The self-healing cement used in oil wells aims to provide long-term interlayer isolation by enabling the cement system to repair itself. This paper compared the absorption properties of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propanesulfonic acid (AMPS)-based superabsorbent polymer (SAP) and acrylic acid (AA)-based SAP in water and cement slurry filtrate. The effect of cement slurry filtrate on the water absorption properties of the two SAPs was evaluated. The results showed that the calcium ions in the cement slurry would crosslink with the carboxyl groups in the AA-SAP, increasing the crosslink density and greatly reducing its absorption rate in water. Compared to AA-SAP, AMPS-SAP is more suitable for oil well cement slurries. AMPS-SAP can help reduce the fluid loss of cement slurry. The addition of 0.4% AMPS-SAP in cement slurry results in a 64 mL decrease in fluid loss. Increasing evidence indicate that the expression of defense genes at the right place and the right time are regulated by host-defense transcription factors. However, the precise mechanisms of this regulation are not well understood. Homeodomain transcription factors, encoded by homeobox genes, play crucial role for the development of multicellular eukaryotes. In this study, we demonstrated that homeodomain transcription factor CEH-37 (known as OTX2 in mammals) was a key transcription factor for host defense in Caenorhabditis elegans. Meanwhile, CEH-37 acted in the intestine to protect C. elegans against pathogen infection. We further showed that the homeodomain transcription factor CEH-37 positively regulated PMK-1/ p38 MAPK activity to promote the intestinal immunity via suppression phosphatase VHP-1. Furthermore, we demonstrated that this function was conserved, because the human homeodomain transcription factor OTX2 also exhibited protective function in lung epithelial cells during Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. Thus, our work reveal that CEH-37/OTX2 is a evolutionarily conserved transcription factor for defense against pathogen infection. The finding provides a model in which CEH-37 decreases VHP-1 phosphatase activity, allowing increased stimulation of PMK-1/p38 MAPK phosphorylation cascade in the intestine for pathogen resistance. Contamination of leafy vegetables grown in heavy metal(loid)-polluted mining areas pose serious health risks. This study aimed to explore the heavy metal(loid) contamination of leafy vegetables near two mining areas, by collecting samples from 14 different leafy vegetable species in Yunnan Province, China. The lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and copper (Cu) contents of the samples were determined, and risks to human health were calculated using the hazard quotient and hazard index (HI). Moreover, Malabar spinach was identified as a leafy vegetable that exhibits low accumulation of heavy metal(loid)s. The accumulation capacity of different Malabar spinach varieties was verified, and a Cd soil safety threshold was determined using a pot experiment. Overall, Pb and Cd were the main soil and vegetable contaminants found in both study sites. The HI values for all leafy vegetables, apart from Malabar spinach, were greater than 1, indicating the presence of risks to human health; moreover, the health risks were greater for children than adults. The Malabar spinach pot experiment results showed that only some Cd forms exceeded China's maximum permissible standards. Furthermore, Malabar spinach varieties A (instant Malabar spinach), C (extra-large leaf green vine Malabar spinach), and F (large leaf Malabar spinach) displayed the lowest Cd accumulation. We calculated Cd total and bioavailable soil safety thresholds of 4.75 and 0.77 mg kg-1, respectively. However, further research is required to validate soil heavy metal safety thresholds for different vegetables. Ultimately, the heavy metal(loid) contamination of leafy vegetables described here was more serious than anticipated. Finally, the results of this study can inform residents living near these mining areas of a low-risk leafy vegetable, which will reduce the harm caused by heavy metal(loid) contamination in the area. Bacteria play a vital role in ecological processes of soil contaminated by heavy metals. Here, soil sampling was carried out around a tailings pile contaminated to different degrees by cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and arsenic (As). The bacteria in the soil were cultured, separated and purified on Luria–Bertani medium, and the changes in bacterial communities in soils with different pollution levels were analysed with 16S rRNA sequencing. Bacillus pacificus strain MZ520364 was found to be highly tolerant to Cd, Pb and As, and single-metal and multimetal tolerance experiments were further conducted with this strain. The results obtained from alpha diversity and operational taxonomic unit (OTU) statistical analyses showed a significant difference in bacterial composition among soils with different metal pollution levels, and the highest bacterial diversity was found at the most severely polluted site. Evidence from variance partitioning analysis (VPA) and the Spearman correlation heatmap analysis showed that the leading factors affecting bacterial community composition were cation exchange content (CEC), pH, total Zn, total As, and available As concentrations in soil. Additionally, in the single-metal treatments, B. pacificus MZ520364 could tolerate 600 mg/L Cd2+, 1000 mg/L Pb2+ or 700 mg/L As3+. When Cd, Pb and As coexisted, the best growth of B. pacificus MZ520364 was present at 120 mg/L Cd2+, 200 mg/L Pb2+ and 150 mg/L As3+. The effect of Cd, Pb and As on the growth of the strain followed the order of Cd > As > Pb, and the heavy metal combination showed more toxicity than single metals. In summary, our results revealed the ecological impact of soil physicochemical properties on the diversity and richness of soil bacterial communities and suggested that B. pacificus MZ520364 may be used for the remediation of Cd–Pb–As co-contaminated soil. Ferrochromium (FeCr) slag-based glass–ceramic was successfully prepared in laboratory, and subsequently tested by different kinds of leaching experiment. Firstly, the ordinary toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) test, and long-term leaching experiment (140 days) were carried out, and lastly, the samples were tested under different extreme application conditions, which are, high-speed stirring (high mechanical strength), and strong alkali or acid environment, to obtain the condition that the leaching concentration of the chromium (Cr) in the samples exceeds its standard. The result shows that the concentration of Cr increases with the increase of the stirring speed, and when the stirring speed reaches 2000 rpm, the Cr concentration reaches its maximum of 0.396 mg/L. When the pH value changes from 0 to 14, the Cr concentration decreases sharply in the beginning, then increases slightly, and the maximum of the concentration is 0.413 mg/L. The results indicated that, whether under the ordinary TCLP test or the extreme leaching conditions, the leaching concentrations of Cr in the glass–ceramic are all far below the international standard for solid toxic leaching concentration of Cr, and the glass–ceramic completely meets the requirements of daily and extreme practical application. Finally, the FeCr slag-based glass–ceramic with different colors were designed and adopted in different area of city, which shows a great application of it in the urban construction. To study the final equilibrium state and process of CO2 injecting into the Fe–C melt with different initial carbon contents, a model was established based on the method of minimization of Gibbs free energy and the corresponding experiments were carried out in a high-temperature tube furnace. When CO2 is continuously injected into the Fe–C melt at 1873 K, the final equilibrium state of the system is such that the carbon and oxygen contents in the melt are 0.1977 and 0.0115 wt pct, respectively, and the volume ratio of CO in the gas phase is 85.75 vol pct. When the initial a[O] × a[C] in the melt is greater than those in equilibrium with CO under 0.8575 atm, the CO2 gas removes carbon from the melt. On the contrary, the role of CO2 gas is to add carbon and oxygen to the melt. At the same time, the variation of carbon and oxygen with time obtained by experiments was different from the theoretical calculation at extremely low carbon content, which requires further study. To find maize varieties with both safe production and soil remediation, 11 maize varieties were planted in field soil which was combinedly polluted by cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and lead (Pb). The plant growth, accumulation, phytochemical forms, and translocation of Cd, As, and Pb in different tissues were examined. Furthermore, maize varieties with low metal accumulation in their edible parts but high accumulation in other parts were selected as remediation candidates and pollution-safe varieties. The results showed that the growth of varieties Yayu69, Longhuang2502, and Shennongyu10 were the least affected by heavy metals. The concentrations of Cd, As, and Pb in all of the tested maize grains met the national feed hygiene standards, and the grain concentrations of the three metals in Yayu69, Shengnongyu10, and Yunrui62 all met the national food safety standards. According to the extraction efficiency of Cd, As, and Pb and heavy metal concentrations in grains, four types of maize were classified as follows: (1) the first category was suitable for both soil remediation and safe production, including the varieties Yayu69 (Cd, Pb), Jinyi418 (As, Cd), and Shengnongyu10 (Pb); (2) the second category had a high concentration of metals in edible part but did not exceed the limiting value in national feed hygiene standards, and the metal extraction efficiency was also high, including Beiyu1521 (Cd) and Longhuang2502 (Cd, As, Pb); (3) the third category included heavy metal exclusion varieties with low metals accumulation, such as Yayu749 (Cd), Yunrui62 (As, Pb), and Yunrui8 (As); and (4) the fourth type covered risk maize varieties with food safety risks and unsuitable cultivation at sites polluted with toxic metals, including Chuangui1586 (Pb) and Enyu69 (As). The variety Yayu69 (a Cd/Pb low accumulator in grain) contained a low percentage of inorganic (FE) and water-soluble (FW) Cd (4%) and Pb (6%) in roots, respectively, but the percentage of FE and FW Cd and Pb in the variety Beiyu1521 (a Cd/Pb high accumulator in grain) was up to 29% and 13%. Our results provided a new perspective in applying maize varieties with different metal-accumulating ability in their different parts to achieve the remediation of metal-polluted soil and the sustainable development of agricultural production. Mirabilis jalapa L. was identified as a cadmium (Cd) hyperaccumulator, but data were mainly from laboratory conditions. The main aim of the present study was to confirm whether M. jalapa is a Cd hyperaccumulator by field survey and laboratory experiment. The field survey was conducted at 3 sites and 66 samples were collected, and the results showed that although M. jalapa did not exhibit any visible damage when growing on soil containing 139 mg Cd kg−1, a low concentration of Cd (11.85 ± 3.45 mg kg−1) in its leaves was observed. Although the translocation factor (TF) was up to 3.24 ± 0.42, the bioconcentration factor (BCF) was only 0.13 ± 0.07. The Cd accumulation in leaves of Lanping (LP, contaminated site) and Kunming (KM, clean site) populations reached 93.88 and 81.76 mg kg−1 when artificially spiked soil Cd was 175 mg kg−1, respectively. The BCFs of LP and KM populations were 0.55 and 0.48, and the TFs of the two populations were 3.98 and 4.15, respectively. Under hydroponic condition, the Cd concentration in young leaves of LP and KM populations was 78.5 ± 0.8 and 46.3 ± 1.2 mg kg−1 at 5 mg L−1 Cd treatment, respectively. Furthermore, a significantly positive correlation between tissue Cd concentration and total Cd, CaCl2-extractable Cd, and TCLP-Cd (toxicity characteristic leaching procedure) in soil was established. A field survey was conducted to evaluate soil metal pollution and endogenous trans-zeatin content in the leaves of plants growing at six sites in a metal-polluted area located in Gejiu, Yunnan, China. Five plant species were collected, and the physicochemical properties and concentrations of five metals in the soil were analyzed. The trans-zeatin content in plant leaves was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. Based on the Nemerow pollution index, the six sites were classified into four levels of pollution (i.e., low, medium, high, and severely high). The degree of soil metal pollution was cadmium (Cd) > arsenic (As) > lead (Pb) > zinc (Zn) > copper (Cu). The leaf trans-zeatin content in Pteris vittata (an arsenic hyperaccumulator) increased significantly by 98.6 % in soil with a severely high level of pollution compared with soil at a low level of pollution. However, in non-hyperaccumulators Bidens pilosa var . radiata and Ageratina adenophora, a significant decrease in leaf trans-zeatin content of 35.6 and 87.6 %, respectively, was observed. The leaf trans-zeatin content in Artemisia argyi also decreased significantly by 73.6 % in high metal-polluted soil compared with that in medium metal-polluted soil. Furthermore, significant correlations were observed between leaf trans-zeatin content in Pteris vittata and As, Pb, and Cd concentrations in the soil; however, either no correlation or a negative one was observed in the other plant species. Metastasis-associated gene 1 ( MTA1) controls a series of biological processes in tumor progression. Tumor progression is a complex process regulated by a gene network. The global cancer gene regulatory network must be analyzed to determine the position of MTA1 in the molecular network and its cooperative genes by further exploring the biological functions of this gene. We used TCGA data sets and GeneCards database to screen MTA1-related genes. GO and KEGG pathway analyses were conducted with DAVID and gene network analysis via STRING and Cytoscape. Results showed that in the development of colon cancer, MTA1 is linked to certain signal pathways, such as Wnt/Notch/nucleotide excision repair pathways. The findings also suggested that MTA1 demonstrates the closest relationship in a coregulation process with the key molecules AKT1, EP300, CREBBP, SMARCA4, RHOA, and CAD. As the most common NK/T-cell lymphoma in Asian countries, extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKTL), has unique clinical features and a strong association with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). In order to gain a preliminary understanding of the relationship between ENKTL and EBV, we performed genotypic analysis of EBV and investigated LMP1 expression in extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma. Our study shows that ENKTL is an EBV-associated malignancy and that A, C and F are the predominant EBV genotypes in northern China. LMP1 expression is stronger in extranasal sites than nasal sites, and the expression level is strongly correlated to ENKTL and may play an important role in the development of ENKTL. The subcellular localization of a protein is closely linked to and indicates its function. The metastatic tumor antigen (MTA) family has been under continuous investigation since its identification two decades ago. MTA1, MTA2, and MTA3 are the main members of the MTA family. MTA1, as the representative member of this family, has been shown to be widely expressed in both embryonic and adult tissues, as well as in normal and cancerous conditions, indicating that MTA1 has functions both in physiological and pathological contexts. MTA1 is expressed at a higher level in most cancers than in their normal tissue counterparts. Even in normal cells, MTA1 levels vary a great deal from tissue to tissue. Importantly, MTA1 shows a multiple localization pattern in the cell, as do MTA2 and MTA3. Different MTA components in different subcellular compartments may exert different molecular functions in the cell. Previous studies revealed that MTA1 and MTA2 are predominately localized to the nucleus, while MTA3 is observed in both the nucleus and cytoplasm. Recent studies have reported that MTA1 is located in the nucleus, cytoplasm, and the nuclear envelope. In the nucleus, MTA1 dynamically interacts with chromatin in a MTA1-K532 methylation-dependent manner, whereas cytoplasmic MTA1 binds to the microtubule skeleton. MTA1 also shows a dynamic distribution during the cell cycle. Further investigations are needed to identify the exact subcellular localizations of MTA proteins. A field survey was conducted to investigate the present situation and health risk of arsenic (As), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) in soils and vegetables in a multi-metal mining area, Gejiu, China. Furthermore, three vegetables (water spinach, potato, and summer squash) containing high metal concentrations were selected to further analyze metal speciation. The results showed that the average concentrations of five metals in soil exceeded the limiting values, and their bioavailable concentrations were significantly positively correlated to the total ones. Heavy metals in the edible parts of vegetables also exceeded the corresponding standards. The leaves of pakchoi, peppermint, and coriander had a strong metal-accumulative ability and they were not suitable for planting. Except the residue forms, the main forms of metals in the edible parts of three selected vegetables were ethanol-, NaCl-, and HAc-extractable fractions for As, Pb, and Cd, respectively; however, Cu was mainly presented as NaCl-extractable and Zn as HAc-extractable fractions. A high proportion of ethanol-extractable As showed that As bioactivity and toxic effects were the highest. Although the total and bioavailable Cd were high in soil, its speciation in vegetables was mainly presented as HAc-extractable fraction, which has a relatively low bioactivity. A method was developed for the determination of cadmium(II) by ligand-less solid phase extraction that is based on the direct retention of Cd(II) in a mini-column filled with a silica gel modified with an amino-functionalized ionic liquid. The effects of pH, sample volume and its flow rate, eluent concentration and its volume, the flow rate of eluent, and of potential interferences on extraction and desorption were optimized. Following its determination by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry, the detection limit for Cd(II) is 8.9 ng L, and the relative standard deviation is 2.3 % (at 1.0 ng mL; for n = 5). In the current work, oxidation kinetics of Fe-Cr and Fe-Cr-C melts by gas mixtures containing CO was investigated by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). The experiments were conducted keeping the melt in alumina crucibles, allowing the alloy melt to get oxidized by an oxidant gas. The oxidation rate was followed by the weight changes as a function of time. The oxidation experiments were conducted using various mixtures of O and CO with $$ P_{{{\text{O}}_{2} }} $$ = 10 to 10Pa. In order to understand the mechanism of oxidation, the wetting properties between the alumina container and the alloys used in the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) experiments and the change of the alloy drop shape during the course of the oxidation were investigated by X-ray radiography.The experiments demonstrated that the oxidation rate of Fe-Cr melt increased slightly with temperature under the current experimental conditions, but it is strongly related to the Cr-content of the alloy as well as the oxygen partial pressure in the oxidant gas mixture, both of which caused an increase in the rate. For the Fe-Cr-C system, the oxidation rate has a negative relationship with carbon content, viz. with increasing carbon, the oxidation rate of the alloy melt slightly decreased. The chemical reaction was found to be the rate determining step during the initial stages, whereas as the reaction progressed, the diffusion of oxygen ions through slag phase to the slag-melt interface was found to have a strong impact on the oxidation rate. Lead exposure in children has received increasing attention from scientists and public health institutions worldwide. Deficiencies of nutritional essential metals can increase the hazard from lead exposure by enhancing absorption and toxicity of dietary lead. Lead, as a ubiquitous toxicity metal, may interact metabolically with nutritional essential metals. A large population-based study was conducted to investigate blood lead, calcium, iron, zinc and hemoglobin levels in healthy children aged 0-7 years. Based on the records, 158 (3.57 %) of 4,429 children had a blood lead levels (BLLs) ≥10 μg/dl, and 1,324 (30.30 %) children had a BLL ≥7 μg/dl. BLLs in children aged less than 3 years was lower than those in older children. BLLs had a negative correlation with blood calcium and iron level ( r = −0.357 and r = −0.070, P < 0.01). Multiple logistic regression analysis also showed that BLLs had a negative correlation with blood calcium and iron. BLLs can be influenced by the status of some essential trace metals in children. Supplement of nutritional elements may help reduce lead absorption. Children with elevated BLLs (≥10 μg/dl) were controlled well in recent years in Chengdu. Lead is a toxic element. It can damage multiple human organs and systems. In present study, we detected the blood lead levels (BLLs) during the whole pregnancy period and 6-12th weeks after delivery and analyzed their influencing factors by healthy pregnant women. We recruited 128 healthy pregnant women absent of pregnancy or obstetric complications or abnormal pregnancy outcomes as the gravida group. The control group consisted of 120 healthy non-pregnant women. The lead concentrations of all the three pregnancy trimesters and postpartum were: 5.95 ± 2.27, 5.51 ± 1.93, 5.57 ± 1.85, and 6.88 ± 1.90 μg/dl; and the mean lead concentration of control group was 6.87 ± 2.29 μg/dl. We found that the BLLs of the gravida group were lower than that of control group during all three trimesters and occupations, supplement nutrition elements, and time of house painted could affect blood lead levels of pregnant women. Lead-related occupations, using cosmetics, and living in a house painted <1 year are risk factors of high BLLs among pregnant women, while calcium, iron, zinc, and milk supplements are protective factors. These may help people especially pregnant women to reduce lead exposure via supplement of calcium, iron, zinc, and milk or avoiding contacting above risk factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nickel oxide (NiO) hollow fibers were obtained by thermal degradation of nickel alginate fibers (Ni-AF), which was prepared by wet spinning technique. The composition, morphology and microstructure of the as-obtained NiO fibers were investigated by thermal gravimetry (TG), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It is found that temperature plays important roles on the final structures and shapes of the NiO nanostructures. NiO hollow fibers (∼ 10 μm) consisting of NiO nanoparticles with diameter about 50 and 80 nm respectively are obtained under 600 and 800 °C in air. Zinc alginate fibers (Zn-AF) were obtained by wet-spinning of sodium alginate into coagulating bath containing an aqueous zinc chloride solution. ZnO nanostructures consisting of nanofibers on the ZnO matrix were prepared from controlled thermal degradation of the as-obtained Zn-AF at 800 °C in air condition when Zn granules were added for extra ZnO source during calcination. The composition and morphology of ZnO nanostructures were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoluminescence (PL). The SEM images show that ZnO nanofibers with diameter about 20 nm were formed on the ZnO matrix. The photocatalytic degradation experiment of methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous solution show that ZnO nanostructures possess good photo catalytic reactivity. Dysregulated alternative splicing (AS) driving carcinogenetic mitosis remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that cancer metastasis-associated antigen 1 (MTA1), a well-known oncogenic chromatin modifier, broadly interacts and co-expresses with RBPs across cancers, contributing to cancerous mitosis-related AS. Using developed fCLIP-seq technology, we show that MTA1 binds abundant transcripts, preferentially at splicing-responsible motifs, influencing the abundance and AS pattern of target transcripts. MTA1 regulates the mRNA level and guides the AS of a series of mitosis regulators. MTA1 deletion abrogated the dynamic AS switches of variants for ATRX and MYBL2 at mitotic stage, which are relevant to mitosis-related tumorigenesis. MTA1 dysfunction causes defective mitotic arrest, leads to aberrant chromosome segregation, and results in chromosomal instability (CIN), eventually contributing to tumorigenesis. Currently, little is known about the RNA splicing during mitosis; here, we uncover that MTA1 binds transcripts and orchestrates dynamic splicing of mitosis regulators in tumorigenesis.
