Bimetallic complexes of the type cis, cis-M(CO)4(μ-dppe)2M1(CO)4 (where M & M1 are Cr, Mo or W, dppe is l,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane)have relatively independent electroactive centres in close enough proximity for coulombic forces to determine in part the interactions occuring. In electrolyte solutions using solvent mixtures the bulk dielectric constants appear to determine the interaction only when large (> 16–17). Below this threshold the onset of ion-pairing is suggested to radically alter the dielectric properties involved. This has implications in the use of low dielectric solvents in any comparative study.
