Opinion Statement: Non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs) are the most common malignancy and surgical excision is considered treatment of choice for the majority of cases. However, surgery can be very extensive in cases of large, multiple, or cosmetic-sensitive tumors located on areas such as scalp and face or genital region, leading to significant functional and cosmetic deficit. Aminolaevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) has emerged as a widely used approach in a variety of skin diseases, demonstrating remarkable efficacy in treatment of actinic keratosis, Bowen disease and basal cell carcinoma. Besides, when employed as a preoperative intervention, ALA-PDT effectively reduces tumor size and minimizes subsequent local surgical morbidity. With its minimally invasive nature and proven effectiveness, ALA-PDT holds significant promise as a neoadjuvant treatment option for NMSCs. In cases where the tumor is large, invasive, multiple, or located in cosmetically and functionally sensitive areas, or when considering patient factors such as age, comorbidity, willingness to undergo surgery, and post-operative quality-of-life, surgical intervention or radiotherapy alone may be impracticable or unacceptable. In such scenarios, neoadjuvant ALA-PDT can offer remarkable outcomes. In order to further ensure the maximum benefit of patients from neoadjuvant PDT, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and whole-process management may be in need. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Opinion statement: Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is a globally prevalent skin disease, with basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma accounting for 99% of NMSC cases. While surgical excision is the most common approach, numerous non-surgical therapies have rapidly advanced in recent years. In cases of low-risk NMSC, alongside surgical excision, priority should be given to physical therapy and photodynamic therapy. Physical therapy modalities, exemplified by electrodessication and curettage, emerge as safe and efficacious alternatives. In juxtaposition, photodynamic therapy, albeit relatively more costly, assumes preference for patients exhibiting heightened cosmetic concerns owing to the scarring risks inherent to physical therapy and surgical excision. Notably, the combination of curettage and photodynamic therapy has exhibited remarkable efficacy in the treatment of nodular basal cell carcinoma. Additionally, for elderly patients who may be intolerant to stimulation, modified photodynamic therapy offers an almost painless option. When surgery is unavoidable, photodynamic therapy can be a valuable adjunct, allowing for a more conservative surgical approach, either before or after the procedure. Radiotherapy holds a prominent role in comprehensive treatment strategies, especially for patients ineligible for surgical intervention or those with lesions precluding further surgical measures. In cases of NMSC exhibiting perineural invasion or lymphovascular involvement, adjunctive radiotherapy is advised; however, potential adverse effects necessitate careful consideration. For advanced NMSC cases where surgery and physical therapy fall short, immunotherapy provide viable solutions. Systemic therapy employing Hedgehog pathway inhibitors can be considered for patients with distant metastatic basal cell carcinoma, despite its low incidence, or individuals with locally advanced lesions who are not surgical candidates, or those encountering recurrences after resection and radiotherapy. However, close monitoring of disease progression and adverse reactions is crucial. In this evolving landscape of NMSC treatment, personalized and multidisciplinary approaches are key, ensuring optimal outcomes while prioritizing patient safety and satisfaction. Ecological security is the state achieved once an ecosystem maintains its stability under external stress. The Yellow River Basin (YRB) is the largest river basin in northwest and north China and an important area for grain and energy production. The assessment and attribution of ecological security in the YRB are important for protecting the natural environment and ensuring sustainable development. Here, the ecological security of the YRB was assessed by the ecological security index (ESI), a comprehensive index based on the oxygen cycle, and its drivers were attributed to climate change, human activities, vegetation, and soil factors. The spatial pattern of ecological security in the YRB showed high heterogeneity. Ecological insecurity occurred mainly in the middle reaches and regions where the major stream of the Yellow River passes through. The ESI decreased at a rate of − 0.82/year since 2000, which indicated the natural environment continued to be improved in the YRB. Climate change dominated the evolution of ecological security in the upper reaches. The level of ecological security has been improved in the middle reaches after a series of ecological restoration projects conducted. With higher intensity of industrial activity, human activities played a more critical role in ecological security in the lower reaches. Our results suggested that government and local people need to adopt different strategies and actions based on the dominant drivers in the upper, middle, and lower reaches to ensure protection of the natural environment and achieve sustainable development targets. Extreme snow loads can collapse roofs. This load is calculated based on the ground snow load (that is, the snow water equivalent on the ground). However, snow water equivalent (SWE) measurements are unavailable for most sites, while the ground snow depth is frequently measured and recorded. A new simple practical algorithm was proposed in this study to evaluate the SWE by utilizing ground snow depth, precipitation data, wind speed, and air temperature. For the evaluation, the precipitation was classified as snowfall or rainfall according to the air temperature, the snowfall or rainfall was then corrected for measurement error that is mainly caused by wind-induced undercatch, and the effect of snow water loss was considered. The developed algorithm was applied and validated using data from 57 meteorological stations located in the northeastern region of China. The annual maximum SWE obtained based on the proposed algorithm was compared with that obtained from the actual SWE measurements. The return period values of the annual maximum ground snow load were estimated and compared to those obtained according to the procedure suggested by the Chinese structural design code. The comparison indicated that the use of the proposed algorithm leads to a good estimated SWE or ground snow load. For robotic polishing of curved surfaces with compliant polishing disc, it is critical to accurately control the tilt angle of the polishing disc and normal contact force between the disc and the workpiece surface simultaneously. As conventional industrial robots lack force control capability, a 3-DOF two-rotational-one-translational (2R1T) force-controlled end-effector based on the 3-PPS parallel mechanism is developed for robotic polishing. During the polishing process, the changes of the tilt angle of the end-effector's moving platform will result in displacement variations of the contact point, owing to the inherent parasitic motion of the end-effector module, the geometry of the disc, and the compliance of the disc. Without proper compensation of the displacement variation, the control accuracy of contact force will be significantly decreased. To tackle this problem, a parametric model is established to predict the contact point variation. A hybrid orientation/force control architecture with compensation of the contact point variation is proposed. Based on the kinematic analysis, orientation control is achieved through a position controller. The force tracking control considering the uncertainty of the environment is achieved through an admittance controller. By introducing the contact point compensation model into the control architecture, the control accuracy of the contact force is significantly improved. The proposed control architecture is evaluated on a macro-mini manipulator consisting of a 6-DOF industrial robot and the 2R1T force-controlled end-effector. The experimental results indicate that the orientation control is accurate and the mean force errors with three different kinds of tilt angle references are reduced by 78.9 % , 81.1 % and 72.3 % compared to the conventional hybrid orientation/force control, respectively, which validate the effectiveness of the proposed control method. The force-controlled end-effectors for industrial robots usually face the problems of low output force, poor control accuracy, or slow dynamic response. This paper presents a pneumoelectric force-controlled end-effector (PFE) for industrial robots to perform continuous contact operations. The end-effector possesses the advantages of both the pneumatic drive having large force-mass ratio and the electric direct drive having high force control accuracy and fast dynamic response. Through dynamic modeling and analyses, a force coordination control method based on impedance control is proposed for the PFE. The pneumatic cylinder is actuated by a semi-closed loop, while the voice coil motor (VCM) is controlled through a closed loop to improve the output force, accuracy, and dynamics. Impedance controller is utilized to reduce the impact caused by the critical contact between the tool and workpiece. Simulation analyses show that the force-mass ratio has increased, while the friction influence and overshoot has been reduced. In addition, prototype experiments verify the effectiveness of force control method and demonstrate that the PFE is able to achieve good performances such as control accuracy, step response, and dynamic bandwidth. Compared with the traditional pneumatic end-effector, the force control hysteresis is almost reduced from 41.9 to 0% without apparent creeping phenomenon. The rise time of the step response also decreases from 435 to 6.5 ms, and the bandwidth reaches 47 Hz. Floating deep mixed column is an effective ground improvement method to treat soft soils. However, the traditional settlement estimation formula under the assumption of equal strain is not consistent with the actual situation. To investigate the settlement behavior of floating columns, a series of laboratory model tests and finite element analyses were carried out. The results reveal that the degree of consolidation of ground improved by floating columns is 10–20% lower than that of end-bearing columns, and the column–soil ratio of floating column treated ground is between 4 and 8. The settlement of improved layer calculated by equal strain assumption is lower than the measured settlement and the error between them is affected by load intensity, depth improvement ratio, and column–soil modulus ratio of floating columns. A simplified method for the settlement calculation of ground improved by floating columns has been proposed considering influence coefficients. Fault is one of the common geological structures in coal mining, the concentrated development of several faults has changed the movement form and structure shape of overlying strata, which caused the instability of overburden strata easily and induced dynamic disasters. Taking the 10,416 working face of Yangliu coal mine as the research object, the plane numerical model of overburden structure with two faults (a reverse fault and a normal fault) was established by using UDEC numerical simulation software. The dip angle of normal fault is 50°, the dip angle of normal fault is 70°. The distances between the two faults are 30 m, 60 m, 90 m. The evolution characteristics of overburden structure in working face are studied respectively from hanging wall to footwall and from footwall to hanging wall, and the dynamic hazard law induced by the activation of different faults is analyzed. The results prove that: when the working face is mined from footwall to hanging wall, the overlying strata on the working surface form "trapezoid" and "triangle" structures. When the working face is mined from hanging wall to footwall, the overlying strata form the structure of "inverted trapezoid" and "inverted triangle". The low-level fault activation caused by overburden movement is easy to induce dynamic response. The gastrointestinal tract is the site of nutrient digestion and absorption and is also colonized by diverse, highly mutualistic microbes. The intestinal microbiota has diverse effects on the development and function of the gut-specific immune system, and provides some protection from infectious pathogens. However, interactions between intestinal immunity and microorganisms are very complex, and recent studies have revealed that this intimate crosstalk may depend on the production and sensing abilities of multiple bioactive small molecule metabolites originating from direct produced by the gut microbiota or by the metabolism of dietary components. Here, we review the interplay between the host immune system and the microbiota, how commensal bacteria regulate the production of metabolites, and how these microbiota-derived products influence the function of several major innate and adaptive immune cells involved in modulating host immune homeostasis. The influence of winter and summer land-sea surface thermal contrast on blocking for 1948-2013 is investigated using observations and the coupled model intercomparison project outputs. The land-sea index (LSI) is defined to measure the changes of zonal asymmetric thermal forcing under global warming. The summer LSI shows a slower increasing trend than winter during this period. For the positive of summer LSI, the EP flux convergence induced by the land-sea thermal forcing in the high latitude becomes weaker than normal, which induces positive anomaly of zonal-mean westerly and double-jet structure. Based on the quasiresonance amplification mechanism, the narrow and reduced westerly tunnel between two jet centers provides a favor environment for more frequent blocking. Composite analysis demonstrates that summer blocking shows an increasing trend of event numbers and a decreasing trend of durations. The numbers of the short-lived blocking persisting for 5-9 days significantly increases and the numbers of the long-lived blocking persisting for longer than 10 days has a weak increase than that in negative phase of summer LSI. The increasing transient wave activities induced by summer LSI is responsible for the decreasing duration of blockings. The increasing blocking due to summer LSI can further strengthen the continent warming and increase the summer LSI, which forms a positive feedback. The opposite dynamical effect of LSI on summer and winter blocking are discussed and found that the LSI-blocking negative feedback partially reduces the influence of the above positive feedback and induce the weak summer warming rate. East Asian dust (EAD) exerts considerable impacts on the energy balance and climate/climate change of the earth system through its influence on solar and terrestrial radiation, cloud properties, and precipitation efficiency. Providing an accurate description of the life cycle and climate effects of EAD is therefore critical to better understanding of climate change and socioeconomic development in East Asia and even worldwide. Dust modeling has undergone substantial development since the late 1990s, associated with improved understanding of the role of EAD in the earth system. Here, we review the achievements and progress made in recent decades in terms of dust modeling research, including dust emissions, long-range transport, radiative forcing (RF), and climate effects of dust particles over East Asia. Numerous efforts in dust/EAD modeling have been directed towards furnishing more sophisticated physical and chemical processes into the models on higher spatial resolutions. Meanwhile, more systematic observations and more advanced retrieval methods for instruments that address EAD related science issues have made it possible to evaluate model results and quantify the role of EAD in the earth system, and to further reduce the uncertainties in EAD simulations. Though much progress has been made, large discrepancies and knowledge gaps still exist among EAD simulations. Cotton aphid ( Aphis gossypii) is considered as one of the most important agriculture pest for the cotton production. However, it is generally labor-intensive and time-consuming to obtain some information of Cotton aphid with conventional methods through direct measurement by sampling in the field. This study explores the potential of using a new method to obtain information of the Cotton aphid rapidly . In our study, the cotton canopy spectral indices ( NDVI, VI_ 2, REDrefc, NIRrefc) and chlorophyll concentration, obtained from hand-held high spectrometer GreenSeeker and chlorophyll meter SPAD-502 and Cotton aphid amount derived from the artificial field-based survey were used to uncover the relationship between Cotton aphid amount and canopy spectral index and SPAD value of the cotton in city of Shihezi, China. The results showed that NDVI and NIRrefc were negatively related to Cotton aphid amount. VI_2 content had a significant and positive relationship with its amount. The non-linear three cubic models with alate Aphid amount as independent variables have been established between VI_2 value and alatae Aphid amount, which could explain 92.37 % of VI_2 value variance. SPAD values were also significantly and negatively correlated to the Aphid amount. The non-linear logarithm model with wingless Aphid amount as independent variables was the best for uncovering the relationship between SPAD value and wingless Aphid amount, which could explain 85.48 % of SPAD value variance. The results demonstrate the establishment of the function model provides a theoretical basis and techniques for indirect and rapid monitoring and management of Cotton aphid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tuberculosis remains second only to HIV/AIDS as the leading cause of mortality worldwide due to a single infectious agent. Despite chemotherapy, the global tuberculosis epidemic has intensified because of HIV co-infection, the lack of an effective vaccine and the emergence of multi-drug-resistant bacteria. Alternative host-directed strategies could be exploited to improve treatment efficacy and outcome, contain drug-resistant strains and reduce disease severity and mortality. The innate inflammatory response elicited by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) represents a logical host target. Here we demonstrate that interleukin-1 (IL-1) confers host resistance through the induction of eicosanoids that limit excessive type I interferon (IFN) production and foster bacterial containment. We further show that, in infected mice and patients, reduced IL-1 responses and/or excessive type I IFN induction are linked to an eicosanoid imbalance associated with disease exacerbation. Host-directed immunotherapy with clinically approved drugs that augment prostaglandin E2 levels in these settings prevented acute mortality of Mtb-infected mice. Thus, IL-1 and type I IFNs represent two major counter-regulatory classes of inflammatory cytokines that control the outcome of Mtb infection and are functionally linked via eicosanoids. Our findings establish proof of concept for host-directed treatment strategies that manipulate the host eicosanoid network and represent feasible alternatives to conventional chemotherapy. Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection which causes tremendous morbidity and mortality worldwide. Clinical presentation of TB patients is very diverse and disease heterogeneity is associated with changes in biomarker signatures. Here, we compared at the molecular level the extent of individual inflammatory perturbation of plasma protein and lipid mediators associated with TB in patients in China versus India. We performed a cross-sectional study analyzing the overall degree of inflammatory perturbation in treatment-naïve pulmonary TB patients and uninfected individuals from India (TB: n = 97, healthy: n = 20) and China (TB: n = 100, healthy: n = 11). We employed the molecular degree of perturbation (MDP) adapted to plasma biomarkers to examine the overall changes in inflammation between these countries. M. tuberculosis infection caused a significant degree of molecular perturbation in patients from both countries, with higher perturbation detected in India. Interestingly, there were differences in biomarker perturbation patterns and the overall degree of inflammation. Patients with severe TB exhibited increased MDP values and Indian patients with this condition exhibited even higher degree of perturbation compared to Chinese patients. Network analyses identified IFN-α, IFN-β, IL-1RI and TNF-α as combined biomarkers that account for the overall molecular perturbation in the entire study population. Our results delineate the magnitude of the systemic inflammatory perturbation in pulmonary TB and reveal qualitative changes in inflammatory profiles between two countries with high disease prevalence.
