In Western societies and organizations, episodes of discrimination based on individual demographic and social characteristics still occur. Relevant questions, such as why ethnic discrimination is perpetuated and how people confront it in the workplace, remain open. In this study, we adopt a social-symbolic work perspective to explore how individuals confront workplace ethnic discrimination by both upholding and challenging it. In doing so, we incorporate the perspectives of those directly experiencing, observing and neglecting discrimination. Specifically, we focus on the Italian branches of North American professional service firms (PSFs), performing a qualitative investigation of the worlds of concern among professionals regarding the topic of ethnic discrimination to explore how different backgrounds motivate social-symbolic work. We find that different forms of work are enacted to support the status quo, shape the boundaries of existing organizational practices, and balance professional identities, emotions, and careers to silence episodes of ethnic discrimination. We also highlight cases of 'soft,' yet increasing, work that contests the status quo. Finally, we discuss our results in light of neo-institutional and critical management research to ultimately inspire our focal firms and societies to find alternatives to the rhetoric in the established approaches to inequality. Previous research on parent‒child relationships has focused more extensively on younger, school-aged children and adolescents, with mothers receiving more attention than fathers. In addition, there has been a greater focus on problematic parenting (e.g., helicopter parenting) and less research on supportive forms of parenting that can promote positive outcomes during emerging adulthood. The current study utilized the framework of self-determination theory to examine the association between positive parenting and well-being in a sample of emerging adults. Specifically, we examined the associations between positive maternal and paternal parenting approaches and emerging adults' basic psychological needs and well-being, with a focus on emerging adults of diverse ethnicities. Our primary hypotheses were that positive parenting would have significant: (a) direct associations with emerging adults' basic psychological needs and (b) indirect associations with emerging adults' well-being through their basic psychological needs. The participants were 1209 emerging adults aged 18–22 years (M = 19.27; SD = 1.53). The results revealed that parenting had significant positive direct effects on emerging adults' basic psychological needs and indirect associations with their well-being. These findings suggest that positive parenting continues to play an important role in emerging adulthood and highlight the need to work with emerging adults and their parents to establish strategies to support positive parenting that meet psychological needs during this time of life. A comprehensive survey of the octopus fauna around the Americas is presented to facilitate and accelerate the assessment of a full understanding of American octopus biodiversity. Brief accounts are provided summarizing research efforts on octopus species taxonomy, diversity and distribution in different regions of North and South America. Octopus americanus and O. insularis are compared and clearly distinguished from each other and from the closely-related European species, O. vulgaris. The use of genus names Paroctopus and Pinnoctopus is clarified. Included is a discussion of the recent application of genus name Paroctopus to warm-temperate and tropical species of small size, along with a cautionary note about species identifications in the light of past errors in misassigning large-to-giant cold-water species to genus Paroctopus. Related to problems with identifying species of Paroctopus, there is an appended note concerning misidentifications and the importance of thorough species descriptions to obtain species information at the levels of both phenotype and genotype. A lectotype is formally designated for Bathypolypus arcticus (Prosch, 1849); and the status of so-called 'Octopus giganteus' is reviewed briefly. A supplementary online database, AmeriCeph, provides basic information about all known octopus species of the Americas, including the institutional location of type material and the identification of voucher specimens and their depositories. DNA sequences registered in this database are not all fully compatible with barcoding standards. However, a subset of DNA sequences conforming to strict barcode identifications is provided in a second supplementary table, providing barcode sequences directly applicable also to improving standards of seafood traceability. This in turn contributes to building sustainability of exploited octopus fisheries stocks and identification of species suitable for aquaculture trials to meet the increasing commercial demand for octopus worldwide. Background: Surgical care significantly contributes to healthcare-associated greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Surgeon attitudes about mitigation of the impact of surgical practice on environmental sustainability remains poorly understood. To better understand surgeon perspectives globally, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery established a joint Sustainability in Surgical Practice (SSP) Task Force and distributed a survey on sustainability. Methods: Our survey asked about (1) surgeon attitudes toward sustainability, (2) ability to estimate the carbon footprint of surgical procedures and supplies, (3) concerns about the negative impacts of sustainable interventions, (4) willingness to change specific practices, and (5) preferred educational topics and modalities. Questions were primarily written in Likert-scale format. A clustering analysis was performed to determine whether survey respondents could be grouped into distinct subsets to inform future outreach and education efforts. Results: We received 1024 responses, predominantly from North America and Europe. The study revealed that while 63% of respondents were motivated to enhance the sustainability of their practice, less than 10% could accurately estimate the carbon footprint of surgical activities. Most were not concerned that sustainability efforts would negatively impact their practice and showed readiness to adopt proposed sustainable practices. Online webinars and modules were the preferred educational methods. A clustering analysis identified a group particularly concerned yet willing to adopt sustainable changes. Conclusion: Surgeons believe that operating room waste is a critical issue and are willing to change practice to improve it. However, there exists a gap in understanding the environmental impact of surgical procedures and supplies, and a sizable minority have some degree of concern about potential adverse consequences of implementing sustainable policies. Introduction: In ORAL Surveillance, incidence rates (IRs) of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and malignancies (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer [NMSC]) in cardiovascular (CV)-risk-enriched patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were numerically greater with tofacitinib in North America versus the rest of the world, due to underlying risk factors. Here, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of tofacitinib versus tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi) among patients with RA across geographical regions. Methods: Patients with RA in ORAL Surveillance (NCT02092467), who were aged ≥ 50 years with ≥ 1 additional CV risk factor, received tofacitinib 5 or 10 mg twice daily or TNFi; 45.9% were from either Poland or North America. This post hoc analysis stratified patients by region (Poland, North America, Other countries). Efficacy endpoints included Clinical Disease Activity Index, Disease Activity Score in 28 joints, with C-reactive protein (DAS28-4[CRP]), and Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (HAQ-DI). IRs and hazard ratios for adverse events were reported. Results: Of 4362 patients (Poland, N = 759; North America, N = 1243; Other countries, N = 2360), more patients from North America versus Poland/Other countries had CV risk factors such as body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2 and history of diabetes/hypertension; however, more patients from Poland versus other regions were ever smokers and more patients from Poland/North America versus Other countries had history of coronary artery disease. MACE IRs were similar in North America and Poland, and numerically higher versus Other countries. IRs for malignancies (excluding NMSC) were numerically higher in North America versus Poland/Other countries with tofacitinib. Serious infections IRs were numerically higher in North America versus Poland across treatments. Venous thromboembolism/all-cause mortality IRs were generally comparable across regions. DAS28-4(CRP)/HAQ-DI improvements were generally lowest in North America. Conclusions: Differences in safety outcomes were driven by the presence of baseline risk factors; North America and Poland demonstrated a higher proportion of patients with some baseline CV risk factors/comorbidities versus Other countries. Background and Objective: As the visibility and acceptance of athlete-mothers increase, so does the number of women athletes considering parenthood. Yet, many athletes struggle with the decision to become a parent while competing at the elite level due to the significant changes and uncertainties that have been reported by pregnant and parenting athletes. The experiences of women athletes considering parenthood are under-represented in the vast sport literature but are necessary for developing evidenced-based policies and practices that can support women's equitable participation in high-performance sport contexts. Thus, the purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the experiences of elite women athletes that are considering parenthood. Methods: Participants were ten elite North American athletes (29–36 years) who are considering becoming parents in the next 5 years. Each participant self-identified as a woman and competed at the highest level in their respective sport. Data were generated via one-on-one semi-structured interviews that were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed through a process of content analysis. Results: The experiences of elite women athletes considering parenthood are represented by five themes: (a) calls for essential mandates and leadership, (b) how do you support yourself?, (c) hesitation of body changes, (d) age inequities, and (e) being proactive about reproductive health. Such findings support an in-depth understanding of gender-specific stressors that limit women's equitable participation in high-performance contexts. Conclusion: This research is grounded in the voices of elite women athletes and identifies actionable steps necessary for research and culture change. Background & Aims: Diabetes and related metabolic syndromes represent a significant global health challenge, with the global burden of diabetes increasing considerably since 1990. In this article, we examined the trend of publications in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism between 1996 and 2021, focusing on Asian countries. Methods: We obtained and used the data from the Scopus database from the SCImago website (https://www.scimagojr.com/), on 1 April 2023, related to the subspecialty of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism for country rankings between 1996 and 2021. We did not include any data related to other medical specialties or other fields. Results: There has been a steady rise in global publications on these subspecialties over the past decade, with the number of publications from Asian countries increasing significantly. Western Europe recorded the highest number of publications, followed by North America and Asia. The COVID-19 pandemic also contributed to a surge in publications in this field. In Asian countries, China and India have notably increased their global contribution to publications, with China emerging as the top Asian nation in 2021. Conclusion: Our findings provide valuable insights into the research output from various countries and the productivity trends in Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism-related research. Invasive clonal species may exhibit different growth strategies than their native clonal competitors. In this study, we examined the spatial distribution of tiller outgrowth and the bud bank by comparing the investment in phalanx versus guerilla growth of a native and invasive perennial grass in North America. We also examined the effect of altered precipitation frequency, clipping, and competition on their clonal growth strategies. Investment in phalanx and guerilla growth was assessed by examining live propagule and tiller production from the plant crown versus its rhizomes. Although invasive Bromus inermis and native Pascopyrum smithii exhibited similar clonal growth strategies as young seedlings, their clonal growth strategies significantly differed by the end of their first growing season. Pascopyrum smithii invested in dual phalanx and guerilla tiller outgrowth and bud placement, and B. inermis primarily invested in phalanx tiller outgrowth and bud placement. Competition rather than intra-annual precipitation variability and clipping altered the clonal growth strategy of these species. Intra- and inter- specific competition did not alter tiller outgrowth for either species. However, inter-specific competition caused both species to alter their bud placement. Bromus inermis shifted more buds from phalanx to guerilla positions while P. smithii shifted in the opposite direction. This may enable invasive B. inermis to expand while confining native P. smithii to more localized areas in the future. Clonal growth strategies appear to be species specific and responsive to inter-specific competition. Investigating the belowground bud aspect of clonal growth can reveal the mechanism driving the future aboveground clonal growth strategy of native and invasive rhizomatous grasses and help inform the patterns of invasion within a plant community. Understanding the causes for discrepancies between modelled and observed regional climate trends is important for improving present-day climate simulation and reducing uncertainties in future climate projections. Here, we analyse the performance of coupled climate models in reproducing regional precipitation trends during the satellite era. We find statistically significant observed drying in southwestern North America and wetting in the Amazon during the period 1979–2014. Historical climate model simulations do not capture these observed precipitation trends. We trace this discrepancy to the inability of coupled simulations to capture the observed Pacific trade wind intensification over this period. A linear adjustment of free running historical simulations, based on the observed strengthening of the Pacific trade winds and modeled ENSO teleconnections, explains the discrepancy in precipitation trends. Furthermore, both the Pacific trade wind trends and regional precipitation trends are reproduced in climate simulations with prescribed observed sea surface temperatures (SST), underscoring the role of the tropical Pacific SST patterns. Biological invasions pose a significant threat to ecosystems, disrupting local biodiversity and ecosystem functions. The genomic underpinnings of invasiveness, however, are still largely unknown, making it difficult to predict and manage invasive species effectively. The common reed (Phragmites australis) is a dominant grass species in wetland ecosystems and has become particularly invasive when transferred from Europe to North America. Here, we present a high-quality gap-free, telomere-to-telomere genome assembly of Phragmites australis consisting of 24 pseudochromosomes and a B chromosome. Fully phased subgenomes demonstrated considerable subgenome dominance and revealed the divergence of diploid progenitors approximately 30.9 million years ago. Comparative genomics using chromosome-level scaffolds for three other lineages and a previously published draft genome assembly of an invasive lineage revealed that gene family expansions in the form of tandem duplications may have contributed to the invasiveness of the lineage. This study sheds light on the genome evolution of Arundinoideae grasses and suggests that genetic drivers, such as gene family expansions and tandem duplications, may underly the processes of biological invasion in plants. These findings provide a crucial step toward understanding and managing the genetic basis of invasiveness in plant species. We provide a complete, telomere to telomere gap-free genome assembly for common reed that includes its B chromosome. Background: Hypoparathyroidism is a rare endocrine disease frequently associated with serious physical and cognitive symptoms. This study's purpose was to understand the impacts of the phase 3 PaTHway clinical trial treatment, TransCon PTH, on patients' overall, physical, and cognitive hypoparathyroidism signs/symptoms and what patients consider meaningful improvement. Methods: Individual telephone exit interviews were conducted with patients who recently completed the PaTHway trial blinded period. Using a semi-structured interview guide, interviews focused on trial treatment impact on hypoparathyroidism symptoms following the symptom list in the Hypoparathyroidism Patient Experience Scale-Symptom (HPES-Symptom). Meaningful changes in hypoparathyroidism symptoms were assessed with the Patient Global Impression of Severity (PGIS) and Patient Global Impression of Change (PGIC) measures. Interviewees were probed on the meaningfulness of reported changes in symptoms from prior to starting trial treatment to the past 2 weeks/current time. Interviews were audiotaped and transcribed. Transcripts were coded for emerging concepts and themes/subthemes covered in the interview guide based on an adapted grounded theory approach. Results: Nineteen adults with hypoparathyroidism participated in interviews in the United States (n = 13, 68.4%) and Canada (n = 6, 31.6%). Marked improvements in physical and cognitive symptoms were described among trial treatment group respondents. The majority of participants who reported experiencing hypoparathyroidism physical symptoms pre-trial indicated symptom improvement with treatment, including muscle twitching (100%, n = 15), low energy (92.9%, n = 13), feeling tired (92.3%, n = 12), muscle weakness (92.9%, n = 13), tingling without numbness (84.6%, n = 11), trouble sleeping (92.3%, n = 12), muscle cramping (92.3%, n = 12), tingling with numbness (92.3%, n = 12), muscle spasms (100%, n = 12), and pain (90.9%, n = 10). Most participants who reported experiencing cognitive symptoms pre-trial reported symptom improvement with treatment, including difficulty finding the right words (86.7%, n = 13), difficulty concentrating (93.3%, n = 14), trouble remembering (92.9%, n = 13), trouble thinking clearly (85.7%, n = 12), and difficulty understanding information (83.3%, n = 10). Those in the placebo group reported limited or no improvement. The vast majority of participants affirmed that the improvements they experienced in symptom frequency on the PGIS/PGIC and HPES–Symptom were meaningful. Conclusions: Findings indicate that TransCon PTH treatment improved participants' physical and cognitive hypoparathyroidism symptoms in meaningful ways, while reducing the daily burden associated with conventional therapy. Introduction: To assess differences in the diagnosis journey and access to care in a large sample of patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) from around the world, included in the International Map of Axial Spondyloarthritis (IMAS). Methods: IMAS was a cross-sectional online survey (2017–2022) of 5557 unselected patients with axSpA from 27 countries. Across five worldwide geographic regions, the patient journey until diagnosis and healthcare utilization in the last 12 months prior to survey were evaluated. Univariable and multivariable linear regression was used to analyze factors associated with higher healthcare utilization. Results: Of 5557 participants in IMAS, the diagnosis took an average of 7.4 years, requiring more than two visits to HCPs (77.7% general practitioner and 51.3% rheumatologist), and more than two diagnostic tests [67.5% performed human leukocyte antigen B27 (HLA-B27), 64.2% x-ray, and 59.1% magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans]. North America and Europe were the regions with the highest number of healthcare professional (HCP) visits for diagnosis, while the lowest number of visits was in the Asian region. In the previous 12 months, 94.9% (n = 5272) used at least one healthcare resource, with an average of 29 uses per year. The regions with the highest healthcare utilization were Latin America, Europe, and North America. In the multiple linear regression, factors associated with higher number of healthcare utilization were younger age (b = – 0.311), female gender (b = 7.736), higher disease activity (b = 1.461), poorer mental health (b = 0.624), greater functional limitation (b = 0.300), greater spinal stiffness (b = 1.527), and longer diagnostic delay (b = 0.104). Conclusion: The diagnosis of axSpA usually takes more than two visits to HCPs and at least 7 years. After diagnosis, axSpA is associated with frequent healthcare resource use. Younger age, female gender, higher disease activity, poorer mental health, greater functional limitation, greater spinal stiffness, and longer diagnostic delay are associated with higher healthcare utilization. Evaluating the factors that promote coexistence between ecologically similar species is crucial to understanding the evolution and assembly of herbivore communities. The Jarman–Bell principle presents a trade-off between diet quality and quantity as an axis for dietary niche segregation and has been suggested as a mechanism facilitating species coexistence. This idea holds that larger-bodied herbivores consume greater amounts of relatively low-quality plant resources, while smaller-bodied herbivores typically feed selectively on higher-quality resources. Most studies investigating the Jarman–Bell principle have examined free-living ungulates in African savannas. The diverse ungulate community in Yellowstone National Park, USA offers an opportunity to investigate the applicability of this principle in a temperate North American ecosystem. In this study we use fecal nitrogen (FN) and stable carbon isotope values (δ13C) to examine the relationship between body size and seasonal patterns of dietary niche segregation among five species of wild ungulates. Specifically, we test the predictions that: (1) diet quality decreases with increasing body mass, (2) interspecific differences in diet are greatest between the largest- and smallest-bodied species, and (3) smaller-bodied species have narrower dietary breadth than larger-bodied species. Diet quality, as indicated by digestibility, declined significantly with body mass, consistent with the empirical pattern predicted by the Jarman–Bell hypothesis. Significant interspecific differences in diet quality generally aligned with variation in body mass. When resources were limited during the winter, the relationship between body mass and diet quality was more pronounced, suggesting increased dietary niche segregation during the lean season. The results showed little evidence indicating that dietary breadth scaled allometrically with body mass, as the two species most similar in body mass displayed the greatest and least range of seasonal variation in both FN and δ13C. This study adds to the weight and breadth of evidence that diet quality is negatively correlated with body size in wild ungulate assemblages. Background: Concussions are a public health concern. Underdiagnosis and mismanagement negatively impact patients, risking in persistent symptoms and permanent disability. Objective: This scoping review consolidates the heterogeneous and inconsistent concussion research and identifies key areas for medical education curriculum design to focus on for effective knowledge acquisition and bolstering competency in family physician residency. We analyze the literature on concussion education spanning various healthcare disciplines in North America. Methods: PRISMA-Sc was followed and MEDLINE and EMBASE Classic + EMBASE in the OvidSP search platform were used to find terms for brain concussion AND medical education OR specific education until 2021. Results: There are significant knowledge gaps about concussions, increased clinical exposure is required for competency which bolster physical examination skills and streamlined concussion guidelines are required for family medicine specialists that filter undifferentiated symptoms25% of participants improved adherence to concussion guidelines after an educational intervention and knowledge increased after concussion workshop and clinics. Conclusions: Multifaceted teaching improves concussion diagnosis and management. PIK3CA-related overgrowth spectrum (PROS) is an umbrella term to describe a diverse range of developmental disorders. Research to date has predominantly emerged from Europe and North America, resulting in a notable scarcity of studies focusing on East Asian populations. Currently, the prevalence and distribution of PIK3CA variants across various genetic loci and their correlation with distinct phenotypes in East Asian populations remain unclear. This study aims to elucidate the phenotype-genotype correlations of PROS in East Asian populations. We presented the phenotypes and genotypes of 82 Chinese patients. Among our cohort, 67 individuals carried PIK3CA variants, including missense, frameshift, and splice variants. Six patients presented with both PIK3CA and an additional variant. Seven PIK3CA-negative patients exhibited overlapping PROS manifestations with variants in GNAQ, AKT1, PTEN, MAP3K3, GNA11, or KRAS. An integrative review of the literature pertaining to East Asian populations revealed that specific variants are uniquely associated with certain PROS phenotypes. Some rare variants were exclusively identified in cases of megalencephaly and diffuse capillary malformation with overgrowth. Non-hotspot variants with undefined oncogenicity were more common in CNS phenotypes. Diseases with vascular malformation were more likely to have variants in the helical domain, whereas phenotypes involving adipose/muscle overgrowth without vascular abnormalities predominantly presented variants in the C2 domain. Our findings underscore the unique phenotype-genotype patterns within the East Asian PROS population, highlighting the necessity for an expanded cohort to further elucidate these correlations. How global warming is impacting winter cold extremes is uncertain. Previous work has found decreasing winter temperature variability over North America which suggests a reduction in frequency and intensity of cold extremes relative to mean changes. However, others argue that cold air outbreaks are becoming more likely because of Arctic-induced changes in atmospheric circulation. Here we show that cold extremes over North America have warmed substantially faster than the winter mean temperature since 1980. This amplified warming is linked to both decreasing variance and changes in higher moments of the temperature distributions. Climate model simulations with historical forcings robustly capture the observed trends in extremes and variability. A pattern-based detection and attribution analysis shows that the changes in variability are detectable in observations and can be attributed to human influence. Our results highlight that human emissions are warming North American extreme cold temperatures beyond only shifting the winter mean temperature. This study shows that the coldest winter days over North America are warming faster than the seasonal mean temperatures. Wyeomyia smithii, the pitcher-plant mosquito, has evolved from south to north and from low to high elevations in eastern North America. Along this seasonal gradient, critical photoperiod has increased while apparent involvement of the circadian clock has declined in concert with the evolutionary divergence of populations. Response to classical experiments used to test for a circadian basis of photoperiodism varies as much within and among populations of W. smithii as have been found in the majority of all other insects and mites. The micro-evolutionary processes revealed within and among populations of W. smithii, programmed by a complex underlying genetic architecture, illustrate a gateway to the macro-evolutionary divergence of biological timing among species and higher taxa in general. Background: In the current study, longitudinal BP and lipid measurements were examined in a NEPTUNE cohort of children with newly diagnosed nephrotic syndrome (cNEPTUNE). We hypothesized that hypertensive BP and dyslipidemia would persist in children with nephrotic syndrome, regardless of steroid treatment response. Methods: A multi-center longitudinal observational analysis of data obtained from children < 19 years of age with new onset nephrotic syndrome enrolled in the Nephrotic Syndrome Study Network (cNEPTUNE) was conducted. BP and lipid data were examined over time stratified by disease activity and steroid exposure. Generalized estimating equation regressions were used to find determinants of hypertensive BP and dyslipidemia. Results: Among 122 children, the prevalence of hypertensive BP at any visit ranged from 17.4% to 57.4%, while dyslipidemia prevalence ranged from 40.0% to 96.2% over a median of 30 months of follow-up. Hypertensive BP was found in 46.2% (116/251) of study visits during active disease compared with 31.0% (84/271) of visits while in remission. Dyslipidemia was present in 88.2% (120/136) of study visits during active disease and in 66.0% (101/153) while in remission. Neither dyslipidemia nor hypertensive BP were significantly different with/without medication exposure (steroids and/or CNI). In regression analysis, male sex and urine protein:creatinine ratio (UPC) were significant determinants of hypertensive BP over time, while eGFR was found to be a determinant of dyslipidemia over time. Conclusions: Results demonstrate persistent hypertensive BPs and unfavorable lipid profiles in the cNEPTUNE cohort regardless of remission status or concurrent steroid or calcineurin inhibitor treatment. More than 5 billion people in the world own a smartphone. More than half of these have been used to collect and process health-related data. As such, the existing volume of potentially exploitable health data is unprecedentedly large and growing rapidly. Mobile health applications (apps) on smartphones are some of the worst offenders and are increasingly being used for gathering and exchanging significant amounts of personal health data from the public. This data is often utilized for health research purposes and for algorithm training. While there are advantages to utilizing this data for expanding health knowledge, there are associated risks for the users of these apps, such as privacy concerns and the protection of their data. Consequently, gaining a deeper comprehension of how apps collect and crowdsource data is crucial. To explore how apps are crowdsourcing data and to identify potential ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI), we conducted an examination of the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store in North America and Europe to identify apps that could potentially gather health data through crowdsourcing. Subsequently, we analyzed their privacy policies, terms of use, and other related documentation to gain insights into the utilization of users' data and the possibility of repurposing it for research or algorithm training purposes. More specifically, we reviewed privacy policies to identify clauses pertaining to the following key categories: research, data sharing, privacy/confidentiality, commercialization, and return of findings. Based on the results of these app search, we developed an App Atlas that presents apps which crowdsource data for research or algorithm training. We identified 46 apps available in the European and Canadian markets that either openly crowdsource health data for research or algorithm training or retain the legal or technical capability to do so. This app search showed an overall lack of consistency and transparency in privacy policies that poses challenges to user comprehensibility, trust, and informed consent. A significant proportion of applications presented contradictions or exhibited considerable ambiguity. For instance, the vast majority of privacy policies in the App Atlas contain ambiguous or contradictory language regarding the sharing of users' data with third parties. This raises a number of ethico-legal concerns which will require further academic and policy attention to ensure a balance between protecting individual interests and maximizing the scientific utility of crowdsourced data. This study examines the recovery of late-successional forests in the Acadian Forest Region of northeastern North America after anthropogenic canopy disturbance. Tree species were sampled in a chronosequence of post-clearcut (3–54 years) and remnant late-successional forests (100–165 years) in four demographic size classes in Nova Scotia, Canada: seedlings, small saplings, large saplings, and canopy trees. Clearcut forests acquired late-successional canopy species composition within five decades after logging disturbance. Resilience to clearcutting was due principally to the persistence of residual shade-tolerant coniferous species, mostly red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) and eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carrière) in recovering stands. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that most residual canopy species responded positively to canopy removal as small saplings, but not as seedlings. Seedlings of all residual canopy species exhibited strong associations with stand age, canopy cover, and microhabitats characteristic of older forests, such as rotting logs and smaller pieces of decayed wood. These results show that managed late-successional Acadian forests can recover quickly after clearcutting if advance tree regeneration (seedlings and saplings) is present and protected in the understory during canopy removal. Such Careful Logging methods focused on advance regeneration remain under-utilized in Acadian forests, though our results indicate they could better address silvicultural objectives such as maintaining a viable conifer component throughout stand development, as well as broader biodiversity goals in the management of late-successional forest types. Introduction: The treatment of closed humeral shaft fractures tends to be successful with functional bracing. Treatment failure due to iatrogenic conversion to an open fracture has not been described in the literature. We present a case series of patients that experienced open humeral shaft fractures after initially being treated with functional bracing for closed humeral shaft fractures and describe what factors are associated with this complication. Materials and methods: This was a retrospective case series performed at three level 1 trauma centers across North America. All nonoperatively treated humeral shaft fractures were reviewed from 2001 to 2023. Patients were included if they sustained a humeral shaft fracture, > 18 years old, were initially treated non-operatively with functional bracing which subsequently converted to an open fracture. Eight patients met inclusion criteria. All included patients were eventually treated with irrigation, debridement, and open reduction and internal fixation. Outcomes assessed included mortality rate, time until the fracture converted from closed to open, need for further surgery, and bony union. Descriptive statistics were used in analysis. Results: The eight included patients on average were 65 ± 21.4 years old and had a body mass index (BMI) of 25.6 ± 5.2. Six patients were initially injured due to a fall. Time until the fractures became open on average was 5.2 ± 3.6 weeks. Three patients (37.5%) died within 1.8 ± 0.6 years after initial injury. The average Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) score was 4.5 ± 3.4. Three patients (37.5%) had dementia. Common characteristics among this cohort included a history of visual disturbances (50.0%), cerebrovascular accident (50.0%), smoking (50.0%), and alcohol abuse (50.0%). Conclusion: Conversion from a closed to open humeral shaft fracture after functional bracing is a potentially devastating complication. Physicians should be especially cognizant of patients with a low BMI, history of falling or visual disturbance, dementia, age ≥ 65, decreased sensorimotor protection, and significant smoking or alcohol history when choosing to use functional bracing as the final treatment modality. American shad (Alosa sapidissima) are an anadromous fish species native to North America that have an extensive range, but their populations are declining. Acoustic telemetry can play a vital role in better understanding the behavior and survival of this sensitive species, but successfully handling and tagging juvenile American shad can be challenging. We conducted several experiments to determine the best methods for collecting, transporting, holding, and tagging juvenile shad. Minimizing out-of-water handling and the use of a saltwater treatment during collection increased 24 h survival from 78 to 99% after transport. Saltwater was also fundamental in keeping tagged shad alive overnight. Shad as small as 50 mm, were implanted with a dummy acoustic transmitter using a pectoral incision method with no suture. In a 60 d holding evaluation, the tagged fish survived at a rate comparable to their non-tagged counterparts (81.5% for tagged, 70% for untagged). Tagged and untagged shad also had similar survival when exposed to a tank of predators. Objective: The "fall armyworm" also known as Spodoptera frugiperda, is a maize pest that is native to North America. It invaded Africa in 2016 and caused serious economic damage, forcing the continent's nations to take swift action to fend off this new invading pest. It is urgently necessary to produce powerful insecticides for the efficient management of this insect pest since this parasite is a novel invading species and its resistance to insecticides has to be investigated. Methods: The synthesized thiazole-owing hydrazone derivatives are the subject of the first study on the harmful effects they cause, followed by structural relationships. Following the stated protocols, four molecules of thiazole-owing hydrazone derivatives were synthesized as pure active ingredients, and their efficacy as potential insecticides against S. frugiperda was tested. Results and Discussion: The toxicity data exhibited that compound (V) with LC50 of 13.66 and 106.25 ppm was more toxic against the 2nd and 4th larvae instars, respectively, than other synthesized compounds; the other screened compounds showed weak to strong toxicological activity against S. frugiperda. A molecular docking investigation of four synthetic compounds (III–VI) was performed against acetylcholinesterase (AChE). The molecular docking results revealed that compound (V) has the more negative docking score and best binding (docking score = –9.01 kcal/mol), followed by compounds (III), (IV), and (VI) with docking scores of –8.76, –8.53, and –7.41 kcal/mol, respectively. The protein-ligand docking postures revealed that these substances exhibited a strong affinity for the target enzyme's active site (Protein Data Bank ID: 2ACE). This work suggests that these substances may have insecticidal and AChE inhibitory properties, and it may be possible to further explore them in the process of creating pesticides that target AChE. A record-setting extreme heatwave occurred over western North America (WNA) in the summer of 2021, which was associated with an extreme atmospheric Rossby wave ridge (ARR) over WNA and a minimum record event of the preceding winter Barents Sea ice concentration. We identify the remote effect and investigate how the Barents Sea ice loss (BSIL) in the preceding winter relates to the intensity of the ARR and extreme heatwaves in the following June and July (JJ) by analyzing the reanalysis data. Our results suggest that the atmospheric wave activity flux associated with the BSIL transferred wave energy towards the circumglobal teleconnection (CGT)-like wave trains, increasing the wave amplitude and enhancing the ARR over WNA. The anomalous sea ice melting in JJ, originating from the BSIL in the preceding winter through ocean-air-sea ice positive feedback processes, also induces a northward shift of jet stream by meridional temperature gradient change. The weakening of the local jet from the original jet axis area drives anticyclonic anomalies which increases atmospheric subsidence and shortwave radiation. The energy is transferred from the weakened jet to synoptic-scale disturbances via wave-current interaction. The northward jet as a waveguide causes the CGT to shift northward and receive signals from the higher latitude. Both the CGT-like wave trains and the shifted jet streams synergistically contribute to the increase of ARR intensity and the frequency of extreme heatwaves. Overall, the BSIL will serve as an early predictor for properly forecasting the extreme heatwaves over WNA six months in advance, which potentially improves the prediction skills. To investigate the response of ionosphere to strong geomagnetic storms at different latitudes, this paper focuses on the response characteristics of global ionospheric ROTI at different latitudes during the September 2017 strong geomagnetic storms based on global ROTI maps and GPS dual-frequency observation data, and explores the PPP accuracy of GPS stations at each latitude during two different types of strong geomagnetic storms. The results show that (i) the daily mean ROTI values during the September 2017 strong geomagnetic storms show a spatial distribution of higher in the global region in the high-latitude region of North America, the northern European region and the whole Antarctic region, and lower in other regions. (ii) The highest ROTI time mean value in the high-latitude belt, with a peak value of 0.30 TECU/min, exceeds twice the peak value of the global time mean value; within the mid-latitude belt, the ROTI time mean value in the northern hemisphere is larger, with values exceeding three times those of the Southern Hemisphere. (iii) During the strong geomagnetic storm in September 2017, the PPP results of high-latitude GPS stations were affected to a greater extent, and the mean value of positioning error in the vertical direction exceeded 2.0 m. (iv) During the strong geomagnetic storm in November 2021, the changing trend of the mean value of PPP positioning error at different latitudes was consistent with that of 2017, but the mean value of positioning error and RMS at high latitudes in 2021 was higher than those in 2017. Purpose: Incorporating surgical skills education in trauma care is essential for young surgeons and surgical trainees. This study describes an innovative e-learning course for teaching trauma care surgical skills in an international cooperative setting. Furthermore, it aims to offer valuable insights on enhancing e-learning practices. Methods: The Panamerican Trauma Society and the Spanish Surgical Association have joined forces to launch an online course focusing on advanced trauma care surgical skills. This report provides an in-depth examination of the project and scrutinizes participant feedback through a post-course survey. The survey thoroughly evaluates their satisfaction level, the usefulness of the course content, and their view on its clinical relevance. Results: Three hundred eighty-two surgeons from 16 countries completed an online course. Three hundred seventy-nine of them responded to the post-course survey. The mean age was 36, with 64% females and 36% males. The course consisted of 9.9 h of academic content, including 5 h of video lectures and 4.9 h of live discussions. Ninety-seven percent of the participants were practicing general and acute care surgeons, and only 2% were exclusively dedicated to trauma surgery. Sixty-one percent of participants highly valued real-time interaction with faculty, and 95% believed their trauma surgical skills would improve. Additionally, 93% of the participants were satisfied or very satisfied with the e-learning experience. Conclusions: The use of video-based instructional materials has revolutionized surgical education. With online courses in trauma surgery, surgeons can now improve their skills and better prepare themselves to handle severe trauma cases. Among the Pacific Northwest Coast Indians of North America before and during the extended era of European contact, a pervasive institution known as the potlatch governed human relations through reciprocity rather than the hierarchical state. Potlatching involved recurring intertribal feasting, gift giving, ceremonial dance, storytelling, oratory, dispute resolution, declarations of claim or right, and some measure of property destruction. The tribes referred to this network of publicly declared favors given and owed and promises made and received as their customary "potlatch law." Like law in the Western world, it was the foundation on which their economies rested. The potlatch memorialized obligations, enforced property rights, insured against risk, promoted knowledge accumulation, supplied investment capital, and served as a system of fractional reserve banking. Monitoring methane emissions is crucial in mitigating climate change as it has a relatively short atmospheric lifetime of about 12 years and a significant radiative forcing impact. To measure the impact of methane-controlling policies and techniques, a deep understanding of methane emissions is of great importance. Remote sensing offers scalable approaches for monitoring methane emissions at various scales, from point-source high-resolution monitoring to regional and global estimates. The TROPOMI satellite instrument provides daily XCH4 data globally, offering the opportunity to monitor methane at a moderate spatial resolution with an acceptable level of sensitivity. To infer emissions from TROPOMI data, we used the prior emission estimates from global and national inventories and the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model to simulate atmospheric methane along with actual observations of TROPOMI. In this study, methane emissions from Toronto, Montreal, New York, Los Angeles, Houston, and Mexico City have been estimated using the analytical solution of Bayesian inversion using the cloud-based Integrated Methane Inversion (IMI) framework. Using the result from ensemble inversions, and city boundaries, the average total emissions were as follows: Toronto 230.52 Gg a−1, Montreal 111.54 Gg a−1, New York 144.38 Gg a−1, Los Angeles 207.03 Gg a−1, Houston 650.16 Gg a−1, and Mexico City 280.81 Gg a−1. The resulting gridded scale factors ranged from 0.22 to 6.2, implying methane prior emission underestimations in most of these cities. The Northern Hemisphere temperate forests exhibit a disjunct distributional pattern in Europe, North America, and East Asia. Here, to reveal the promoter of intercontinental disjunct distribution, Fraxinus was used as a model organism to integrate abundant fossil evidence with high-resolution phylogenies in a phytogeographic analysis. We constructed a robust phylogenetic tree using genomic data, reconstructed the geographic ancestral areas, and evaluated the effect of incorporating fossil information on the reconstructed biogeographic history. The phylogenetic relationships of Fraxinus were highly resolved and divided into seven clades. Fraxinus originated in western North America during Eocene, and six intercontinental dispersal events and five intercontinental vicariance events were occured. Results suggest that climate change and vicariance contributed to the intercontinental disjunct distribution pattern of Fraxinus. Moreover, results highlight the necessity of integrating phylogenetic relationship and fossil to improve the reliability of inferred biogeographic events and our understanding of the processes underlying disjunct distributions. Purpose: To identify key components and variations in family-centered care practices. Methods: A cross-sectional study, conducted across ESICM members. Participating ICUs completed a questionnaire covering general ICU characteristics, visitation policies, team-family interactions, and end-of-life decision-making. The primary outcome, self-rated family-centeredness, was assessed using a visual analog scale. Additionally, respondents completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Ethical Decision Making Climate Questionnaire to capture burnout dimensions and assess the ethical decision-making climate. Results: The response rate was 53% (respondents from 359/683 invited ICUs who actually open the email); participating healthcare professionals (HCPs) were from Europe (62%), Asia (9%), South America (6%), North America (5%), Middle East (4%), and Australia/New Zealand (4%). The importance of family-centeredness was ranked high, median 7 (IQR 6–8) of 10 on VAS. Significant differences were observed across quartiles of family centeredness, including in visitation policies availability of a waiting rooms, family rooms, family information leaflet, visiting hours, night visits, sleep in the ICU, and in team-family interactions, including daily information, routine day-3 conference, and willingness to empower nurses and relatives. Higher family centeredness correlated with family involvement in rounds, participation in patient care and end-of-life practices. Burnout symptoms (41% of respondents) were negatively associated with family-centeredness. Ethical climate and willingness to empower nurses were independent predictors of family centeredness. Conclusions: This study emphasizes the need to prioritize healthcare providers' mental health for enhanced family-centered care. The northern giant hornet Vespa mandarinia (NGH) is a voracious predator of other insect species, including honey bees. NGH's native range spans subtropical and temperate regions across much of east and southeast Asia and, in 2019, exotic populations of the species were discovered in North America. Despite this broad range and invasive potential, investigation of the population genomic structure of NGH across its native and introduced ranges has thus far been limited to a small number of mitochondrial samples. Here, we present analyses of genomic data from NGH individuals collected across the species' native range and from exotic individuals collected in North America. We provide the first survey of whole-genome population variation for any hornet species, covering this species' native and invasive ranges, and in doing so confirm likely origins in Japan and South Korea for the two introductions. We additionally show that, while this introduced population exhibited strongly elevated levels of inbreeding, these signatures of inbreeding are also present in some long-standing native populations, which may indicate that inbreeding depression alone is insufficient to prevent the persistence of NGH populations. As well as highlighting the importance of ongoing monitoring and eradication efforts to limit the spread of this species outside of its natural range, our data will serve as a foundational database for future genomic studies into introduced hornet populations. Background: Coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) has disproportionately affected adults with kidney disease. Data regarding outcomes among children with kidney disease are limited. The North American Pediatric Renal Trials Collaborative Studies Registry (NAPRTCS) has followed children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) since 1987 at 87 participating centers. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 among participants enrolled in the three arms of the registry: CKD, dialysis, and transplant. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of COVID-19 among participants in the NAPRTCS CKD, dialysis, and transplant registries from 2020 to 2022. Where appropriate, t-tests, chi-square analyses, and univariate logistic regression were used to evaluate the data. Results: The cohort included 1505 NAPRTCS participants with recent data entry; 260 (17%) had documented COVID-19. Infections occurred in all three registry arms, namely, 10% (n = 29) in CKD, 11% (n = 67) in dialysis, and 26% (n = 164) in transplant. The majority of participants (75%) were symptomatic. Hospitalizations occurred in 17% (n = 5) of participants with CKD, 27% (n = 18) maintenance dialysis participants, and 26% (n = 43) of transplant participants. Fourteen percent (n = 4) of CKD participants and 10% (n = 17) of transplant participants developed acute kidney injury (AKI), and a total of eight participants (one CKD, seven transplant) required dialysis initiation. Among transplant participants with moderate to severe illness, 40–43% developed AKI and 29–40% required acute dialysis. There were no reported deaths. Conclusions: COVID-19 was documented in 17% of active NAPRTCS participants. Ammonites of the subfamily Collignoniceratinae have been found in the Turonian Stage of Western Siberia. These findings have made it possible to substantiate the Collignoniceras woollgari zone in the Middle Turonian of this region, to recognize the ammonite dispersal features in the Arctic region, and to clarify the paleogeography of the Turonian age. Based on the occurrence frequency of Collignoniceras woollgari regulare in the boreholes in the north of Western Siberia, their penetration into the West Siberian basin through the Arctic region from the Western Interior Sea of North America is most likely. Asexuality studies are an emerging field in North America and Europe which lack large-scale, qualitative studies. Much existing research focuses on defining and categorizing asexuality, with researchers calling for more focus on the romantic and sexual relationships of asexual people. Drawing from an online survey with 349 participants, this paper describes the perceptions and experiences that asexual people have with dating and relationships. Participants answered 16 open-ended and 9 close-ended questions. After rounds of coding, three themes were selected for examination. These were dating, romantic and/or sexual relationships, and platonic relationships. These results showcase the challenges asexuals face with dating while also demonstrating how asexual people actively dismantle understandings of romantic, sexual, and platonic relationships through their own experiences and perspectives. El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-related sea surface temperature variability in the eastern equatorial Pacific drives an extratropical large-scale atmospheric response. The atmospheric response is a key driver of global climate variability, with the strongest impact occurring during Northern Hemisphere winter. The degree to which atmospheric circulation variability is altered during ENSO events, in comparison with atmospheric circulation variability during ENSO-neutral conditions, is the focus of this study. Two multi-century, CESM1-CAM4 simulations are compared: a fully coupled experiment (CTRL), and a partially decoupled experiment in which ENSO is dynamically suppressed (NoENSO) so that the mean state is not biased towards a particular ENSO phase. We present evidence that the rectification of ENSO and its teleconnections onto the mean state lead to an underestimation of the asymmetry of ENSO teleconnections in this model. Analyses also show that ENSO displaces 500 hPa geopotential height (Z500) variability away from the central northern U.S. and southern Canada, resulting in less variability during ENSO years than ENSO-neutral years. Additionally, we find that estimating the ENSO-forced change in Z500 variance compared to ENSO-neutral years requires a surprisingly large sample of ENSO-neutral years. The results imply that a substantially longer record–roughly an order of magnitude longer in length–is needed to fully capture the statistics of ENSO's teleconnected impacts over North America than suggested in previous studies. Proficient reading requires critical phonological processing skill that interacts with both genetic and environmental factors. However, the precise nature of the relationships between phonological processing and genetic and environmental factors are poorly understood. We analyzed data from the Genes, Reading and Dyslexia (GRaD) Study on 1419 children ages 8–15 years from African-American and Hispanic-American family backgrounds living in North America. The analyses showed that phonological awareness mediated the relationship between DCDC2-READ1 and reading outcomes when parental education and socioeconomic status was low. The association between READ1 and reading performance is complex, whereby mediation by phonological awareness was significantly moderated by both parental education and socioeconomic status. These results show the importance of home environment and phonological skills when determining associations between READ1 and reading outcomes. Information on juvenile alewife use of estuaries is limited on the east coast of North America. In this study, we collected juvenile alewife from the Penobscot River estuary, Maine, and measured stable isotope values from their muscle and liver tissues, which have a low and high turnover rate (respectively). These values were compared to the stable isotope values of preferred prey taxa collected from three distinctly different isotopic habitats within the Penobscot River watershed to estimate the amount of time fish had spent in the estuary. Fish were collected in spring, summer, and autumn in 2013 and 2014 at seven fixed collection sites in the estuary, from four freshwater lakes, and from five bay locations. Based on the δ13C values of muscle and liver tissue, estuarine caught juvenile alewife were assigned to one of the following distinctly different isotopic habitat groups: freshwater transient (recently from freshwater), bay transient (recently from the bay), or estuarine occupant (spent extended time in the estuary). Stable isotope ratios of nitrogen (for all samples) and sulfur (in muscle tissues of a subset of 17 samples) were analyzed to confirm habitat group designations. Bay transients had 37% and 15% higher sulfur and nitrogen isotope ratio values than estuarine occupants and five times more sulfur and almost two times more nitrogen isotope ratio values than freshwater transients. Of 88 juvenile alewife analyzed for carbon isotopes, 32% were identified as estuarine occupants that had spent extended time periods in the estuary, whereas 68% of juvenile alewife had recently moved from bay or freshwater habitats. Mean number of days that juvenile alewife spent in the estuary was highest in spring and declined over time, with more movement occurring in autumn. This result suggests that movement of juvenile alewife between bay and estuary occurs frequently from May to October. Juvenile alewife may use estuarine and nearshore habitats for extended time periods, and migration between estuarine and bay habitats may not follow typical life history strategies. Background: Ultra-endurance events are gaining popularity in multiple exercise disciplines, including cycling. With increasing numbers of ultra-cycling events, aspects influencing participation and performance are of interest to the cycling community. Main body: The aim of this narrative review was, therefore, to assess the types of races offered, the characteristics of the cyclists, the fluid and energy balance during the race, the body mass changes after the race, and the parameters that may enhance performance based on existing literature. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar using the search terms 'ultracycling', 'ultra cycling', 'ultra-cycling', 'ultra-endurance biking', 'ultra-bikers' and 'prolonged cycling'. The search yielded 948 results, of which 111 were relevant for this review. The studies were classified according to their research focus and the results were summarized. The results demonstrated changes in physiological parameters, immunological and oxidative processes, as well as in fluid and energy balance. While the individual race with the most published studies was the Race Across America, most races were conducted in Europe, and a trend for an increase in European participants in international races was observed. Performance seems to be affected by characteristics such as age and sex but not by anthropometric parameters such as skin fold thickness. The optimum age for the top performance was around 40 years. Most participants in ultra-cycling events were male, but the number of female athletes has been increasing over the past years. Female athletes are understudied due to their later entry and less prominent participation in ultra-cycling races. A post-race energy deficit after ultra-cycling events was observed. Conclusion: Future studies need to investigate the causes for the observed optimum race age around 40 years of age as well as the optimum nutritional supply to close the observed energy gap under consideration of the individual race lengths and conditions. Another research gap to be filled by future studies is the development of strategies to tackle inflammatory processes during the race that may persist in the post-race period. The gravity anomalies reflect density perturbations at different depths, which control the physical state and dynamics of the lithosphere and sub-lithospheric mantle. However, the gravity effect of the crust masks the mantle signals. In this study, we develop two frameworks (correction with density contrasts and actual densities) to calculate the gravity anomalies generated by the layered crust. We apply the proposed approaches to evaluate the global mantle gravity disturbances based on the new crustal models. Consistent patterns and an increasing linear trend of the mantle gravity disturbances with lithospheric thickness and Vs velocities at 150 km depth are obtained. Our results indicate denser lithospheric roots in most cratons and lighter materials in the oceanic mantle. Furthermore, our gravity map corresponds well to regional geological features, providing new insights into mantle structure and dynamics. Specifically, (1) reduced anomalies associated with the Superior and Rae cratons indicate more depleted roots compared with other cratons of North America. (2) Negative anomalies along the Cordillera (western North America) suggest mass deficits owing to the buoyant hot mantle. (3) Positive anomalies in the Baltic, East European, and Siberian cratons support thick, dense lithosphere with significant density heterogeneities, which could result from thermo-chemical modifications of the cratonic roots. (4) Pronounced positive anomalies correspond to stable blocks, e.g., Arabian Platform, Indian Craton, and Tarim basin, indicating a thick, dense lithosphere. (5) Low anomalies in the active tectonic units and back-arc basins suggest local mantle upwellings. The limitations and disadvantages of opioids in anesthesia are very well known but the advantages combined with a lack of effective alternatives even now still prevents refraining from using opioids as part of an adequate pain therapy. For decades, pain research has had the declared goal of replacing opioids with new substances which have no serious side effects; however, currently this goal seems to be a long way off. Due to the media coverage of the "opioid crisis" in North America, the use of opioids for pain management is also increasingly being questioned by the patients. Measures to contain this crisis are only slowly taking effect in view of the increasing number of deaths, which is why the triggers are still being sought. The perioperative administration of opioids is not only a possible gateway to addiction and abuse but it can also cause outcome-relevant complications, such as respiratory depression, postoperative nausea and vomiting and an increase in postoperative pain. Therefore, these considerations gave rise to the idea of an opioid-free anesthesia (OFA), i.e., opioids are not administered as part of anesthesia to carry out surgical procedures. Although this idea may make sense at first glance, a rapid introduction of this concept appears to be risky as it entails significant changes for the entire anesthesiological management. Based on relatively robust data from clinical studies, this concept can now be evaluated and discussed not only emotionally but also objectively. This review article presents arguments for or against the complete avoidance of intraoperative or even perioperative opioids. The current conditions in Germany are primarily taken into account, so that the perioperative pain therapy is transferable to the established standards. Suicide among American Muslims is understudied, despite recent research highlighting increased suicide attempts among this population. While suicide is forbidden in Islam, formal guidelines for addressing and responding to suicide within Muslim communities did not exist until recently. The Stanford Muslim Mental Health and Islamic Psychology Lab has responded to a number of suicides in Muslim communities across North America and implemented an original model for suicide response and community healing. This approach incorporates Islamic principles and values to create a culturally and religiously congruent response to suicide that can support loss survivors and steer impacted communities toward healing. The Muslim Postvention Community Healing session described in this paper aims to provide a safe space for individuals impacted by suicide to come together and process their emotions, while also using Islamic teachings to guide the healing process. This unique model has the potential to serve as a valuable resource for Muslim communities across North America, and beyond, in addressing and responding to suicide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Great Lakes region of North America has warmed by 1–2 °C on average since pre-industrial times, with the most pronounced changes observable during winter and spring. Interannual variability in temperatures remains high, however, due to the influence of ocean-atmosphere circulation patterns that modulate the warming trend across years. Variations in spring temperatures determine growing season length and plant phenology, with implications for whole ecosystem function. Studying how both internal climate variability and the "secular" warming trend interact to produce trends in temperature is necessary to estimate potential ecological responses to future warming scenarios. This study examines how external anthropogenic forcing and decadal-scale variability influence spring temperatures across the western Great Lakes region and estimates the sensitivity of regional forests to temperature using long-term growth records from tree-rings and satellite data. Using a modeling approach designed to test for regime shifts in dynamic time series, this work shows that mid-continent spring climatology was strongly influenced by the 1976/1977 phase change in North Pacific atmospheric circulation, and that regional forests show a strengthening response to spring temperatures during the last half-century. The authors expand upon topics such as the harms inflicted upon Indigenous Peoples, conflicting worldviews and values systems between Indigenous Peoples' cultures and the dominant Western culture, and the differences in scientific and economic paradigms. Understanding the many ways closely related species are adapted to coexist is fundamental for maintaining biologically diverse ecological communities. We used carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) stable isotopes of hair and nail tissue to quantify overlap in dietary niche among American mink (Neogale vison von Schreber, 1776), American marten (Martes americana Turton, 1806), short-tailed weasel (Mustela erminea Linnaeus, 1758), and North American river otter (Lontra canadensis Schreber, 1777), and to quantify seasonal variation in diet among mink and marten. We collected tissue samples from the four species between 2015 and 2017 across an 18,000 km2 area in central British Columbia, Canada. We hypothesised that the dietary niche breadth of the mustelid species would scale with body size. Standard ellipses suggested that mink had the broadest dietary niche and the only one that overlapped with all other species. Among marten, there was evidence of shifts in diet resulting from seasonal changes in the consumption of vertebrate prey. Marten and weasel occupied approximately the same isotopic space and their niches were contained fully within that of mink. Our results suggested that the coexistence of mink, marten, weasel, and river otter was driven in part by dietary niche partitioning. Differences in realized niche along spatial or temporal resource axes may have further contributed to preventing competitive exclusion among these closely related species. Although dietary analyses can provide insights on some components of interspecific competition, future investigations should include measures of spatial and temporal overlap in resource use. Large-scale marine heatwaves in the Northeast Pacific (NEP), identified here and previously as 'warm blobs', have devastating impacts on regional ecosystems. An anomalous atmospheric ridge over the NEP is known to be crucial for maintaining these warm blobs, also causing abnormally cold temperatures over North America during the cold season. Previous studies linked this ridge to teleconnections from tropical sea surface temperature anomalies. However, it was unclear whether teleconnections from the extratropics could also contribute to the ridge. Here we show that planetary wave trains, triggered by increased rainfall and latent heat release over the Mediterranean Sea accompanied by decreased rainfall over the North Atlantic, can transport wave energy to the NEP, guided by the westerly jet, and induce a quasi-barotropic ridge there. Our findings provide insights into extratropical teleconnections sustaining the NEP ridge, offering a source of potential predictability for the warm blobs and temperature fluctuations over North America. Atmospheric wave trains, triggered by increased rainfall over the Mediterranean and decreased rainfall over the North Atlantic, can induce a high-pressure anomaly over the Northeast Pacific, which is crucial for warm blob development in the cold season. Literature review suggests that studies on biomedical waste generation and disposal behaviors in North America are limited. Given the infectious nature of the materials, effective biomedical waste management is vital to the public health and safety of the residents. This study explicitly examines seasonal variations of treated biomedical waste (TBMW) disposal rates in the City of Regina, Canada, from 2013 to 2022. Immediately before the onset of COVID-19, the City exhibited a steady pattern of TBMW disposal rate at about 6.6 kg∙capita−1∙year−1. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated lockdowns brought about an abrupt and persistent decline in TBMW disposal rates. Inconsistent fluctuations in both magnitude and variability of the monthly TBMW load weights were also observed. The TBMW load weight became particularly variable in 2020, with an interquartile range 4 times higher than 2019. The average TBMW load weight was also the lowest (5.1 tonnes∙month−1∙truckload−1) in 2020, possibly due to an overall decline in non-COVID-19 medical emergencies, cancellation of elective surgeries, and availability of telehealth options to residents. In general, the TBMW disposal rates peaked during the summer and fall seasons. The day-to-day TBMW disposal contribution patterns between the pre-pandemic and post-pandemic are similar, with 97.5% of total TBMW being disposed of on fixed days. Results from this Canadian case study indicate that there were observable temporal changes in TBMW disposal behaviors during and after the COVID-19 lockdowns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The evolutionary transition to powered flight remains controversial in bats, the only flying mammals. We applied aerodynamic modeling to reconstruct flight in the oldest complete fossil bat, the archaic Onychonycteris finneyi from the early Eocene of North America. Results indicate that Onychonycteris was capable of both gliding and powered flight either in a standard normodense aerial medium or in the hyperdense atmosphere that we estimate for the Eocene from two independent palaeogeochemical proxies. Aerodynamic continuity across a morphological gradient is further demonstrated by modeled intermediate forms with increasing aspect ratio (AR) produced by digital elongation based on chiropteran developmental data. Here a gliding performance gradient emerged of decreasing sink rate with increasing AR that eventually allowed applying available muscle power to achieve level flight using flapping, which is greatly facilitated in hyperdense air. This gradient strongly supports a gliding (trees-down) transition to powered flight in bats. Aerodynamic modeling based on the primitive, early Eocene bat Onychonycteris strongly supports a gliding transition to powered flight in mammals, which is facilitated under the hyperdense atmospheric conditions here inferred for the fossil age.
