Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease is a genetic kidney disease caused by mutations in the genes PKD1 or PKD2. Its course is characterized by the formation of progressively enlarged cysts in the renal tubules bilaterally. The basic genetic explanation for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease is the double-hit theory, and many of its mechanistic issues can be explained by the cilia doctrine. However, the precise molecular mechanisms underpinning this condition's occurrence are still not completely understood. Experimental evidence suggests that aquaporins, a class of transmembrane channel proteins, including aquaporin-1, aquaporin-2, aquaporin-3, and aquaporin-11, are involved in the mechanism of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. Aquaporins are either a potential new target for the treatment of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, and further study into the physiopathological role of aquaporins in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease will assist to clarify the disease's pathophysiology and increase the pool of potential treatment options. Soil in mining wastelands is seriously polluted with heavy metals. Zero-valent iron (ZVI) is widely used for remediation of heavy metal–polluted soil because of its excellent adsorption properties; however, the remediation process is affected by complex environmental conditions, such as acid rain and freeze-thaw cycles. In this study, the effects of different pH values and freeze-thaw cycles on remediation of antimony (Sb)- and arsenic (As)-contaminated soil by ZVI were investigated in laboratory simulation experiments. The stability and potential human health risks associated with the remediated soil were evaluated. The results showed that ZVI has a significant stabilizing effect on Sb and As in both acidic and alkaline soils contaminated with dual levels of Sb and As, and the freeze-thaw process in different pH value solution systems further enhances the ability of ZVI to stabilize Sb and As, especially in acidic soils. However, it should be noted that apart from the pH=1.0 solution environment, ZVI's ability to stabilize As is attenuated under other circumstances, potentially leading to leaching of its unstable form and thereby increasing contamination risks. This indicates that the F1 (2% ZVI+pH=1 solution+freeze-thaw cycle) processing exhibits superior effectiveness. After F1 treatment, the bioavailability of Sb and As in both soils also significantly decreased during the gastric and intestinal stages (about 60.00%), the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of Sb and As in alkaline soils are eliminated for children and adults, with a decrease ranging from 60.00% to 70.00%, while in acidic soil, the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of As to adults and children is acceptable, but Sb still poses non-carcinogenic risks to children, despite reductions of about 65.00%. These findings demonstrate that soil pH is a crucial factor influencing the efficacy of ZVI in stabilizing Sb and As contaminants during freeze-thaw cycles. This provides a solid theoretical foundation for utilizing ZVI in the remediation of Sb- and As-contaminated soils, emphasizing the significance of considering both pH levels and freeze-thaw conditions to ensure effective and safe treatment. Syndecan-binding protein (SDCBP) was reported to stimulate the advancement of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and could potentially be a target for ESCC treatment. There is a growing corpus of research on the anti-tumor effects of iron chelators; however, very few studies have addressed the involvement of dexrazoxane in cancer. In this study, structure-based virtual screening was employed to select drugs targeting SDCBP from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drug databases. The sepharose 4B beads pull-down assay revealed that dexrazoxane targeted SDCBP by interacting with its PDZ1 domain. Additionally, dexrazoxane inhibited ESCC cell proliferation and anchorage-independent colony formation via SDCBP. ESCC cell apoptosis and G2 phase arrest were induced as measured by the flow cytometry assay. Subsequent research revealed that dexrazoxane attenuated the binding ability between SDCBP and EGFR in an immunoprecipitation assay. Furthermore, dexrazoxane impaired EGFR membrane localization and inactivated the EGFR/PI3K/Akt pathway. In vivo, xenograft mouse experiments indicated that dexrazoxane suppressed ESCC tumor growth. Type 2 diabetic kidney disease (T2DKD) is a common microvascular complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and its incidence is significantly increasing. Microinflammation plays an important role in the development of T2DKD. Based on this, this study investigated the value of inflammatory markers including neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) in the prediction of T2DKD. This was a cross-sectional survey study. A total of 90 patients with T2DM, who were hospitalized in the nephrology and endocrinology departments of the First Teaching Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from June 2021 to January 2022, were included and divided into three groups (A1, A2, A3) according to the urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR). Observe and compare the basic information, clinical and laboratory data, and the inflammatory markers NLR, hs-CRP, MCP-1. Results revealed that high levels of NLR (OR = 6.562, 95% CI 2.060–20.902, P = 0.001) and MCP-1 (OR = 1.060, 95% CI 1.026–1.095, P < 0.001) were risk factors in the development of T2DKD. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the area under curve of NLR and MCP-1 in diagnosing T2DKD were 0.760 (95% CI 0.6577–0.863, P < 0.001) and 0.862 (95% CI 0.7787–0.937, P < 0.001). Main conclusion: Integrated root phenotypes and transcriptome analysis have revealed key candidate genes responsible for maize root growth and development in potassium deficiency. Potassium (K) is a vital macronutrient for plant growth, but our understanding of its regulatory mechanisms in maize root system architecture (RSA) and K+ uptake remains limited. To address this, we conducted hydroponic and field trials at different growth stages. K+ deficiency significantly inhibited maize root growth, with metrics like total root length, primary root length, width and maximum root number reduced by 50% to 80% during early seedling stages. In the field, RSA traits exhibited maximum values at the silking stage but continued to decline thereafter. Furthermore, K deprivation had a pronounced negative impact on root morphology and RSA growth and grain yield. RNA-Seq analysis identified 5972 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including 17 associated with K+ signaling, transcription factors, and transporters. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis revealed 23 co-expressed modules, with enrichment of transcription factors at different developmental stages under K deficiency. Several DEGs and transcription factors were predicted as potential candidate genes responsible for maize root growth and development. Interestingly, some of these genes exhibited homology to well-known regulators of root architecture or development in Arabidopsis, such as Zm00001d014467 (AtRCI3), Zm00001d011237 (AtWRKY9), and Zm00001d030862 (AtAP2/ERF). Identifying these key genes helps to provide a deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms governing maize root growth and development under nutrient deficient conditions offering potential benefits for enhancing maize production and improving stress resistance through targeted manipulation of RSA traits in modern breeding efforts. Purposes: Postoperative rehabilitation of upper limb function is crucial for breast cancer. Therefore, we developed a rehabilitation management platform using virtual reality to improve rehabilitation compliance and effect. The purpose of this research was to understand the user usability experience of breast cancer patients about the postoperative rehabilitation management of upper limb function using virtual reality. Methods: A qualitative descriptive research was designed. We used a maximum difference purpose sampling method. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a 3-armor hospital in Changchun was selected for the recruitment. A one-on-one semi-structured interviews were conducted with patients after breast cancer operation. The Colaizzi seven-step analysis method was used to classify data under summarized themes. Results: Twenty patients participated in this semi-structured interview. User experience could be summarized into four themes as follows: 1) experience and feeling after using the virtual reality rehabilitation management platform; 2) factors influencing the use of the virtual reality rehabilitation management platform; 3) willingness to recommend the virtual reality rehabilitation management platform to peers; and 4) suggestions to improve the virtual reality rehabilitation management platform. Conclusions: Breast cancer patients who used the rehabilitation management platform had a good experience, and their recognition and satisfaction were high. The use of the platform is influenced by many factors, and most patients are willing to recommend this platform to their peers. Nanozyme is a collection of nanomaterials with enzyme-like activity but higher environmental tolerance and long-term stability than their natural counterparts. Improving the catalytic activity and expanding the category of nanozymes are prerequisites to complement or even supersede enzymes. However, the development of hydrolytic nanozymes is still challenged by diverse hydrolytic substrates and following complicated mechanisms. Here, two strategies are informed by data to screen and predict catalytic active sites of MOF (metal–organic framework) based hydrolytic nanozymes: (1) to increase the intrinsic activity by finely tuned Lewis acidity of the metal clusters; (2) to improve the density of active sites by shortening the length of ligands. Finally, as-obtained Ce-FMA-MOF-based hydrolytic nanozyme is capable of cleaving phosphate bonds, amide bonds, glycosidic bonds, and even their mixture, biofilms. This work provides a rational methodology to design hydrolytic nanozyme, enriches the diversity of nanozymes, and potentially sheds light on future evolution of enzyme engineering. To reveal the spatio-temporal variation characteristics of vegetation coverage in Xinjiang in recent 20 years, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data were utilized; the spatio-temporal variation characteristics and future trends of vegetation coverage in the vegetation growth season (April–October) from 2001 to 2020 in Xinjiang and the response of vegetation to elevation and precipitation were evaluated by dimidiate pixel model, trend analysis, and correlation analysis. The results indicated that the vegetation coverage generally revealed an increasing trend with a growth rate of 0.15%/10a. The spatial distribution of vegetation coverage presented a decreasing pattern from northwest to southeast, and areas characterized by very low vegetation coverage accounted for about 64.12% of the total area. During 20 years, 84.95% of the vegetation coverage types in the study area remained unchanged, 7.57% improved, and 7.48% showed a degradation trend. Areas characterized by an elevation of less than 4 km were dominated by medium vegetation coverage types or above, and an elevation of more than 4 km were dominated by low vegetation coverage types. At the monthly scales, there was a high correlation between precipitation factors and vegetation coverage, and vegetation exhibited some hysteresis effect to precipitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Especially in the case of persistent EBV, a virus that is already able to trigger HLH, APDS patients are theoretically more prone to develop hyperinflammation and thus HLH [[8]]. Appropriate treatment of APDS patients developing HLH is a great therapeutic challenge. Both patients were children at the time of APDS diagnosis, which suggests that genetic diagnosis is more often considered in pediatric HLH. Vehicular fog computing (VFC), combining the vehicular ad hoc network with fog computing, is an efficient vehicle communication architecture. However, the user data is often threatened since VFC is an open environment. Attribute-based encryption (ABE) is suitable for open scenarios, such as cloud and Internet of Things, because of its confidentiality and access control characteristics. However, the traditional ABE has disadvantages, such as the inability to hide the attributes in the access policy and the use of computationally inefficient composite order bilinear pairing groups to prove adaptive security. Traditional ABE is not practical in VFC. We summarized the existing schemes of full policy hiding ABE and partial policy hiding ABE and then concluded that partial policy hiding ABE is more suitable for VFC. We combine policy hiding technology and the technology of converting bilinear pairing cryptography schemes into prime-order bilinear pairing cryptography schemes and propose an efficient and partial policy hiding ciphertext-policy ABE scheme suitable for VFC. Chiral β-amino alcohols are important building blocks for the synthesis of drugs, natural products, chiral auxiliaries, chiral ligands and chiral organocatalysts. The catalytic asymmetric β-amination of alcohols offers a direct strategy to access this class of molecules. Herein, we report a general intramolecular C(sp3)-H nitrene insertion method for the synthesis of chiral oxazolidin-2-ones as precursors of chiral β-amino alcohols. Specifically, the ring-closing C(sp3)-H amination of N-benzoyloxycarbamates with 2 mol% of a chiral ruthenium catalyst provides cyclic carbamates in up to 99% yield and with up to 99% ee. The method is applicable to benzylic, allylic, and propargylic C-H bonds and can even be applied to completely non-activated C (sp3)-H bonds, although with somewhat reduced yields and stereoselectivities. The obtained cyclic carbamates can subsequently be hydrolyzed to obtain chiral β-amino alcohols. The method is very practical as the catalyst can be easily synthesized on a gram scale and can be recycled after the reaction for further use. The synthetic value of the new method is demonstrated with the asymmetric synthesis of a chiral oxazolidin-2-one as intermediate for the synthesis of the natural product aurantioclavine and chiral β-amino alcohols that are intermediates for the synthesis of chiral amino acids, indane-derived chiral Box-ligands, and the natural products dihydrohamacanthin A and dragmacidin A. Racemic α-chloro imidazol-2-yl-ketones undergo an enantioconvergent photoactivated C–C bond formation with N-aryl glycines catalyzed by a single bis-cyclometalated chiral-at-rhodium catalyst in yields of up to 80% and up to 98% enantiomeric excess (ee). Control experiments support a mechanism which is initiated by a single electron transfer from N-aryl glycinate to the photochemically excited rhodium-bound α-chloro imidazol-2-yl-ketone, followed by chloride fragmentation of the α-chloroketone, decarboxylation of the glycinate, and a subsequent highly stereocontrolled radical-radical coupling. This work showcases the ability of the chiral rhodium catalyst to serve a dual function as chiral Lewis acid and at the same time as the photoredox active species upon substrate binding. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer (LC) and tuberculosis (TB) are common chronic lung diseases that generate a large disease burden and significant health care resource use in China. The aim of this study was to quantify spatial patterns and effects of air pollution and meteorological factors on hospitalization of COPD, LC and TB in Beijing. Daily counts of hospitalization for 2010 were obtained from the Beijing Urban Employees Basic Medical Insurance (UEBMI) system. Bayesian hierarchical Poisson regression models were applied to identify spatial patterns of hospitalization for COPD, LC and TB at the district level and explore associations with inhalable particulate matter (aerodynamic diameter <10 μm, PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), mean temperature and relative humidity. There were 18,882, 14,295 and 2,940 counts of hospitalizations for COPD, LC and TB respectively, in Beijing in 2010. Clusters of high relative risk were in different locations for the three diseases. The effect of relative humidity on COPD hospitalization was most significant with a relative risk (RR) of 1.070 (95%CI: 1.054, 1.086) per one percent increase. For lung cancer hospitalization, exposure to ambient SO2 was associated with a RR of 1.034 (95%CI: 1.011, 1.058) per μg m–3 increase. For tuberculosis, the effect of mean temperature was significant with a RR of 1.107 (95%CI: 1.038, 1.180) per °C increase. Risk factors and spatial patterns were different for hospitalization of non-infectious and infectious chronic lung disease in Beijing. Proposal: A 12-year field experiment was conducted to assess straw mulch effects on soil organic carbon fractions, the carbon pool management index (CPMI) at different depths, and crop yield under a no-till rice-wheat rotation system on the Chengdu Plain, southwestern China. Materials and methods: There were two treatments in the experiment: no-till without straw mulch (CK) and no-till with straw mulch (SM). The soil was sampled at 0–5, 5–10, 10–20, and 20–30-cm depths. Soil total organic carbon (TOC), the labile organic carbon fractions, including particulate organic carbon (POC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and permanganate-oxidizable carbon (KMnO4-C), and the CPMI were analyzed. The crop grains were measured between September 2013 and May 2018. Results and discussion: Between 2013 and 2018, rice and wheat grain yields under SM were comparable to CK, except there were higher rice yields in 2016 and higher wheat yields in 2017 under SM. The soil organic carbon decreased as soil depth increased in both treatments. Soil TOC, POC, and KMnO4-C concentrations at 0–5 and 5–10 cm, CPMI at 0–5 and 5–10 cm, and DOC at 0–5, 5–10, and 10–20-cm soil depths were significantly greater under SM than under CK, whereas the MBC at 0–5 and 5–10 cm under SM was lower than CK. The POC/TOC, KMnO4-C/TOC, and DOC/TOC ratios were greater under SM in the 0–5 and 5–10 cm, 0–5 cm, and 5–10 and 10–20-cm layers than CK, respectively, whereas the MBC/TOC ratio decreased under SM at 0–5, 5–10, and 10–20-cm depths. Conclusions: The results showed that straw mulching should be adopted when a no-till rice-wheat cropping system is used in southwestern China because it leads to effective improvements in SOC sequestration while still maintaining normal crop yields. We study the relative orbifold Donaldson-Thomas theory of [C2/Zn+1]×P1. A correspondence is established between the DT theory relative to disjoint union of vertical fibers to quantum multiplication by divisors for the Hilbert scheme of points on [C2/Zn+1]. This determines a correspondence between the whole theories if a further nondegeneracy condition is assumed. Cyclobentinib was designed and synthesized as a novel anti-CML agent, its in vitro activity against K562 cells was evaluated by MTT assay. CB1107 showed remarkable cytotoxicity against K562 cell line with an IC50 of 0.037 ± 0.028 μmol/L, and thus it was 17-fold more potent than the reference drug Imatinib. Inducing cell apoptosis and affecting cell cycling of this compound in K562 cells were estimated by using flow cytometry and Acridine Orange/Ethidium Bromide (AO/EB) staining. The results showed that CB1107 was capable of arresting cell cycle at G0/G1 phase as well as inducing cell apoptosis significantly. Molecular mechanism of CB1107 was detected by the protein expression of Bcr-AblP210 using western blotting analysis. Downregulation of expression of Bcr-AblP210 was obviously revealed in the treatment of this tetralin amide compound. Of note, the results of these investigations suggested that CB1107 is more potent than the reference drug Imatinib against K562 cells. Additionally, in vivo results indicated that CB1107 significantly decreased tumor growth in K562 tumor-bearing Non-obese Diabetic/Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (NOD/SCID) mice. Histopathological investigation revealed that CB1107 without notable toxicity in a given dose range. These findings collectively demonstrate CB1107 is a promising candidate as a novel anti-CML agent. Paddy fields account for a large proportion of cultivated land, with huge N consumption each year. Reducing N loss via application of low-cost slow-release fertilizers is beneficial for eco-friendly rice production. The current study aimed to investigate the effects of matrix-based urea on soil N availability, rice yield, agronomical efficiency (AE), and rice profits. A 2-year field experiment was conducted during 2015 and 2016 following a randomized block design. It included three treatments, i.e., control test (CK, without urea application), common urea (CU, 150 kg N ha−1), and matrix-based urea (MU, 150 kg N ha−1). Besides, three laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the N leaching, ammonia volatilization, and slow-release mechanism. Results showed that application of MU increased rice yields by > 10%, biomass by > 6%, and AE by > 30% in both seasons. Greater yield, biomass, and AE in MU were largely attributed to higher soil available N, resulted from lower risk of N leaching and ammonia volatilization. Aggregate structure was partly responsible for lower N loss in MU. Greater soil available N in MU increased rice height, leaf area, root area, leaf total chlorophyll, and activity of nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase in flag leaves, and thus favored rice growth. Compared with CU, MU increased fertilizer cost by about 23 USD ha−1, but increased rice profits by > 230 USD ha−1 due to greater yield. Phosphorus (P) fractionation and sorption behavior as well as the abundance and community composition of phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) in sediments, including inorganic phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (IPB) and organic phosphate-mineralizing bacteria (OPB), were investigated in 27 sampling sites of five sections in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) in December 2012. The calcium-bound phosphorus (CaCO∼P) accounted for the largest part for P fractions in the sediment of TGR, which was paralleled with IPB outnumbering OPB. Furthermore, some PSB isolates, such as Micromonospora sp., Aminobacter sp., and Arthrobacter sp., were shared by the IPB and OPB. Thus, some IPB species functioned as OPB and vise versa, which could be further reflected by a negative and significant relationship between PSB (IPB + OPB) number and content of CaCO∼P together with acid-soluble organic phosphorus (ASOP). Spatially, the highest ASOP content in the section Mudong and the highest CaCO∼P plus iron-bound phosphorus (Fe(OOH)∼P) as well as equilibrium phosphorus concentration (EPC) in the sections of Yunyang and Zigui due to sediment sequestration by the dam, as well as the positive relationship between EPC and the ratios of different phosphorus species and phosphorus sorption maximum ( Q ), jointly indicated pathway diversification and potential risk of phosphorus release mediated by PSB in TGR. Purpose: Nitrogen (N) application in excess of assimilatory capacity for aquaculture ponds can lead to water-quality deterioration through ammonia accumulation with toxicity to fish. Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB) potentially process extra ammonium, so their abundance and diversity are of great ecological significance. This study aimed to reveal variations in communities of AOA and AOB as affected by aquaculture activities. Materials and methods: From June to September 2012, water and sediments were sampled monthly in three ponds feeding Mandarin fish in a suburb of Wuhan City, China. Molecular methods based on ammonia monooxygenase ( amoA) gene were used to determine abundance and diversity of AOA and AOB in the sediments. Results and discussion: The pond with the highest fish stock had the highest nutrient loadings in terms of different forms of N and carbon (C) in both sediment and water. The abundance and diversity of AOB were significantly higher than those of AOA in the sediment. The AOB abundance showed a significantly positive relationship to concentration of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in interstitial water, and both abundance and diversity of AOA were significantly negative to concentration of ammonium in interstitial water. Furthermore, AOA species affiliated to Nitrososphaera-like and Nitrosophaera Cluster was distinguishable from those observed in other aquaculture environments. Conclusions: Nutrients in sediment were enriched by intensive aquaculture activity, among which organic N and C, together with ammonium and SRP, shaped the communities of ammonia oxidizers, with AOB dominating over AOA in terms of abundance and diversity. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the prescription of antibacterial agents for acute upper respiratory tract infections (URIs) in Beijing. Methods: A total of 8,588,699 outpatient cases in tertiary hospitals with acute upper respiratory tract infections (URIs) were selected from the Beijing Medical Claim Data for Employees (BMCDE) from Oct 2010 to Sep 2012. Second-generation cephalosporins, third-generation cephalosporins, fourth-generation cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, macrolides (except for erythromycin), combinations of penicillins (including β-lactamase inhibitors), and streptomycins were classified as broad-spectrum antibacterial agents. The rates for antibiotic prescriptions and broad-spectrum antibiotic use were calculated in all cases as well as in various URI diagnosis subgroups and age (18-44, 45-64, and ≥65 years) subgroups. The most frequently prescribed antibiotic classes were identified by calculating the proportions of the different agents in all prescribed antibiotic agents. Results: Overall, the rate of antibiotic prescription is 39.0 %, and cases diagnosed with acute tonsillitis, sinusitis, and epiglottitis have the highest prescription rate (73.6 %), followed by acute laryngitis and bronchitis (52.3 %), acute pharyngitis (40.1 %), and acute nasopharyngitis (37.2 %). Broad-spectrum agents were chosen in 82.4 % of the cases that were prescribed antibiotics, ranging from 81.9 % of cases with naspharyngitis to 87.1 % of the cases with tonsillitis, sinusitis, and epiglottitis. Second-generation cephalosporins, macrolides, fluoroquinolones, third-generation cephalosporins, and combinations of penicillins were most frequently prescribed, accounting for more than 80 % of all prescribed antibacterials. Conclusions: Antibacterial drug prescription for outpatients with acute URIs is common in tertiary hospitals in Beijing, and the prescribed antibacterials are usually broad-spectrum agents. Biochar-modified polyacrylate-like polymers are promising waterborne polymer-based membrane coatings for controlled-release fertilizers. However, the effect of these membrane polymers on paddy soil is unknown. A soil incubation experiment was conducted using Fourier transform infrared photoacoustic spectroscopy to monitor the changes in the polymer-coated membranes in paddy soil, and Biolog EcoPlates and polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis were used to detect the effects of the membranes on soil bacterial community profiles. Compared to unmodified membranes, the biodegradation rate of the biochar-modified membrane was slower, and the membrane was more intact, which improved and guaranteed the controlled release of nutrients. Compared to the soil without membranes, the biochar-modified membranes, as well as unmodified ones, showed no significant impacts on the composition diversity of soil dominant bacterial community. The activity and functional diversity of soil culturable microbial community during the early stage of incubation were reduced by biochar-modified membranes due to the release of small amount of soluble organic materials but were both recovered in the 12 month of the incubation period. Therefore, the biochar-modified waterborne polyacrylate was environmentally friendly, demonstrating its potential both in the development of coated controlled-release fertilizers and in the utilization of crop residue. A new grading system for plant-available potassium (K) in soils based on K release rate from soils and plant growth indices was established. In the study, fourteen different agricultural soils from the southern subtropical to the northern temperate zones in China were analyzed by both chemical extraction methods and exhaustive cropping techniques. Based on the change trends in plant growth indices, relative biomass yields of 70% and 50%, K-deficient coefficients of 35 and 22 under conventional exhaustive experiments, and tissue K concentrations of 40 g kg−1 and 15 g kg−1 under intensive exhaustive experiments were obtained as critical values that represent different change trends. In addition, the extraction method using 0.2 mol L−1 sodium tetraphenylboron (NaTPB) suggested soil K release rates of 12 mg kg−1 min−1 and 0.4 mg kg−1 min−1 as turning points that illustrated three different release trends. Thus, plant-available K in soils was classified into three categories: high available K, medium available K and low available K, and grading criteria and measurement methods were also proposed. Controlled-release fertilizers (CRF) use a controlled-release technology to enhance the nutrient use efficiency of crops. Many factors affect the release of nutrients from the waterborne polymer-coated CRF, but the effects of thermal post-treatments remain unclear. In this study, a waterborne polyacrylate-coated CRF was post-treated at different temperatures (30 °C, 60 °C, and 80 °C) and durations (2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 h) after being developed in the Wurster fluidized bed. To characterize the polyacrylate membrane, and hence to analyze the mechanism of nutrient release, Fourier transform mid-infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy were employed. The nutrient-release model of CRF post-treated at 30 °C was the inverse 'L' curve, but an increased duration of the post-treatment had no effect. The nutrient-release model was 'S' curve and nutrient-release period was enhanced at higher post-treatment temperatures, and increased post-treatment duration lengthened slowed nutrient release due to a more compact membrane and a smoother membrane surface as well as a promoted crosslinking action. CRF equipped with specified nutrient-release behaviors can be achieved by optimizing the thermal post-treatment parameters, which can contribute to the development and application of waterborne polymer-coated CRF and controlled-release technologies. In response to addressing potassium (K) deficiency in soil and decreasing agricultural production costs, the potential of K-bearing phyllosilicate minerals that can be directly used as an alternative K source has been investigated using sodium tetraphenylboron (NaTPB) extraction and an intensive cropping experiment. The results showed that the critical value of K-release rate and leaf K concentration was 3.30 g kg−1 h−1 and 30.64 g (kg dry matter)−1, respectively under the experimental conditions. According to this critical value, the maximum amount of released K that could be utilized by a plant with no K deficiency symptoms was from biotite (27.80 g kg−1) and vermiculite (5.58 g kg−1), followed by illite, smectite and muscovite with 2.76, 0.88 and 0.49 g kg−1, respectively. Ryegrass grown on phlogopite showed K deficiency symptoms during the overall growth period. It is concluded that biotite and vermiculite can be directly applied as a promising and sustainable alternative to the use of classical K fertilizers, illite can be utilized in combination with soluble K fertilizers, whereas muscovite, phlogopite and smectite may not be suitable for plant growth. Shear fracture is a significant failure mechanism in particular disaster such as fault slips and rockbursts in deep rock engineering, which frequently involve in-situ stress and disturbance loads from earthquakes or blasting. Studying the dynamic shear fracture behavior of rocks under confining pressure is crucial for disaster prevention. This study performed a series of dynamic mode II fracture tests under different confining pressures using granite short core in compression (SCC) specimens via a modified triaxial split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system. It is discovered that (1) dynamic mode II fracture toughness increases as loading rate and confining pressure rise; (2) The Linear relationship between dynamic or static fracture toughness and confining pressure is independent of loading rate. An empirical equation was presented to quantify relationship between fracture toughness, confining pressure and loading rate. The final failure degree of SCC specimens aggravates as the loading rate increases or confining pressures reduce. The morphological features of fracture surfaces were quantitatively investigated using fractal and statistical theories. It was observed that roughness in dynamic fracture surfaces decreases with increased in confining pressures and loading rates. Statistical analyses on asperity height h and slope angle α indicate that the undulation of fracture surfaces decreases with confining pressure at a given loading rate, validating the fractal results. A new index, namely the number of dominant intervals (NDI), is proposed to quantify the degree of aspect orientation distribution concentration.
