Presents information on a study that determined the changes in energy content and biomass quality in terms of dry weight and of carbon, nitrogen, and energy content of eggs and larvae of the Senegal sole, Solea Senegalensis Kaup that were reared from fertilization until the end of metamorphosis. The genus Brachionus has been the main subject of studies reported in about 1000 papers published since 1950. About three-fourths of these deal with Brachionus plicatilis and B. rotundiformis and are mainlyrelated to their use as prey for aquatic organisms. Also abundant, but to a lesser extent, are studies on B. calyciflorus, many of which are concerned with aquatic ecotoxicology. These studies constitute aninteresting interaction between fundamental and applied research. For example, advances in fundamental biology have been applied to improve the production of rotifer biomass. Alternatively, new perspectivesin fundamental research on rotifers have emerged while solving technical and biological problems related to the rearing of aquatic animallarvae. This review describes some aspects that have shown a significant advance due to such interaction between fundamental and applied research on rotifers, e.g. growth conditions, biochemical compositionand morphotypes. The effect of temperature on the chemical composition (carbon, nitrogen and ash content) and the energy content of the rotifers Brachionus plicatilis and Brachionus rotundiformis (formerly B. plicatilis L- and S-type respectively) was examined in experimental populations. Dry weight and carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen content remained practically unchanged in the 20--35 deg.C range in B. rotundiformis, while in B. plicatilis the dry weight decreased slightly with increasing temperature from 15 to 35 deg.C. Nevertheless, the major source of variation was the fecundity status of the populations. On the other hand, B.rotundiformis showed higher energy content (joules per mg of dry matter) than B. plicatilis. This difference in energy content was due tothe different ash content because the organic matter of both specieshad the same energy content, as well as the same basic biomass composition.
