Photochemical and biological degradation of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and their interactions jointly contribute to the carbon dioxide released from surface waters in permafrost regions. However, the mechanisms that govern the coupled photochemical and biological degradation of DOC are still poorly understood in thermokarst lakes. Here, by combining Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and microbial high-throughput sequencing, we conducted a sunlight and microbial degradation experiment using water samples collected from 10 thermokarst lakes along a 1100-km permafrost transect. We demonstrate that the enhancement of sunlight on DOC biodegradation is not associated with the low molecular weight aliphatics produced by sunlight, but driven by the photo-produced aromatics. This aromatic compound-driven acceleration of biodegradation may be attributed to the potential high abilities of the microbes to decompose complex compounds in thermokarst lakes. These findings highlight the importance of aromatics in regulating the sunlight effects on DOC biodegradation in permafrost-affected lakes. Tumefactive demyelinating lesion (TDL) is an immune-mediated disease which can be misdiagnosed as glioma. At present, there is no study comparing difference between the two disorders at the cellular level. Here, we perform integrative and comparative single-cell RNA sequencing (ScRNA-seq) transcriptomic analysis on TDL and glioma lesions. At single-cell resolution, TDL is comprised primarily of immune cells, which is completely different from glioma. The integrated analysis reveals a TDL-specific microglial subset involving in B cell activation and proliferation. Comparative analysis highlights remyelination function of glial cells and demyelination function of T cells in TDL. Subclustering and pseudotime trajectory analysis of T cells in TDL reveal their heterogeneity and diverse functions involving in TDL pathogenesis and recovery process. Our study identifies substantial differences between TDL and glioma at single-cell resolution. The observed heterogeneity and potentially diverse functions of cells in TDL may be critical in disease progression. Molten-salt-based nanofluids and ionic-liquid-based nanofluids are developed for thermal storage and heat transfer at relatively high temperatures, in the past few years. Preparation and stabilization techniques are briefly introduced firstly, and then, thermal properties, e.g., specific heat, thermal conductivity and viscosity, are summarized and discussed in detail. The properties are not only affected by the characteristics of nanomaterials and base fluids, but also affected by the synthesis method, such as the sonication intensity and duration. Some of the thermophysical property data are still incomplete, especially the thermal conductivity of molten-salt-based nanofluids, and properties of ionic-liquid-based nanofluids at high temperatures. While several literature works show that the Krieger–Dougherty model can well predict the viscosity, no general models for thermal conductivity and specific heat have been developed yet for both types of nanofluids. Water-butanol and water-hexane flows were visualized in ultra-shallow straight and serpentine microchannels with a cross-junction. At the inlet cross-junction, three major flow patterns including tubing/threading, dripping and jetting were mapped using the aqueous Capillary number versus the organic Weber number. Correspondingly, in the main microchannel, annular flow, slug flow and droplet flow were mapped using combined dimensionless numbers (Weber number times Ohnesorge number) of both phases. The flow pattern transitions were explained based on a force analysis, considering the phase flow rates, junction angle between the side feeding channels and the central feeding channel as well as aspect ratios. Compared to the straight microchannel, the dripping regime at the inlet junction and the slug flow occupy larger zones in serpentine microchannels because the centrifugal force tends to break up the organic annular core into slugs and droplets over the bends. This study aims to reveal the effects of liquid entrainment, initial entrained fraction and tube diameter on liquid film dryout in vertical upward annular flow for flow boiling. Entrainment and deposition rates of droplets were included in mass conservation equations to estimate the local liquid film mass flux in annular flow, and the critical vapor quality at dryout conditions. Different entrainment rate correlations were evaluated using flow boiling data of water and organic liquids including n-pentane, iso-octane and R134a. Effect of the initial entrained fraction (IEF) at the churn-to-annular flow transition was also investigated. A transitional Boiling number was proposed to separate the IEF-sensitive region at high Boiling numbers and the IEF-insensitive region at low Boiling numbers. Besides, the diameter effect on dryout vapor quality was studied. The dryout vapor quality increases with decreasing tube diameter. It needs to be pointed out that the dryout characteristics of submillimeter channels might be different because of different mechanisms of dryout, i.e., drying of liquid film underneath long vapor slugs and flow boiling instabilities. Staggered pattern perforations are introduced to isolated isothermal plates, vertical parallel isothermal plates, and vertical rectangular isothermal fins under natural convection conditions. The performance of perforations was evaluated theoretically based on existing correlations by considering effects of ratios of open area, inclined angles, and other geometric parameters. It was found that staggered pattern perforations can increase the total heat transfer rate for isolated isothermal plates and vertical parallel plates, with low ratios of plate height to wall-to-wall spacing ( H/s), by a factor of 1.07 to 1.21, while only by a factor of 1.03 to 1.07 for vertical rectangular isothermal fins, and the magnitude of enhancement is proportional to the ratio of open area. However, staggered pattern perforations are detrimental to heat transfer enhancement of vertical parallel plates with large H/s ratios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Liquid–liquid two-phase flow in microchannel is very common in micro-chemical and micro-biological system, etc. Deep understanding of the liquid–liquid two-phase flow mechanisms and mass transfer in microchannel can promote industrial applications significantly. To summarize the recent research progress on the liquid–liquid two-phase flow in microchannel, this paper collects research work about this topic, especially focusing on flow pattern and mass transfer. To begin with, flow patterns observed in various conditions are identified and factors which influence the flow patterns are analyzed. Then, mass transfer in liquid–liquid two-phase flow is discussed, especially the mass transfer during droplet flow, with both experiments and simulations. Furthermore, energy dissipation involved in liquid–liquid two-phase flow in microchannel is also briefly discussed. Finally, future needs are proposed for extending the researches on liquid–liquid two-phase flow and enlarging its application fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
