Introduction: Bowel wall thickening is commonly observed in liver cirrhosis, but few studies have explored its impact on the long-term outcomes of patients with cirrhosis. Methods: Overall, 118 patients with decompensated cirrhosis were retrospectively enrolled, in whom maximum wall thickness of small bowel, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, and rectum could be measured in computed tomography (CT) images. X-tile software was employed to determine the best cut-off values of each segment of bowel wall thickness for predicting the risk of further decompensation and death. Cumulative rates of further decompensation and death were calculated by Nelson–Aalen cumulative risk curve analyses. Predictors of further decompensation and death were evaluated by competing risk analyses. Sub-distribution hazard ratios (sHRs) were calculated. Results: Cumulative rates of further decompensation were significantly higher in patients with wall thickness of ascending colon ≥ 11.7 mm (P = 0.014), transverse colon ≥ 3.2 mm (P = 0.043), descending colon ≥ 9.8 mm (P = 0.035), and rectum ≥ 7.2 mm (P = 0.045), but not those with wall thickness of small bowel ≥ 8.5 mm (P = 0.312) or sigmoid colon ≥ 7.1 mm (P = 0.237). Wall thickness of ascending colon ≥ 11.7 mm (sHR = 1.70, P = 0.030), transverse colon ≥ 3.2 mm (sHR = 2.15, P = 0.038), and rectum ≥ 7.2 mm (sHR = 2.38, P = 0.045) were independent predictors of further decompensation, but not wall thickness of small bowel ≥ 8.5 mm (sHR = 1.19, P = 0.490), descending colon ≥ 9.8 mm (sHR = 1.53, P = 0.093) or sigmoid colon ≥ 7.1 mm (sHR = 0.63, P = 0.076). Small bowel, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, and rectum wall thickness were not significantly associated with death. Liver diseases cause a significant burden on public health worldwide. In spite of great advances during recent years, there are still many challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of liver diseases. During recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely used for the diagnosis, risk stratification, and prognostic prediction of various diseases based on clinical datasets and medical images. Accumulative studies have shown its performance for diagnosing patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and liver fibrosis and assessing their severity, and for predicting treatment response and recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma, outcomes of liver transplantation recipients, and risk of drug-induced liver injury. Herein, we aim to comprehensively summarize the current evidence regarding diagnostic, prognostic, and/or therapeutic role of AI in these common liver diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pancreatic encephalopathy (PE) is a lethal complication of acute pancreatitis (AP), but its clinical characteristics and prognosis remain obscure. Herein, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the incidence and outcomes of PE in AP patients. PubMed, EMBASE, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were searched. Based on the data from cohort studies, the incidence and mortality of PE in AP patients were pooled. Based on the individual data from case reports, logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the risk factors for death in PE patients. Among 6702 papers initially identified, 148 were included. Based on 68 cohort studies, the pooled incidence and mortality of PE in AP patients were 11% and 43%, respectively. The causes of death were clearly reported in 282 patients, of which the most common was multiple organ failure (n = 197). Based on 80 case reports, 114 AP patients with PE were included. The causes of death were clearly reported in 19 patients, of which the most common was multiple organ failure (n = 8). Univariate analyses showed that multiple organ failure (OR = 5.946; p = 0.009) and chronic cholecystitis (OR = 5.400; p = 0.008) were the significant risk factors of death among patients with PE. PE is not a rare complication of AP and indicates poor prognosis. Such a high mortality of PE patients may be attributed to its coexistence of multiple organ failure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The role of human albumin (HA) infusion in cirrhotic patients has been increasingly recognized. This paper aims to summarize the evidence from meta-analyses regarding HA infusion for the management of cirrhosis and its complications. Methods: A systematic search in the PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane library databases, and in reference lists was conducted. All relevant meta-analyses were identified and their findings were reviewed. The Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR-2) checklist was used to evaluate the methodological quality and the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) system to assess the quality of evidence for significant outcomes. Results: Among 300 papers initially identified, 18 meta-analyses have been included. Short- and long-term HA infusion at high doses decreased the mortality of patients with decompensated cirrhosis. In cirrhotic patients with ascites, long-term HA infusion reduced the recurrence of ascites, but not mortality. In cirrhotic patients undergoing large-volume paracentesis (LVP), HA infusion reduced the incidence of post-paracentesis circulatory dysfunction and hyponatremia, but not mortality or renal impairment. In cirrhotic patients with overt hepatic encephalopathy (HE), HA infusion improved the severity of overt HE, but not overall mortality. In cirrhotic patients with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP), but not those with non-SBP infections, HA infusion reduced the mortality and renal impairment. In cirrhotic patients with type-1 hepatorenal syndrome (HRS), an increment of 100 g in cumulative HA dose increased 1.15-fold survival, but not HRS reversal. In these meta-analyses, the quality of methodology was low or critically low, and that of the evidence was from very low to moderate. Conclusions: Based on the limited evidence from these meta-analyses, HA infusion appears to be beneficial in cirrhotic patients with ascites, overt HE, and SBP and in those undergoing LVP, but not in those with non-SBP infections. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and COVID-19 vaccination may cause splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT), which is potentially fatal. The present study aims to pool the incidence and outcomes of SVT patients with COVID-19 or having received COVID-19 vaccines. The PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases were searched. Based on the data from cohort studies, meta-analyses were performed to evaluate the incidence of SVT in COVID-19 patients or people having received COVID-19 vaccines. Pooled proportions were calculated. Based on the individual data from case reports, logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with death in SVT patients. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated. Among 654 papers initially identified, 135 were included. Based on 12 cohort studies, the pooled incidence of SVT in COVID-19 patients was 0.6%. Data were insufficient to estimate the incidence of SVT after COVID-19 vaccination. Based on 123 case reports, the mortality was 14% (9/64) in SVT patients with COVID-19 and 25% (15/59) in those who received COVID-19 vaccines. Univariate analyses demonstrated that age (OR = 1.061; p = 0.017), diabetes mellitus (OR = 14.00; p = 0.002), anticoagulation (OR = 0.098; p = 0.004), and bowel resection (OR = 16.00; p = 0.001) were significantly associated with death in SVT patients with COVID-19; and anticoagulation (OR = 0.025; p = 0.003) and intravenous immunoglobulin (OR = 0.175; p = 0.046) were significantly associated with death in SVT patients who received COVID-19 vaccines. Multivariate analyses did not identify any independent factor for death in both patients. This study compared electrokinetic (EK) remediation with and without interval power breaking in the removal of total and plant available cadmium (Cd) in the soil. Two laboratory experiments, i.e. EK remediation with interval power breaking (24–12 h power-on-off cycles) and conventional EK remediation (continuous power supply), with the same accumulated time (192 h) of power supply, were conducted to remove soil Cd. After the EK remediation with interval power breaking, the total Cd removal efficiency in the soil rose to 38%, in comparison to 28% after the conventional EK remediation. As for the plant available Cd, the removal efficiency was enhanced from 52 to 63%. Additionally, the electric current during the EK remediation and electric conductivity after the EK remediation were higher in the soil treated by interval power breaking, which indicated an enhanced desorption and/or migration of charged species. It further meant that the higher removal efficiency of soil Cd by interval power breaking could be related to the enhanced desorption and/or migration of Cd species. This study indicated that both conventional EK remediation and EK remediation with interval power breaking were effective methods to remove soil Cd but EK remediation with interval power breaking was more efficient.Article Highlights: Plant available Cd has higher removal efficiency than total Cd after EK remediation. Human glutaminyl cyclase (hQC) appeared as a promising new target with its inhibitors attracted much attention for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in recent years. But so far, only a few compounds have been reported as hQC inhibitors. To find novel and potent hQC inhibitors, a high-specificity ZBG (zinc-binding groups)-based pharmacophore model comprising customized ZBG feature was first generated using HipHop algorithm in Discovery Studio software for screening out hQC inhibitors from the SPECS database. After purification by docking studies and drug-like ADMET properties filters, four potential hit compounds were retrieved. Subsequently, these hit compounds were subjected to 30-ns molecular dynamic (MD) simulations to explore their binding modes at the active side of hQC. MD simulations demonstrated that these hit compounds formed a chelating interaction with the zinc ion, which was consistent with the finding that the electrostatic interaction was the major driving force for binding to hQC confirmed with MMPBSA energy decomposition. Higher binding affinities of these compounds were also verified by the binding free energy calculations comparing with the references. In this study, the role of phospholipids in transepithelial transport and the impact on the antioxidant activity of purple sweet potato anthocyanins (PSPAs) was evaluated. PSPAs were purified by column chromatography, and then PSPAs-phospholipids complex (PSPAs-PC) was prepared. In antioxidant assay in vitro, PSPAs-PC exhibited potential antioxidant activity; meanwhile, it exhibited relatively higher stability in mimic gastrointestinal digestion conditions. The inhibitory effect of PSPAs-PC on the oxidation of soybean oil was significantly higher after 15 days storage. The presence of phospholipids increased the transepithelial transport of PSPAs; its apparent permeability coefficient ( Papp) was higher, while its efflux ratio was lower than PSPAs. Based on the above results, it clearly displays the potential of phospholipids in the promotion of intestinal transport of PSPAs, and further studies are needed to explore the in-depth mechanism of the bioavailability promotion effect of phospholipids. In the present study, polyphenols from green tea (GTP), oolong tea (OTP) and black tea (BTP) were prepared by extraction with hot water and polyamide column chromatography. In antioxidant assay in vitro, each tea polyphenols exhibited potential activity; the intestinal absorption of GTP, OTP and BTP was investigated individually by Caco-2 transwell system, and each sample was poorly transported, illustrating a low transport rate for tea polyphenols through cell monolayers. The effects of GTP, OTP and BTP on human intestinal microbiota were also evaluated, and each sample induced the proliferation of certain beneficial bacteria and inhibited Bacteroides- Prevotella and Clostridium histolyticum. Moreover, the short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) produced in cultures with tea polyphenols were relatively higher. Together, these results suggested GTP, OTP and BTP may modulate the intestinal flora and generate SCFA, and contribute to the improvements of human health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible role of BAX and BI-1 genes in chilling injury of cucumber fruit. BAX and BI-1 gene expressions were assayed under 2 ± 1 °C. Meanwhile, cell death, cellular integrity, specific chromatin fragmentation and nucleus morphology in cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L. cv. Zhexiu-1) fruits were determined. Results indicated that BAX and BI-1 genes were activated by low temperature and the expression level of the BAX was much higher than BI-1. At the same time, electrolyte leakage and cell death were increased coupled with nuclear envelope disassembly and DNA fragmentation during the occurrence of chilling injury. In addition, characteristic features of programmed cell death were induced as well as the initiation of chilling injury. Poly- γ-glutamic acid ( γ-PGA) is a novel polyamino acid formed through microorganism fermentation and biosynthesis. In the present test, membrane (PGA-C) formation by γ-PGA and collodion was performed by using 0.1% glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent. A study was conducted on the PGA-C adsorption of Cu, specifically the related adsorption equilibrium and kinetics, desorption and regeneration. The results show that with an initial solution pH=5.5 and at 318 K, the static adsorption isotherm behavior of PGA-C is in compliance with the Langmuir model and is beneficial to the adsorption of the metal. Meanwhile, with the reaction lasting for 30min, adsorption equilibrium was reached with a maximum adsorption capacity up to 7.431 mg/g. The entire reaction process follows the pseudo-second-order kinetics. By using PGA-C, good regeneration results were obtained after adsorption-generation-adsorption cycling with an HCl solution (0.1 mol/L) as regeneration liquid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been widely used to produce alcoholic beverages and bio-fuels; however, its performance is remarkably compromised by the increased ethanol concentration during the fermentation process. In this study, RNA-sequence analysis was used to investigate the protective effect of green tea polyphenols (GTP) on S. cerevisiae cells from ethanol-induced damage. GO and KEGG analysis showed that to deal with the stress of ethanol, large amounts of genes related to cell wall, cell membrane, basic metabolism and redox regulation were significantly differentially expressed (P < 0.05), while these undesired changes could be partly relieved by administration of GTP, suggesting its potential to enhance the ethanol tolerance of S. cerevisiae. The present study provided a global view of the transcriptomic changes of S. cerevisiae in response to the accumulation of ethanol and the treatment of GTP, which might deepen our understanding about S. cerevisiae and the fermentation process, and thus benefit the development of the bioethanol production industry. Mercury is considered to be "a global pollutant" and raises concern worldwide. Once mercury enters the body, it will be distributed all over the body but will accumulate in the brain, kidney and liver. To date, no substance originating from edible fungi capable of adsorbing mercury has been reported. We found that the mushroom Grifola frondosa exhibited mercury adsorption capacity. A polysaccharide-peptide (GFPP), displaying the unique N-terminal amino acid sequence of APPGMHQKQQ and 7 partial sequences with high reliability obtained by LC-MS/MS, was isolated by hot-water extraction of its fruiting bodies followed by ion exchange chromatography and gel filtration chromatography. Two rat models were employed to determine the dose and the duration of HgCl2 treatment (given by acute administration or continuous treatment) to test if G. frondosa could promote mercury elimination. For rats subjected to acute treatment with HgCl2, both GFPP and G. frondosa fruiting bodies (GFFF) could accelerate the decline of blood mercury level, which fell precipitously by 50% on the second day. GFPP and GFFF also promoted elimination of the burden of mercury in the liver and kidneys. For rats receiving continuous HgCl2 treatment, G. frondosa prevented the progressive increase of blood mercury level, and kept the blood mercury level within a relatively stable range. Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) plays a critical role in ethanol fermentation. However, during the fermentation, yeast cells are exposed to the accumulation of ethanol, which significantly affect the cell growth and the target product yield. In the present work, we employed RNA-sequence (RNA-seq) to investigate the ameliorate effect of Cyclocarya paliurus (C. paliurus) triterpenoids on S. cerevisiae under the ethanol stress. After C. paliurus triterpenoids intervention (0.3% v/v), 84 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, including 39 up-regulated and 45 down-regulated genes. The addition of triterpenoids decreased the filamentous and invasive growth of cells, and benefit to the redox balance and glycolysis. This study offers a global view through transcriptome analysis to understand the molecular response to ethanol in Sc131 by the treatment of C. paliurus triterpenoids, which may be helpful to enhance ethanol tolerance of S. cerevisiae in the fermentation of Chinese fruit wine.Graphical abstract: [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
