Aims: Silicon (Si) is an essential element for siliceous organisms, including macrophytes, phytoplankton, and diatoms. Coastal wetlands are critical for bridging the river-estuary-ocean continuum to drive the biogeochemical Si cycles. However, it remains unclear about the contents and distribution patterns of bioavailable Si in soils under various scenarios, and their environmental controls in coastal wetlands. Methods: We conducted a nationwide sampling campaign across ca. 5000 km of coastal wetlands, covering temperate, subtropical, and tropical climates in China, and quantified plant available Si (ASi) using calcium chloride extractable Si (Si-CaCl2). Results: S. alterniflora invasion did not significantly influence ASi content. In contrast, ASi content in the subtropical zone was higher than in the both temperate (medium) and tropical zones (lowest). ASi content was significantly positively correlated with nutrients (i.e., soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP)), soil water content (SWC), clay and silt contents, but negatively with soil bulk density (BD) and sand content. ASi content, in detail, increased with increasing pH (pH < 7) but decreased with increasing pH (pH > 7), showing a quadratic function relationship. Conclusions: ASi in coastal wetlands was predominately directly influenced by pH, particle size, and nutrients of coastal soil, while vegetation compositions and plant-derived lignin (Λ8) inputs illustrated a minor effect on ASi patterns. Mean annual temperature (MAT) and precipitation (MAP) indirectly regulated ASi content via affecting soil geochemistry and nutrients distribution. Taken together, ASi distribution are mostly controlled by primary pedogenesis and specific weathering processes in China's coastal wetlands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: Natural stable isotope compositions of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) can reveal biogeochemical mechanisms that control ecosystem carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) processes. However, little is known about the latitudinal patterns and controlling mechanisms for soil δ13C and δ15N in coastal wetlands based on a large spatial scale. Methods: A total of 76 sites of coastal wetlands were sampled along a 5000 km transect across temperate-subtropical-tropical zones to explore biological and environmental controls on soil stable C and N isotopic compositions. Results: The results showed that soil δ13C (ranging from -27.5‰ to -18.3‰) and δ15N (from 2.66‰ to 9.97‰) varied over a broad geographic scale. The C4-plant (Spartina alterniflora) dominated sites have 2–6‰ higher δ13C values than those of other vegetation types, while mangrove soils have lower δ13C values compared to those of marshes; and soils with vegetated C4-plants and mangroves have 1–3‰ higher δ15N values relative to native grass marshes. There were no significant relationships between mean annual temperature (MAT) or precipitation (MAP) and δ13C, but positive correlations between MAT and δ15N, as well as MAP and δ15N. Conclusions: Vegetation composition and plant C inputs directly control the spatial variability of δ13C patterns. Simultaneously, climate and edaphic variables (e.g., soil water content, pH, and C availability) are the predominant factors influencing δ15N patterns. These findings provide new insights into soil organic matter turnover and response to climate and environmental changes and improve the prediction of C stability and burial in coastal wetlands. Chromium (Cr) is a common environmental contaminant due to industrial processes and anthropogenic activities such as mining of chrome ore, electroplating, timber treatment, leather tanning, fertilizer and pesticide, etc. Cr exists mainly in both hexavalent [Cr(VI)] and trivalent [Cr(III)] form, being Cr(VI) with non-degradability and potential to be hidden, thereby affecting surrounding environment and being toxic to human health. Therefore, researches on remediation of Cr pollution in the environment have received much attention. Biochar is a low-cost adsorbent, which has been identified as a suitable material for Cr(VI) immobilization and removal from soil and wastewater. This review incorporates existing literature to provide a detailed examination into the (1) Cr chemistry, the source and current status of Cr pollution, and Cr toxicity and health; (2) feedstock and characterization of biochar; (3) processes and mechanisms of immobilization and removal of Cr by biochar, including oxidation–reduction, electrostatic interactions, complexation, ion exchange, and precipitation; (4) applications of biochar for Cr(VI) remediation and the modification of biochar to improve its performance; (5) factors affecting removal efficiency of Cr(VI) with respect to its physico-chemical conditions, including pH, temperature, initial concentration, reaction time, biochar characteristics, and coexisting contaminants. Finally, we identify current issues, challenges, and put forward recommendations as well as proposed directions for future research. This review provides a thorough understanding of using biochar as an emerging biomaterial adsorbent in Cr(VI)-contaminated soils and wastewater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fruit shell residue from Xanthoceras sorbifolia was investigated as a potential biosorbent to remove crude oil from aqueous solution. The shell powder and its carbonized material were compared while assessing various factors that influenced oil removal capacity. The structure and sorption mechanism were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The oil removal capacity of the raw material (75.1 mg g−1) was better than the carbonized material (49.5 mg g−1). The oil removal capacity increased with greater saponin content, indicating that hydrophobic and lipophilic surface characteristics of the saponins improved adsorption by the raw X. sorbifolia shell. An orthogonal experimental design was used to optimize the adsorption. Using 4 g L−1 of raw X. sorbifolia shell (particle size of < 0.15 mm), the highest crude oil removal efficiency was obtained using an initial oil concentration of 400 mg L−1, adsorption temperature of 30 °C, adsorption time of 10 min at a shaking speed of 150 rpm. The adsorption of crude oil onto X. sorbifolia shell was best described using a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Raw X. sorbifolia shell material was more efficient than the carbonized material at crude oil removal from aqueous solution. This was attributable to the functional groups of saponins in raw X. sorbifolia shell. This study highlights that some agricultural and forest residues could be a promising source of low-cost biosorbents for oil contaminants from water—without requiring additional processing such as carbonization. Abiotic and biotic stresses are the major factors limiting plant growth worldwide. Plants exposed to abiotic and biotic stresses often cause reduction in plant biomass as well as crop yield, resulting in plant biomass carbon loss. As a beneficial and quasi-essential element, silicon accumulation in rhizosphere and plants can alleviate the unfavorable effects of the major forms of abiotic and biotic stress through several resistance mechanisms and thus increases plant biomass accumulation and crop yield. The beneficial effects of silicon on plant growth and crop yield have been widely reviewed over the last years. However, carbon accumulation of silicon-associated plant biomass under abiotic and biotic stresses has not yet been systematically addressed. This review article focuses on both the main mechanisms of silicon-mediated alleviation of abiotic and biotic stresses and their effects on plant biomass carbon accumulation in terrestrial ecosystems. The major points are the following: (1) the recovery of plant biomass via silicon mediation usually exhibits a bell-shaped response curve to abiotic stress severity and an S-shaped response curve to biotic stress severity; (2) although carbon concentration of plant biomass decreases with silicon accumulation, more than 96% of the recovered plant biomass contributes to plant biomass carbon accumulation; (3) silicon-mediated recovery generally increases plant biomass carbon by 35% and crop yield by 24%. In conclusion, silicon can improve plant growth and enhance plant biomass carbon accumulation under abiotic and biotic stresses in terrestrial ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

However, the mechanisms by which Si affects plant biomass accumulation in coastal wetlands are not well explored.We conducted a sampling campaign across the whole growing season of Phragmites australis under waterlogging and drought conditions in coastal wetland, and quantified the effects of Si availability on biomass accumulation.Compared with drought condition, the waterlogged condition improved the utilization efficiency of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) of P. australis regulated by higher Si contents. Meanwhile, the increased Si contents promoted the utilization of N and P in leaf, suggesting that the increase in Si contents optimizes the photosynthetic process. Lignin contents in P. australis decreased with the increasing Si contents, which confirmed that Si can replace structural carbon components.
