An adjoint-free four-dimensional variational (a4dVar) data assimilation (DA) is implemented in an operational ocean forecast system based on an eddy-resolving ocean general circulation model for the Northwestern Pacific. Validation of the system against independent observations demonstrates that fitting the model to time-dependent satellite altimetry during a 10-day DA window leads to substantial skill improvements in the succeeding 60-day hindcast. The a4dVar corrects representation of the Kuroshio path variation south of Japan by adjusting the dynamical balance between amplitude/wavelength of the meander and flow advection. A larger ensemble spread tends to reduce the skill in representing the observed sea surface height anomaly, suggesting that it is possible to use the ensemble information for quantifying the forecast error. The ensemble information is also utilized for modification of the background error covariance (BEC), which improves the accuracy of temperature and salinity distributions. The modified BEC yields the skill decline of the Kuroshio path variation during the 60-day hindcast period, and the ensemble sensitivity analysis shows that changes in the dynamical balance caused by the ensemble BEC result in such skill deterioration. In July 2020, a stationary atmospheric front over Japan caused persistent, nearly continuous rain for most of the month that resulted in new historical highest rainfall records in several areas and caused serious river floods, landslides, and debris-flow events. An existing hindcast and forecast ocean circulation model that includes climatological discharge information of major rivers failed to represent the extreme river discharge under heavy rainfall. New experiments were conducted using real-time river discharge information based on Today's Earth CaMa-Flood simulation that includes 368 rivers in Japan. The inclusion of real-time river discharge improved the salinity bias in the near-surface waters. The differences were significant compared to the observations in the heavy rain region (i.e., Ariake Bay and Tosa Bay), and insignificant at offshore stations. The ensemble experiments of real-time river discharge cases suggested the difference between the climatological and the real-time river discharge experiments was not random, but was robust. The freshening water changed the shelf circulation, and its far-reaching effect appeared hundreds of kilometers away from the shore. Passive particle tracking was conducted for examining the cross-shelf exchange. More particles released from Bungo Channel went offshore in near-surface water when the real-time river discharge was used compared to using the climatology discharge. Particles released in Tosa Bay, Seto Inland Sea, and Kii Channel showed the opposite tendency. The real-time river discharge not only changed the modeled coastal salinity distribution, but also the coastal and offshore currents. Operational ocean nowcast/forecast systems require real-time sampling of oceanic data for representing realistic oceanic conditions. Satellite altimetry plays a key role in detecting mesoscale variability of the ocean currents. The 10-day sampling period and horizontal gaps between the altimetry tracks of 100 km cause difficulties in capturing shorter-term/smaller-scale ocean current variations. Operational systems based on a three-dimensional variational method (3dVar) do not take into account temporal variability of the data within data assimilation time windows. Four-dimensional data assimilation technique is considered as a possible tool for more efficient utilization of the observations arriving from satellite altimeters by the dynamically constrained interpolation. In this study, we develop and test the performance of the adjoint-free four-dimensional variational method (a4dVar) for operational use in regional models. Numerical experiments targeting the Kuroshio path variations south of Japan demonstrate that the a4dVar scheme dynamically corrects the initial condition so as to effectively reduce the satellite altimetry data misfit during a 9-day time window. The corrected initial condition further contributes to improvements in the skill of reconstruction of the Kuroshio path variation in a 30-day lead hindcast run. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present optoelectronic properties of liquid phase crystallised silicon (LPC Si) thin-film solar cells on abrade-textured glass. On the textured glass-Si interface, LPC Si film exhibits a large broadband absorption enhancement, compared to a planar reference. However, LPC Si solar cells on the textured glass demonstrate a significant electrical degradation. External quantum efficiency (EQE) for the cell on the textured glass is lower throughout the 300-1100 nm wavelength region, compared to the planar reference. Open-circuit voltage (V) and short-circuit current density (J) for the cells on the textured glass also show lower performance. This is believed to be due to higher effective area of poorly-passivated glass-Si interface, lower bulk carrier diffusion length in the absorber material and shunting through cracks and pinholes in the LPC films on the textured glass. A multi-scale three-dimensional variational (MS-3DVAR) scheme is developed to assimilate high-resolution Himawari-8 sea surface temperature (SST) data for the first time into an operational ocean nowcast/forecast system targeting the North Western Pacific, JCOPE2. MS-3DVAR improves representation of the Kuroshio path south of Japan, its associated sea level variations, and temperature/salinity profiles south of Japan, the Kuroshio/Oyashio mixed water region, and the Japan Sea as compared to those of the products by the traditional single-scale 3DVAR. Validation results demonstrate that MS-3DVAR well assimilates the sparsely distributed in situ temperature and salinity profiles data by spreading the information over the large scale and by representing the detailed information near the measurement points. MS-3DVAR succeeds to assimilate the Himawari-8 SST product without noisy features caused by the cloud effects. We also find that MS-3DVAR is more effective for estimating oceanic conditions in regions with smaller mesoscale variability including the mixed water region and Japan Sea than in south of Japan. The Great East Japan Earthquake on 11 March 2011, followed by the tsunami and fire, resulted in serious environmental problems in and around Japan. A huge amount of material was discharged into the ocean after the tremendous flood damage of the tsunami. A monitoring survey of the perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs) found evidence showing an abrupt increase in the PFA concentration in the ocean east of Japan in 2011 after the earthquake. To confirm the anomalous input of two typical PFAs, perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), from the Japanese coast into the ocean, associated with the earthquake, we conducted a series of chemical tracer simulations using an eddy-resolving ocean reanalysis product: JCOPE2. The simulation model involves processes representing the emission of PFAs from the land triggered by the tsunami flood, advection of the polluted waters, and decay of the concentration by the background oceanic turbulence. Comparison of the PFOA simulation results with the observation confirms a spike-like input of PFOA into the Western North Pacific after the earthquake. Advection and diffusion by the Kuroshio Extension and the mesoscale eddies play a key role in the dilution of the concentration. Optimization of unknown simulation parameters leads to an estimation of the total amount of the anomalous PFOA emission. In contrast, the PFOS simulations are not able to explain the observed distribution, suggesting possible differences in the oceanic transport processes between PFOS and PFOA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface plasmonic-enhanced light trapping from metal nanoparticles is a promising way of increasing the light absorption in the active silicon layer and, therefore, the photocurrent of the silicon solar cells. In this paper, we applied silver nanoparticles on the rear side of polycrystalline silicon thin film solar cell and systematically studied the dielectric environment effect on the absorption and short-circuit current density (Jsc) of the device. Three different dielectric layers, magnesium fluoride (MgF, n = 1.4), tantalum pentoxide (TaO, n = 2.2), and titanium dioxide (TiO, n = 2.6), were investigated. Experimentally, we found that higher refractive index dielectric coatings results in a redshift of the main plasmonic extinction peak and higher modes were excited within the spectral region that is of interest in our thin film solar cell application. The optical characterization shows that nanoparticles coated with highest refractive index dielectric TiO provides highest absorption enhancement 75.6 %; however, from the external quantum efficiency characterization, highest short-circuit current density Jsc enhancement of 45.8 % was achieved by coating the nanoparticles with lower refractive index MgF. We also further optimize the thickness of MgF and a final 50.2 % Jsc enhancement was achieved with a 210-nm MgF coating and a back reflector. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Excitation of surface plasmons in metallic nanoparticles is a promising method for increasing the light absorption in solar cells and hence the cell photocurrent. Comprehensive optimization of a nanoparticle fabrication process for enhanced performance of polycrystalline silicon thin-film solar cells is presented. Three factors were studied: the Ag precursor film thickness, annealing temperature and time. The thickness of the precursor film was 10, 14 and 20 nm; annealing temperature was 190, 200, 230 and 260 °C; and annealing time was varied between 20 and 95 min. Performance enhancement due to light-scattering by nanoparticles was calculated by comparing absorption, short-circuit current density and energy conversion efficiency in solar cells with and without nanoparticles formed under different process conditions. Nanoparticles formed from 14-nm-thick Ag precursor film annealed at 230 °C for 53 min result in the highest absorption enhancement in the 700-1,100 nm wavelength range, in the highest enhancement of total short-circuit current density. The highest photocurrent enhancement was 33.5 %, which was achieved by the cell with the highest absorption enhancement in the 700-1,100 nm range. The plasmonic cell efficiency of 5.32 % was achieved without a back reflector and 5.95 % with the back reflector; which is the highest reported efficiency for plasmonic thin-film solar cells. We investigated the feasibility of the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) to reproduce oceanic conditions south of Japan. We have adopted the local ensemble transformation Kalman filter algorithm based on 20 members' ensemble simulations of the parallelized Princeton Ocean Model (the Stony Brook Parallel Ocean Model) with horizontal resolution of 1/36°. By assimilating satellite sea surface height anomaly, satellite sea surface temperature, and in situ temperature and salinity profiles, we reproduced the Kuroshio variation south of Japan for the period from 8 to 28 February 2010. EnKF successfully reproduced the Kuroshio path positions and the water mass property of the Kuroshio waters as observed. It also detected the variation of the steep thermohaline front in the Kii Channel due to the intrusion of the Kuroshio water based on the observation, suggesting efficiency of EnKF for detection of open and coastal seas interactions with highly complicated spatiotemporal variability. A simulation of the movement of spilled oil after the incident of the Russian tanker Nakhodka in the Sea of Japan, in January 1997, was performed by a particle tracking model incorporating advection by currents, random diffusion, the buoyancy effect, the parameterization of oil evaporation, biodegradation, and beaching. The currents advecting spilled oil were defined by surface wind drift superposed on the three-dimensional ocean currents obtained by the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory modular ocean model (GFDL MOM), which was forced by the climatological monthly mean meteorological data, or by the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) daily meteorological data, and assimilated sea surface topography detected by satellite altimeter. A number of experiments with different parameters and situations showed that the wide geographical spread of oil observed is not explained by wind drift alone, and that including the simulated climatological currents gives better results. The combination of surface wind drift and daily ocean currents shows the best agreement between the model and observations except in some coastal areas. The daily meteorological effect on the ocean circulation model results in a stronger variability of currents that closely simulates some features of the nonlinear large-scale horizontal turbulent diffusion of oil. Western boundary currents in the subtropics play a pivotal role in transporting warm water from the tropics that contribute to development of highly diverse marine ecosystem in the coastal regions. As one of the western boundary currents in the North Pacific, the Kuroshio Current (hereafter the Kuroshio) exerts great influences on biological resource variability off southwest Japan, but few studies have examined physical processes that attribute the coastal fish resource variability to the basin-scale Kuroshio variability. Using the high-quality fish catch data and high-resolution ocean reanalysis results, this study identifies statistical links of interannual fish resource variability off Sukumo Bay, Shikoku island of Japan, to subsurface ocean temperature variability in the Kuroshio. The subsurface ocean temperature variability off the south of Sukumo Bay exhibits vertically coherent structure with sea-surface height variability, which originates from the westward-propagating oceanic Rossby waves generated through surface wind anomalies in the Northwest Pacific. Although potential sources of the atmospheric variability remain unclarified, the remotely-induced oceanic Rossby waves contribute to fish resource variability off Sukumo Bay. These findings have potential applications to other coastal regions along the western boundary currents in the subtropics where the westward-propagating oceanic Rossby waves may contribute to coastal ocean temperature variability.
