Protons consist of three valence quarks, two up-quarks and one down-quark, held together by gluons and a sea of quark-antiquark pairs. Collectively, quarks and gluons are referred to as partons. In a proton-proton collision, typically only one parton of each proton undergoes a hard scattering – referred to as single-parton scattering – leaving the remainder of each proton only slightly disturbed. Here, we report the study of double- and triple-parton scatterings through the simultaneous production of three J/ψ mesons, which consist of a charm quark-antiquark pair, in proton-proton collisions recorded with the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. We observed this process – reconstructed through the decays of J/ψ mesons into pairs of oppositely charged muons – with a statistical significance above five standard deviations. We measured the inclusive fiducial cross-section to be 272+141−104(stat)±17(syst)fb, and compared it to theoretical expectations for triple-J/ψ meson production in single-, double- and triple-parton scattering scenarios. We use a dense seismic network on the Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland, to image a group of earthquakes at 10–12 km depth, 2 km north-east of 2021 Fagradalsfjall eruption site. These deep earthquakes have a lower frequency content compared to earthquakes located in the upper, brittle crust and are similar to deep long period (DLP) seismicity observed at other volcanoes in Iceland and around the world. We observed several swarms of DLP earthquakes between the start of the study period (June 2020) and the initiation of the 3-week-long dyke intrusion that preceded the eruption in March 2021. During the eruption, DLP earthquake swarms returned 1 km SW of their original location during periods when the discharge rate or fountaining style of the eruption changed. The DLP seismicity is therefore likely to be linked to the magma plumbing system beneath Fagradalsfjall. However, the DLP seismicity occurred ~ 5 km shallower than where petrological modelling places the near-Moho magma storage region in which the Fagradalsfjall lava was stored. We suggest that the DLP seismicity was triggered by the exsolution of CO
2 -rich fluids or the movement of magma at a barrier to the transport of melt in the lower crust. Increased flux through the magma plumbing system during the eruption likely adds to the complexity of the melt migration process, thus causing further DLP seismicity, despite a contemporaneous magma channel to the surface. Repeat-sales indexes are the most widely used type of transaction based property price indexes. However, such indexes are particularly prone to revision. When a new period of transaction data becomes available and is used to update the repeat-sales model, all past index values can potentially be revised. These revisions are especially problematical for commercial real estate (as compared to housing), due to the relative scarcity of transaction data and the heterogeneity of the underlying properties. From a methodological perspective, the magnitude of the revisions is a particularly useful measure of the index quality, as it directly reflects both the precision of the index and its practical usefulness in economic and business applications. This paper focuses on index revisions in thin, commercial property markets, the type of market that is most challenging. We present multiple specifications of the repeat-sales model (both existing and new), seeking to reduce revisions. We are able to reduce overall index revisions by more than 50%, compared to more traditional repeat-sales models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our knowledge is limited on how weaned mammals adjust to environmental events in the absence of maternal assistance in the polar north. With the expectation that weaned offspring should express the adaptive potential of the mature phenotype, we determined their appetite and body mass responses to extreme cold. Between December and May when mean daily temperature (T
a , °C) was between − 48 and 2.3 we provided five naturally weaned reindeer calves (Rangifer tarandus L.) ad libitum a pelleted feed of 11% crude protein with access to snow only in individual fenced outdoor pens in interior Alaska (64° N 147° W). We predicted voluntary food intake would meet maintenance of body mass, but that extreme cold would result in an increase in appetite that would be compensated for by access to warm water. A linear mixed effect model indicated a moderate daily increase in body mass from 55.9 ± 1.6 kg on 9 December to 59.2 ± 0.6 kg on 14 May and a moderate increase in intake that was evidence for maintenance of thermal homeostasis. However, at both low (≤ 30) and high (≥ 10) Ta (°C) intake increased and we estimated a lower critical temperature of − 22 and upper critical temperature at − 10 that was indicative of high total-body insulation. Despite the appetite response at low Ta , provision of warm water did not affect intake. Thus, whereas adult reindeer restrict intake by mobilization of endogenous reserves the calf thermogenic response was an increase in appetite that indicated the importance of access to a food base for calves in winter. 10. McMaster at 50: lessons learned from five decades of PBL.

Although educators frequently act as if curricula are as standardized as drug doses (300 mg of PBL t.i.d.), such is not the case. As a case in point, at its inception, Problem Based Learning was hailed as a major curriculum innovation, with the promise of enormous gains in learning outcomes. Very quickly, ecclesiastical debates arose as what was true PBL and what was "modified PBL". Ironically, systematic reviews conducted fairly early in its evolution showed that the gains in learning outcome from PBL were neither large nor uniform (Vernon and Blake in Acad Med 68:550-563, 1993), and the most consistent finding was greater student satisfaction. In this paper, we review five decades of experience with the first PBL curriculum at McMaster. We point out how the curriculum has evolved, both theoretically and practically, in response to external influences, based both on empirical evidence and practical demands. We describe these changes in four broad domains-theoretical rationale, the curriculum, assessment and admissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Seasonal variation in the moisture content (MC) of standing trees can have a significant impact on wood (and when harvested) log weight; however, its variation is poorly understood owing to the destructive nature of sampling methodologies. To improve our understanding of temporal moisture variation, low cost systems that continuously monitor MC of standing trees are required. Time domain reflectometry (TDR) was explored as an option to estimate standing tree MC. TDR data was collected from ten loblolly and ten slash pine trees growing on the Lower Coastal Plain of Florida and ten loblolly pine from the Piedmont of Georgia on a weekly basis for approximately 1 year. Site specific calibrations were used to predict MC, but owing to a pronounced wound response it was not possible to accurately track temporal changes in whole-tree MC. If calibrations more oriented toward living trees can be obtained, it may be possible to use TDR to monitor temporal changes in standing tree MC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

13. Reduction of Fumarate to Succinate Mediated by Fusobacterium varium.

- Abstract
Accumulation of succinate as a fermentation product of Fusobacterium varium was enhanced when the anaerobic bacterium was grown on complex peptone medium supplemented with fumarate. Residual substrates and fermentation products were determined by proton NMR spectroscopy. Cells collected from the fumarate-supplemented medium (8-10 h after inoculation) supported the conversion of fumarate to succinate when suspended with fumarate and a co-substrate (glucose, sorbitol, or glycerol). Succinate production was limited by the availability of fumarate or reducing equivalents supplied by catabolism of a co-substrate via the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas (EMP) pathway. The choice of reducing co-substrate influenced the yield of acetate and lactate as side products. High conversions of fumarate to succinate were achieved over pH 6.6-8.2 and initial fumarate concentrations up to 300 mM. However, at high substrate concentrations, intracellular retention of succinate reduced extracellular yields. Overall, the efficient utilization of fumarate (≤ 400 mM) combined with the significant extracellular accumulation of succinate (corresponding to ≥ 70% conversion) indicated the effective utilization of fumarate as a terminal electron acceptor by F. varium and the potential of the methodology for the bioproduction of succinate. Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is a prevalent, incurable myopathy, linked to hypomethylation of D4Z4 repeats on chromosome 4q causing expression of the DUX4 transcription factor. However, DUX4 is difficult to detect in FSHD muscle biopsies and it is debatable how robust changes in DUX4 target gene expression are as an FSHD biomarker. PAX7 is a master regulator of myogenesis that rescues DUX4-mediated apoptosis. Here, we show that suppression of PAX7 target genes is a hallmark of FSHD, and that it is as major a signature of FSHD muscle as DUX4 target gene expression. This is shown using meta-analysis of over six FSHD muscle biopsy gene expression studies, and validated by RNA-sequencing on FSHD patient-derived myoblasts. DUX4 also inhibits PAX7 from activating its transcriptional target genes and vice versa. Furthermore, PAX7 target gene repression can explain oxidative stress sensitivity and epigenetic changes in FSHD. Thus, PAX7 target gene repression is a hallmark of FSHD that should be considered in the investigation of FSHD pathology and therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent reports of the widespread occurrence of the neurotoxin β- N-methylamino- l-alanine (BMAA) in cyanobacteria and particularly seafood have raised concerns for public health. LC-MS/MS is currently the analytical method of choice for BMAA determinations but incomplete separation of isomeric and isobaric compounds, matrix suppression and conjugated forms are plausible limitations. In this study, capillary electrophoresis (CE) coupled with MS/MS has been developed as an alternative method for the quantitative determination of free BMAA. Using a bare fused silica capillary, a phosphate buffer (250 mM, pH 3.0) and UV detection, it was possible to separate BMAA from four isomers, but the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.25 μg mL proved insufficient for analysis of typical samples. Coupling the CE to a triple quadrupole MS was accomplished using a custom sheath-flow interface. The best separation was achieved with a 5 M formic acid in water/acetonitrile (9:1) background electrolyte. Strong acid hydrolysis of lyophilized samples was used to release BMAA from conjugated forms. Field-amplified stacking after injection was achieved by lowering sample ionic strength with a cation-exchange cleanup procedure. Quantitation was accomplished using isotope dilution with deuterium-labelled BMAA as internal standard. An LOD for BMAA in solution of 0.8 ng mL was attained, which was equivalent to 16 ng g dry mass in samples using the specified extraction procedure. This was comparable with LC-MS/MS methods. The method displayed excellent resolution of amino acid isomers and had no interference from matrix components. The presence of BMAA in cycad, mussel and lobster samples was confirmed by CE-MS/MS, but not in an in-house cyanobacterial reference material, with quantitative results agreeing with those from LC-MS/MS. Mass loss and m/z 18 mass spectrometric ion signal temperature profiles are used to characterize interactions between benzoic acid, salicylic acid, and acetylsalicylic acid adsorbates and potassium, sodium, and calcium montmorillonites. Temperature-dependent water desorption trends show that all three adsorbates cause significant disruptions to clay interlayer water molecule environments. Results suggest that the source of this disruption is the formation of adsorbate-water molecule-cation bridging through the adsorbate acid functionality. Salicylic and acetylsalicylic acids perturb interlayer water molecule environments more than benzoic acid. This is most likely due to the additional hydrogen bond-forming capabilities afforded by the hydroxyl (salicylic acid) and ester (acetylsalicylic acid) groups attached to the aromatic rings of these adsorbates. The current paradigm of medical care depends heavily on the autonomous and highly trained doctor to collect and process information necessary to care for each patient. This paradigm is challenged by the increasing requirements for knowledge by both patients and doctors; by the need to evaluate populations of patients inside and outside one's practice; by consistently unmet quality of care expectations; by the costliness of redundant, fragmented, and suboptimal care; and by a seemingly insurmountable demand for chronic disease care. Medical care refinements within the old paradigm may not solve these challenges, suggesting a shift to a new paradigm is needed. A new paradigm could be considerably more reliant on health information technology because that offers the best option for addressing our challenges and creating a foundation for future medical progress, although this process will be disruptive. Pricing commercial real estate has its foundations in present value theory. Recent improvements for accessing transaction data have stimulated interest in commercial property hedonic pricing models, the structures of which follow traditions in single-family real estate in that the implicit prices of property characteristics and site-specific variables represent city and national market conditions. Adding present value variables has become increasingly common to account for general market conditions. We test two hedonic pricing models; one that follows the residential tradition and another that departs by incorporating city-specific net operating incomes and the discount rates. Modeling prices in these alternative ways allows for recognition of the relative contributions of property, city, and capital market determinants. Empirical testing relies on a sample of hotel transactions from 2005-2010. The responsiveness of hotel cash flows to market changes is an important consideration. We find that models with property characteristics perform about the same as models that also include present value variables. A plausible explanation for this phenomenon is that implicit prices corresponding to property characteristics and site-specific variables appear to reflect income streams associated with city and nationwide economic conditions. Large earthquakes can generate small changes in static stress: increases that trigger aftershock swarms, or reductions that create a region of reduced seismicity-a stress shadow. However, seismic waves from large earthquakes also cause transient dynamic stresses that may trigger seismicity. This makes it difficult to separate the relative influence of static and dynamic stress changes on aftershocks. Dyke intrusions do not generate dynamic stresses, so provide an unambiguous test of the stress shadow hypothesis. Here we use GPS and seismic data to reconstruct the intrusion of an igneous dyke that is 46 km long and 5 m wide beneath Bárðarbunga Volcano, central Iceland, in August 2014. We find that during dyke emplacement, bursts of seismicity at a distance of 5 to 15 km were first triggered and then abruptly switched off as the dyke tip propagated away from the volcano. We calculate the evolving static stress changes during dyke propagation and show that the stressing rate controls both the triggering and then suppression of earthquake rates in three separate areas adjacent to the dyke. Our results imply that static stress changes help control earthquake clustering. Similar small static stress changes may be important for triggering seismicity near geothermal areas, regions being hydrofractured and deflating oil and gas fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
