This paper presents the implementation of a slope stability method for rainfall-induced shallow landslides in CRITERIA-1D, which is an agro-hydrological model based on Richards' equation for transient infiltration and redistribution processes. CRITERIA-1D can simulate the presence and development of roots and canopies over space and time, the regulation of transpiration activity based on real meteorological data, and the evaporation reduction caused by canopies. The slope can be considered composed of a multi-layered soil, leading to the possibility of simulating the bedrock and of setting an initial water table level. CRITERIA-1D can consider different soil horizons characterized by different hydraulic conductivities and soil water retention curves, thus allowing the simulation of capillarity barriers. The validation of the proposed physically based slope stability model was conducted through the simulation of the collected water content and water potential data of an experimental slope. The monitored slope is located close to Montuè, in the north-eastern sector of Oltrepò Pavese (northern Apennines—Italy). Just close to the monitoring station, a shallow landslide occurred in 2014 at a depth of around 100 cm. The results show the utility of agro-hydrological modeling schemes in modeling the antecedent soil moisture condition and in reducing the overestimation of landslides events detection, which is an issue for early warning systems and slope management related to rainfall-induced shallow landslides. The presented model can be used also to test different bioengineering solutions for slope stabilization, especially when data about rooting systems and plant physiology are known. Soil-atmosphere interaction has implications in different scientific research contexts and is increasingly investigated through field measurements. This paper reports a detailed description of interaction between shallow soil and atmosphere at two test sites in Oltrepò Pavese area (Northern Italy). The two test sites are in the same climatic area but are characterised by different geological features. In fact, the first objective is to compare the behaviour of two different soils, namely a clayey-sandy silt (CL) and a silty clay (CH), under similar meteorological events. Soil-atmosphere interaction is studied on the basis of long-term (about 87 and 42 months for the two test sites, respectively) monitoring data of both volumetric water content and soil water potential, recorded at different depths along two vertical soil profiles in the first two metres from ground level. Field measurements, together with meteorological data such as precipitation and air temperature, allow for clear identification of the seasonal fluctuations of unsaturated soil hydraulic properties. To infer detailed information, the recorded data were processed and relationships between soil water potential and water content were investigated. Different time spans, from several months to a few days, even including single rainy events, are considered to show the hydraulic soil behaviour. The hysteretic cycles of water content with respect to soil water potential and non-equilibrium flow are highlighted. In particular, the measured soil water potential is in the range of 0–800 kPa and of 0–1500 kPa for the CL and CH soil, respectively. At both sites, the observed hysteretic cycles are more frequent in the hot season (summer) than in the cold season (winter) and tend to reduce with depth. The experimental results are compared with the soil water characteristic curves (SWCCs) to assess whether and to what extent the SWCCs are reliable in modelling the hydraulic behaviour of partially saturated soils, under atmospheric forcing, at least in the considered climatic contexts. Soil water content is a key parameter for representing water dynamics in soils. Its prediction is fundamental for different practical applications, such as identifying shallow landslides triggering. Support vector machine (SVM) is a machine learning technique, which can be used to predict the temporal trend of a quantity since training from past data. SVM was applied to a test slope of Oltrepò Pavese (northern Italy), where meteorological parameters coupled with soil water content at different depths (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 m) were measured. Two SVM models were developed for water content assessment: (i) model 1, considering rainfall amount, air temperature, air humidity, net solar radiation, and wind speed; (ii) model 2, considering the same predictors of model 1 together with antecedent condition parameters (cumulated rainfall of 7, 30, and 60 days; mean air temperature of 7, 30, and 60 days). SVM model 2 showed significantly higher satisfactory results than model 1, for both training and test phases and for all the considered soil levels. SVM models trends were implemented in a methodology of slope safety factor assessment. For a real event occurred in the tested slope, the triggering time was correctly predicted using data estimated by SVM model based on antecedent meteorological conditions. This confirms the necessity of including these predictors for building a SVM technique able to estimate correctly soil moisture dynamics in time. Metallic states appearing at interfaces between dissimilar insulating oxides exhibit intriguing phenomena such as superconductivity and magnetism. Despite tremendous progress in understanding their origins, very little is known about how to control the conduction pathways and the distribution of charge carriers. Using optical spectroscopic measurements and density-functional theory (DFT) simulations, we examine the effect of SrTiO3 (STO) spacer layer thickness on the optical transparency and carrier distribution in La δ-doped STO superlattices. We experimentally observe that these metallic superlattices remain highly transparent to visible light; a direct consequence of the appropriately large gap between the O 2p and Ti 3d states. In superlattices with relatively thin STO layers, we predict that three-dimensional conduction would occur due to appreciable overlap of quantum mechanical wavefunctions between neighboring δ-doped layers. These results highlight the potential for using oxide heterostructures in optoelectronic devices by providing a unique route for creating novel transparent conducting oxides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reinforcement of shallow foundations of existing buildings is often obtained by using micropiles constructed through different kinds of technologies. This paper deals with some mechanical and structural aspects of a kind of innovative micropiles made with reinforced polyurethane resin. Three sample micropiles having different characteristics were installed and tested under compression in a site where a silty-clayey soil was present. On the basis of the test results, it was possible to evaluate which of the three sample micropiles offered the higher strength under compression load. This type of micropile was chosen for a deeper analysis regarding the main features linked to both the global mechanical behavior and the frictional resistance between the soil and the shaft surface. After a brief description of the construction method and the execution of the field load tests, the paper investigates the microstructure of the interface between soil and micropile. Moreover, some physical properties of the constitutive elements of the micropile are evaluated with the scope of calibrating the parameters required for a model of the micropile-soil mechanical interaction, recently introduced. The model seems to be suitable to interpret the mechanical field behavior of the structural element. The results suggest that even though the reinforced polyurethane resin micropiles present a rather low bearing capacity, the technology can be useful for underpinning works in very particular conditions. Stress-related psychiatric disorders are more prevalent in women than men. As hypersecretion of the stress neuromediator, corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) has been implicated in these disorders, sex differences in CRF sensitivity could underlie this disparity. Hyperarousal is a core symptom that is shared by stress-related disorders and this has been attributed to CRF regulation of the locus ceruleus (LC)-norepinephrine arousal system. We recently identified sex differences in CRF1 receptor (CRF1) signaling and trafficking that render LC neurons of female rats more sensitive to CRF and potentially less able to adapt to excess CRF compared with male rats. The present study used a genetic model of CRF overexpression to test the hypothesis that females would be more vulnerable to LC dysregulation by conditions of excess CRF. In both male and female CRF overexpressing (CRF-OE) mice, the LC was more densely innervated by CRF compared with wild-type controls. Despite the equally dense CRF innervation of the LC in male and female CRF-OE mice, LC discharge rates recorded in slices in vitro were selectively elevated in female CRF-OE mice. Immunoelectron microscopy revealed that this sex difference resulted from differential CRF1 trafficking. In male CRF-OE mice, CRF1 immunolabeling was prominent in the cytoplasm of LC neurons, indicative of internalization, a process that would protect cells from excessive CRF. However, in female CRF-OE mice, CRF1 labeling was more prominent on the plasma membrane, suggesting that the compensatory response of internalization was compromised. Together, the findings suggest that the LC-norepinephrine system of females will be particularly affected by conditions resulting in elevated CRF because of differences in receptor trafficking. As excessive LC activation has been implicated in the arousal components of stress-related psychiatric disorders, this may be a cellular mechanism that contributes to the increased incidence of these disorders in females. Although the higher incidence of stress-related psychiatric disorders in females is well documented, its basis is unknown. Here, we show that the receptor for corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), the neuropeptide that orchestrates the stress response, signals and is trafficked differently in female rats in a manner that could result in a greater response and decreased adaptation to stressors. Most cellular responses to CRF in the brain are mediated by CRF receptor (CRFr) association with the GTP-binding protein, Gs. Receptor immunoprecipitation studies revealed enhanced CRFr-Gs coupling in cortical tissue of unstressed female rats. Previous stressor exposure abolished this sex difference by increasing CRFr-Gs coupling selectively in males. These molecular results mirrored the effects of sex and stress on sensitivity of locus ceruleus (LC)-norepinephrine neurons to CRF. Differences in CRFr trafficking were also identified that could compromise stress adaptation in females. Specifically, stress-induced CRFr association with β-arrestin2, an integral step in receptor internalization, occurred only in male rats. Immunoelectron microscopy confirmed that stress elicited CRFr internalization in LC neurons of male rats exclusively, consistent with reported electrophysiological evidence for stress-induced desensitization to CRF in males. Together, these studies identified two aspects of CRFr function, increased cellular signaling and compromised internalization, which render CRF-receptive neurons of females more sensitive to low levels of CRF and less adaptable to high levels of CRF. CRFr dysfunction in females may underlie their increased vulnerability to develop stress-related pathology, particularly that related to increased activity of the LC-norepinephrine system, such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. Overproduction of phosphoprotein enriched in diabetes (PED, also known as phosphoprotein enriched in astrocytes-15 [PEA-15]) is a common feature of type 2 diabetes and impairs insulin action in cultured cells and in mice. Nevertheless, the potential role of PED in diabetic complications is still unknown. We studied the effect of PED overproduction and depletion on kidney function in animal and cellular models. Transgenic mice overexpressing PED (PEDTg) featured age-dependent increases of plasma creatinine levels and urinary volume, accompanied by expansion of the mesangial area, compared with wild-type littermates. Serum and kidney levels of TGF-β1 were also higher in 6- and 9-month-old PEDTg. Overexpression of PED in human kidney 2 cells significantly increased TGF-β1 levels, SMAD family members (SMAD)2/3 phosphorylation and fibronectin production. Opposite results were obtained following genetic silencing of PED in human kidney 2 cells by antisense oligonucleotides. Inhibition of phospholipase D and protein kinase C-β by 2-butanol and LY373196 respectively reduced TGF-β1, SMAD2/3 phosphorylation and fibronectin production. Moreover, inhibition of TGF-β1 receptor activity and SMAD2/3 production by SB431542 and antisense oligonucleotides respectively reduced fibronectin secretion by about 50%. TGF-β1 circulating levels were significantly reduced in Ped knockout mice and positively correlated with PED content in peripheral blood leucocytes of type 2 diabetic patients. These data indicate that PED regulates fibronectin production via phospholipase D/protein kinase C-β and TGF-β1/SMAD pathways in kidney cells. Overexpression of the gene encoding phosphoprotein enriched in astrocytes 15 (PEA15), also known as phosphoprotein enriched in diabetes (PED), causes insulin resistance and diabetes in transgenic mice and has been observed in type 2 diabetic individuals. The aim of this study was to investigate whether PEA15 overexpression occurs in individuals at high risk of diabetes and whether it is associated with specific type 2 diabetes subphenotypes. We analysed PEA15 expression in euglycaemic first-degree relatives (FDR) of type 2 diabetic subjects. The expression of PEA15 in peripheral blood leucocytes (PBLs) paralleled that in fat and skeletal muscle tissues. In PBLs from the FDR, PEA15 expression was two-fold higher than in euglycaemic individuals with no family history of diabetes (control subjects), both at the protein and the mRNA level ( p < 0.001). The expression of PEA15 was comparable in FDR and type 2 diabetic subjects and in each group close to one-third of the subjects expressed PEA15 levels more than 2 SD higher than the mean of control subjects. Subjects with IFG with at least one type 2 diabetes-affected FDR also overexpressed PEA15 ( p < 0.05). In all the groups analysed, PEA15 expression was independent of sex and unrelated to age, BMI, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic BP, and fasting cholesterol, triacylglycerol and glucose levels. However, in euglycaemic FDR of type 2 diabetic subjects, PEA15 expression was inversely correlated with insulin sensitivity ( r = −557, p = 0.01). We conclude that PEA15 overexpression represents a common defect in FDR of patients with type 2 diabetes and is correlated with reduced insulin sensitivity in these individuals. α1 Adrenergic receptors mediate a variety of physiological responses and have been well studied in the cardiovascular and peripheral nervous system. However, their role in the central nervous system remains ill defined because of the lack of highly specific ligands to the α1 receptor subtypes. Here, we have employed gene targeting to elucidate the role of α1d receptors in vivo. In addition to disrupting function, the insertion of the lacZ gene into the α1d receptor locus enabled the specific identification of cells expressing the α1d gene. These cells are localized in the cortex, hippocampus, olfactory bulb, dorsal geniculate and ventral posterolateral nuclei of the thalamus. Behaviorally, the α1d[sup -/-] mice show normal locomotor activity during the subjective day, or resting phase of their cycle. However, during subjective night, or active phase, wheel-running activity is significantly reduced in mutant mice. Furthermore, these mice show a reduction in exploratory rearing behavior in a novel cage environment. Lastly, α1d[sup -/-] mice show reduced hyperlocomotion after acute amphetamine administration. Together, these data reveal the functional importance of α1d adrenoceptors in mediating a variety of stimulus-induced changes in locomotor behaviors. While the sensitivity of noradrenergic neurons to environmental stimuli has been well documented, our data demonstrate that at least some of these post-synaptic responses are mediated by α1d adrenergic receptors. A 45-year-old woman was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for respiratory arrest. One day prior to admission, she had been nauseated and in a state of total exhaustion. On the night of admission she was unresponsive and developed gasping respiration. The patient was comatose with absent brainstem reflexes and appeared brain dead. Blood chemistry findings and brain magnetic resonance imaging were normal. Electroencephalogram revealed an alpha rhythmical activity unresponsive to painful or visual stimuli. The cerebrospinal fluid showed an albuminocytological dissociation. Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) was suspected. The electrophysiological evaluation revealed an inexcitability of all nerves. The pathological findings of the sural nerve biopsy indicated an axonal degeneration secondary to severe demyelination. GBS can very rarely present with coma and absent brainstem reflexes. This case illustrates the importance of electrophysiological tests and laboratory and imaging studies in patients with suspected brain death where a cause is not clearly determined. Abstract This study assessed whether repeated injections of d-amphetamine or apomorphine could induce sensitization to the disruptive effects of these psychomotor stimulants on sensorimotor gating in rats. In the first experiment, rats were given six pre-exposures to either 2.0 mg/kg d-amphetamine or saline before being tested for the effects of d-amphetamine (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 or 4.0 mg/kg, IP) on prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle (PPI) and locomotor activity. The tests for PPI confirmed that sensorimotor gating could be disrupted by a high dose of d-amphetamine (4.0mg/kg). However, comparison of the doseresponse curves for the drug and saline pre-exposed groups did not reveal evidence for sensitization to this d-amphetamine effect in drug-pre-exposed rats, despite indications that sensitization had developed to the locomotor stimulant effects of d-amphetamine. A similar pattern of results was obtained in a second experiment that examined the effects of apomorphine (0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8 mg/kg, SC) on PPI and locomotion in rats pre-exposed to 2.0 mg/kg of this drug or its vehicle. These findings demonstrate that treatments which induce sensitization to the behavioral activating effects of psychomotor stimulants do not necessarily produce sensitization to the disruptive effects of stimulants on sensorimotor gating. The Pb(Zr, Ti)O[sub 3] (PZT) disordered solid solution is widely used in piezoelectric applications owing to its excellent electromechanical properties. Six different structural phases have been observed for PZT at ambient pressure, each with different lattice parameters and average electric polarization. It is of significant interest to understand the microscopic origin of the complicated phase diagram and local structure of PZT. Here, using density functional theory calculations, we show that the distortions of the material away from the parent perovskite structure can be predicted from the local arrangement of the Zr and Ti cations. We use the chemical rules obtained from density functional theory to create a phenomenological model to simulate PZT structures. We demonstrate how changes in the Zr/Ti composition give rise to phase transitions in PZT through changes in the populations of various local Pb atom environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The unique properties of ferroelectric materials enable a plethora of applications, which are hindered by the phenomenon known as ferroelectric fatigue that leads to the degradation of ferroelectric properties with polarization cycling. Multiple microscopic models explaining fatigue have been suggested; however, the chemical origins remain poorly understood. Here, we utilize multimodal chemical imaging that combines atomic force microscopy with time-of-flight secondary mass spectrometry to explore the chemical phenomena associated with fatigue in PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (PZT) thin films. Investigations reveal that the degradation of ferroelectric properties is correlated with a local chemical change and migration of electrode ions into the PZT structure. Density functional theory simulations support the experimental results and demonstrate stable doping of the thin surface PZT layer with copper ions, leading to a decrease in the spontaneous polarization. Overall, the performed research allows for the observation and understanding of the chemical phenomena associated with polarization cycling and their effects on ferroelectric functionality. Ferroelectric fatigue degrades ferroelectric properties upon polarization cycling, but its underlying chemistry is poorly understood. Here, the authors show by multimodal chemical imaging that fatigue in PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 thin films is associated with Cu + ions migration from the electrode into the film structure. Using the van der Waals density functional with C09 exchange (vdW-DF-C09), which has been applied to describing a wide range of dispersion-bound systems, we explore the physical properties of prototypical ABO3 bulk ferroelectric oxides. Surprisingly, vdW-DF-C09 provides a superior description of experimental values for lattice constants, polarization and bulk moduli, exhibiting similar accuracy to the modified Perdew-Burke-Erzenhoff functional which was designed specifically for bulk solids (PBEsol). The relative performance of vdW-DF-C09 is strongly linked to the form of the exchange enhancement factor which, like PBEsol, tends to behave like the gradient expansion approximation for small reduced gradients. These results suggest the general-purpose nature of the class of vdW-DF functionals, with particular consequences for predicting material functionality across dense and sparse matter regimes. Multiferroic BiFeO3 exhibits excellent magnetoelectric coupling critical for magnetic information processing with minimal power consumption. However, the degenerate nature of the easy spin axis in the (111) plane presents roadblocks for real world applications. Here, we explore the stabilization and switchability of the weak ferromagnetic moments under applied epitaxial strain using a combination of first-principles calculations and group-theoretic analyses. We demonstrate that the antiferromagnetic moment vector can be stabilized along unique crystallographic directions ([110] and [-110]) under compressive and tensile strains. A direct coupling between the anisotropic antiferrodistortive rotations and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moria interactions drives the stabilization of the weak ferromagnetism. Furthermore, energetically competing C- and G-type magnetic orderings are observed at high compressive strains, suggesting that it may be possible to switch the weak ferromagnetism 'on' and 'off' under the application of strain.
