Mosaic valve shows higher pressure gradient after aortic valve replacement compared to other same size labeled prostheses in postoperative echocardiogram. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mid-term echocardiogram findings and long-term clinical outcomes of patients receiving a 19 mm Mosaic. Forty-six aortic stenosis patients receiving 19 mm Mosaic and 112 patients receiving either 19 mm Magna or Inspiris, who underwent mid-term follow-up echocardiogram were included in the study. Mid-term hemodynamic measurements evaluated by trans-thoracic echocardiogram and long-term outcomes were compared. Patients receiving Mosaic were significantly older (Mosaic: 76 ± 5.1 years vs. Magna/Inspiris: 74 ± 5.5 years, p = 0.046) and had smaller body surface area (Mosaic: 1.40 ± 0.114m2 vs. Magna/Inspiris: 1.48 ± 0.143m2, p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in comorbidities and medications. Post-operative echocardiogram performed at 1 week after the surgery showed higher maximum pressure gradient in patients receiving Mosaic (Mosaic: 38 ± 13.5 mmHg vs. Magna/Inspiris: 31 ± 10.7 mmHg, p = 0.002). Furthermore, mid-term echocardiogram follow-up performed at median duration of 53 ± 14.9 months after the surgery continuously showed higher maximum pressure gradient in patients receiving Mosaic (Mosaic: 45 ± 15.6 mmHg vs. Magna/Inspiris: 32 ± 13.0 mmHg, p < 0.001). However, there were no significant difference in changes in left ventricular mass from baseline in both groups. Kaplan–Meyer curve also showed no difference in long-term mortality and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular event between the two groups. Although the pressure gradient across the valve evaluated by echocardiogram was higher in 19 mm Mosaic compared to 19 mm Magna/Inspiris, there were no significant differences in left ventricular remodeling and long-term outcomes between the two groups. Purpose: To examine the characteristics of drug-loaded superabsorbent polymer microspheres (SAP-MS) such as drug absorption, drug release, diameter, and visibility. Materials and Methods: SAP-MS (HepaSphere150–200 µm; Merit Medical, South Jordan, UT, USA) were suspended in drug solutions: (a) cefazolin, (b) lidocaine, (c) iopamidol and cefazolin, (d) iopamidol and lidocaine, and (e) iopamidol, cefazolin, and lidocaine. The concentrations of drugs were measured, and the amount of each drug absorbed was calculated. Filtered drug-loaded SAP-MS were mixed with saline, and the drug release rates were calculated. The diameter changes of SAP-MS during absorption were observed. Radiography of drug-loaded SAP-MS was evaluated as radiopacity by contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). Results: The drug concentration did not change during absorption. The release rates increased for 10 min and then came to an equilibrium. The mean amounts of drug absorbed at 180 min and mean release rates at 24 h were (a) cefazolin: 265.4 mg, 64.2%; (b) lidocaine: 19.6 mg, 75.6%; (c) iopamidol: 830.2 mg, 22.5%; cefazolin: 137.6 mg, 21.2%; (d) iopamidol: 1620.6 mg, 78.5%; lidocaine: 13.5 mg, 81.4%; and (e) iopamidol: 643.7 mg, 52.9%; cefazolin: 194.0 mg, 51.6%; lidocaine: 5.3 mg, 58.4%. The diameter of SAP-MS increased for approximately 15 min. Finally, the diameters of SAP-MS were (a) 3.9 times, (b) 5.0 times, (c) 2.2 times, (d) 5.5 times, and (e) 3.6 times larger than the original size. Drug-loaded SAP-MS containing iopamidol were visible under X-ray imaging, with CNRs of (c) 3.0, (d) 9.0, and (e) 4.5. Conclusion: SAP-MS can absorb and release iopamidol, cefazolin, and lidocaine. Genome compaction and activity in the nucleus depend on spatiotemporal changes in the organization of chromatins in chromosomes. However, the direct imaging of the chromosome structures in the nuclei has been difficult and challenging. Herein, we directly visualized the structure of chromosomes in frozen-hydrated nuclei of budding yeast in the interphase using X-ray laser diffraction. The reconstructed projection electron density maps revealed inhomogeneous distributions of chromosomes, such as a 300 nm assembly and fibrous substructures in the elliptic-circular shaped nuclei of approximately 800 nm. In addition, from the diffraction patterns, we confirmed the absence of regular arrangements of chromosomes and chromatins with 400–20 nm spacing, and demonstrated that chromosomes were composed of self-similarly assembled substructural domains with an average radius of gyration of 58 nm and smooth surfaces. Based on these analyses, we constructed putative models to discuss the organization of 16 chromosomes, carrying DNA of 4.1 mm in 800 nm ellipsoid of the nucleus at the interphase. We anticipate the structural parameters on the fractal property of chromosomes and the experimental images to be a starting point for constructing more sophisticated 3D structural models of the nucleus. Chordoma is a rare malignant bone tumor arising from notochordal tissue. Conventional treatments, such as radical resection and high-dose irradiation, frequently fail to control the tumor, resulting in recurrence and re-growth. In this study, genetic analysis of the tumor in a 72-year-old male patient with refractory conventional chordoma of the skull base revealed a high tumor mutational burden (TMB) and mutations in the MSH6 and MLH1 genes, which are found in Lynch syndrome. The patient and his family had a dense cancer history, and subsequent germline genetic testing revealed Lynch syndrome. This is the first report of a chordoma that has been genetically proven to be Lynch syndrome. Chordomas usually have low TMB; however, this is an unusual case, because the TMB was high, and immune checkpoint inhibitors effectively controlled the tumor. This case provides a basis for determining the indications for immunotherapy of chordoma based on the genetic analysis. Purpose: To evaluate the accuracy of needle placement using a three-dimensional (3D) augmented reality (AR) protractor on smartphones (AR Puncture). Materials and Methods: An AR protractor that can be rotated in three directions against the CT plane with angle guidance lines for smartphones was developed. The protractor center can be adjusted to an entry point by manually moving the smartphone with the protractor center fixed at the center of the screen (Fix-On-Screen) or by image tracking with a printed QR code placed at an entry point (QR-Tracking). Needle placement was performed by viewing a target line in the tangent direction with the Bull's eye method. The needle placement errors placed by four operators in six out-of-plane directions in a phantom using a smartphone (iPhone XR, Apple, Cupertino, CA, USA) were compared with two registration methods. Results: No significant difference in the average needle placement error was observed between the Fix-On-Screen and QR-Tracking methods (5.6 ± 1.7 mm vs. 6.1 ± 2.9 mm, p = 0.475). The average procedural time of the Fix-On-Screen method was shorter than that of the QR-Tracking method (71.0 ± 23.9 s vs. 98.4 ± 59.5 s, p = 0.042). Conclusion: The accuracies of out-of-plane needle placements using the 3D AR protractor with the two registration methods were equally high, with short procedure times. Purpose: A Lactobacillus-dominated microbiota in the endometrium was reported to be associated with favorable reproductive outcomes. We investigated in this study whether 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing analysis of the uterine microbiome improves pregnancy outcomes. Methods: This prospective cohort study recruited a total of 195 women with recurrent implantation failure (RIF) between March 2019 and April 2021 in our fertility center. Analysis of the endometrial microbiota by 16S rRNA gene sequencing was suggested for all patients who had three or more failed embryo transfers (ETs). One hundred and thirty-one patients underwent microbial 16S rRNA gene sequencing (study group) before additional transfers, while 64 patients proceeded to ET without that analysis (control group). The primary outcome was to compare the cumulative clinical pregnancy rate of two additional ETs. Main results: An endometrial microbiota considered abnormal was detected in 30 patients (22.9%). All but one of these 30 patients received antibiotics according to the bacterial genus detected in their sample, followed by treatment with probiotics. As a result, the cumulative clinical pregnancy rate (study group: 64.5% vs. control group: 33.3%, p = 0.005) and the ongoing pregnancy rate (study group: 48.9% vs. control group: 32.8%, p = 0.028) were significantly increased in the study group compared to the control group. Conclusion: Personalized treatment recommendations based on the microbial 16S rRNA gene sequencing of the uterine microbiota can improve IVF outcomes of patients with RIF. Let M be a connected compact oriented surface with one boundary component. A C ∞ map f : M → R 2 is weakly admissible if it behaves locally like a stable map on a neighbourhood of the boundary ∂ M of M. The notions of the half boundary winding number of a weakly admissible C ∞ map M → R 2 and weakly-admissibly homotopic among weakly admissible C ∞ maps M → R 2 are introduced. Then, we show that weakly admissible C ∞ maps f 0 and f 1 : M → R 2 are weakly-admissibly homotopic if and only if the half boundary winding number of f 0 coincides with that of f 1 . Apathy is frequently observed in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) and worsens cognitive impairment and gait disturbance. In this study, we evaluated the regions associated with apathy in iNPH using statistical imaging analysis on the whole brain, both in terms of cerebral blood flow and gray matter volume. Twenty-seven patients with iNPH were assigned to two groups based on their scores on the neuropsychiatric inventory items related to apathy; 18 patients were assigned to the group with apathy (iNPH + APA) and 9 to the group without apathy (iNPH − APA). The magnetic resonance images and cerebral blood flow single-photon emission computed tomography data of the two groups were compared using statistical parametric mapping 12. The regional gray matter volume of the right precuneus was significantly larger in the iNPH + APA group than in the iNPH − APA group, but the regional cerebral blood flow in any region of the brain was not significantly different between the two groups. These results suggested that the larger gray matter volume, which is thought to reflect gray matter compression, in the precuneus might be involved in apathy in iNPH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rapid deployment valve has expanded surgical indication for high-risk patients with aortic stenosis despite its accommodated risk for conduction disorder (CD). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the degree of oversizing in association with postoperative CD. During June 2019 to September 2021, 25 patients underwent aortic valve replacement with Edwards INTUITY. Device size selection was evaluated intraoperatively using provided sizers. Oversizing was evaluated retrospectively by measuring the difference of the dimension of the annulus and left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) compared to the dimensions of the device used by preoperative-computed tomography. Although there was no incidence of pacemaker implantation, seven patients (28.0%) experienced CD after surgery. There was no difference in device area and annulus area (CD: − 37 ± 22.7 mm2 vs. no CD: − 56 ± 63.6 mm2, p = 0.47), and device circumference and annulus circumference (CD: − 4.4 ± 2.77 mm vs. no CD: − 6.9 ± 5.60 mm, p = 0.26) in patients with and without CD. However, there was a significant difference in area of the device skirt and sub-annular area at the LVOT (CD: 114 ± 28.4 mm2 vs. no CD: − 8 ± 80.0 mm2, p < 0.001), and circumference of device skirt and the LVOT (CD: 3.9 ± 2.08 mm vs. no CD: − 4.6 ± 5.24 mm, p < 0.001) between the two groups. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that an area difference of 77.7 mm2 and circumference difference of 0.91 mm at LVOT were associated with postoperative CD with specificities of 0.83, 0.78 and sensitivity of 1.0, 1.0, respectively. In the data obtained by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors, transient noise with non-stationary and non-Gaussian features occurs at a high rate. This often results in problems such as detector instability and the hiding and/or imitation of gravitational-wave signals. This transient noise has various characteristics in the time–frequency representation, which is considered to be associated with environmental and instrumental origins. Classification of transient noise can offer clues for exploring its origin and improving the performance of the detector. One approach for accomplishing this is supervised learning. However, in general, supervised learning requires annotation of the training data, and there are issues with ensuring objectivity in the classification and its corresponding new classes. By contrast, unsupervised learning can reduce the annotation work for the training data and ensure objectivity in the classification and its corresponding new classes. In this study, we propose an unsupervised learning architecture for the classification of transient noise that combines a variational autoencoder and invariant information clustering. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed architecture, we used the dataset (time–frequency two-dimensional spectrogram images and labels) of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) first observation run prepared by the Gravity Spy project. The classes provided by our proposed unsupervised learning architecture were consistent with the labels annotated by the Gravity Spy project, which manifests the potential for the existence of unrevealed classes. Purpose: This study aims to introduce a new handheld device application for noncontact and real-time measurements of the angle of a biopsy needle using augmented reality (AR) image tracking technology. Furthermore, this study discusses the methods used to optimize the related coordinate design for computed tomography (CT)-guided biopsy procedures. Methods: An in-house noncontact angle measurement application was developed using AR platform software. This application tracks the position and direction of a printed texture located on the handle of a biopsy needle. The needle direction was factorized into two directions: tilting or rolling. Tilting was defined following the tilting of the CT gantry so that rolling would match the angle measured in CT images. In this study, CT-guided tumor biopsies were performed using a conventional guiding method with a protractor. The true value of needle rolling was measured by CT imaging and was then compared to the rolling measurement provided by the application developed in the current study using a mobile phone. Results: This study enrolled 18 cases of tumor biopsy (five renal tumors, five lung tumors, four retroperitoneal tumors, one soft tissue tumor, one thyroid tumor, one mesentery tumor, and one bone tumor). The measurement accuracy was − 0.2°, which was the average difference between AR and CT, and the measurement precision was 2.0°, which was the standard deviation of the difference between AR and CT measurements. The coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.996. Conclusion: The noncontact needle measurement software using AR technology is sufficiently reliable for use in clinical settings. Purpose: To develop and assess the accuracy of a mixed reality (MR) needle guidance application on smartglasses. Materials and Methods: An MR needle guidance application on HoloLens2, without pre-procedural CT image reconstruction or import by manually matching the spatial and MR coordinate systems, was developed. First, the accuracy of the target locations in the image overlay at 63 points arranged on a 45 × 35 × 21 cm box and needle angles from 0° to 80°, placed using the MR application, was verified. The needle placement errors from 12 different entry points in a phantom by seven operators (four physicians and three non-physicians) were compared using a linear mixed model between the MR guidance and conventional methods using protractors. Results: The average errors of the target locations and needle angles placed using the MR application were 5.9 ± 2.6 mm and 2.3 ± 1.7°, respectively. The average needle insertion error using the MR guidance was slightly smaller compared to that using the conventional method (8.4 ± 4.0 mm vs. 9.6 ± 5.1 mm, p = 0.091), particularly in the out-of-plane approach (9.6 ± 3.5 mm vs. 12.3 ± 4.6 mm, p = 0.003). The procedural time was longer with MR guidance than with the conventional method (412 ± 134 s vs. 219 ± 66 s, p < 0.001). Conclusion: MR needle guidance without pre-procedural CT image import is feasible when matching coordinate systems, and the accuracy of needle insertion is slightly better than that of the conventional method. Glioblastoma is a glioma characterized by highly malignant features. Numerous studies conducted on the relationship between glioblastoma and the microenvironment have indicated the significance of tumor-associated macrophages/microglia (TAMs) in glioblastoma progression. Since interleukin (IL)-1β secreted by TAMs has been suggested to promote glioblastoma growth, we attempted to elucidate the detailed mechanisms of IL-1β in glioblastoma growth in this study. A phospho-receptor tyrosine kinase array and RNA-sequencing studies indicated that IL-1β induced the activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 and nuclear factor-kappa B signaling. Glioblastoma cells stimulated by IL-1β induced the production of IL-6 and CXCL8, which synergistically promoted glioblastoma growth via signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 and nuclear factor-kappa B signaling. By immunohistochemistry, IL-1β expression was seen on TAMs, especially in perinecrotic areas. These results suggest that IL-1β might be a useful target molecule for anti-glioblastoma therapy. The eruption of the Tambora volcano in 1815 was initiated by two precursory Plinian falls and formed two generations of pyroclastic density current (PDC) deposits. In this study, we found slight changes in phenocrysts (modal mineralogy, content, and size), bulk-rock and feldspar microlite chemical compositions, and bubble and microlite number densities through the stratigraphic position. Plinian fall units are characterized by a lower phenocryst abundance (avg. of 5.1%), smaller phenocryst size (avg. of 0.06 mm2), and higher silica content (bulk-rock, 58–58.5 wt.%). The PDC deposits are characterized by a relatively higher crystal abundance (avg. of 12.1%), larger phenocryst sizes (avg. of 0.13 mm2), and lower silica content (bulk-rock, 56.7–57.9 wt.%). Therefore, the deposit stratigraphy and analyses suggest that phenocryst stratification in the magma chamber was established prior to the 1815 eruption and was thus responsible for yielding a slight contrast in bulk compositions. Feldspar microlite moves toward slightly more albitic compositions from Plinian falls to the PDCs, suggesting a slight decrease in the initial melt temperature from the upper to the lower magma chamber portion. Because the Plinian eruptions extracted the hottest magma, the degree of supercooling became low, and consequently yielded microlite-poor juveniles. By contrast, the PDCs experienced a larger degree of supercooling because the temperature was relatively low, thus yielding microlite-rich juveniles. Moreover, such temperature stratification coupled with the evidence of homogeneous melt composition (58.5–58.9 wt.% SiO2) and the minor evidence of crystal mush (at most 27%) might suggest that the Tambora case is still in the early stage of magmatic evolution under cooling from the surrounding rocks. Mt. Fuji is an active basaltic volcano near the Tokyo metropolitan area; future eruptions could thus have serious nationwide impacts. To better understand recent volcanism at Fuji Volcano, we here clarify temporal variations of eruption rate and magma composition since 5.6 ka based on time-series volumetric and geochemical data of eruptive products in a new stratigraphic sequence. Volcanic activity during the studied period consisted of (i) the emission of many lava flows that formed a new volcanic edifice between 5.6 and 3.45 ka, (ii) a period dominated by explosive events both at the summit and on the flanks of the volcano between 3.45 and 2.25 ka, and (iii) a period dominated by flank fissure eruptions since 2.25 ka. The eruption rate (dense-rock equivalent, DRE) was 3.5 km3 DRE/kyr during the edifice-building period, decreased to 0.8 km3 DRE/kyr during the explosive period, and then increased to 2.0 km3 DRE/kyr since 1.5 ka. Erupted magmas were dominantly basaltic and geochemically similar through time, except for increased Sr contents and decreased Ca/Sr ratios during the explosive period. Similarly, the geochemical properties of the parental magmas did not change greatly, although the Sr contents and Ca/Sr ratios of magmas erupted during the explosive period reflect the delayed fractionation of plagioclase due to the increased water contents of the parental magmas at that time. Purpose: Augmented reality (AR) technology improves the learning process in interventional radiology. This study hypothesized that using AR to train for central venous access is superior to using ultrasound alone. Methods: This study used an AR central venous catheterization phantom with an internal jugular vein (IJV) and subclavian vein (SCV) made of resin body and soft tubing. Ten radiologists attempted to punctuate, using needle placement simulation, under three conditions (ultrasound-, augmented reality-, and ultrasound and AR-guided methods; US-only, AR-only, and US+AR, respectively) using a smart-glass device (HoloLens, Microsoft, Redmond, WA, USA). Subjective (anatomical understanding and self-confidence for procedure) and objective evaluations (optimized needle position and time) were recorded for each condition. Results: The subjective IJV evaluation showed no difference among the guiding methods (p = 0.26 and p = 0.07 for anatomical understanding and self-confidence for procedure, respectively). Conversely, there were significant improvements in subjective and objective evaluations for SCV using the AR-only and US+AR methods (p < 0.05) and US+AR method (p < 0.05), respectively. The AR-only method reduced the time required to fix the needle position to puncture the SCV (p < 0.05), but its objective evaluation did not improve compared with the US-only method (p = 0.20). Conclusion: Adding the AR-guided method to the US-guided method improved subjective and objective evaluations in the SVC procedure. The structural flexibility at three substitution sites in LaFeAsO enabled investigation of the relation between superconductivity and structural parameters over a wide range of crystal compositions. Substitutions of Nd for La, Sb or P for As, and F or H for O were performed. All these substitutions modify the local structural parameters, while the F/H-substitution also changes band filling. It was found that the superconducting transition temperature T c is strongly affected by the pnictogen height h Pn from the Fe-plane that controls the electron correlation strength and the size of the d xy hole Fermi surface (FS). With increasing h Pn , weak coupling BCS superconductivity switches to the strong coupling non-BCS one where electron correlations and the d xy hole FS may be important. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To assess the safety and feasibility of unilateral double femoral venous access including double sheath insertion via a single-hole method (two-in-one method) for adrenal venous sampling (AVS). Materials and methods: Two 5-Fr sheaths were percutaneously inserted into a single femoral vein for AVS in 324 patients. Two needles were inserted sequentially in tandem under ultrasound guidance; furthermore, two sheaths were individually inserted (two-in-two method) if both punctures were successfully achieved. In the presence of a single puncture, two sheaths were inserted through two guidewires and a temporarily inserted sheath (two-in-one method). This protocol was repeated until two sheaths were successfully inserted. Thus, two sheaths were inserted with the two-in-one method in 56 patients (17.3%) and two-in-two method in 268 patients (82.7%). Results: No significant differences in the technical success rates of AVS were observed (p = 0.067–0.647). Minor groin hematoma was observed more frequently in the two-in-one than in the two-in-two method (8.9% vs. 2.6%, p = 0.039). No major groin hematoma, deep venous thrombosis, or pulmonary embolization was observed. The mean number of needle puncture was 2.5 ± 1.3 and duration of inserting two sheaths 5.1 ± 3.9 min. Cementitious materials are commonly used to reinforce the bearing capacity of silty soils. However, there is very little data about how changes in arsenic (As) leaching from silty soils caused by the addition of cementitious materials. Therefore, batch leaching tests were conducted using As-bearing silty soil under different pH conditions. The pH was adjusted by changing the amount of slag cement added or the concentration of sodium hydroxide. This allows us to evaluate the effects of cement on As leaching. In addition, two different additives were applied to reduce As migration. The results show that high concentration of calcium ion (Ca2+) in leachates of soil-cement mixture has a significant effect in reducing the mobility of As even under hyperalkaline pH conditions. Arsenic immobilized by Ca2+ was observed in two patterns. The first mechanism was the help of Ca2+ to reduce the negative electrical potential on the surface of (hydr)oxide minerals under high pH conditions, thereby reducing the mobility of As by adsorption and coagulation of fresh precipitates of Fe and Al hydroxides. The second was the precipitation of calcium carbonate. This precipitate either directly adsorb/co-precipitate As or lower the concentration of strong competing ion, silica, both of which reduced the As mobility. When Ca- or Mg-based additive was added to the silty soil-cement mixture, As concentration in the leachate decreased. Amyloid β (Aβ) peptides produced from the amyloid precursor protein, a transmembrane protein, are neurotoxic and blocking the neurotoxicity may lead to prevention of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here we tested whether Aβ25-35-induced cognitive decline is rescued by treatment with dehydroeffusol, a phenanthrene isolated from Chinese medicine Juncus effusus. Dehydroeffusol (5 ~ 15 mg/kg body weight) was orally administered to mice for 6 days and Aβ25-35 (2 mM) was injected at the rate of 1 μl/min for 3 min into the lateral ventricle. Y-maze test was performed after dehydroeffusol administration for 12 days. Aβ25-35 impaired learning and memory in the test, while the impairment was dose-dependently rescued by dehydroeffusol administration. Purpose: To evaluate the radiopacity of contrast-loaded superabsorbent polymer microspheres (SAP-MS) under X-ray imaging.Materials and Methods: SAP-MS were suspended in contrast material (iodixanol) and the diameter change was assessed. The diameter of contrast-loaded SAP-MS in saline was measured sequentially. Radiography of the contrast-loaded SAP-MS was evaluated as radiopacity by contrast-to-noise ratio and visibility by multiple reader scoring. Under digital subtraction angiography, contrast-loaded SAP-MS were injected into a flow model. The flow speed was 1-10 cm/s, and images were acquired at 1-7.5 frames per second using a pulse width of 10-85 ms. Images were assessed by multiple reader scoring.Results: The diameter of SAP-MS increased to 4.0-5.0 times its original size for approximately 15 min. The diameter of contrast-loaded SAP-MS in saline further increased by 10-30% within several minutes and returned to the previous size. Radiopacity and visibility of contrast-loaded SAP-MS decreased in 30 min after mixing with saline. Visibility was better with slow flow speed and narrow pulse width.Conclusion: For effective observation, contrast-loaded SAP-MS should be kept in non-diluted contrast material until use. Mitochondrial iron is indispensable for heme biosynthesis and iron-sulfur cluster assembly. Several mitochondrial transmembrane proteins have been implicated to function in the biosynthesis of heme and iron-sulfur clusters by transporting reaction intermediates. However, several mitochondrial proteins related to iron metabolism remain uncharacterized. Here, we show that human sideroflexin 2 (SFXN2), a member of the SFXN protein family, is involved in mitochondrial iron metabolism. SFXN2 is an evolutionarily conserved protein that localized to mitochondria via its transmembrane domain. SFXN2-knockout (KO) cells had an increased mitochondrial iron content, which was associated with decreases in the heme content and heme-dependent enzyme activities. By contrast, the activities of iron-sulfur cluster-dependent enzymes were unchanged in SFXN2-KO cells. Moreover, abnormal iron metabolism impaired mitochondrial respiration in SFXN2-KO cells and accelerated iron-mediated death of these cells. Purpose: To compare the clinical and ongoing pregnancy rates between a protocol using oral dydrogesterone with human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG) for progestin-primed ovarian stimulation (PPOS) and the typical gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist regimen in women undergoing controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH).Methods: This was a prospective, controlled study of 251 women who underwent COH for in vitro fertilization between October 2016 and July 2017. The patients were allocated alternately into two groups: a dydrogesterone protocol (study group) and a GnRH antagonist protocol (control group). In study group, dydrogesterone (20 mg/day) plus HMG (150 or 225 IU) were administered simultaneously beginning on days 2 or 3 of the menstrual cycle. In both groups, all high-quality embryos were cryopreserved for later transfer. The primary outcome was the ongoing pregnancy rate at 12 weeks per frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) and the secondary outcome was the clinical pregnancy rate.Results: None of the patients experienced a premature luteinizing hormone surge. During the follow-up period, 397 FET cycles were completed. The ongoing pregnancy rates at 12 weeks were 40.0% in study group versus 38.1% in control group (absolute difference 1.9%; 95% CI − 6.83 to 17.2%). The clinical pregnancy rate in study group (52.8%) was also not inferior to that in control group (49.5%; absolute difference 3.3%; 95% CI − 4.02 to 20.2%).Conclusions: The clinical and ongoing pregnancy rates in study group were comparable to those in control group. Purpose: To assess the safety and effectiveness of polidocanol sclerotherapy combined with transarterial embolization using a liquid adhesive agent (n-butyl cyanoacrylate, NBCA) for treatment of extracranial arteriovenous malformations (AVMs).Materials and Methods: Twenty-three patients with symptomatic AVMs in the head and neck (6), upper (7) and lower extremity (10) with a mean age of 42 years (range 4-74) treated with polidocanol sclerotherapy were retrospectively assessed. AVMs were classified according to the angiographic morphology of the nidus. There were 2 type I, 6 type II, 6 type IIIa and 9 type IIIb. Arterial embolization using NBCA was performed to reduce arterial flow before sclerotherapy. Polidocanol mixed with contrast material or carbon dioxide was delivered by percutaneous direct puncture.Results: Treatment was successfully performed in all patients. In the mean follow-up period of 38 months, symptoms resolved or improved in 20/23 patients (87.0%). AVMs were devascularized 100% in 2 patients, 76-99% in 13, 50-75% in 7 and < 50% in 1. More than 50% devascularization was seen in 22 patients (95.6%). Two (8%) patients had complete remission, 17 (74%) had partial remission and 3 (13%) had no remission. There was no aggravation. Treatment was considered effective (complete and partial remission) in 20 patients (87.0%). Minor complications including localized arterial thrombosis (2) and spontaneously healing skin ulcer (1) were seen in 2 patients (8.7%). There were no major procedure-related complications.Conclusion: Polidocanol sclerotherapy combined with transarterial embolization using NBCA is safe and effective for treating extracranial AVMs with an acceptable risk of minor complications. To predict coral responses to future environmental changes at the reef scale, the coral polyp model (Nakamura et al. in Coral Reefs 32:779–794, 2013), which reconstructs coral responses to ocean acidification, flow conditions and other factors, was incorporated into a reef-scale three-dimensional hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model. This coupled reef-scale model was compared to observations from the Shiraho fringing reef, Ishigaki Island, Japan, where the model accurately reconstructed spatiotemporal variation in reef hydrodynamic and geochemical parameters. The simulated coral calcification rate exhibited high spatial variation, with lower calcification rates in the nearshore and stagnant water areas due to isolation of the inner reef at low tide, and higher rates on the offshore side of the inner reef flat. When water is stagnant, bottom shear stress is low at night and thus oxygen diffusion rate from ambient water to the inside of the coral polyp limits respiration rate. Thus, calcification decreases because of the link between respiration and calcification. A scenario analysis was conducted using the reef-scale model with several pCO2 and sea-level conditions based on IPCC (Climate change 2013: the physical science basis. Contribution of working group I to the fifth assessment report of the intergovernmental panel on climate change, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2013) scenarios. The simulation indicated that the coral calcification rate decreases with increasing pCO2. On the other hand, sea-level rise increases the calcification rate, particularly in the nearshore and the areas where water is stagnant at low tide under present conditions, as mass exchange, especially oxygen exchange at night, is enhanced between the corals and their ambient seawater due to the reduced stagnant period. When both pCO2 increase and sea-level rise occur concurrently, the calcification rate generally decreases due to the effects of ocean acidification. However, the calcification rate in some inner-reef areas will increase because the positive effects of sea-level rise offset the negative effects of ocean acidification, and total calcification rate will be positive only under the best-case scenario (RCP 2.6). Purpose: Pulse wave velocity (PWV), which measures vascular stiffness, is a powerful predictor of cardiovascular event. Treatment of aneurysms with endovascular prosthesis has been reported to increase PWV. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether an endoskeleton stent graft design has less effect on PWV than the exoskeleton stent graft design. Methods: Between July 2008 and September 2016, 74 patients underwent endovascular treatment of aortic arch aneurysm in our institution. PWV before and after surgery were compared between those who underwent treatment with Najuta, an endoskeleton stent graft ( n = 51), and those treated with other commercially available exoskeleton stent grafts ( n = 23). Results: Preoperative PWV (endoskeleton: 2004 ± 379.2 cm/s vs. exoskeleton: 2083 ± 454.5 cm/s, p = 0.47) was similar between the two groups. Factors that were associated with preoperative PWV were age ( r = 0.37, 95% CI 0.15-0.56, p = 0.002) and mean arterial pressure ( r = 0.53, 95% CI 0.34-0.68, p < 0.001). There was a significant increase in PWV in patients treated by exoskeleton stent grafts (before: 2083 ± 454.5 cm/s vs. after: 2305 ± 479.7 cm/s, p = 0.023) while endoskeleton stent graft showed no change in PWV (before: 2003 ± 379.2 vs. after: 2010 ± 521.1, p = 0.56). In a multivariate analysis, mean arterial pressure (coef 17.5, 95% CI 6.48-28.59, p = 0.002) and exoskeleton stent graft (coef 359.4, 95% CI 89.36-629.43, p = 0.010) were independently associated with PWV after surgery. Conclusions: Physiological changes after endovascular treatment should be considered including effect on vascular stiffness. Introduction: Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS, often called e-cigarettes) are nicotine delivery devices that heat nicotine into vapour that is inhaled, a process called 'vaping'. Use eclipsed nicotine-replacement therapy (NRT) in 2014 but ENDS role in smoking cessation remains controversial. Safety has not been proven and there have been reports to US poison centres regarding potential ENDS-related nicotine toxicity. A further concern is use of ENDS to vape recreational drugs, but there is limited data to substantiate this. The aim of this study was to report on ENDS use to vape recreational drugs in patrons of a South London nightclub where high prevalence of recreational drug use has previously been shown. Methods: A convenience sample of 101 participants was surveyed in March 2015 as part of a larger survey on drug use. Individuals were asked if they used ENDS to vape nicotine and/or other substances (and if so which substances). Results: Ninety (89.1 %) of respondents were male with median age of 28 years (IQR 23-34). Eighty (79.2 %) currently smoked cigarettes; 20 (19.8 %) currently used ENDS for nicotine. Six (5.9 %) reported using ENDS to take other substances: 2 for 'liquid cannabis' and 4 did not elaborate on the substance(s) used. Of these 6, 3 were using ENDS to vape nicotine and 3 had never used them for nicotine. Conclusion: 5.9 % of individuals in this sample reported using ENDS to vape substances other than nicotine. Further work is required in larger populations to determine how common this is, evaluate which agents are being vaped and to inform appropriate public education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this paper is to describe an outline of a proton therapy system in Nagoya Proton Therapy Center (NPTC). The NPTC has a synchrotron with a linac injector and three treatment rooms: two rooms are equipped with a gantry and the other one is equipped with a fixed horizontal beamline. One gantry treatment room has a pencil beam scanning treatment delivery nozzle. The other two treatment rooms have a passive scattering treatment delivery nozzle. In the scanning treatment delivery nozzle, an energy absorber and an aperture system to treat head and neck cancer have been equipped. In the passive treatment delivery nozzle, a multi-leaf collimator is equipped. We employ respiratory gating to treat lung and liver cancers for passive irradiation. The proton therapy system passed all acceptance tests. The first patient was treated on February 25, 2013, using passive scattering fixed beams. Respiratory gating is commonly used to treat lung and liver cancers in the passive scattering system. The MLCs are our first choice to limit the irradiation field. The use of the aperture for scanning irradiation reduced the lateral fall off by half or less. Two-pore domain K channels are widely expressed in many types of cells, and have various important functions, especially maintaining the resting membrane potential. In the previous report, we have confirmed the presence of several kinds of two-pore domain K channels in the periodontal ligament (PDL) fibroblasts. It is well known that dexamethasone (Dex) regulates the functions of various kinds of ion channels. In this work, we investigate if Dex affects the gene expressions of the two-pore domain K channels in the PDL fibroblasts. We also examined the effects of other steroid hormones on the K channels gene expression. The mRNA levels of two-pore domain K channels in human PDL fibroblasts were examined in the presence or absence of Dex by RT-PCR. The effects of other steroid hormones (aldosterone, estrogen, 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25-(OH)D], and retinoic acid) were also examined. Dex significantly induced the expression of TASK-1 and TWIK-2 in mRNA levels in both a dose- and a time-dependent manner. The stimulatory effects of Dex were completely abolished by a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist. 1,25-(OH)D also increased the TASK-1 mRNA levels but had no effect on TWIK-2 expression. Dex, one of the potent glucocorticoid, probably have a protective role against external stimuli by maintaining the membrane potential of PDL fibroblasts through the up-regulation of TASK-1 and TWIK-2 K channels. We show computationally that the current-voltage characteristics of the zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) with the even width exhibit remarkable current saturation behavior in spite of the absence of the bandgap. Mechanism of such current-saturation behavior can be understood to be originated from the symmetries of the wavefunctions corresponding to the edge states in ZGNR. We further demonstrate that the current-voltage characteristics of ZGNR can be drastically changed even by the presence of a single lattice vacancy, with the strong dependence on the position of the vacancy. We present a numerical study of the current-voltage characteristics in zigzag-edged graphene nano-ribbon (Z-GNR) devices. Our calculations employing the non-equilibrium Green’s function method and the density-functional tight-binding method show that the Z-GNR with transverse symmetry can exhibit remarkable current saturation behavior in spite of the absence of the bandgap. We further demonstrate that the saturation current can be controlled by the additional doping in the channel region. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and its ligands are involved in tumor growth, metastasis, angiogenesis, and resistance to chemotherapy. In the experiments described here using AGS gastric cancer cells, SN38 (the active metabolite of CPT-11) induced tyrosine phosphorylation of EGFR within 5 min, and this was followed by the induction of transcripts and/or proteins of heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor, amphiregulin, transforming growth factor-alpha, and interlukin-8 (IL-8). SN38 also activates nuclear factor-kappaB and activator protein-1, both of which are critical for the transcription of the IL-8 gene. However, the blocking of EGFR activation by gefitinib (Iressa, ZD1839), an EGFR-TKI (tyrosine kinase inhibitor), abrogates all the above reactions. The SN38-triggered mechanisms include the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the activation of protein kinase C (PKC), followed by metalloproteinase activation and the sequential ectodomain shedding of EGFR ligands. These findings suggest that EGF signaling is enhanced by CPT-11 and point to the potential benefit of the use of a combination of CPT-11 with gefitinib in the treatment of certain gastric cancers. Chausudake Volcano is representative of the active volcanoes in northeastern Japan, and has a record of many historical eruptions. Because its 16-ky eruptive history is well documented, Chausudake is well-suited for examining the temporal change of magma chamber processes and for assessing potential hazards. The activity of the Chausudake Volcano can be divided into six magmatic units (CH1–CH6). Most of its products have similar characteristics, but those from unit CH1 show wider variation. Most rocks are andesite and have plagioclase, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, and Fe–Ti oxides as phenocrysts, with or without olivine or quartz. Mafic inclusions, which are observed in most products, are basaltic andesites that have various combinations of the same phenocryst species. Petrographic features observed in host rocks and mafic inclusions, such as disequilibrium phenocrysts and resorbed textures, suggest magma mixing/co-mingling. Whole rock compositions of both host rocks and mafic inclusions show linear trends in variation diagrams, which suggest that the rocks are derived from the mixing/co-mingling between mafic and felsic end members. Bulk silica content of the mafic end-member magma is estimated to be ca. 52%, and contains Mg-rich olivine and An-rich plagioclase. The temperature of this end member is estimated to have been higher than 1,100 °C. Bulk silica content of the felsic end-member magma is estimated to be ~66%, and contains Mg-poor pyroxenes, An-poor plagioclase, and quartz phenocrysts, with a temperature of between 800 and 900 °C. Trace element compositions show that the end members have different origins, but have changed little over the entire 16-ky of activity. The mafic end-member magmas might come from a lower-crustal homogeneous, large magma chamber, whereas the felsic end-member magmas may be partial melts of crustal materials produced by the heat of the mafic end member. Felsic end-member magma may have accumulated in the middle crust before CH1 activity. The mixing ratio of the felsic to mafic end members was 0.5:0.5 to 0.4:0.6 for the CH1 unit, and ca. 0.4:0.6 for the other units. Considering that ca. 75% of the total volume of the eruptive products form the first unit, its wider compositional variation is attributed to more heterogeneous mixing ratios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pyroclastic flows from Unzen were generated by gravitational collapse of the growing lava dome. As soon as the parental lobe failed at the edge of the dome, spontaneous shattering of lava occurred and induced a gravity flow of blocks and finer debris. The flows had a overhanging, tongue-like head and cone- or rollershaped vortices expanding outward and upward. Most of the flows traveled from 1 to 3 km, but some flows reached more than 4 km, burning houses and killing people in the evacuated zone of Kita-kamikoba on the eastern foot of the volcano. The velocities of the flows ranged from 15 to 25 m/s on the gentle middle flank. Observations of the flows and their deposits suggest that they consisted of a dense basal avalanche and an overlying turbulent ash cloud. The basal avalanche swept down a topographic low and formed to tongue-like lobe having well-defined levees; it is presumed to have moved as a non-Newtonian fluid. The measured velocities and runout distances of the flows can be matched to a Bingham model for the basal avalanche by the addition of turbulent resistance. The rheologic model parameters for the 29 May flow are as follows: the density is 1300 kg/m, the yield strength is 850 Pa, the viscosity is 90 Pa s, and the thickness of the avalanche is 2 m. The ash cloud is interpreted as a turbulent mixing layer above the basal avalanche. The buoyant portions of the cloud produced ash-fall deposits, whereas the dense portions moved as a surge separated from the parental avalanche. The ash-cloud surges formed a wide devastated zone covered by very thin debris. The initial velocities of the 3 June surges, when they detached from avalanches, are determined by the runout distance and the angle of the energy-line slope. A comparison between the estimated velocities of the 3 June avalanches and the surges indicates that the surges that extended steep slopes along the avalanche path, detached directly from the turbulent heads of the avalanches. The over-running surge that reached Kita-Kamikoba had an estimated velocity higher than that of the avalanche; this farther-travelled surge is presumed to have been generated by collapse of a rising ash-cloud plume. The submarine eruption of a new small knoll, which was named 'Teishi knoll', off eastern Izu Peninsula behind the Izu-Mariana arc occurred in the evening of 13 July 1989. This is the first historic eruption of the Higashi-Izu monogenetic volcano group. The eruption of 13 July followed an earthquake swarm near Ito city starting on 30 June. There were subsequent volcanic tremors on 11 and 12 July, and the formation of the Teishi knoll on the 100 m deep insular shelf 4 km northeast of Ito city. There were five submarine explosions, which were characterized by intermittent domelike bulges of water and black tephra-jets, which occurred within 10 min on 13 July. Ejecta of the eruption was small in volume and composed of highly crystalline basalt scoria, highly vesiculated 'pumice', and lithic material. Petrographical features suggest that the 'pumice' was produced by vesiculation of reheated wet felsic tuff of an older formation. The Teishi knoll, before the eruption, was a circular dome, 450 m across and 25 m high, with steep sides and a flat summit. Considerations of submarine topographic change indicate the knoll was raised by sill-like intrusion of 10 m of magma beneath a 30 m thick sediment blanket. This shallow intrusion is assumed to have started on 11 July when volcanic tremors were observed for the first time, but there was no indications of violent interaction between wet host sediments and intruding magma. The submarine eruption of 13 July appears to have been Friggered by a major lowering of the magma-column. The basalt scoria, having crystal-contents of more than 60%, is assumed to be derived from the cooled plastic margin of the shallow intrusive body. However, glassy scoria, which would indicate the interaction between hot fluidal magma and external water, was not observed. A scenario for the 1989 submarine eruption is as follows. When rapid subsidence of the hot interior of the intrusive magma occurred, reduced pressure caused the implosion of cooled plastic magma, adjacent pressurized, hot host material, and wet sediment. Systematic analyses of the major-element chemistry of products of several eruptions during syn-and post-caldera stages of Izu-Oshima volcano were compiled. Comparisons of the products of large-scale eruptions in 1338?, 1421? and 1777-1778, of intermediate-scale eruptions in 1950-1951 and 1986, and of small-scale eruptions in 1954, 1964 and 1974 clearly show the existence of two types of magmas. One is 'plagioclase-controlled' and the other is 'differentiated' magma (multimineral-controlled); i.e. the bulk chemistry of the first magma type is controlled by plagioclase addition or removal, while that of the second type is controlled by fractionation of plagioclase, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, and titanomagnetite. Eruptions of Izu-Oshima volcano have occurred at the summit and along the flanks. Summit eruptions tap only plagioclase-controlled magmas, while flank eruptions supply both magma types. It is considered unlikely that both magma types would coexist in the same magma chamber based on the petrology. In the case of the 1986 eruption, the flank magma was isolated sometime in the past from the summit magma chamber or central conduit, and formed small magma pockets, where further differentiation occurred due to relatively rapid cooling. In a period of quiescence prior to the 1986 eruption, new magma was supplied to the summit magma chamber, and the summit eruption began. The dike intrusion or fracturing around the small magma pockets triggered the flank eruption of the differentiated magma. This model can be applied to the large-scale flank eruption in 1338(?) which erupted differentiated magmas. In 1421(?), the flank eruption tapped plagioclase-controlled magma. Purpose: To retrospectively evaluate the mid-term outcome of transarterial embolization (TAE) of renal artery pseudoaneurysm (RAP) including arteriovenous fistula (AVF) after partial nephrectomy screened by early postoperative contrast-enhanced CT (CE-CT). Materials and methods: Eighty-two patients (7.0%) who underwent TAE after partial nephrectomy were reviewed, from 1166 partial nephrectomies performed over 6 years. In 18 patients (22.0%), TAE was performed emergently on the median postoperative day (POD) seven. In the remaining patients, elective TAE was performed on the median POD six for RAP detected by early postoperative CE-CT or that emerged on follow-up CE-CT. Results: In one patient (1.2%), TAE was performed twice because one of two RAPs could not be embolized during the first TAE, being successfully embolized at the second TAE after readmission with hematuria. Otherwise, no bleeding recurrence or RAPs were observed during the median 1354 follow-up days. Thus, the primary and secondary success rates of TAE were 98.8% (81 of 82 patients) and 100% (82 of 82 patients), respectively. On angiography, the average number of lesions was 1.7 ± 0.9 and the average RAP size was 12.8 ± 6.0 mm. The shapes of the lesions varied: oval-round 60, oval-round + AVF 36, irregular + AVF 14, AVF 12, irregular 10, disruption 4, and extravasation 3. No major complications were observed. The median inpatient days after TAE were two. No estimated glomerular filtration rate deterioration was observed (64.6 ± 18.6 vs. 64.2 ± 18.4 mL/min/1.73 m2, p = 0.902). Carotenoid production in some non-phototropic bacteria occurs in a light-dependent manner to protect cells from photo-oxidants. Knowledge regarding the transcriptional regulator involved in the light-dependent production of carotenoids of non-phototrophic bacteria has been mainly confined to coenzyme B12-based photo-sensitive regulator CarH/LitR family proteins belonging to a MerR family transcriptional regulator. In this study, we found that bacteria belonging to Micrococcales and Corynebacteriales exhibit light-dependent carotenoid-like pigment production including an amino acid-producer Corynebacterium glutamicum AJ1511. CrtR is a putative MarR family transcriptional regulator located in the divergent region of a carotenoid biosynthesis gene cluster in the genome of those bacteria. A null mutant for crtR of C. glutamicum AJ1511 exhibited constitutive production of carotenoids independent of light. A complemented strain of the crtR mutant produced carotenoids in a light-dependent manner. Transcriptional analysis revealed that the expression of carotenoid biosynthesis genes is regulated in a light-dependent manner in the wild type, while the transcription was upregulated in the crtR mutant irrespective of light. In vitro experiments demonstrated that a recombinant CrtR protein binds to the specific sequences within the intergenic region of crtR and crtE, which corresponds to −58 to −7 for crtE, and +26 to −28 for crtR with respect to the transcriptional start site, and serves as a repressor for crtE transcription directed by RNA polymerase containing SigA. Taken together, the results indicate that CrtR light-dependently controls the expression of the carotenoid gene cluster in C. glutamicum and probably closely related Actinobacteria. Long-term evaluations of hazard and risk related to volcanoes rely on extrapolations from volcano histories, including the uniformity of their eruption rates. We calculated volumetric magma eruption rates, compiled from quantitative eruption histories of 29 Japanese Quaternary volcanoes, and analyzed them with respect to durations spanning 101-105 years. Calculated eruption rates vary greatly (101-10−4 km3 dense-rock equivalent/1000 years) between individual volcanoes. Although large basaltic stratovolcanoes tend to have high eruption rates and relatively constant repose intervals, these cases are not representative of the various types of volcanoes in Japan. At many Japanese volcanoes, eruption rates are not constant through time, but increase, decrease, or fluctuate. Therefore, it is important to predict whether eruption rates will increase or decrease for long-term risk assessment. Several temporal co-variations of eruption rate and magmatic evolution suggest that there are connections between them. In some cases, magma supply rates increased in response to changing magma-generation processes. We estimate the total mass of ash fall deposits for individual eruptions of Sakurajima Volcano, southwest Japan based on distribution maps of the tephra fallout. Five ash-sampling campaigns were performed between 2011 and 2015, during which time Sakurajima continued to emit ash from frequent Vulcanian explosions. During each survey, between 29 and 53 ash samplers were installed in a zone 2.2-43 km downwind of the source crater. Total masses of erupted tephra were estimated using several empirical methods based on the relationship between the area surrounded by a given isopleth and the thickness of ash fall within each isopleth. We obtained 70-40,520 t (4.7 × 10−8-2.7 × 10−5-km3 DRE) as the minimum estimated mass of erupted materials for each eruption period. The minimum erupted mass of tephra produced during the recorded events was calculated as being 890-5140 t (5.9 × 10−7-3.6 × 10−6-km3 DRE). This calculation was based on the total mass of tephra collected during any one eruptive period and the number of eruptions during that period. These values may thus also include the contribution of continuous weak ash emissions before and after prominent eruptions. We analyzed the meteorological effects on ash fall distribution patterns and concluded that the width of distribution area of an ash fall is strongly controlled by the near-ground wind speed. The direction of the isopleth axis for larger masses is affected by the local wind direction at ground level. Furthermore, the wind direction influences the direction of the isopleth axes more at higher altitude. While a second maximum of ash fall can appear, the influence of rain might only affect the finer particles in distal areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
