Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common renal malignant tumour. We evaluated the potential value and dose reduction of virtual non-contrast (VNC) images and virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs) from dual-layer spectral CT (DL-CT) in the diagnosis of RCC. Results: Sixty-two patients with pathologically confirmed RCC who underwent contrast-enhanced DL-CT were retrospectively analysed. For the comparison between true non-contrast (TNC) and VNC images of the excretory phase, the attenuation, image noise, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and subjective image quality of tumours and different abdominal organs and tissues were evaluated. To compare corticomedullary phase images and low keV VMIs (40 to 100 keV) from the nephrographic phase, the attenuation, image noise, SNR and subjective lesion visibility of the tumours and renal arteries were evaluated. For the tumours, significant differences were not observed in attenuation, noise or SNR between TNC and VNC images (p > 0.05). For the abdominal organs and tissues, except for fat, the difference in attenuation was 100% within 15 HU and 96.78% within 10 HU. The subjective image quality of TNC and VNC images was equivalent (p > 0.05). The attenuation of lesions in 40 keV VMIs and renal arteries in 60 keV VMIs were similar to those in the corticomedullary images (p > 0.05). The subjective lesion visibility in low keV VMIs is slightly lower than that in the corticomedullary images (p < 0.05). Using VNC and VMIs instead of TNC and corticomedullary phase images could decrease the radiation dose by 50.5%. Conclusion: VNC images and VMIs acquired from DL-CT can maintain good image quality and decrease the radiation dose for diagnosis of RCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the study was to investigate the application of virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs) in reducing metal artifacts in rabbit VX2 liver cancer models treated with microwave ablation (MWA) therapy. A total of 31 VX2 liver cancer models that accepted CT-guided percutaneous microwave ablation were analyzed. Conventional images (CIs) with the most severe metallic artifacts and their corresponding energy levels from 40 to 200 keV with 10 keV increment of VMIs were reconstructed for further analysis. Objective image analysis was assessed by recording the attenuation (HU) and standard deviation of the most severe hyper/hypodense artifacts as well as artifact-impaired liver parenchyma tissue. Two radiologists visually evaluated the extent of artifact reduction, assessed data obtained by a diagnostic evaluation of liver tissues, and appraised the appearance of new artifacts according to the grade score. Statistical analysis was performed to compare the difference between CIs and each energy level of VMIs. For subjective assessment, reductions in hyperdense and hypodense artifacts were observed at 170–200 keV and 160–200 keV, respectively. The outcomes of the diagnostic evaluation of adjacent liver tissue were statistically higher at 140–200 keV for VMIs than for CIs. In terms of objective evaluation results, VMIs at 90–200 keV reduced the corrected attenuation of hyperdense and of artifact-impaired liver parenchyma compared with CIs (P < 0.001). When VMIs at 80–200 keV decreased the hypodense artifacts (P < 0.001). Therefore, we concluded that VMIs at 170–200 keV can obviously decrease the microwave ablation needle-related metal artifacts objectively and subjectively in rabbit VX2 liver cancer models. Ionic liquids (ILs) are solvents composed of ions, containing a large asymmetric cation with an anion. With increasing and widespread applications, the toxic effects of ILs have been considerable in recent years. This study explained the effects of the new functional ionic liquids [N4444] bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfonyl succinate (AOT) on rice seedling and the growth of rhizobacteria. The rice seeds pretreated by [N4444] AOT revealed that it exhibited a significant negative impact on rice seedlings. The inhibition of rice growth increased with increasing concentration. When the concentration of [N4444] AOT increased to 0.25 and 0.5 mL L−1, the germination potential decreased by 40.0% and 86.3%, respectively, compared with the control. The germination potential and germination rate of rice were reduced, and the stress effect of ionic liquid on the root parts was higher than the aerial parts. The biomass of rice seedlings was decreased by 34.8 to 91.2%. Iodinic propane staining showed that by increasing concentration, the root cell cytomembrane damage level was increased and also changed the cell shapes, especially under 0.25 mg L−1 concentration stress. However, rhizobacteria of rice showed strong [N4444] AOT-resistant characteristics when the concentration was reached to 120 mg L−1. The ILs even more promoted the growth of Enterobacter sp. To investigate the role of miR-128-3p and MAPK14 in the dexmedetomidine treatment of acute lung injury in septic mice. SPF C57BL/6 mice were divided into 8 groups. The pathological changes and wet/dry weight ratio (W/D), PaO2, PaCO2, MDA, SOD and MPO levels in lung tissue and the serum levels of inflammation factors were observed. Dual luciferase reporter assay was used to detect the targeting relationship of miR-128-3p and MAPK14, and qPCR and WB were used to detect the expression of miR-128-3p and MAPK14. Compared with the Normal group, other groups had lower MDA, MPO, inflammatory factors levels and the expression level of MAPK14, while the content of SOD and the expression level of miR-128-3p was significantly decreased (all p < 0.05). Compared with the Model group, the contents of MDA, MPO, inflammatory factors in the DEX group and miR-128-3p mimic group were significantly decreased, and the content SOD was significantly increased, however, opposite results were occurred in oe-MAPK14 group (all p < 0.05). Compared with the DEX group, all the indicators in miR-128-3p mimic+DEX group showed significant improvement (all p < 0.05). Compared with the miR-128-3p mimic group, all the indicators were deteriorated in the miR-128-3p mimic+oe-MAPK14 group (all p < 0.05). The combination of DEX and oe-MAPK14 blocked the protective effect of dexmedetomidine on acute lung injury in septic mice. miR-128-3p can further enhance the protective effect of dexmedetomidine on acute lung injury in septic mice by targeting and inhibiting MAPK14 expression. To explore the effects of different degrees of hypothermia on brain tissue apoptosis after cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Cardiac arrest for 5 min induced by asphyxia method was used to create CPR model. 30 SD rats were randomly divided into control group (normothermia), 33 °C hypothermia group and 30 °C hypothermia group with ten rats in each. Rats in control group received routine treatment at 25 °C room temperature after CPR; Rats in mild hypothermia and moderate hypothermia groups were given hypothermia treatment 0.5 h after CPR. Brain tissue in all groups was taken 24 h after CPR, and immunohistochemistry was used to detect the caspase-3 in cerebral cortex and glial fiber acidic protein (GFAP) expression in astrocyte. Western blotting was used to detect Bcl-2 and Bax protein expression, and histopathological change was observed in brain tissue. Compare to the control group, caspase-3 expression in cerebral neurons in hypothermia group was significantly decreased ( p<0.01), which was significantly lower in 30 °C group than that in 33 °C group ( p > 0.05); GFAP level in hypothermia groups was significantly increased ( p < 0.01), which was higher in 30 °C hypothermia group than that in 33 °C hypothermia group ( p < 0.05); Bcl-2 expression level in hypothermia group was significantly increased ( p < 0.01), which was higher in 30 °C hypothermia group than that in 33 °C hypothermia group ( p < 0.05); The level of Bax had no significant difference among the three groups. Hypothermia-regulated GFAP expression by decreasing caspase-3 expression and increasing Bcl-2 expression to promote brain cell signaling transduction, and further inhibited cell apoptosis and reduced brain injury. A convenient method to evaluate bone cement distribution following vertebral augmentation is lacking, and therefore so is our understanding of the optimal distribution. To address these questions, we conducted a retrospective study using data from patients with a single-segment vertebral fracture who were treated with vertebral augmentation at our two hospitals. Five evaluation methods based on X-ray film were compared to determine the best evaluation method and the optimal cement distribution. Of the 263 patients included, 49 (18.63%) experienced re-collapse of treated vertebrae and 119 (45.25%) experienced new fractures during follow-up. A 12-score evaluation method (kappa value = 0.652) showed the largest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for predicting new fractures (0.591) or re-collapse (0.933). In linear regression with the 12-score method, the bone cement distribution showed a negative correlation with the re-collapse of treated vertebra, but it showed a weak correlation with new fracture. The two prediction curves intersected at a score of 10. We conclude that an X-ray-based method for evaluation of bone cement distribution can be convenient and practical, and it can reliably predict risk of new fracture and re-collapse.
