/challenge associated a dose of 414 mg/k BW of ZO (Oval + D2 group). After 21 days, blood and lung samples were collected for biochemical, hematological, and histopathological analyses. The ameliorative effect of ZO phytochemical compounds was also assessed by in silico approach on transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) receptors. The oxidative/antioxidative status was evaluated in the lung tissues. Our results show that ZO extract alleviated the ovalbumin-induced hematological and biochemical disruptions associated oxidative injury. In fact, white and red blood cells (WBC and RBC, respectively), aspartate aminotransaminase (ASAT), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were significantly disrupted (p < 0.05) in Oval group and alleviated following ZO treatment. Besides, several histopathological features were outlined in lung tissues of Oval group. Interestingly, ZO was found to exert ameliorative effects on tissue level. In silico analyses, particularly the binding affinities, the number of H-bonds, the embedding distance and the molecular interactions of ZO phytochemical compounds with either STAT6 or TNF-α supported the in vivo results. The present study focuses on the indiscriminate disposal of personal protective equipment (PPEs) and resulting environmental contamination during the 3rd wave of COVID-19-driven global pandemic in the Chittagong metropolitan area, Bangladesh. Because of the very high rate of infection by the delta variant of this virus, the use of PPEs by the public is increased significantly to protect the ingestion/inhalation of respiratory droplets in the air. However, it is a matter of solicitude that general people throw away the PPEs to the dwelling environment unconsciously. With the increase of inappropriate disposal of PPEs (i.e., mostly the disposable face masks made from plastic microfibers), the possibility of transmission of the virus to the general public cannot be neglected completely. This is because this virus can survive for several days on the inanimate matter like plastics and fibers. At the same time, the result of environmental contamination by microplastic/microfiber has been widespread which eventually creates the worst impact on ecosystems and organisms. Purpose: This study evaluates using ultrasound the changes that occur in wall thickness, blood flow velocity, and Doppler indices of the common carotid arteries (CCAs) in healthy Saudi adult males who are current smokers. Methods: A prospective study was performed between May 2011 and May 2013 with a group consisting of nonsmokers ( n = 180; 36 %) and current smokers ( n = 320; 64 %) with a mean age of 25 ± 2.6 years. In all cases, the CCA ultrasound scanning protocol met the standards established by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) to measure intima media thickness (IMT), peak systolic velocity (PSV), and end diastolic velocity (EDV). The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze the results. Results: Significant linear and positive correlations were noted between the level of daily consumption of cigarettes smoked and carotid mean IMT, PSV, and Doppler indices, while a linear and negative correlation was present between cigarette smoking and mean EDV. These findings were significant when compared with the results for nonsmokers. Conclusions: Cigarette smoking is associated with CCA morphological changes caused by significant impairment of arterial endothelial function, and an increase in daily cigarette consumption significantly leads to a decrease in the blood flow velocity of CCAs.
