Deep water in the South China Sea is renewed by the cold and dense Luzon Strait overflow. However, from where and how the deep water upwells is poorly understood yet. Based on the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model reanalysis data, vertical velocity is derived to answer these questions. Domain-integrated vertical velocity is of two maxima, one in the shallow water and the other at depth, and separated by a layer of minimum at the bottom of the thermocline. Further analysis shows that this two-segmented vertical transport is attributed to the vertical compensation of subsurface water to the excessive outflow of shallow water and upward push of the dense Luzon Strait overflow, respectively. In the abyssal basin, the vertical transport increases upward from zero at the depth of 3 500–4 000 m and reaches a maximum of 1.5×106 m3/s at about 1 500 m. Deep water upwells mainly from the northeastern and southwestern ends of the abyssal basin and off the continental slopes. To explain the upward velocity arising from slope breaks, a possible mechanism is proposed that an onshore velocity component can be derived from the deep western boundary current above steep slopes under bottom friction. This study aims to investigate variability of the deep South China Sea (SCS) circulation using the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) global reanalysis product. The results reveal that annual cycle is a dominant component in the deep SCS circulation. Meanwhile, the boundary circulation strength is the weakest in January and peaks between June and September. The eastern and southern boundary currents strengthen/weaken one to three months earlier than that in the western and northern boundaries. Vector Empirical Orthogonal Functions (VEOF) analysis results reveal that semiannual and intraseasonal fluctuations are significant components, of which the spatial patterns are mainly confined in the northern and western boundary areas as well as the southwestern sub-basin. Wavelet analysis results show the strength of significant fluctuation varies year to year. Trend analysis results indicate a decadal weakening in the deep SCS circulation. An anomalous anticyclonic circulation, 50–70 km apart from the slope break, tends to weaken the cyclonic boundary circulation in the western and northern boundaries as well as the southwestern sub-basin. This trend is similar to the observed decadal weakening in the North Atlantic deep circulation. Thus, the findings of this study reveal that the variation of the deep SCS circulation has a remarkable response to the climate change. Abstract: Influenza is an infectious disease which results in numerous epidemics every year. At present, neuraminidase is regarded, as the key therapeutic target against influenza and several well-known neuraminidase inhibitors are widely used as anti-influenza drugs. Combined computational methods including 3D-QSAR and molecular docking were applied to explore the structural-activity relationship with Xu’s compounds as the data set. Ten epigoitrin derivatives were then designed based on the computational results and they displayed 11.1-85.5 μM inhibitory potencies against neuraminidase in the in vitro biological evaluation. The combined computational studies did not only present the structural-activity relationship of Xu’s inhibitors, but also guide the designation of epigoitrin derivatives as novel neuraminidase inhibitors.Graphical abstract: [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using velocity profiles observed by bottom-mounted ADCPs, we identified strong intraseasonal variability in the Sunda Strait throughflow. This intraseasonal variability, with typical periods of 20-40 days and the strongest energy occurring in the boreal spring, can reverse the Sunda Strait throughflow. Further analysis showed this intraseasonal variability to be closely related to local zonal wind and the sea level gradient along the strait. These observations confirm for the first time the existence of Kelvin-wave-like signals in the Sunda Strait, propagating from the equatorial Indian Ocean. On the basis of the latest version of a U.S. Navy generalized digital environment model (GDEM-V3.0) and World Ocean Atlas (WOA13), the hydraulic theory is revisited and applied to the Luzon Strait, providing a fresh look at the deepwater overflow there. The result reveals that: (1) the persistent density difference between two sides of the Luzon Strait sustains an all year round deepwater overflow from the western Pacific to the South China Sea (SCS); (2) the seasonal variability of the deepwater overflow is influenced not only by changes in the density difference between two sides of the Luzon Strait, but also by changes in its upstream layer thickness; (3) the deepwater overflow in the Luzon Strait shows a weak semiannual variability; (4) the seasonal mean circulation pattern in the SCS deep basin does not synchronously respond to the seasonality of the deepwater overflow in the Luzon Strait. Moreover, the deepwater overflow reaches its seasonal maximum in December (based on GDEM-V3.0) or in fall (October-December, based on the WOA13), accompanied by the lowest temperature of the year on the Pacific side of the Luzon Strait. The seasonal variability of the deepwater overflow is consistent with the existing longest (3.5 a) continuous observation along the major deepwater passage of the Luzon Strait. The wind stresses and their derived wind stress curls, and Sverdrup stream functions over the South China Sea (SCS) in typical winter and summer months from nine datasets are compared. The datasets include CCMP, CERSAT, ASCAT, QSCAT, NCEP, QSCAT-NCEP, HR, ERA-40, and ERA-Interim. Results show that the overall patterns of the wind stresses, wind stress curls, and Sverdrup stream functions from different datasets are similar. However, their magnitudes are remarkably different. Among them, ERA-40 is the smallest while HR is the largest. The former is about 40 % smaller than the mean value, while the latter is about 50 % greater than the mean value. The spatial resolution is important for the presentation of the wind stress features in the SCS. The annual mean volume and heat transport sketches through the inter-basin passages and transoceanic sections have been constructed based on 1 400-year spin up results of the MOM4p1. The spin up starts from a state of rest, driven by the monthly climatological mean force from the NOAA World Ocean Atlas (1994). The volume transport sketch reveals the northward transport throughout the Pacific and southward transport at all latitudes in the Atlantic. The annual mean strength of the Pacific-Arctic-Atlantic through flow is 0.63×10 m/s in the Bering Strait. The majority of the northward volume transport in the southern Pacific turns into the Indonesian through flow (ITF) and joins the Indian Ocean equatorial current, which subsequently flows out southward from the Mozambique Channel, with its majority superimposed on the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). This anti-cyclonic circulation around Australia has a strength of 11×10 m/s according to the model-produced result. The atmospheric fresh water transport, known as P- E+ R (precipitation minus evaporation plus runoff), constructs a complement to the horizontal volume transport of the ocean. The annual mean heat transport sketch exhibits a northward heat transport in the Atlantic and poleward heat transport in the global ocean. The surface heat flux acts as a complement to the horizontal heat transport of the ocean. The climatological volume transports describe the most important features through the inter-basin passages and in the associated basins, including: the positive P- E+ R in the Arctic substantially strengthening the East Greenland Current in summer; semiannual variability of the volume transport in the Drake Passage and the southern Atlantic-Indian Ocean passage; and annual transport variability of the ITF intensifying in the boreal summer. The climatological heat transports show heat storage in July and heat deficit in January in the Arctic; heat storage in January and heat deficit in July in the Antarctic circumpolar current regime (ACCR); and intensified heat transport of the ITF in July. The volume transport of the ITF is synchronous with the volume transport through the southern Indo-Pacific sections, but the year-long southward heat transport of the ITF is out of phase with the heat transport through the equatorial Pacific, which is northward before May and southward after May. A global prognostic model based on MOM4p1, which is a primitive equation nonBoussinesq numerical model, has been integrated with 1 400 years from the state of rest based on the realistic topography to study the long-term pattern of combined wind-driven and thermodynamically-driven general circulation. The model is driven by monthly climatological mean forces and includes 192×189 horizontal grids and 31 pressure-based vertical levels. The main objective is to investigate the mass and heat transports at inter-basin passages and their compensations and roles in the global ocean circulation under equilibrium state of long-term spin up. The kinetic energy analysis divides the spin up process into three stages: the quasi-stable state of wind driven current, the growing phase of thermodynamical circulation and the equilibrium state of thermohaline circulation. It is essential to spin up over a thousand years in order to reach the thermohaline equilibrium state from a state of rest. The Arctic Throughflow from the Bering Strait to the Greenland Sea and the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) are captured and examined with their compensations and existing data. Analysis reveals that the slope structures of sea surface height are the dynamical driving mechanism of the Pacific-Arctic-Atlantic throughflow and ITF. The analysis denotes, in spite of O (1.4×10 m/s) of the southward volume transport in the northern Atlantic, that there is still O (1 PW) of heat transported northward since the northward currents in the upper layer carrymuch higher temperature water than the southward flowing northern Atlantic deep water (NADW). Meridional volume and heat transports are focused on the contributions to NADW renewals and Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). Quantitative descriptions of the interbasin exchanges are explained by meridional compensations and supported by previous observations and numerical modeling results. Electropulsing induced texture evolution in the primary recrystallization of a Fe-3 pct Si alloy strip was studied using the electron backscattered diffraction technique. The results revealed that the electropulsing strengthened considerably the recrystallization of a cold-rolled Fe-3Si alloy strip. Various textures with high-energy storages, such as α (100)〈110〉, γ (111)〈110〉, γ (111)〈112〉, and G-texture (110)〈001〉, formed after several seconds of electropulsing treatment (EPT), depending on the intensity of electropulsing. The athermal effect of electropulsing is 319 times stronger than the thermal effect of electropulsing for the formation of the G texture. Microstructural changes and phase transformations of an electropulsing-treated (EPT) ZA22 alloy wire were studied using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron-microscopy techniques. Two stages of phase transformation were detected in the EPT alloy: (i) quenching from the as furnace-cooled (FC) state to the final stable state and (ii) up-quenching from the final stable state back to the as FC state through two reverse phase transformations: T′ + η → α + ε and η′T + ε + α → η′FC. Electropulsing accelerated phase transformation tremendously. It was at least 1200 times faster than the aging process.
