PLATONIC love , *INTERNET pornography , *HUMAN sexuality - Abstract
The article sets out to show how an holistic approach in matters of sexuality is always more helpful than one-sided approaches. On the issue of internet pornography, the authors suggest that the recent anti-masturbation online movement 'no fapping' is based on wrong conclusions from insufficient evidence. We suggest that a holistic approach is called for, with emphasis on the embodied human. Abstinence or what is understood by 'Platonic love' is not a solution, according to Plato himself. From a phenomenological perspective, we suggest owning up to our strange bodies and habitualising sexual activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

REGIONALISM , *PHENOMENOLOGY ,URBAN ecology (Sociology) - Abstract
For the people of Vilnius, it is helpful to consider its image in the eyes of strangers. They reflect the strangeness of Vilnius itself. The concept of strangeness will be developed by considering the related spectrum of these strangers' acquaintance with the city. We consider images of Vilnius formed by noteworthy Europeans who passed through there or spent some part of their life there, such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Romain Gary, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Lev Tolstoy, Josif Brodsky, Mikhail Bakhtin, Vladimir Toporov, Aron Gurwitsch, and Czesław Miłosz. For some of them (Napoleon, F. Dostoyevsky), Vilnius was strange as a not yet assimilated territory. For others (L. Tolstoy, J. Brodsky), Vilnius was an important point of transition between geopolitical spheres. For some of them (R. Gary, M. Bakhtin), Vilnius was the environment of their maturation and a springboard to other cities. Vilnius has also been a city of studies and science (for J. G. A. Forster, Cz. Miłosz), a city that formed philosophical attitudes (M. Bakhtin, A. Gurwitsch), and a city of heritages: Russian (for F. Dostoyevsky, L. Tolstoy), Polish (Cz. Miłosz), German (A. Döblin, J. G. A. Forster), Jewish (A. Gurwitsch), pagan (V. Toporov). By appealing to the above mentioned images, the paper deals with philosophical aspects of strangeness, regionalism, and urban environments. One of the key challenges for nuclear physics today is to understand from first principles the effective interaction between hadrons with different quark content. First successes have been achieved using techniques that solve the dynamics of quarks and gluons on discrete space-time lattices1,2. Experimentally, the dynamics of the strong interaction have been studied by scattering hadrons off each other. Such scattering experiments are difficult or impossible for unstable hadrons3–6 and so high-quality measurements exist only for hadrons containing up and down quarks7. Here we demonstrate that measuring correlations in the momentum space between hadron pairs8–12 produced in ultrarelativistic proton–proton collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) provides a precise method with which to obtain the missing information on the interaction dynamics between any pair of unstable hadrons. Specifically, we discuss the case of the interaction of baryons containing strange quarks (hyperons). We demonstrate how, using precision measurements of proton–omega baryon correlations, the effect of the strong interaction for this hadron–hadron pair can be studied with precision similar to, and compared with, predictions from lattice calculations13,14. The large number of hyperons identified in proton–proton collisions at the LHC, together with accurate modelling15 of the small (approximately one femtometre) inter-particle distance and exact predictions for the correlation functions, enables a detailed determination of the short-range part of the nucleon-hyperon interaction., Correlations in momentum space between hadrons created by ultrarelativistic proton–proton collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider provide insights into the strong interaction, particularly the short-range dynamics of hyperons—baryons that contain strange quarks.

The Λ(1405) production in p + p collisions at 3.5 GeV and K-induced reactions is discussed. The shift of the measured spectral function of the Λ(1405) in p + p reactions does not match either theoretical calculations for p + p reactions or experimental observation in previous K-induced reactions. New experiments with stopped and in-flight K are needed to study this initial state more in detail. The state of the art of the analysis is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent developments and pending issues in low-energy strong interaction physics with strangeness are summarized. Chiral SU(3) effective field theory has progressed as the appropriate theoretical framework applied to antikaon- and hyperon-nuclear systems. Topics include antikaon-nucleon interactions and the Λ(1405), $\bar {K}NN$ systems, recent developments in hyperon-nucleon interactions and strangeness in dense baryonic matter with emphasis on new constraints from neutron star observations. 8. Investigating the microscopic properties of strongly interacting matter with HADES.

- Abstract
In the energy domain of 1-2 GeV kinetic energy per nucleon, HADES has measured rare and penetrating probes in elementary and heavy ion collisions. Our results demonstrate that electron pair emission in C+C collisions can essentially be explained as a superposition of independent N+N collisions. HADES results on ee production in Ar+KCl collisions, however, show a strong enhancement of the dilepton yield relative to a reference spectrum obtained from elementary nucleon-nucleon reactions, signal the onset of medium effects beyond the superposition of individual N+N collisions. Intriguing results where also obtained from the reconstruction of hadrons with open and hidden strangeness. Analyses of the experimentally obtained hadronic yields measured in Ar+KCl allows to extract the chemical freeze-out conditions in the T -µB phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. While the measured abundance of all reconstructed particles are well described assuming thermalization, the also reconstructed double strange baryon ≡ appears about ten times more abundant than expected. This result will be discussed in the context of the exploration of the nuclear matter phase diagram in the region of finite density. Further investigations to search for significant medium effects, will be followed over the coming years with an upgraded HADES detector. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the status of the evaluation of in-medium production cross sections for Lambda baryons and K $_{0}^{S}$ mesons in pion induced reactions at 1.15 GeV/c beam momentum. A systematics of five target nuclei, from carbon to lead, has been measured. The inclusive in-medium cross section is studied as well as possible conclusions on in-medium potential by comparing to transport model calculations. The data have been recorded by the FOPI detector at the GSI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the present analysis is to determine the relative production cross sections of the Λ(1405) and Σ(1385) resonances in p+p collisions at E = 3.5 GeV measured with HADES. Upper and lower limits have been determined for the ratio $\sigma_{(\Sigma(1385)^{0}+p+K^{+})}/\sigma_{(\Lambda(1405)+p+K^{+})}=0.76_{-0.26}^{+0.54}$. The knowledge of this ratio is an essential input for the analysis of the decay Λ(1405)→Σ π, where an unambiguous separation of the Λ(1405) and Σ(1385) signals is not possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hypernuclear research will be one of the main topics addressed by the $\overline{\mbox{P}}$ anda experiment at the planned Facility for Anti-proton and Ion Research FAIR at Darmstadt, Germany. A copious production of Ξ-hyperons at a dedicated internal target in the stored anti-proton beam is expected, which will enable the high-precision γ-spectroscopy of double strange systems for the first time. In addition to the general purpose $\overline{\mbox{P}}$ anda setup, the hypernuclear experiments require an active secondary target of silicon layers and absorber material as well as high purity germanium (HPGe) crystals as γ-detectors. The design of the setup and the development of these detectors is progressing: a first HPGe crystal with a new electromechanical cooling system was prepared and the properties of a silicon strip detector as a prototype to be used in the secondary target were studied. Simultaneously to the hardware projects, detailed Monte Carlo simulations were performed to predict the yield of particle stable hypernuclei. With the help of the Monte Carlo a procedure for ΛΛ-hypernuclei identification by the detection and correlation of the weak decay pions was developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have studied the strangeness contribution to the elastic vector and axial form factors of the nucleon, using all available electroweak elastic scattering data sensitive to these contributions. Specifically, we combine νp and $\bar{\nu} p$ elastic scattering cross sections from Brookhaven E734 with parity-violating asymmetries in elastic ep scattering, and quasi-elastic ed and e He scattering, observed in the SAMPLE, HAPPEx, G0 and PVA4 experiments. We are able not only to determine these form factors at individual values of momentum-transfer ( Q), as has been done recently, but also to fit the Q-dependence of these form factors using simple functional forms. We present the results of these fits using existing data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have measured parity-violating asymmetries in elastic electron-proton and quasi-elastic electron-deuteron scattering at Q = 0.22 and 0.63 GeV. They are sensitive to strange quark contributions to currents in the nucleon, and to the nucleon axial current. The results indicate strange quark contributions of ≤10% of the charge and magnetic nucleon form factors at these four-momentum transfers. Analysis of the data is summarized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Strangeness nuclear physics is one of the main fields to be explored at the J-PARC Hadron Hall. The K − and π± beams at the K1.8 beam line will be used mostly for hypernuclear experiments. The γ-spectroscopy of Λ hypernuclei using the K −, π − reaction and the spectroscopy of neutron-rich hypernuclei via the π −, K + reaction are planned to be studied. As for Strangeness = − 2 systems, experiments for Ξ hypernuclear spectroscopy via the K −, K + reaction, double Λ hypernuclei by the hybrid emulsion method, and Ξ−-atomic X rays will be carried out. Philosophical trends such as the philosophy of religion, especially Thomism, existentialism, and phenomenology emerged in Lithuanian philosophy during the 20th century. The article discusses the chief preconditions of the spread of existentialism, in particular the dominant Christian existentialism, in Lithuania and its influence on Lithuanian culture. The best known representatives of this philosophical trend were J. Girnius and A. Maceina. There are two periods of existentialism and its development in Lithuania: the first one includes the independence years and the second covers the time of the Soviet occupation. The author discusses its influence on Lithuanian literature and introduces the main problems of existential philosophy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Angular correlations between produced high- p
T Ξ− baryons and unidentified charged and neutral particles are observed in high-tower triggered (on a large electromagnetic energy deposit) √ s=200 GeV p+p collisions. This trigger favors events with higher average multiplicity than those in minimum bias. These events are likely to contain jets. The average multiplicity of a high-tower triggered event is similar to that of a minimum bias event containing a Ξ baryon, which implies that Ξ baryons are likely to be produced in jets. Ξ− < pT > is higher in the triggered data then in the minimum bias sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
New NA49 data from hadron+proton and hadron+Pb interactions are used to extract detailed information on projectile isospin effects and baryon, baryon pair and strangeness production. Consequences for the interpretation of hadron production and strangeness enhancement in nuclear collisions are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article elucidates and elaborates upon the contextualized meaning of strangeness and the experience of being a stranger. Our empirical study of strangeness embarks simultaneously from the three leading theories of the stranger—as cultural reader (Schuetz 1944), as demarcator of social boundaries (Simmel 1950), and as trespasser of social categories (Bauman 1990, 1991)—and at the same time criticizes these theories for artificially divesting strangeness of social context. Our thesis about strangeness-in-context is grounded in in-depth interviews we conducted with Jewish–Russian immigrants (twenty-one university students) who have lived in kibbutzim. Our assumption is that the kibbutz as a “communal home” is a suitable case study to illuminate the manyfold dimensions of strangeness, as it intensifies the tension between insiders and outsiders. In explicating the immigrant's sense of strangeness we claim the local context of the kibbutz interacts with the Israeli national definition of the immigrant as a homecomer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Compelling evidence for the creation of a new form of matter has been claimed to be found in Pb+Pb collisions at SPS. We discuss the uniqueness of often proposed experimental signatures for quark matter formation in relativistic heavy ion collisions. It is demonstrated that so far none of the proposed signals like J/ϕ meson production/suppression, strangeness enhancement, dileptons, and directed flow unambiguously show that a phase of deconfined matter has been formed in SPS Pb+Pb collisions. We emphasize the need for systematic future measurements to search for simultaneous irregularities in the excitation functions of several observables in order to come close to pinning the properties of hot, dense QCD matter from data. - Abstract
Experimental data on the production of kaons and antikaons in heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies are presented and discussed with respect to in-medium effects. The K
− /K+ ratios measured in nucleus-nucleus collisions are 1–2 orders of magnitude larger than in proton-proton collisions. The azimuthal angle distributions of K+ mesons indicate a repulsive kaon-nucleon potential. Microscopic transport calculations consistently explain both the yields and the emission patterns of kaons and antikaons when assuming that their properties are modified in dense nuclear matter. The K+ production excitation functions measured in light and heavy collision systems provide evidence for a soft nuclear equation-of-state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The production of prompt D$_s^+$ mesons was measured for the first time in collisions of heavy nuclei with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The analysis was performed on a data sample of Pb-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair, $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$, of 2.76 TeV in two different centrality classes, namely 0-10% and 20-50%. D$_s^+$ mesons and their antiparticles were reconstructed at mid-rapidity from their hadronic decay channel D$_s^+\rightarrow\phi\pi^+$, with $\phi\rightarrow$K$^-$K$^+$, in the transverse momentum intervals $4< p_{\rm T}

We study the nucleon matrix elements of the quark scalar-density operator using maximally twisted mass fermions with dynamical light (u,d), strange and charm degrees of freedom. We demonstrate that in this setup the nucleon matrix elements of the light and strange quark densities can be obtained with good statistical accuracy, while for the charm quark counterpart only a bound can be provided. The present calculation which is performed at only one value of the lattice spacing and pion mass serves as a technical feasibility study for a future computation of the scalar quark content of the nucleon with a detailed analysis of the systematics.

In this article, we construct both the axialvector-diquark–axialvector-diquark–antiquark type and the axialvector-diquark–scalar-diquark–antiquark type interpolating currents, then calculate the contributions of the vacuum condensates up to dimension 10 in the operator product expansion, and we study the masses and pole residues of the $$J^P={\frac{1}{2}}^\pm $$ hidden-charm pentaquark states with the QCD sum rules in a systematic way. In calculations, we use the formula $$\mu =\sqrt{M^2_{P}-(2{\mathbb {M}}_c)^2}$$ to determine the energy scales of the QCD spectral densities. We take into account the $$\mathrm{SU}(3)$$ breaking effects of the light quarks, and we obtain the masses of the hidden-charm pentaquark states with the strangeness $$S=0,-1,-2,-3$$ , which can be confronted with the experimental data in the future.

We report on the possible interpretation of the two proposed dark matter mass values mχ = 11.6 GeV and mχ = 25.3 GeV from CRESST-II within the framework of the Higgs portal minimal dark matter model. We find that the higher mass value yields a suitable fit with a dark matter- Higgs coupling η/2 = 0.157 and a recoil cross section which is compatible with contemporary estimates of the effective Higgs-nucleon coupling. On the other hand, the lower mass solution would require a large strangeness component in the nucleon to explain the corresponding nucleon recoil cross section reported by CRESST-II.
