This chapter describes certain steps in the synthesis and degradation of dopamine and how alterations in them may lead to changes in neuro- transmission and behaviour. The ideas discussed here reflect the collective efforts of many of my colleagues at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, who have contributed significantly to an integrated programme of biochemical, pharmacological, psychiatric, and behavioural studies of schizophrenic patients, paralleled by correlative studies in animal models. My discussion will include well established principles in the process of neurotransmission, and some innovative hypotheses which are currently being tested.
