Purpose: As a vital component of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) nucleocapsid, HBV core protein (HBC) contributes to hepatocarcinogenesis. Here, we aimed to assess the effects of RANGAP1 and KDM2A on tumorigenesis induced by HBC. Methods: Co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) combined with mass spectrometry were utilized to identify the proteins with the capacity to interact with HBC. The gene and protein levels of RANGAP1 and KDM2A in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and HBV-positive HCC tissues were evaluated using different cohorts. The roles of RANGAP1 and KDM2A in HCC cells mediated by HBC were investigated in vitro and in vivo. Co-IP and western blot were used to estimate the interaction of HBC with RANGAP1 and KDM2A and assess RANGAP1 stabilization regulated by HBC. Results: We discovered that HBC could interact with RANGAP1 and KDM2A, the levels of which were markedly elevated in HCC tissues. Relying on RANGAP1 and KDM2A, HBC facilitated HCC cell growth and migration. The increased stabilization of RANGAP1 mediated by HBC was relevant to the disruption of the interaction between RANGAP1 and an E3 ligase SYVN1. RANGAP1 interacted with KDM2A, and it further promoted KDM2A stabilization by disturbing the interaction between KDM2A and SYVN1. HBC enhanced the interaction of KDM2A with RANGAP1 and upregulated the expression of KDM2A via RANGAP1 in HCC cells. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate a novel mechanism by which HBC facilitates hepatocarcinogenesis. We propose an autonomous quantum error correction scheme using squeezed cat (SC) code against excitation loss in continuous-variable systems. Through reservoir engineering, we show that a structured dissipation can stabilize a two-component SC while autonomously correcting the errors. The implementation of such dissipation only requires low-order nonlinear couplings among three bosonic modes or between a bosonic mode and a qutrit. While our proposed scheme is device independent, it is readily implementable with current experimental platforms such as superconducting circuits and trapped-ion systems. Compared to the stabilized cat, the stabilized SC has a much lower dominant error rate and a significantly enhanced noise bias. Furthermore, the bias-preserving operations for the SC have much lower error rates. In combination, the stabilized SC leads to substantially better logical performance when concatenating with an outer discrete-variable code. The surface-SC scheme achieves more than one order of magnitude increase in the threshold ratio between the loss rate κ1 and the engineered dissipation rate κ2. Under a practical noise ratio κ1/κ2 = 10−3, the repetition-SC scheme can reach a 10−15 logical error rate even with a small mean excitation number of 4, which already suffices for practically useful quantum algorithms. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent degenerative joint disease, and acrylamide is a chemical produced when foods are processed at high temperatures. Recent epidemiological research linked acrylamide exposure from the diet and environment to a number of medical disorders. However, whether acrylamide exposure is associated with OA is still uncertain. This study was aimed at assessing the relationship between OA and hemoglobin adducts of acrylamide and its metabolite glycidamide (HbAA and HbGA). Data were taken from four cycles of the US NHANES database (2003–2004, 2005–2006, 2013–2014, 2015–2016). Individuals aged between 40 and 84 years who had complete information on arthritic status as well as HbAA and HbGA levels were eligible for inclusion. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis s was performed to determine associations between study variables and OA. Restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to examine non-linear associations between the acrylamide hemoglobin biomarkers and prevalent OA. A total of 5314 individuals were included and 954 (18%) had OA. After adjusting for relevant confounders, the highest quartiles (vs. lowest) of HbAA (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 0.87, 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.63–1.21), HbGA (aOR = 0.82, 95% CI, 0.60–1.12), HbAA + HbGA (aOR = 0.86, 95% CI, 0.63–1.19), and HbGA/HbAA (aOR = 0.88, 95% CI, 0.63–-1.25) were not significantly associated with greater odds for OA. RCS analysis revealed that HbAA, HbGA, and HbAA + HbGA levels were non-linearly and inversely associated with OA (p for non-linearity < 0.001). However, the HbGA/HbAA ratio displayed a U-shaped relationship with prevalent OA. In conclusion, acrylamide hemoglobin biomarkers are non-linearly associated with prevalent OA in a general US population. These findings implicate ongoing public health concerns for widespread exposure to acrylamide. Electrochemical and immersion tests were conducted to characterize the bio-corrosion resistance of as-extruded Mg–Ca binary alloys with submicron grain size. The microstructures were further characterized by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electronic microscopy and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The grain size was estimated from OM and TEM images. Three samples and at least 20 images were used to evaluate the average grain size. Macro-textures of the as-extruded samples were measured via X-ray diffraction. The Mg–2Ca alloy extruded at 300 °C (2Ca-300) exhibits the lowest current density of 1.683 mA·cm−2 and corrosion rate of 22.14 g·m−2·day−1 in simulated body fluid, which is comparable with that of pure Mg. The Ca addition can reduce grain size of as-extruded Mg alloy and decrease the corrosion rate. The formed Mg2Ca phases would accelerate the local galvanic corrosion and protect the α-Mg matrix simultaneously due to the lower electrode potential. The lower defect density, finer grain size and weaker basal texture intensity contribute to the excellent bi-corrosion resistance of the 2Ca-300 alloy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The proper regulation of muscle stem cell (MuSC) fate by cues from the niche is essential for regeneration of skeletal muscle. How pro-regenerative niche factors control the dynamics of MuSC fate decisions remains unknown due to limitations of population-level endpoint assays. To address this knowledge gap, we developed a dual fluorescence imaging time lapse (Dual-FLIT) microscopy approach that leverages machine learning classification strategies to track single cell fate decisions with high temporal resolution. Using two fluorescent reporters that read out maintenance of stemness and myogenic commitment, we constructed detailed lineage trees for individual MuSCs and their progeny, classifying each division event as symmetric self-renewing, asymmetric, or symmetric committed. Our analysis reveals that treatment with the lipid metabolite, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), accelerates the rate of MuSC proliferation over time, while biasing division events toward symmetric self-renewal. In contrast, the IL6 family member, Oncostatin M (OSM), decreases the proliferation rate after the first generation, while blocking myogenic commitment. These insights into the dynamics of MuSC regulation by niche cues were uniquely enabled by our Dual-FLIT approach. We anticipate that similar binary live cell readouts derived from Dual-FLIT will markedly expand our understanding of how niche factors control tissue regeneration in real time. Based on covalent organic framework (COF) 1,3,5-tris-(4-formylphenyl)benzene-benzidine (TFPB-BD) in situ grown on Fe3O4 hollow microspheres and combined with gas chromatography-flame thermionic detector, a rapid and simple stir bar sorptive-dispersive microextraction method was developed for the determination of five triazole pesticides (paclobutrazol, hexaconazole, flusilazole, propiconazole, and tebuconazole). The synthesized TFPB-BD/Fe3O4 microspheres were characterized by transmission electron microscope, vibrating sample magnetometer, and thermogravimetric analysis, which showed that the material has strong magnetism and higher load capacity of COF. Under optimal conditions, the extraction equilibrium could be achieved within 9 min with detection limits of 0.17–1.48 μg L−1 (S/N = 3) and a linear range of 5–1000 μg L−1. Vortex holes at the welding interface will affect the interface sealing performance of the explosive welding clad plate, so in the production process to choose the appropriate parameters to avoid the production of vortex holes. The step method is used to study the titanium-copper explosive welding clad plate interface vortex holes generation and interface ripple morphology change law under different stand-off distances. Experimental results show that the shear strength of the welding interface, the wavelength and amplitude of the ripple are positively correlated with the stand-off distance. The closer to the interface, the greater the hardness; the presence of dislodged metal blocks in the melt zone leads to no significant increase in hardness. When the stand-off distance is 4 mm ( β = 16 ∘ , V p = 779 m / s ), the least amount of intermetallic compounds is generated at the interface. When the stand-off distance is not more than 8 mm ( β ≤ 19 ∘ , V p ≤ 947 m / s ), there are no vortex holes on the interface. The welding process is simulated by the smooth particle hydrodynamics method in AUTODYN. The aim of this work is to study the method of explosive welding to produce niobium-steel composite plate, which is used in nuclear industry equipment material manufacturing. The welding parameters were determined by weldability window, and numerical simulation was used to predict the wave shape of the welding interface. The morphology of the interface wave was observed by scanning electron microscope. Measured element distribution near the interface. The experimental samples were investigated using mechanical tests. The results show that the welding parameters optimized by theory and numerical simulation can be used to obtain a niobium-steel composite plate with better welding quality. It can be proved that the welding quality is better by observing the interface wave and testing the mechanical properties; it can be seen that the melting zone of the welding interface is composed of niobium and steel by the composition analysis instrument. The morphology of the welding interface wave is consistent with the numerical simulation results, and the numerical simulation shows the changes of temperature, strain, and stress during the welding process. During aging, the regenerative capacity of muscle stem cells (MuSCs) decreases, diminishing the ability of muscle to repair following injury. We found that the ability of MuSCs to regenerate is regulated by the primary cilium, a cellular protrusion that serves as a sensitive sensory organelle. Abolishing MuSC cilia inhibited MuSC proliferation in vitro and severely impaired injury-induced muscle regeneration in vivo. In aged muscle, a cell intrinsic defect in MuSC ciliation was associated with the decrease in regenerative capacity. Exogenous activation of Hedgehog signaling, known to be localized in the primary cilium, promoted MuSC expansion, both in vitro and in vivo. Delivery of the small molecule Smoothened agonist (SAG1.3) to muscles of aged mice restored regenerative capacity leading to increased strength post-injury. These findings provide fresh insights into the signaling dysfunction in aged MuSCs and identify the ciliary Hedgehog signaling pathway as a potential therapeutic target to counter the loss of muscle regenerative capacity which accompanies aging. Repair of muscle damage requires muscle stem cells, which lose regenerative capacity with aging. Quantum sensing protocols that exploit the dephasing of a probe qubit are powerful and ubiquitous methods for interrogating an unknown environment. They have a variety of applications, ranging from noise mitigation in quantum processors, to the study of correlated electron states. Here, we discuss a simple strategy for enhancing these methods, based on the fact that they often give rise to an inadvertent quench of the probed system: there is an effective sudden change in the environmental Hamiltonian at the start of the sensing protocol. These quenches are extremely sensitive to the initial environmental state, and lead to observable changes in the sensor qubit evolution. We show how these new features give access to environmental response properties. This enables methods for direct measurement of bath temperature, and for detecting non-thermal equilibrium states. We also discuss how to deliberately control and modulate this quench physics, which enables reconstruction of the bath spectral function. Extensions to non-Gaussian quantum baths are also discussed, as is the application of our ideas to a range of sensing platforms (e.g., nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond, semiconductor quantum dots, and superconducting circuits). When trying to characterise a bath coupled to a sensor qubit, one should consider that quantum environments change their properties in response to external perturbations. The accurate taxonomic concept of the fungal Chaetomium species has been a hard work due to morphological similarity. Chemotaxonomy based on secondary metabolites is a powerful tool for taxonomical purposes, which could be used as an auxiliary reference to solve the problems encountered in the classification of Chaetomium. Among secondary metabolites produced by Chaetomium, cytochalasans and azaphilones exhibited a pattern of distribution and frequency of occurrence that establish them as chemotaxonomic markers for the Chaetomium species. This review attempted to elucidate the composition of the Chaetomium species and its relationship with classical taxonomy by summarizing the pattern of cytochalasans and azaphilones distribution and biosynthesis in the Chaetomium species. Hypermethylation of distal-less homeobox 4 ( DLX4) has been increasingly identified in several cancers. Our study was aimed to determine the role of DLX4 methylation in regulating DLX4 expression and further analyze its clinical significance in de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients. DLX4 methylation level was detected by real-time quantitative methylation-specific PCR and bisulfite sequencing PCR. Treatment with 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine (5-aza-dC) was used for demethylation studies. Clinical significance of DLX4 methylation was obtained by the comparison between the patients with and without DLX4 methylation. DLX4 was significantly methylated in AML patients compared with controls ( P < 0.001). DLX4 methylation was negatively associated with DLX7 (the shorter DLX4 isoform) ( R = −0.202, P = 0.021) but not BP1 (the longer DLX4 isoform) ( R = −0.049, P = 0.582) expression in AML patients. DLX7 and BP1 messenger RNA (mRNA) were significantly increased after 5-aza-dC treatment in leukemic cell lines THP1 and Kasumi-1. DLX4 methylated patients showed significantly higher frequency of U2AF1 mutation compared with DLX4 unmethylated patients ( P = 0.043). Both all AML and non-M3 patients with DLX4 methylation presented significantly lower complete remission rate than those with DLX4 unmethylation ( P = 0.001 and <0.001, respectively). DLX4 methylated cases had significantly shorter overall survival than DLX4 unmethylated cases among both all AML ( P = 0.003), non-M3 AML ( P = 0.001), and cytogenetically normal AML ( P = 0.032). Multivariate analysis confirmed that DLX4 methylation was independent risk factor in both all AML and non-M3 patients. Our study indicates that DLX4 hypermethylation is negatively associated with DLX7 expression and predicts poor clinical outcome in de novo AML patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lanthanum sulfophenyl phosphate (LaSPP) was synthesized by m-sulfophenyl phosphonic acid and lanthanum nitrate. UV-Vis spectrophotometry and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicate that the desired product was obtained and its elementary composition and typical layered structure were determined by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) proved its typical layered structure and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy indicated its good crystallinity and the interlayer distance of about 15.67 Å , which matches the value obtained by TEM (2.0 nm). Thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis revealed good thermal stability of LaSPP. Proton conductivity of LaSPP was measured at different temperatures and relative humidities (RH), reaching values of 0.123 S cm-1 at 150°C and 100 % RH. Proton transfer activation energy was 22.52 kJ mol-1. At 160°C and 50 % RH, the conductivity was 0.096 S cm-1. In the drying oven, the conductivity retained the value of 1.118 × 10-2 S cm-1. The tumor suppressor gene phosphatase and tensin homologue (PTEN) plays a significant role in regulating cell growth, proliferation, and apoptosis. However, there are no data regarding the role of PTEN polymorphisms in the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). A hospital-based case-control study was conducted to investigate the potential association between PTEN polymorphisms and the risk of OSCC in a Chinese Han population. The study population comprised 201 patients with OSCC and 199 healthy controls. Seventeen single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of PTEN were investigated and genotyped using Sequenom Mass ARRAY and iPLEX-MALDI-TOF technology. The observed genotype frequencies of these polymorphisms were in agreement with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in the control group ( P > 0.05 for all). The heterozygous CT genotype was not associated with significantly increased risk for OSCC (OR = 0.89, 95 % CI = (0.55-1.42), P = 0.83), the TT genotype was not associated with increased risk for OSCC (OR = 1.01, 95 % CI = (0.58-1.74), P = 0.74) compared to the PTEN SNP rs1234224 homozygous CC genotype. Meanwhile, CT/TT variants were not associated with increased risk for OSCC compared with the CC genotype (OR = 0.93, 95 % CI = 0.60-1.44, P = 0.73). The T allele was not associated with significantly increased risk compared to the C allele (OR = 0.99, 95 % CI = 0.72-1.58, P = 0.69). Similar associations with the risk of OSCC were observed for the other genotypes of PTEN gene polymorphisms. There were no significant differences in the distribution of the genotype and allele frequencies of polymorphisms of the PTEN gene between the OSCC patients and controls in a Chinese Han population. Background: This study evaluated the safety and effectiveness of the extended lateral arm free flap (ELAFF) for repair of partial tongue defects after radical resection of tongue cancer. Methods: The study included nine consecutive patients who underwent repair of a partial tongue defect with an ELAFF after radical resection of tongue cancer from November 2010 to December 2013. Lesions were at the tip or margin of the tongue. Details of the reconstructive surgery, donor-site and recipient-site morbidity, and functional and esthetic outcomes were evaluated during a minimum of 12 months follow-up. Patient-reported Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores on a scale of 0 (minimum satisfaction) to 10 (maximum satisfaction) were used to evaluate esthetic outcomes. Results: All patients were followed up for 12 months (median 24 months). The overall survival rate was 88 % (8/9). The donor site was closed primarily in all patients. The most frequent donor-site morbidity was a broad scar. Poor functional outcomes were associated with postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy. The shape and function of the reconstructed tongue were satisfactory. VAS scores (mean ± SD) for patient satisfaction with recipient-site and donor-site esthetics were 6.92 ± 1.70 and 7.33 ± 2.01, respectively. Conclusion: The ELAFF is a safe and effective option for repair of partial tongue defects after radical resection of tongue cancer. To explore the effectiveness and safety of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) using recombinant tissue plasminogen activator in treating acute ischemic stroke patients with concomitant intracranial aneurysms (IA) of ≤3 mm. Clinical data of patients who were treated in Tianjin Huanhu Hospital from June 2012 to September 2013 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into the following groups: (a) IVT group, in which there were 30 acute ischemic stroke patients with IA of ≤3 mm and 30 patients without aneurysms; and (b) IA group, in which there were 30 patients who did not receive IVT and 30 patients who received IVT. The incidence of intracranial hemorrhage, case-fatality, and good outcome rate was compared within these two groups. Inside the IVT group, the incidence of systematic intracranial hemorrhage and case-fatality showed no significant differences between patients with concomitant IA and those without IA. The 3-month good outcome rate was also not significantly different (24 [80.0 %] vs. 27 [90 %]; P = 0.278). In IA group, patients who had received IVT showed significantly superior good outcome rate than those who had not received IVT (24 [80.0 %] vs. 16 [53.3 %]; P = 0.028).The incidence of intracranial hemorrhage and case-fatality rate were not significantly different between these two subgroups as well. This study aims to explore the safety and efficacy of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) in elderly (≥80 years old) acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients. The clinical data of patients who were treated in Tianjin Huanhu Hospital from June 2012 to November 2013 were retrospectively analyzed; among them, 404 patients had received IVT with rt-PA and 200 patients had not received IVT. Among ≥80-year-old patients, 204 had received IVT and 200 had not. And the 404 patients who had received IVT were divided into two subgroups: elderly (≥80 years of age; n = 204) and controls (<80 years old; n = 200). The incidence of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage, case fatality rate, and other prognostic indicators were compared. Among all ≥80-year-old patients, the IVT subgroup had significantly superior good outcome rates than the non-IVT subgroup at 24-h and 3-month along with significantly lower case fatality rate. But for the patients those who had received IVT, the incidence of ICH and the 7-day case fatality rate were not significantly increased in both the elderly and control subgroups. The 24-h and 3-month good outcome rates were not significantly different between these two subgroups as well. IVT with rt-PA is a safe and effective treatment for ≥80-year-old AIS patients. The use of intravenous thrombolytic therapy (ITT) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients is still debated in China. We present the analysis of clinico-demographic retrospective data of 646 AIS patients that were treated by alteplase ITT at our hospital. The data collected included age, gender, education, income, drug use before disease onset, and awareness of stroke/ITT. The risk factors studied were hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, atrial fibrillation, coronary heart disease, cerebral infarction, transient ischemic attack, valvular heart disease, thyroid disease, migraine, asymptomatic carotid stenosis, family history of stroke, hyperhomocysteinemia, smoking, drinking, and gingivitis. Pre-ITT patient data included blood pressure and time from onset to hospital. Post-ITT patient data included National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores, clinical outcome, revascularization, hemorrhage, healing rate, and 90-day mortality. Hospital management information included monthly ITT cases, discharges, bed turnaround times, length of hospital stay, bed utilization, drug ratio, massive cerebral infarction decompressive craniectomy, and social impact. Prognosis evaluation was based on post-ITT NIHSS and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores. We found that ITT success rate was 75.85 %, with a bleeding rate of 1.55 % and a 90-day mortality rate of 2.01 %. Objective: To observe the effects of different doses of Wenxiao Decoction (稳消方) on the expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) in experimental atherosclerotic rabbits and to explore the mechanism by which it alleviates atherosclerosis. Methods: Sixty New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into six groups: a blank group, a model group, a Simvastatin group, and high-, medium-, and low-dosage Wenxiao Decoction groups. Except for those in the blank group, all rabbits were fed with a high-cholesterol diet. Carotid atherosclerosis was established by balloon-induced carotid artery endothelium injury in conjunction with the high-cholesterol diet. After 8 weeks, all animals were euthanized to evaluate levels of IL-6 and ICAM-1 expressions (by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) and of MCP-1 (by immunohistochemistry staining). Results: The expressions of IL-6, ICAM-1, and MCP-1 were significantly increased in all groups except the blank group ( P<0.05). However, the rabbits in the Wenxiao Decoction groups and the Simvastatin group showed significantly lower levels of IL-6, ICAM-1, and MCP-1 expression than those in the model group ( P<0.05). The expressions of IL-6, ICAM-1, and MCP-1 in the highdosage Wenxiao Decoction group and the Simvastatin group were lower than those in the low-dosage Wenxiao Decoction group ( P<0.05). The expression of MCP-1 in medium-dosage Wenxiao Decoction group was lower than that in the low-dosage group ( P<0.05). Conclusions: High, medium, and low doses of Wenxiao Decoction can inhibit the expressions of IL-6, ICAM-1, and MCP-1, which may prevent and stabilize atherosclerotic plaques. Based on annual runoff data collected from several hydrological stations in the Nen River Basin from 1956 to 2004, the cumulative filter method, Mann-Kendall method and Morlet wavelet analysis were used to analyze variations in the characteristics and factors influencing runoff. Specifically, the general characteristics list as: The distribution of runoff was found to be uneven within a year, and the annual variation showed an overall decreasing trend. The abrupt change points of runoff were found to be in the early 1960s, middle 1980s and late 1990s. Multiple time scales analysis revealed three time-scale cycles, a long-term cycle of about 20-35 years with a scale center of 25 years, another cycle of about 8-15 years with a scale center of 11 years and a short-term cycle of about 5 years. Based on the Morlet wavelet transform coefficients figure of the 25-year time scale, it is preliminarily estimated that the Nen River Basin will enter a high flow period in 2013. Game-theoretic models predict that there is an ESS height for the plant population to which all individual plants should converge. To attain this conclusion, the neighborhood factors were assumed to be equal for all the individual plants, and the spatial pattern and size variation of population were left without consideration, which is clearly not right for the scenario of plant competition. We constructed a spatially-explicit, individual-based model to explore the impacts of spatial structure and size variation on individual plant's height and population's height hierarchies under the light competition. The monomorphic equilibrium of height that all the individual plants will converge to only exists for a population growing in a strictly uniform spatial pattern with no size variation. When the spatial pattern of the population is non-uniform or there's size variation among individual plants, the critical heights that individual plants will finally reach are different from each other, and the height inequality at the end of population growth will increase when the population's spatial pattern's degree of deviation from uniform and population's size variation increase. Many studies have examined the association between the GSTM1 null gene polymorphism and oral cancer risk in various populations, but their results have been inconsistent. To assess this relationship more precisely, a meta-analysis was performed. The PubMed and Embase databases were searched for case-control studies published up to May 2013. Data were extracted and pooled odds ratio (OR) with 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. Ultimately, 39 studies, comprising of 4,704 oral cancer cases and 7,090 controls, were included. Overall, for null versus present, the pooled OR was 1.29 (95 % CI = 1.20-1.40), and the heterogeneity was found in all studies. In the stratified analysis by ethnicity, significant risks were found among Asians (OR = 1.39, 95 % CI = 1.27-1.53; P = 0.000 for heterogeneity), but not in Caucasians (OR = 0.99, 95 % CI = 0.83-1.18; P = 0.677 for heterogeneity). Many studies have examined the association between the VEGF +936C/T (rs833061) and +460C/T (rs3025039) gene polymorphisms and oral cancer risk in various populations, but their results have been inconsistent. To assess this relationship more precisely, we performed a meta-analysis. The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases were searched for case–control studies that were published up to January 2013. Data were extracted and pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Ultimately, six studies were included, comprising 1006 oral cancer cases and 1016 controls. Overall, the pooled OR for VEGF +936 T allele carriers (TC + TT) versus the wild-type homozygotes (CC) was 1.28 (95 % CI 1.04–1.58; P = 0.228 for heterogeneity), the pooled OR for TT versus CC was 1.64 (95 % CI 1.34–1.98; P = 0.315 for heterogeneity), and the pooled OR for the T allele versus the C allele was 1.42 (95 % CI 1.22–1.76; P = 0.286 for heterogeneity). In the stratified analysis by ethnicity, significant risks were found among Caucasians but not Asians. However, there were no associations between VEGF +460C/T and oral cancer risk in only two of the included studies. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is considered as a prime mediator of angiogenesis and has been implicated in carcinogenesis and metastasis. Various studies examined the relationship between VEGF protein overexpression with the clinical outcome in patients with oral cancer, but yielded conflicting results. Electronic databases updated to March 2013 were searched to find relevant studies. A meta-analysis was conducted with eligible studies which quantitatively evaluated the relationship between VEGF overexpression and survival of patients with oral cancer. Survival data were aggregated and quantitatively analyzed. We performed a meta-analysis of 17 studies ( n = 1,207 patients) that evaluated the correlation between VEGF overexpression detected by immunohistochemistry and survival in patients with oral cancer. Combined hazard ratios suggested that VEGF overexpression had an unfavorable impact on overall survival (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.89; 95 % confidence interval [CI], 1.24-2.55) and disease-free survival (HR = 2.08; 95 % CI, 1.14-3.02) in patients with oral cancer: 1.77 (1.09-1.44) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) patients and 4.28 (1.35-7.21) in adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the salivary glands. In this work, we studied the effects of CUB and Sushi multiple domains 1 gene (CSMD1) expression in A375 melanoma cells in vivo and in vitro. CSDM1 expression decreased proliferation and migration, and increased apoptosis and G arrest in A375 cells in vitro. Expression of CSDM1 in established xenografted tumors decreased tumor size and weight, and decreased the density of intratumor microvessels. The survival rate of mice with tumors expressing CSMD1 was significantly higher than mice with tumors that did not express CSDM1. These results confirm the role of CSDM1 as a tumor suppressor gene in melanoma cells. Furthermore, we found that CSMD1 can interact with Smad3, activate Smad1, Smad2, and Smad3, and increase the expression of Smad4. Satellite cells are a heterogeneous population of stem and progenitor cells that are required for the growth, maintenance and regeneration of skeletal muscle. The transcription factors paired-box 3 (PAX3) and PAX7 have essential and overlapping roles in myogenesis. PAX3 acts to specify embryonic muscle precursors, whereas PAX7 enforces the satellite cell myogenic programme while maintaining the undifferentiated state. The singular points of a 6-SPS Stewart platform are distributed on the multi-dimensional singularity hypersurface in the task-space, which divides the workspace of the manipulator into several singularity-free regions. Because of the motion uncertainty at singular points, while the manipulator traverses this kind of hypersurface from one singularity-free region to another, its motion cannot be predetermined. In this paper, a detailed approach for the manipulator to traverse the singularity hypersurface with its non-persistent configuration is presented. First, the singular point transfer disturbance and the pose disturbance, which make the perturbed singular point transfer horizontally and vertically, respectively, are constructed. Through applying these disturbances into the input parameters within the maximum loss control domain, the perturbed persistent configuration is transformed into its corresponding non-persistent one. To investigate the risk factors of oral cancer, a hospital-based case-control study was conducted from March 1989 to September 1995 in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China. One hundred one patients (62 men and 39 women) with primary oral cancer were compared with 101 age- and sex-matched control patients without cancer. The associations of oral cancer with educational level, residential environment, cigarette smoking, and alcohol consumption were assessed by unconditional logistic regression analysis. The major findings were as follows. The lower the educational level, the higher the oral cancer risk. Living in industrial areas significantly elevated the risk in women. Men who smoked and drank alcohol were at a significantly higher risk for oral cancer, relative to nonsmokers and nondrinkers. In men, the risk significantly increased with increasing consumption of tobacco, by smoking nonfiltered cigarettes and hand-rolled cigarettes; and with increasing consumption of alcoholic beverages. Men who consumed both tobacco and alcoholic beverages were at significantly higher risk of oral cancer, compared to those without both habits.
