As ethnic medicine, the whole grass of plants in Cirsium was used as antimicrobial. This review focuses on the antimicrobial activity of plants in Cirsium, including antimicrobial components, against different types of microbes and bacteriostatic mechanism. The results showed that the main antimicrobial activity components in Cirsium plants were flavonoids, triterpenoids and phenolic acids, and the antimicrobial ability varied according to the species and the content of chemicals. Among them, phenolic acids showed a strong antibacterial ability against Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterococcus faecium. The antibacterial mechanisms include: (1) damaging the cell membrane, cell walls, mitochondria and nucleus of bacteria; (2) inhibiting the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids; (3) suppressing the synthesis of enzymes for tricarboxylic acid cycle pathways and glycolysis, and then killing the bacteria via inhibition of energy production. Totally, most research results on antimicrobial activity of Cirsium plants are reported based on in vitro assays. The evidence from clinical data and comprehensive evaluation are needed. Swift and precise classification of rock masses significantly enhances the prudent and efficient advancement of rock mass engineering. To expeditiously and accurately determine the engineering classification of slope rock masses, this paper introduces a hybrid Data Comprehensive Weight Analysis (DCWA)-Equilibrium Optimizer (EO)-AdaBoost ensemble prediction model. This model is formulated to prognosticate revised Basic Quality value ([BQ]) and the engineering classification of slope rock masses, utilizing the Basic Quality (BQ) classification method. Six elements have been chosen to formulate the prognostic index, and a dataset comprising information on the slope rock mass of 266 groups has been assembled for the purpose of training and evaluating the predictive accuracy of the established model. Two slope sections in DEZIWA open pit mine is chosen to validate the correctness of established DCWA-EO-AdaBoost model in the field through numerical simulation. In comparison to AdaBoost, DCWA-AdaBoost, DCWA-EO-AdaBoost, K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Back Propagation (BP), Decision Tree (DT), and Random Forest (RF) models, it is discerned that the DCWA-EO-AdaBoost hybrid model exhibits elevated coefficient of determination (R2, 0.986), variance accounted for (VA, 98.64%), prediction accuracy (A, 92.31%), and kappa coefficient (KC, 88.87%). Conversely, the mean absolute error (E, 5.97%) and root mean square error (ER, 38.37) are diminished, affirming its reliability and superiority. Field validation reveals that, combine the DCWA-EO-AdaBoost model and BQ classification method, mechanical parameters used for slope stability analysis can be obtained accurately, and can obtains slope stability analysis results basically consistent with the engineering practice through numerical simulation, which can prove the correctness of the established prediction model and clarify the use of the established model in the process of slope stability analysis. This attests that the established predictive model holds substantial merit, offering a noteworthy reference for the expeditious and precise acquisition of [BQ] and the classification of slope rock mass based on the BQ method, and can be adopted in the process of slope stability analysis. The proximal generalized alternating direction method of multipliers (p-GADMM) is substantially efficient for solving convex composite programming problems of high-dimensional to moderate accuracy. The global convergence of this method was established by Xiao et al. (Math Program Comput 10(4):533–555, 2018), but its convergence rate was not given. One may take it for granted that the convergence rate could be proved easily by mimicking the proximal ADMM, but we find the relaxed points will certainly cause many difficulties for theoretical analysis. In this paper, we devote to exploring its convergence behavior and show that the sequence generated by p-GADMM possesses Q-linear convergence rate under some technical conditions. We would like to note that the proximal parameters at the subproblems are required to be positive definite, which is common in most practical implementations although it seems to be a bit strong. Purpose of Review: The purpose of this review is to provide an updated approach to the evaluation and management of pulsatile tinnitus (PT), an uncommon but often treatable subtype of tinnitus. Recent Findings: Secondary PT can be due to either vascular or non-vascular etiologies, including, but not limited to: neoplasm, arteriovenous malformation or fistula, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, dural venous sinus stenosis, otoacoustic etiologies (e.g., otosclerosis, patulous eustachian tube) and bony defects (e.g., superior semicircular canal dehiscence). Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) imaging have comparable diagnostic yield, though each may be more sensitive to specific etiologies. If initial vascular imaging is negative and a vascular etiology is strongly suspected, digital subtraction angiography (DSA) may further aid in the diagnosis. Many vascular etiologies of PT can be managed endovascularly, often leading to PT improvement or resolution. Notably, venous sinus stenting is an emerging therapy for PT secondary to idiopathic intracranial hypertension with venous sinus stenosis. Summary: Careful history and physical exam can help establish the differential diagnosis for PT and guide subsequent evaluation and management. Cognitive functions, including attention and working memory, have been recognized to be associated with tone processing. However, it remains unclear how these cognitive functions might modulate the process of tone merging. In Macau Cantonese, three pairs of tones are currently undergoing or have completed merging, exhibiting different rates and ranges of merging within the speech community, providing a valuable opportunity to investigate this issue. Through a perception task, a production task, and a series of cognitive function tasks, we examined differences in cognitive performances among individuals distinguishing different tone pairs and explored the correlations between various indices of tone processing and cognitive functions. The results revealed that the completed merging of the T2–T5 pair showed no significant correlation with cognitive functions in perception and production. The T3–T6 pair, with an intermediate merging speed, exhibited a significant positive correlation between cognitive functions and both their perception and production. In contrast, the T4–T6 pair, characterized by a slower merging speed, showed a correlation only in the perception modality. Our findings suggested that cognitive functions affect tones at different stages of the merging process, influencing their perception and production in distinct ways. Adiponectin has previously been investigated for exerting its protective effect against myocardial injury through anti-apoptotic and anti-oxidative actions. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the nature and mechanism of adiponectin inhibition of H2O2-induced apoptosis in chicken skeletal myoblasts. Skeletal muscle satellite cells were differentiated and assigned into three groups. Group C was on the blank control group, group H was stimulated with the H2O2 (500 μmol/L, 4 h) alone group, group A + H was pre-treated with adiponectin (10 μg/mL, 24 h) and stimulated with the H2O2 (500 μmol/L, 4 h) group. Cytotoxicity inhibited by adiponectin was evaluated by the CCK-8 assay. The degree of apoptosis and oxidative damage was investigated by the TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) staining assays. Oxidative stress was assessed by evaluating lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase, and reduced glutathione. Acridine orange (AO) staining detected lysosomal membrane permeability. The changes in mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were analyzed using 5,5,6,6′-tetrachloro-1,1,3,3-tetraethylimidacarbocyanine iodide (JC-1) dye under a fluorescence microscope. The lysosomal function, mitochondrial function, and apoptosis-related mRNA and protein expression levels were quantified by real-time quantitative PCR and western blot, respectively. The results suggested that adiponectin treatment attenuated H2O2-induced cytotoxicity and oxidative stress in skeletal myoblasts. Compared with H2O2 treatment, TUNEL and ROS staining demonstrated lower apoptosis upon adiponectin treatment. AO staining confirmed the amelioration of lysosomal membrane damage, and JC-1 staining revealed an increase in mitochondrial membrane potential after adiponectin treatment. At the molecular level, adiponectin treatment inhibited the expression of the lysosomal apoptotic factors cathepsin B, chymotrypsin B, and the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway cytochrome-c (cyt-c) and caspase-8; decreased the apoptotic marker gene Bax; and increased the expression of the anti-apoptotic marker gene Bcl-2. Aiming at the complex background of transmission lines at the present stage, which leads to the problem of low accuracy of insulator fault detection for small targets, a deep learning-based insulator fault detection algorithm for transmission lines is proposed. First, aerial images of insulators are collected using UAVs in different scenarios to establish insulator fault datasets. After that, in order to improve the detection efficiency of the target detection algorithm, certain improvements are made on the basis of the YOLOV9 algorithm. The improved algorithm enhances the feature extraction capability of the algorithm for insulator faults at a smaller computational cost by adding the GAM attention mechanism; at the same time, in order to realize the detection efficiency of small targets for insulator faults, the generalized efficient layer aggregation network (GELAN) module is improved and a new SC-GELAN module is proposed; the original loss function is replaced by the effective intersection-over-union (EIOU) loss function to minimize the difference between the aspect ratio of the predicted frame and the real frame, thereby accelerating the convergence speed of the model. Finally, the proposed algorithm is trained and tested with other target detection algorithms on the established insulator fault dataset. The experimental results and analysis show that the algorithm in this paper ensures a certain detection speed, while the algorithmic model has a higher detection accuracy, which is more suitable for UAV fault detection of insulators on transmission lines. Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore inflammation of soft tissue around the upper third molar as a prevalent cause of limited mouth opening, identify the clinical and radiographic features, and summarize the therapeutic effectiveness of tooth extraction. Materials and methods: A retrospective analysis of data from 264 patients with limited mouth opening over the last five years was performed. Results: Among the 264 patients, 24 (9.1%) had inflammation of the soft tissue around the upper third molar, which was the second most common cause of limited mouth opening. Twenty-one of the twenty-four affected patients, with an average mouth opening of 19.1 ± 7.6 mm, underwent upper third molar extraction. Gingival tenderness around the upper third molar or maxillary tuberosity mucosa was a characteristic clinical manifestation (p < 0.05). The characteristic features on maxillofacial CT included soft tissue swelling around the upper third molar and gap narrowing between the maxillary nodules and the mandibular ascending branch. Post extraction, the average mouth opening increased to 31.4 ± 4.9 mm (p < 0.05), and follow-up CT demonstrated regression of the inflammatory soft tissue around the upper third molar. Conclusions: Inflammation of soft tissue around the upper third molar is a common cause of limited mouth opening. Symptoms of pain associated with the upper third molar and distinctive findings on enhanced maxillofacial CT scans are crucial for diagnosis. Upper third molar extraction yields favorable therapeutic outcomes. Clinical relevance: Inflammation of the soft tissue around the maxillary third molar commonly causes limited mouth opening, but this phenomenon has long been overlooked. Topological materials confined in 1D can transform computing technologies, such as 1D topological semimetals for nanoscale interconnects and 1D topological superconductors for fault-tolerant quantum computing. As such, understanding crystallization of 1D-confined topological materials is critical. Here, we demonstrate 1D template-assisted nanowire synthesis where we observe diameter-dependent phase selectivity for tungsten phosphides. A phase bifurcation occurs to produce tungsten monophosphide and tungsten diphosphide at the cross-over nanowire diameter regime of 35–70 nm. Four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy is used to identify the two phases and to map crystallographic orientations of grains at a few nm resolution. The 1D-confined phase selectivity is attributed to the minimization of the total surface energy, which depends on the nanowire diameter and chemical potentials of precursors. Theoretical calculations are carried out to construct the diameter-dependent phase diagram, which agrees with experimental observations. Our findings suggest a crystallization route to stabilize topological materials confined in 1D. Topological materials confined in 1D could transform computing technology, but their crystallization is poorly understood. Glioma is the most common malignant tumor in the central nervous system, and its unique pathogenesis often leads to poor treatment outcomes and prognosis. In 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) divided gliomas into five categories based on their histological characteristics and molecular changes. Non-coding RNA is a type of RNA that does not encode proteins but can exert biological functions at the RNA level, and long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) is a type of non-coding RNA with a length exceeding 200 nt. It is controlled by various transcription factors and plays an indispensable role in the regulatory processes in various cells. Numerous studies have confirmed that the dysregulation of lncRNA is critical in the pathogenesis, progression, and malignancy of gliomas. Therefore, this article reviews the proliferation, apoptosis, invasion, migration, angiogenesis, immune regulation, glycolysis, stemness, and drug resistance changes caused by the dysregulation of lncRNA in gliomas, and summarizes their potential clinical significance in gliomas. Purpose: Frailty is common in critically ill patients but the timing and optimal method of frailty ascertainment, trajectory and relationship with care processes remain uncertain. We sought to elucidate the trajectory and care processes of frailty in critically ill patients as measured by the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) and Frailty Index (FI). Methods: This is a multi-centre prospective cohort study enrolling patients ≥ 50 years old receiving life support > 24 h. Frailty severity was assessed with a CFS, and a FI based on the elements of a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) at intensive care unit (ICU) admission, hospital discharge and 6 months. For the primary outcome of frailty prevalence, it was a priori dichotomously defined as a CFS ≥ 5 or FI ≥ 0.2. Processes of care, adverse events were collected during ICU and ward stays while outcomes were determined for ICU, hospital, and 6 months. Results: In 687 patients, whose age (mean ± standard deviation) was 68.8 ± 9.2 years, frailty prevalence was higher when measured with the FI (CFS, FI %): ICU admission (29.8, 44.8), hospital discharge (54.6, 67.9), 6 months (34.1, 42.6). Compared to ICU admission, aggregate frailty severity increased to hospital discharge but improved by 6 months; individually, CFS and FI were higher in 45.3% and 50.6% patients, respectively at 6 months. Compared to hospital discharge, 18.7% (CFS) and 20% (FI) were higher at 6 months. Mortality was higher in frail patients. Processes of care and adverse events were similar except for worse ICU/ward mobility and more frequent delirium in frail patients. Conclusions: Frailty severity was dynamic, can be measured during recovery from critical illness using the CFS and FI which were both associated with worse outcomes. Although the CFS is a global measure, a CGA FI based may have advantages of being able to measure frailty levels, identify deficits, and potential targets for intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Enhancing the mechanical properties and cytocompatibility of decellularized heart valves is the key to promote the application of biological heart valves. In order to further improve the mechanical properties, the electrospinning and non-woven processing methods are combined to prepare the polylactic acid (PLA)/decellularized heart valve nanofiber-reinforced sandwich structure electrospun scaffold. The effect of electrospinning time on the performance of decellularized heart valve is investigated from the aspects of morphology, mechanical properties, softness, and biocompatibility of decellularized heart valve. Results of the mechanical tests show that compared with the pure decellularized heart valve, the mechanical properties of the composite heart valve were significantly improved with the tensile strength increasing by 108% and tensile strain increased by 571% when the electrospinning time exceeded 2 h. In addition, with this electrospinning time, the composite heart valve has a certain promoting effect on the human umbilical vein endothelial cells proliferation behavior. The deep-learning protein structure prediction method AlphaFold2 has garnered enormous attention beyond the realm of structural biology, for its groundbreaking contribution to solving the "protein folding problem". In this perspective, we explore the connection between protein structure studies and environmental research, delving into the potential for addressing specific environmental challenges. Proteins are promising for environmental applications because of the functional diversity endowed by their structural complexity. However, structural studies on proteins with environmental significance remain scarce. Here, we present the opportunity to study proteins by advancing experimental determination and deep-learning prediction methods. Specifically, the latest progress in environmental research via cryogenic electron microscopy is highlighted. It allows us to determine the structure of protein complexes in their native state within cells at molecular resolution, revealing environmentally-associated structural dynamics. With the remarkable advancements in computational power and experimental resolution, the study of protein structure and dynamics has reached unprecedented depth and accuracy. These advancements will undoubtedly accelerate the establishment of comprehensive environmental protein structural and functional databases. Tremendous opportunities for protein engineering exist to enable innovative solutions for environmental applications, such as the degradation of persistent contaminants, and the recovery of valuable metals as well as rare earth elements. A method has been developed to quantify PET and PBT microplastics (MPs) based on depolymerization and detection of depolymerization products by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS) without a complex separation process from environmental samples. Under the optimal depolymerization conditions, PET and PBT were efficiently converted to ethylene glycol (78%) and 1,4-butanediol (87%), respectively. Subsequently, the linear curves were constructed between signal intensities of depolymerization products and polymer masses by GC–MS/MS, and the correlation coefficients of PET and PBT were 0.996 and 0.997, respectively. The spiking and recovery experiments of PET and PBT in the environmental samples showed that the recovery was stable in the range 89–100%, and the limit of detection was 4.95 μg and 1.39 μg of PET and PBT, respectively. The method has been proven to be capable of simultaneous identification and quantification of PBT and PET MPs in real environmental water samples without complex separation process, which provided a scheme for the determination of microplastics. Malachite is a common copper oxide mineral that is often enriched using the sulfidization–xanthate flotation method. Currently, the direct sulfidization method cannot yield copper concentrate products. Therefore, a new sulfidization flotation process was developed to promote the efficient recovery of malachite. In this study, Cu2+ was used as an activator to interact with the sample surface and increase its reaction sites, thereby strengthening the mineral sulfidization process and reactivity. Compared to single copper ion activation, the flotation effect of malachite significantly increased after stepwise Cu2+ activation. Zeta potential, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF–SIMS), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM–EDS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis results indicated that the adsorption of S species was significantly enhanced on the mineral surface due to the increase in active Cu sites after Cu2+ stepwise activation. Meanwhile, the proportion of active Cu–S species also increased, further improving the reaction between the sample surface and subsequent collectors. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and contact angle tests implied that the xanthate species were easily and stably adsorbed onto the mineral surface after Cu2+ stepwise activation, thereby improving the hydrophobicity of the mineral surface. Therefore, the copper sites on the malachite surface after Cu2+ stepwise activation promote the reactivity of the mineral surface and enhance sulfidization flotation of malachite. The ability of indoor plants to purify benzene pollution is the basic basis for the selection of plants for ecological remediation of indoor benzene pollution. In this study, the purification rate and the purification amount per unit leaf area of 13 test plants at three benzene concentrations were determined by indoor fumigation experiments, and the benzene absorption and purification abilityability of indoor plants were comprehensively evaluated. The results showed that (1) there was a significant correlation between benzene concentration and purification rate and purification amount per unit leaf area. (2) At the three concentrations, Spathiphyllum floribundum showed the highest purification rate and Sansevieria trifasciata var. laurentii showed the highest purification per unit leaf area. (3) The combined results showed that Sansevieria trifasciata var. laurentii, Spathiphyllum floribundum and Aloe arborescens were the strongest absorbers and purifiers, while Podocarpus nagi and Anthurium andraeanum 'Pink champin' had the weakest absorption and purification capacity. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis and reference for the selection of plants with strong capacities to adsorb and purify benzene pollution in indoor air. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Key message: The VaBAM3 cloned from Vitis amurensis can enhance the cold tolerance of overexpressed plants, but VaBAM3 knock out by CRISPR/Cas9 system weakened grape callus cold tolerance. In grape production, extreme cold conditions can seriously threaten plant survival and fruit quality. Regulation of starch content by β-amylase (BAM, EC: 3.2.1.2) contributes to cold tolerance in plants. In this study, we cloned the VaBAM3 gene from an extremely cold-tolerant grape, Vitis amurensis, and overexpressed it in tomato and Arabidopsis plants, as well as in grape callus for functional characterization. After exposure to cold stress, leaf wilting in the VaBAM3-overexpressing tomato plants was slightly less pronounced than that in wild-type tomato plants, and these plants were characterized by a significant accumulation of autophagosomes. Additionally, the VaBAM3-overexpressing Arabidopsis plants had a higher freezing tolerance than the wild-type counterparts. Under cold stress conditions, the activities of total amylase, BAM, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase in VaBAM3-overexpressing plants were significantly higher than those in the corresponding wild-type plants. Furthermore, sucrose, glucose, and fructose contents in these lines were similarly significantly higher, whereas starch contents were reduced in comparison to the levels in the wild-type plants. Furthermore, we detected high CBF and COR gene expression levels in cold-stressed VaBAM3-overexpressing plants. Compared with those in VaBAM3-overexpressing grape callus, the aforementioned indicators tended to change in the opposite direction in grape callus with silenced VaBAM3. Collectively, our findings indicate that heterologous overexpression of VaBAM3 enhanced cold tolerance of plants by promoting the accumulation of soluble sugars and scavenging of excessive reactive oxygen species. In this paper, we investigate the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) for the parameter θ in the probability density function f (x ; θ) . We specifically focus on the application of moving extremes ranked set sampling (MERSS) and analyze its properties in large samples. We establish the existence and uniqueness of the MLE for two common distributions when utilizing MERSS. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that the MLE obtained through MERSS is, at the very least, as efficient as the MLE obtained through simple random sampling with an equivalent sample size. To substantiate these theoretical findings, we conduct numerical experiments. Furthermore, we explore the implications of imperfect ranking and provide a practical illustration by applying our approach to a real dataset. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Globular clusters harbor numerous millisecond pulsars, but long-period pulsars (P ≳ 100 ms) are rarely found. In this study, we employed a fast folding algorithm to analyze observational data from multiple globular clusters obtained by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), aiming to detect the existence of long-period pulsars. We estimated the impact of the median filtering algorithm in eliminating red noise on the minimum detectable flux density (Smin) of pulsars. Subsequently, we successfully discovered two isolated long-period pulsars in M15 with periods approximately equal to 1.928451 and 3.960716 s, respectively. On the P − P ˙ diagram, both pulsars are positioned below the spin-up line, suggesting a possible history of partial recycling in X-ray binary systems disrupted by dynamical encounters later on. According to timing results, these two pulsars exhibit remarkably strong magnetic fields. If the magnetic fields were weakened during the accretion process, then a short duration of accretion might explain the strong magnetic fields of these pulsars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A combined steering and braking collision avoidance control method based on model predictive control is proposed in the present paper. This method can overcome the limitations of single steering or braking collision avoidance and improve vehicle safety and tracking performance in extremely complex conditions. The utilization rate of tire force, path tracking performance, and driving stability are considered in the design of the model predictive control (MPC) optimization objective. In addition, the front wheel angle and four-wheel braking torque are taken as the optimization variables. Here, we initially assessed the preexisting antibody level to the MPXV B6 protein in vaccinia vaccinees born before the end of the immunization program and then identified two monoclonal antibodies (MAbs), hMB621 and hMB668, targeting distinct epitopes on B6, from one vaccinee. Binding assays demonstrate that both MAbs exhibit broad binding abilities to B6 and its orthologs in vaccinia (VACV), variola (VARV) and cowpox viruses (CPXV). Neutralizing assays reveal that the two MAbs showed potent neutralization against VACV. Animal experiments using a BALB/c female mouse model indicate that the two MAbs showed effective protection against VACV via intraperitoneal injection. Additionally, we determined the complex structure of B6 and hMB668, revealing the structural feature of B6 and the epitope of hMB668. Collectively, our study provides two promising antibody candidates for the treatment of orthopoxvirus infections, including mpox. There are limited therapeutics available for treatment of mpox. Purpose: To estimate the incidences of left renal vein (LRV) entrapment by right renal artery (RRA), a phenomenon primarily reported as case reports. Methods: The cross-sectional study consecutively screened renal vessel CT data of 38 (Renal) patients with nephropathy and 305 (Non-renal) patients with peripheral arterial diseases in a teaching hospital in northeast China between November 2018 and March 2023. The LRV compression by adjacent anatomical structures, including but not limited to RRA and multiple compression-related parameters, were investigated through multiplanar analysis of the CT data. Results: The overall LRV entrapment rates by adjacent structures were 41.93% (12/31) and 24.00% (6/25), the rates of RRA-sourced LRV compression 22.58% (7/31) and 20.00% (5/25), and the rates of compression by superior mesenteric artery (SMA) 16.13% (5/31) and 4.00% (1/25) in the Renal and Non-renal groups, respectively, with no significance. The venous segments distal to the RRA-compressed site had a significantly larger transectional lumen area than those of the non-compressed veins in both groups (3.09 ± 1.29 vs. 1.82 ± 0.23, p < 0.001 and 4.30 ± 2.65 vs. 2.12 ± 0.55, p = 0.006; maximum-to-minimum area ratios in Renal and Non-renal groups, respectively). Nearly 80% of RRAs were found arising anteriorly rightwards instead of passing straight to the right. Conclusion: RRA-sourced LRV compression was not rare, and its incidence was higher than that of the compression by SMA in both patient cohorts. RRA could be a more common compression source than SMA concerning LRV entrapment. Further investigations involving different populations, including healthy individuals, are needed. Machine learning-assisted modeling of the inter-atomic potential energy surface (PES) is revolutionizing the field of molecular simulation. With the accumulation of high-quality electronic structure data, a model that can be pretrained on all available data and finetuned on downstream tasks with a small additional effort would bring the field to a new stage. Here we propose DPA-1, a Deep Potential model with a gated attention mechanism, which is highly effective for representing the conformation and chemical spaces of atomic systems and learning the PES. We tested DPA-1 on a number of systems and observed superior performance compared with existing benchmarks. When pretrained on large-scale datasets containing 56 elements, DPA-1 can be successfully applied to various downstream tasks with a great improvement of sample efficiency. Surprisingly, for different elements, the learned type embedding parameters form a spiral in the latent space and have a natural correspondence with their positions on the periodic table, showing interesting interpretability of the pretrained DPA-1 model. Integrating hydrothermal treatment processes and anaerobic digestion (AD) is promising for maximizing resource recovery from biomass and organic waste. The process water generated during hydrothermal treatment contains high concentrations of organic matter, which can be converted into biogas using AD. However, process water also contains various compounds that inhibit the AD process. Fingerprinting these inhibitors and identifying suitable mitigation strategies and detoxification methods is necessary to optimize the integration of these two technologies. By examining the existing literature, we were able to: (1) compare the methane yields and organics removal efficiency during AD of various hydrothermal treatment process water; (2) catalog the main AD inhibitors found in hydrothermal treatment process water; (3) identify recalcitrant components limiting AD performance; and (4) evaluate approaches to detoxify specific inhibitors and degrade recalcitrant components. Common inhibitors in process water are organic acids (at high concentrations), total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), oxygenated organics, and N-heterocyclic compounds. Feedstock composition is the primary determinant of organic acid and TAN formation (carbohydrates-rich and protein-rich feedstocks, respectively). In contrast, processing conditions (e.g., temperature, pressure, reaction duration) influence the formation extent of oxygenated organics and N-heterocyclic compounds. Struvite precipitation and zeolite adsorption are the most widely used approaches to eliminate TAN inhibition. In contrast, powdered and granular activated carbon and ozonation are the preferred methods to remove toxic substances before AD treatment. Currently, ozonation is the most effective approach to reduce the toxicity and recalcitrance of N and O-heterocyclic compounds during AD. Microaeration methods, which disrupt the AD microbiome less than ozone, might be more practical for nitrifying TAN and degrading recalcitrant compounds, but further research in this area is necessary. Sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus is an ideal model organism for marine invertebrate aestivation; it annually enters a "sleeping state" for nearly 3 months when ambient water temperature range is 25–30 °C. The natural fasting is accompanied by remodeling the intestinal biota and function, which is a part of host biology and could affect the gut microbiota. We investigatesd the impact of annual aestivation on gut microbiota using high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA amplicons. Results reveal a notable alteration in the composition of gut bacteria during aestivation during which various indigenous families and genera that exhibit a preference for dietary glycans (e.g., family Rhodobacteraceae and Flavobacteriaceae) decreased, while the taxa capable of utilizing substrates derived from the host (e.g., genus Akkermansia and Prevotella) increased, and so did certain opportunistic pathogenic bacteria. Moreover, the investigation delved into the gut morphology and immunity response of A. japonicus and reveal that the intestine of A. japonicus undergoes substantial atrophy and degeneration during aestivation. However, there was an observed augmentation in the levels of acid and neutral mucin within mucous cells, as well as an enhanced immune defense response (as evidenced by increased gene expression of AjTLR3, LITAF, Ajp105, and LYZ). These results imply that the composition of sea cucumber gut microbiota differed between aestivation and active periods, which potentially affects the intestinal functions of the host and the symbiotic relationship between host and its microbiota over the active-aestivation cycle. The authors' series of studies aimed to explore the potential of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) in cellulose crystallographic studies, since THz radiation can detect most intermolecular vibrations and respond to lattice phonons. In this study, we tracked changes in four types of cellulose after ball milling. As the planetary ball milling time increases, it is observed through electron microscopy that the four types of cellulose particles are gradually destroyed into finer particles, while gel permeation chromatography can prove that the molecular weight gradually decreases after ball milling and the dispersity gradually approaches one, which indicates that the dispersion of the material was reduced. The most fascinating observation was made by THz-TDS, that is we have confirmed that after ball milling, the absorption characteristics of cellulose I and II in cellulose I treated with 10% NaOH (crystalline partial transition from cellulose I to II) exhibited an opposite trend. Specifically, the absorption of cellulose II at 2.40THz and 2.77THz increased, while the absorption of cellulose I at 2.11THz and 3.04THz decreased after ball milling, which suggests an increased conversion rate of cellulose I to cellulose II post-milling. Cellulose with different crystalline allomorphs shows different characteristic absorption in the THz region, and the peak position will not change even after the ball milling, only the absorption intensity changes. Although it can be observed through the most traditional X-ray diffraction method that the crystallinity index of all cellulose samples gradually decreases after ball milling. However, different from the THz results, the change after ball milling of cellulose I treated with 10% NaOH is only reflected in very subtle pattern changes, that is, the peak close to the 200 crystalline plane position is slightly shifted after ball milling. Introduction: Bariatric surgery (BS) patients are advised to consume protein supplements to prevent fat-free mass (FFM) loss. However, limited research has explored the efficacy of diverse protein presentations on FFM preservation. This study assesses if short peptide-based (SPB) supplements surpass complex protein-based (CPB) supplements in reducing early FFM loss post-surgery. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, 138 patients who underwent BS other than Roux-en-Y-gastric bypass (RYGB) between January 2021 and March 2021 at the Department of Bariatric Surgery of the Third People's Hospital of Chengdu were included for analysis. Patients were divided into two groups based on their consumption of protein supplements after surgery: SPB group and CPB group. Multiple linear regressions separated by sex were employed to examine the associations between SPB supplements and FFM loss and percentage of FFM (%FFM) loss, respectively. Results: Among participants, 69.6% were female, with a mean age of 33.3 years. In multiple linear regression analyses, SPB supplements were significantly and positively associated with a lower FFM loss in both female (ꞵ = − 1.14, P = 0.047) and male (ꞵ = − 2.36, P = 0.024), and were positively associated with a lower %FFM loss in both female (ꞵ = − 1.83) and male (ꞵ = − 2.26) but only significant in male (P = 0.049). Conclusion: SPB supplements may be more effective in preventing early FFM loss after BS, compared to CPB supplements, particularly among male patients. Taking inspiration from the recent advancements in deep learning within the three-dimensional (3D) domain, we propose an end-to-end deep learning framework to reconstruct 3D shapes in point cloud format from a single color image. While many state-of-the-art learning-based 3D reconstruction methods are constrained to fixed resolutions, our framework, named PushNet, can produce point clouds with arbitrary resolutions and only require sparse point clouds during training. It predicts a push force for each randomly sampled spacial point and leads the point to project onto the surface of the underlying 3D object in the image. The network also employs a parallel design, allowing it to be trained on sparse point clouds and then generate point clouds of any resolution without degrading the quality or requiring any fine-tuning. Experiments on synthetic datasets and real datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method for inferring 3D shapes. We also demonstrate that our predicted point clouds can produce high-fidelity meshes after applying surface reconstruction algorithms. In this paper, a theoretical model of the contact characteristics for layers on irregular surfaces is established by analyzing the contact deformation and slip ratio at the placement path points. Based on this model, a numerical algorithm for calculating the contact characteristics at any path point is proposed. The normal stress field, tangential stress field, and contact status of the contact area at four path points on the double-curved surface mold are obtained using the algorithm and verified through experiments. The results indicate that the model can be used to predict the contact characteristics at any placement path point, and the possible defects at points P3 and P4 are initially identified by analyzing the contact characteristics. In addition, compared to the 8-h computational time required for simulation calculation, this numerical algorithm takes only 20 ms to compute, which shows that the developed model has greatly reduced the calculation time. Metal packaging is an alternative technology to guarantee the environmental resistance and the performance reliability of ICs. Surface defect inspection of IC metal packages is an indispensable process during manufacturing. Here, a statistical modeling framework is proposed based on a GAN for surface defect inspection of IC metal packages, which involves several adaptive schemes. To the best of our knowledge, we first introduce the GAN to establish a machine vision based method for surface defect inspection of IC metal packages. IC metal package images are automatically acquired by an AOI system and employed for inspection via the proposed framework. To tackle the problem of imbalanced data in real industries, the framework only utilizes qualified samples to train the GAN template generator, which can characterize the intrinsic pattern of qualified samples. Then, a weight mask scheme is proposed to suppress the interference pixels in the difference image corresponding to qualified samples. Next, an adaptive thresholding scheme is proposed to adaptively determine an appropriate threshold for each inspected sample. Finally, an image patch-based defect evaluation scheme is designed to local-to-global evaluate the surface qualities of IC metal packages. Comparison experiments indicate that the proposed framework achieves better inspection performance in terms of 3.16% error rate and 0.89% mission rate at a reasonable inspection time of 119.86 ms per sample, which is superior to some existing deep learning based inspection methods for surface defect inspection of IC metal packages. Deep learning-based fault diagnosis models achieve great success with sufficient balanced data, but the imbalanced dataset in real industrial scenarios will seriously affect the performance of various popular deep learning models. Data generation-based strategy provides a solution by expanding the number of minority samples. However, many data-generation methods cannot generate high-quality samples when the imbalanced ratio is high. To address these problems, a dual-attention feature fusion network (DAFFN) with two-stream hybrid-generated data is proposed. First, the two-stream hybrid generator including a generative model and an oversampling technique is adopted to generate minority fault data. Then, the convolutional neural network is used to extract features from hybrid-generated data. In particular, a feature fusion network with a dual-attention mechanism, i.e., a channel attention mechanism and a layer attention mechanism are designed to learn channel-level and layer-level weights of the features. Purpose: Patients with hematologic malignancy (HM) commonly develop critical illness. Their long-term survival and functional outcomes have not been well described. Methods: We conducted a prospective, observational study of HM patients admitted to seven Canadian intensive care units (ICUs) (2018–2020). We followed survivors at 7 days, 6 months and 12 months following ICU discharge. The primary outcome was 12-month survival. We evaluated functional outcomes at 6 and 12 months using the functional independent measure (FIM) and short form (SF)-36 as well as variables associated with 12-month survival. Results: We enrolled 414 patients including 35% women. The median age was 61 (interquartile range, IQR: 52–69), median Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score was 9 (IQR: 6–12), and 22% had moderate–severe frailty (clinical frailty scale [CFS] ≥ 6). 51% had acute leukemia, 38% lymphoma/multiple myeloma, and 40% had received a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HCT). The most common reasons for ICU admission were acute respiratory failure (50%) and sepsis (40%). Overall, 203 (49%) were alive 7 days post-ICU discharge (ICU survivors). Twelve-month survival of the entire cohort was 21% (43% across ICU survivors). The proportion of survivors with moderate–severe frailty was 42% (at 7 days), 14% (6 months), and 8% (12 months). Median FIM at 7 days was 80 (IQR: 50–109). Physical function, pain, social function, mental health, and emotional well-being were below age- and sex-matched population scores at 6 and 12 months. Frailty, allogeneic HCT, kidney injury, and cardiac complications during ICU were associated with lower 12- month survival. Conclusions: 49% of all HM patients were alive at 7 days post-ICU discharge, and 21% at 12 months. Survival varied based upon hematologic diagnosis and frailty status. Due to the well-known domain shift problem, directly deploying a trained multi-modal classifier to a new environment usually leads to poor performance. The existing multi-modal domain adaption methods not only lack the fine-grained information of cross-modal data distribution, but also lack the cross-modal correlation research. Therefore, this paper proposes a multi-modal domain adaption method based on parameter fusion and two-step alignment (PFTS) to solve the related problems. The consistency of network parameters is used to enhance the correlation among modalities, and a higher-order moment measurement is introduced to improve the alignment of data distribution at the fine-grained level. In addition, the weighting of each modality is further carried out to achieve focused transfer. Comprehensive experiments based on multi-modal datasets with different domain adaption settings have been conducted, the results show that the precision of PFTS is 5.38% higher than state-of-the-art multi-modal domain adaption methods. Previous research on charitable donations have explored donors' attitudes and behaviours in response to one type of fundraising message (separate evaluation, SE). However, people are increasingly exposed to multiple fundraising messages based on which they make giving decisions (joint evaluation, JE). This study investigates charitable decision-making in joint evaluation through three scenario-based experiments. Study 1 found that decision-making was based on category attributes in SE and numerical attributes in JE, resulting in preference reversal across evaluation modes. Study 2 and Study 3 further demonstrated that the framing of charity appeals affected donation decisions. Participants' risk-based choices in joint evaluation are consistent with the value curve of prospect theory. Participants showed risk aversion in the positive framing, and risk preference in the negative framing. These findings enrich the research on evaluability theory together with donation under joint evaluation context and provide important insights for charities and charitable fundraisers. Syndactyly type V (SDTY5) is an autosomal dominant extremity malformation characterized by fusion of the fourth and fifth metacarpals. In the previous publication, we first identified a heterozygous missense mutation Q50R in homeobox domain (HD) of HOXD13 in a large Chinese family with SDTY5. In order to substantiate the pathogenicity of the variant and elucidate the underlying pathogenic mechanism causing limb malformation, transcription-activator-like effector nucleases (TALEN) was employed to generate a Hoxd13Q50R mutant mouse. The mutant mice exhibited obvious limb malformations including slight brachydactyly and partial syndactyly between digits 2–4 in the heterozygotes, and severe syndactyly, brachydactyly and polydactyly in homozygotes. Focusing on BMP2 and SHH/GREM1/AER-FGF epithelial mesenchymal (e-m) feedback, a crucial signal pathway for limb development, we found the ectopically expressed Shh, Grem1 and Fgf8 and down-regulated Bmp2 in the embryonic limb bud at E10.5 to E12.5. A transcriptome sequencing analysis was conducted on limb buds (LBs) at E11.5, revealing 31 genes that exhibited notable disparities in mRNA level between the Hoxd13Q50R homozygotes and the wild-type. These genes are known to be involved in various processes such as limb development, cell proliferation, migration, and apoptosis. Our findings indicate that the ectopic expression of Shh and Fgf8, in conjunction with the down-regulation of Bmp2, results in a failure of patterning along both the anterior-posterior and proximal-distal axes, as well as a decrease in interdigital programmed cell death (PCD). This cascade ultimately leads to the development of syndactyly and brachydactyly in heterozygous mice, and severe limb malformations in homozygous mice. These findings suggest that abnormal expression of SHH, FGF8, and BMP2 induced by HOXD13Q50R may be responsible for the manifestation of human SDTY5. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the construction project of composite stratum in the Guangzhou subway tunnel, the frequent occurrence of chordal eccentric wear of disk cutters has become a major problem restricting the smooth progress of the project. According to the disk cutter rock breaking mechanism, the wear morphology of the chordal eccentric wear disk cutter, the mechanical properties of the cutter ring material, the chemical element composition, and the observation of metallographic structure were comprehensively analyzed, and the causes of the chordal eccentric wear of the cutter were determined in combination with maintenance methods. The results of the mechanical property test show that the chemical element composition of the cutter ring material complies with the 4Cr5MoSiV1 steel standard and also has high hardness and good toughness. The metallographic structure is fine and is not prone to brittle fracture and overload. On this basis, combined with the cutter maintenance report, it is determined that the reason for the occurrence of chordal eccentric wear caused by the non-rotation of the disk cutter is the mismatch between the setting of starting torque and the excavation parameters. According to the critical condition for chordal eccentric wear of the cutter, some suggestions are put forward for the adjustment of the tunneling parameters to avoid the occurrence of chordal eccentric wear disk cutter during excavation. Achieving a low resistance contact is essential for developing two-dimensional (2D) material-based field-effect transistors (FETs). While n-type contacts to 2D semiconductors have been studied, understanding and designs for p-type contacts to 2D semiconductors remain very limited. In this study, we propose and computationally explore three strategies to improve the contact resistance in p-type 2D FETs, which remains a critical bottleneck of 2D logic technology, through the engineering of van der Waals (vdW) material heterostructures: (i) intercalating a graphene layer between a high-work-function metal and 2D semiconductor, which can result in low contact resistance of ~ 60 Ω μm for the graphene-intercalated contact between a high-work-function metal and WSe2 semiconductor; (ii) engineering the atomic stacking order between a vdW metal and 2D semiconductor, which can result in contact resistance of ~ 50 Ω μm; (iii) sandwiching the 2D layered semiconductor between vdW metals from both sides, which can further reduce the contact resistance to ~ 47 Ω μm and ~ 36 Ω μm for cases (i) and (ii), respectively. Experimental fabrication and characterization illustrate the feasibility of structural engineering of contacts. The above structural designs can lead to significantly reduced metal-induced gap states (MIGS) and low barrier height for holes, resulting in low contact resistance. They are also naturally compatible with the gate-all-around (GAA) transistor structure. The performance degradation and even damage of the e-textiles caused by sweat, water, or submersion during all-weather health monitoring are the main reasons that e-textiles have not been commercialized and routinized so far. Herein, we developed an amphibious, high-performance, air-permeable, and comfortable all-textile triboelectric sensor for continuous and precise measurement of epidermal pulse waves during full-day activities. Based on the principle of preparing gas by acid-base neutralization reaction, a one-piece preparation process of amphibious conductive yarn (ACY) with densely porous structures is proposed. An innovative three-dimensional (3D) interlocking fabric knitted from ACYs (0.6 mm in diameter) and polytetrafluoroethylene yarns exhibit high sensitivity (0.433 V·kPa−1), wide bandwidth (up to 10 Hz), and stability (> 30,000 cycles). With these benefits, 98.8% agreement was achieved between wrist pulse waves acquired by the sensor and a high-precision laser vibrometer. Furthermore, the polytetrafluoroethylene yarn with good compression resilience provides sufficient mechanical support for the contact separation of the ACYs. Meanwhile, the unique skeletonized design of the 3D interlocking structure can effectively relieve the water pressure on the sensor surface to obtain stable and accurate pulse waves (underwater depth of 5 cm). Evaluating the status and lifetime of organic coatings has great significance in structural safety. However, it is quite difficult to evaluate the lifetime of coatings priorly based on conventional visible indicators because they cannot measure the internal changes of coatings. In this paper, a new and effective composite indicator, i.e., circuit-resistance-impedance (CRI), is used to characterize the multi-source uncertainty of the performance degradation of coatings, and a three-stage electrochemical statistical model is proposed to evaluate the service life of organic coatings. Particularly, the Box-Cox transformation is first utilized to improve the normality of the distribution of corrosion rate. Then, a constrained maximum likelihood estimation algorithm considering failure mechanism equivalence is presented to estimate the unknown model parameters. Next, a time-varying reliability model is constructed based on proposed CRI failure criterion and the reliable lifetime of coatings is further evaluated. Finally, a rapid discrimination method of coating status is proposed through measuring the asynchrony of degradation using the coefficient of variation. A corrosion test for epoxy coatings is designed and conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed models. Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) can result in persistent complications, including circadian rhythm disorder, that substantially affect not only the injured people, but also the mood and social interactions with the family and the community. Pyroptosis in GFAP-positive astrocytes plays a vital role in inflammatory changes post-TBI. We determined whether VX-765, a low molecular weight caspase-1 inhibitor, has potential therapeutic value against astrocytic inflammation and pyroptosis in a rodent model of TBI plus hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation (HSR). A weight-drop plus bleeding and refusion model was used to establish traumatic exposure in rats. VX-765 (50 mg/kg) was injected via the femoral vein after resuscitation. Wheel-running activity was assessed, brain magnetic resonance images were evaluated, the expression of pyroptosis-associated molecules including cleaved caspase-1, gasdermin D (GSDMD), and interleukin-18 (IL-18) in astrocytes in the region of anterior hypothalamus, were explored 30 days post-trauma. VX-765-treated rats had significant improvement in circadian rhythm disorder, decreased mean diffusivity (MD) and mean kurtosis (MK), increased fractional anisotropy (FA), an elevated number and branches of astrocytes, and lower cleaved caspase-1, GSDMD, and IL-18 expression in astrocytes than TBI + HSR-treated rats. These results demonstrated that inhibition of pyroptosis-associated astrocytic activations in the anterior hypothalamus using VX-765 may ameliorate circadian rhythm disorder after trauma. In conclusion, we suggest that interventions targeting caspase-1-induced astrocytic pyroptosis by VX-765 are promising strategies to alleviate circadian rhythm disorder post-TBI. The Internet has enabled charitable fundraising to raise money through various social media platforms. However, individuals' avoidance behaviors toward charitable fundraising information are very common. Most people tend to choose not to browse the fundraising information. The avoidance behaviors will lead to interruption of donation process and affect subsequent donation behaviors. Using data collected from professional online survey platform, Study 1 with 274 responses were conducted to examine the influence of browsing on subsequent donation behaviors. And Study 2 with 290 responses examined the influence of fundraising title and information forwarder on donor's browsing intention. The results show that both the emotional titles and the forwarder's close relationship with the donor will trigger higher browsing intentions. In addition, perceived credibility as well as cognitive and emotional empathy mediate the influence. Furthermore, a donor's past donation experience moderates the relationship between emotional empathy and browsing intention. This study provides a theoretical system of donor's overall donation behaviors and provides practical suggestions for effective charitable fundraising through social media platforms.
