In order to investigate the nature and characteristics of the motions of very faint objects, a flexibly-pointed instrument capable of high astrometric accuracy is an ideal complement to current astrometric surveys and a unique tool for precision astrophysics. Such a space-based mission will push the frontier of precision astrometry from evidence of Earth-mass habitable worlds around the nearest stars, to distant Milky Way objects, and out to the Local Group of galaxies. As we enter the era of the JamesWebb Space Telescope and the new ground-based, adaptive-optics-enabled giant telescopes, by obtaining these high precision measurements on key objects that Gaia could not reach, a mission that focuses on high precision astrometry science can consolidate our theoretical understanding of the local Universe, enable extrapolation of physical processes to remote redshifts, and derive a much more consistent picture of cosmological evolution and the likely fate of our cosmos. Already several missions have been proposed to address the science case of faint objects in motion using high precision astrometry missions: NEAT proposed for the ESA M3 opportunity, micro-NEAT for the S1 opportunity, and Theia for the M4 and M5 opportunities. Additional new mission configurations adapted with technological innovations could be envisioned to pursue accurate measurements of these extremely small motions. The reverberation associated with the iron line is the time lag between direct photons from the corona and the photons reflected from the disk. The resulting line spectrum is called the 2D transfer function. The shape of the 2D transfer function is determined by the geometry of spacetime and the properties of BH. In a paper (Ghasemi-Nodehi and Bambi in EPJC 76:290, 2016), the authors have proposed a parametrization. This parametrization is aimed to test the Kerr nature of astrophysical black hole candidates. In this paper, I provide a reverberation mapping of the Ghasemi-Nodehi-Bambi metric in order to constrain the parameter of spacetime. All parameters can be constrained with the exception of b11. This paper presents a parameter estimation analysis of the seven binary black hole mergers---GW170104, GW170608, GW170729, GW170809, GW170814, GW170818, and GW170823---detected during the second observing run of the Advanced LIGO and Virgo observatories using the gravitational-wave open data. We describe the methodology for parameter estimation of compact binaries using gravitational-wave data, and we present the posterior distributions of the inferred astrophysical parameters. The advent of experimental science facilities-instruments and observatories, such as the Large Hadron Collider, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory, and the upcoming Large Synoptic Survey Telescope-has brought about challenging, large-scale computational and data processing requirements. Traditionally, the computing infrastructure to support these facility's requirements were organized into separate infrastructure that supported their high-throughput needs and those that supported their high-performance computing needs. We argue that to enable and accelerate scientific discovery at the scale and sophistication that is now needed, this separation between high-performance computing and high-throughput computing must be bridged and an integrated, unified infrastructure provided. In this paper, we discuss several case studies where such infrastructure has been implemented. These case studies span different science domains, software systems, and application requirements as well as levels of sustainability. A further aim of this paper is to provide a basis to determine the common characteristics and requirements of such infrastructure, as well as to begin a discussion of how best to support the computing requirements of existing and future experimental science facilities., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a prime target for studying black hole accretion and jet formation^{1,2}. Event Horizon Telescope observations of M87 in 2017, at a wavelength of 1.3 mm, revealed a ring-like structure, which was interpreted as gravitationally lensed emission around a central black hole^3. Here we report images of M87 obtained in 2018, at a wavelength of 3.5 mm, showing that the compact radio core is spatially resolved. High-resolution imaging shows a ring-like structure of 8.4_{-1.1}^{+0.5} Schwarzschild radii in diameter, approximately 50% larger than that seen at 1.3 mm. The outer edge at 3.5 mm is also larger than that at 1.3 mm. This larger and thicker ring indicates a substantial contribution from the accretion flow with absorption effects in addition to the gravitationally lensed ring-like emission. The images show that the edge-brightened jet connects to the accretion flow of the black hole. Close to the black hole, the emission profile of the jet-launching region is wider than the expected profile of a black-hole-driven jet, suggesting the possible presence of a wind associated with the accretion flow., 50 pages, 18 figures, 3 tables, author's version of the paper published in Nature

The Microchannel X-ray Telescope (MXT) will be the first focusing X-ray telescope based on a "Lobster-Eye" optical design to be flown on Sino-French mission SVOM. SVOM will be dedicated to the study of Gamma-Ray Bursts and more generally time-domain astrophysics. The MXT telescope is a compact (focal length ~ 1.15 m) and light (< 42 kg) instrument, sensitive in the 0.2--10 keV energy range. It is composed of an optical system, based on micro-pore optics (MPOs) of 40 micron pore size, coupled to a low-noise pnCDD X-ray detector. Bolometric luminosity is a basic physical parameter that is widely used in the study of blazars. Due to the lack of simultaneous full wavelength data, several estimators of the bolometric luminosity are being used in practice. In this paper, we study and evaluate the reliability and significance of six estimators, the $5GHz$ luminosity, the 1keV luminosity, the $\gamma$-ray luminosity, the $5GHz$ luminosity+the 1keV luminosity, the $5GHz$ luminosity+the $\gamma$-ray luminosity and the 1keV luminosity+the $\gamma$-ray luminosity, by analyzing the linear correlations between the integrated bolometric luminosity and them. Our main results are as follows. (i) All the six estimators are reliable in the sense that they are all significant correlated with the bolometric luminosity. (ii) Ranking from the higher significance of the reliability to lower one the six estimators are the the $5GHz$ luminosity+the $\gamma$-ray luminosity, the 1keV luminosity+the $\gamma$-ray luminosity, $\gamma$-ray luminosity, the $5GHz$ luminosity+the 1keV luminosity, the $5GHz$ luminosity and the 1keV luminosity. (iii) We suggest that the bolometric luminosity can be well estimated by the $\gamma$-ray luminosity using the best linear equation that given in this paper for Fermi FSRQs. The Fermi Bubbles are giant, gamma-ray emitting lobes emanating from the nucleus of the Milky Way discovered in ~1-100 GeV data collected by the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. Previous work has revealed substructure within the Fermi Bubbles that has been interpreted as a signature of collimated outflows from the Galaxy's super-massive black hole. Here we show via a spatial template analysis that much of the gamma-ray emission associated to the brightest region of substructure -- the so-called cocoon -- is likely due to the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (Sgr dSph) galaxy. This large Milky Way satellite is viewed through the Fermi Bubbles from the position of the Solar System. As a tidally and ram-pressure stripped remnant, the Sgr dSph has no on-going star formation, but we nevertheless demonstrate that the dwarf's millisecond pulsar (MSP) population can plausibly supply the gamma-ray signal that our analysis associates to its stellar template. The measured spectrum is naturally explained by inverse Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons by high-energy electron-positron pairs injected by MSPs belonging to the Sgr dSph, combined with these objects' magnetospheric emission. This finding plausibly suggests that MSPs produce significant gamma-ray emission amongst old stellar populations, potentially confounding indirect dark matter searches in regions such as the Galactic Centre, the Andromeda galaxy, and other massive Milky Way dwarf spheroidals., Comment: Updated to match version accepted for publication in Nature Astronomy (2022). 14 pages main text, 3 main figures, 7 extended data figures. The Positron Puzzle is a half-century old conundrum about the origin of the Galactic $\gamma$-ray emission line at photon energies of 511 keV, and the shape of its morphology, showing a bulge-to-disk luminosity ratio of $\sim 1$ - unlike any astrophysical source distribution. Positrons that have been cooled to the eV scale capture electrons and form the intermediate bound state of Positronium (Ps) which decays on a nano-second timescale into two or three photons. Assuming the emission to originate from the Galactic bulge, centre, and disk, a visible annihilation rate in the Milky Way of $\sim 5 \times 10^{43}\,\mathrm{e^+\,s^{-1}}$ has to be explained, either by a quasi-steady state of production and annihilation, or by possibly multiple burst-like events that flood the Galaxy with positrons, then fading away on a Myr timescale. The study of neutrino pair annihilation into electron-positron pairs ($\nu{\bar \nu}\to e^-e^+$) is astrophysically well-motivated because it is a possible powering mechanism for the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In this paper, we estimate the gamma-ray energy deposition rate (EDR) arising from the annihilation of the neutrino pairs in the equatorial plane of a slowly rotating black hole geometry modified by the broken Lorentz symmetry (induced by a background bumblebee vector field). More specifically, owing to the presence of a dimensionless Lorentz symmetry breaking (LSB) parameter $l$ arising from nonminimal coupling between the bumblebee field with nonzero vacuum expectation value and gravity, the metric solution in question differs from the standard slowly rotating Kerr black hole. By idealizing the thin accretion disk temperature profile in the two forms of isothermal and gradient around the bumblebee gravity-based slow rotating black hole, we investigate the influence of spontaneous LSB on the $\nu{\bar \nu}$-annihilation efficiency. For both profiles, we find that positive values of LSB parameter $l>0$ induce an enhancement of the EDR associated with the neutrino-antineutrino annihilation. Therefore, the process of powering the GRBs jets around bumblebee gravity modified slowly rotating geometry is more efficient in comparison with standard metric. Using the observed gamma-ray luminosity associated with different GRBs types (short, long, and ultra-long), we find, through the analysis of the EDR in the parameter space $l-a$ ($a^2\ll1$), some allowed ranges for the LSB parameter $l$., Comment: 12 pages (two columns), 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in EPJC

The Standard Model predicts a long-range force, proportional to $G_F^2/r^5$, between fermions due to the exchange of a pair of neutrinos. This quantum force is feeble and has not been observed yet. In this paper, we compute this force in the presence of neutrino backgrounds, both for isotropic and directional background neutrinos. We find that for the case of directional background the force can have a $1/r$ dependence and it can be significantly enhanced compared to the vacuum case. In particular, background effects caused by reactor, solar, and supernova neutrinos enhance the force by many orders of magnitude. The enhancement, however, occurs only in the direction parallel to the direction of the background neutrinos. We discuss the experimental prospects of detecting the neutrino force in neutrino backgrounds and find that the effect is close to the available sensitivity of the current fifth force experiments. Yet, the angular spread of the neutrino flux and that of the test masses reduce the strength of this force. Neutron stars and black holes are the most compact astrophysical objects we can think of and as a consequence they are the main sources of gravitational waves. There are many astrophysically relevant scenarios in which these objects are immersed in or endowed with strong magnetic fields, in such a way that gravitational perturbations can couple to electromagnetic ones and can potentially trigger synergistic electromagnetic signatures. In a recent paper we derived the main equations for gravito-electromagnetic perturbations and studied in detail the case of polar electromagnetic perturbations driven by axial gravitational perturbations. In this paper we deal with the case of axial electromagnetic perturbations driven by polar black-hole or neutron stars oscillations, in which the energy emitted in case is considerably larger than in the previous case. In the case of neutron stars the phenomenon lasts considerably longer since the fluid acts as an energy reservoir that shakes the magnetic field for a timescale of the order of secs., Comment: accepted for publication in GRG

Soft protons are a potential threat for X-ray missions using grazing incidence optics, as once focused onto the detectors they can contribute to increase the background and possibly induce radiation damage as well. The assessment of these undesired effects is especially relevant for the future ESA X-ray mission Athena, due to its large collecting area. To prevent degradation of the instrumental performance, which ultimately could compromise some of the scientific goals of the mission, the adoption of ad-hoc magnetic diverters is envisaged. Dedicated laboratory measurements are fundamental to understand the mechanisms of proton forward scattering, validate the application of the existing physical models to the Athena case and support the design of the diverters. In this paper we report on scattering efficiency measurements of soft protons impinging at grazing incidence onto a Silicon Pore Optics sample, conducted in the framework of the EXACRAD project. Measurements were taken at two different energies, ~470 keV and ~170 keV, and at four different scattering angles between 0.6 deg and 1.2 deg. The results are generally consistent with previous measurements conducted on eROSITA mirror samples, and as expected the peak of the scattering efficiency is found around the angle of specular reflection., 16 pages, 11 figures; accepted for publication on Experimental Astronomy

In this paper, we present some relativistic mean-field inner crust equations of state that have recently been uploaded in the CompOSE online repository. These equations of state fulfill experimental and microscopic constraints, and are also able to reproduce two solar-mass stars. In this paper we study the possibility of having a wormhole (WH) as a candidate for the Sgr A$^\star$ central object and test this idea by constraining their geometry using the motion of S2 star and the reconstructed shadow images. In particular, we consider three WH models, including WHs in Einstein theory, brane-world gravity, and Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell theory. To this end, we have constrained the WH throat using the motion of S2 star and shown that the flare out condition is satisfied. We also consider the accretion of infalling gas model and study the accretion rate and the intensity of the electromagnetic radiation as well as the shadow images., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. v2: refereed version

Optical follow-up observations of optical afterglows of gamma-ray bursts are crucial to probe the geometry of outflows, emission mechanisms, energetics and burst environments. We performed the follow-up observations of GRB 210205A and ZTF21aaeyldq (AT2021any) using the 3.6m Devasthal optical telescope (DOT) around one day after the burst to deeper limits due to the longitudinal advantage of the place. This paper presents our analysis of the two objects using data from other collaborative facilities, i.e., 2.2m Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory (CAHA) and other archival data. Our analysis suggests that GRB 210205A is a potential dark burst once compared with the X-ray afterglow data. Also, comparing results with other known and well-studied dark GRBs samples indicate that the reason for the optical darkness of GRB 210205A could either be intrinsic faintness or a high redshift event. Based on our analysis, we also found that ZTF21aaeyldq is the third known orphan afterglow with a measured redshift except for ZTF20aajnksq (AT2020blt) and ZTF19abvizsw (AT2019pim). The multiwavelength afterglow modeling of ZTF21aaeyldq using the afterglowpy package demands a forward shock model for an ISM-like ambient medium with a rather wider jet opening angle. We determine circumburst density of n0=0.87 cm−3, kinetic energy Ek=3.80×1052 erg and the afterglow modeling also indicates that ZTF21aaeyldq is observed on-axis (θobs, RG, SBP, and KM acknowledge BRICS grant DST/IMRCD/BRICS/PilotCall1/ProFCheap/2017(G) for the financial support. In this work, we study the synthetic explosions of a massive star. We take a 100 M$_{\odot}$ zero--age main--sequence (ZAMS) star and evolve it until the onset of core-collapse using {\tt MESA}. Then, the resulting star model is exploded using the publicly available stellar explosion code, {\tt STELLA}. The outputs of {\tt STELLA} calculations provide us the bolometric light curve and photospheric velocity evolution along with other physical properties of the underlying supernova. In this paper, the effects of having large Hydrogen-envelope on the supernova light curve have been explored. We derive the equations of motion for an $N$-body system in the Einstein-Cartan gravity theory at the first post-Newtonian order by exploiting the Weyssenhoff fluid as the spin model. Our approach consists in performing the point-particle limit of the continuous description of the gravitational source. The final equations provide a hint for the validity of the effacing principle at 1PN level in Einstein-Cartan model. The core-envelope analytic models of Negi et al. (1989) have been found to be consistent with both the mechanisms of glitch generation in pulsars, namely - (i) the starquake model and (ii) the vortex unpinning model. In Negi (2019), the author has been able to reproduce the observed values of glitch healing parameter, $ G_h (= I_{\rm core}/I_{\rm total}; G_h$ represents the fractional moment of inertia of the core component in the starquake mechanism of glitch generation) for the Crab as well as for the Vela pulsar. In another study, by using the models discussed in Negi et al. (1989), the author has obtained the minimum value of fractional moment of inertia of the crust about 7.4\% and larger for all the values of masses in the range - $1M_\odot - 1.96M_\odot$ considered for the Vela pulsar (Negi 2020a). The latter study of the author is found to be consistent with the recent requirement (on the basis of vortex unpinning model of the glitch generation) which refers: The minimum fractional crustal moment of inertia of the Vela pulsar should be about 7\% for a mass higher than about 1$M_\odot$. However, an important study which requires investigation of pulsational stability and gravitational binding of the models of Negi et al. (1989) has not been carried out so far. The present paper deals with such a study of the models (Negi et al. 1989) for all permissible values of the compactness parameter $u (\equiv M/a$, total mass to size ratio in geometrized units) and compressibility factor $Q$ (defined in Tolman's VII solution as: $ x = r^2/K^2 = r^2/a^2Q)$. Magnetars are young, highly magnetized neutron stars that produce extremely rare giant flares of gamma-rays, the most luminous astrophysical phenomena in our Galaxy. The detection of these flares from outside the Local Group of galaxies has been predicted, with just two candidates so far. Here we report on the extremely bright gamma-ray flare GRB 200415A of April 15, 2020, which we localize, using the Interplanetary Network, to a tiny (20 sq. arcmin) area on the celestial sphere, that overlaps the central region of the Sculptor galaxy at 3.5 Mpc from the Milky Way. From the Konus-Wind detections, we find a striking similarity between GRB 200415A and GRB 051103, the even more energetic flare that presumably originated from the M81/M82 group of galaxies at nearly the same distance (3.6 Mpc). Both bursts display a sharp, millisecond-scale, hard-spectrum initial pulse, followed by an approximately 0.2 s long steadily fading and softening tail. Apart from the huge initial pulses of magnetar giant flares, no astrophysical signal with this combination of temporal and spectral properties and implied energy has been reported previously. At the inferred distances, the energy released in both flares is on par with that of the December 27, 2004 superflare from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1806-20, but with a higher peak luminosity. Taken all together, this makes GRB 200415A and its twin GRB 051103 the most significant candidates for extragalactic magnetar giant flares, both a factor of five more luminous than the brightest Galactic magnetar flare observed previously, thus providing an important step towards a better understanding of this fascinating phenomenon., Preprint version of Nature paper

The aim of this paper is to study the variability of the warm absorber "clouds of ionised gas within AGN", for the Seyfert 1 galaxies Arakelian 564. The X-ray spectra for four XMM-Newton observations of this object are analysed in EPIC and RGS instruments. These four observations covered a period of eleven years. There are some changes in the ionisation parameter ($ \xi $) of the absorbing matter from one observation to another( $\log\xi =0.889 \pm 3.11 \times 10^{-2}$ for year 2000 observation and $0.437 \pm 7.60 \times 10^{-2}$ for year 2001 ). Also the X-ray soft excess is studied for the four observation by using two blackbody parameters in EPIC spectra ( the first black-body temperature is $\sim $ $0.129 \pm 2.04 \times 10^{-3}$ Kev and the second is $\sim 1.74 \pm 7.6 \times {10^{-2}}$ Kev) and one black body parameter in RGS spectra.

Neutron star due to their high interior matter density are expected to be composed of a quark core, a mixed quark-hadron matter, and a layer of hadronic matter. Thus, in this paper, we compute the equation of state of these parts of neutron star to evaluate its structure properties. We use two models for describing EOS of quark matter, NJL and MIT bag models, and employ three approaches in this work. A density dependent bag constant satisfy the quark confinement in the simple MIT bag model. We also study the interaction behavior of quarks, firstly one gluon exchange within MIT bag model and the secondly dynamical mass will be held as effective interaction that roles between particles. Density dependence of quark mass is obtained from NJL self consistent model. NJL model is a effective manner for justify the chiral symmetry. Applying the Gibbs conditions the equation of state of the quarks and hadrons mixed phase is obtained. Since the hadronic matter is under the influence of strong force of nucleons, we calculate the equation of state of this phase using a powerful variational many-body technique. Finally, we calculate the mass and radius of a cold neutron star with a quark core by numerically solving the TOV equation. To check our used EOS, we compare our results with the recent observational data. In this paper, we investigated the thermodynamic properties of strange quark matter using Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model at finite temperatures where we considered the dynamical mass as the effective interaction between quarks. By considering the pressure of strange quark matter (SQM) at finite temperatures, we showed that the equation of state of this system gets stiffer by increasing temperature. In addition, we investigated the energy conditions and stability of the equation of state and showed that the equation of state of SQM satisfy the conditions of stability. Finally, we computed the structure properties of hot strange quark stars (SQS) including the gravitational mass, radius, Schwarzschild radius, average density, compactness and gravitational redshift. Our calculations showed that in this model, the maximum mass and radius of SQS increase by increasing temperature. Furthermore it was shown that the average density of SQS is greater than the normal nuclear density, and it is an increasing function of temperature. In this paper, we analyze the so-called Master Equation of the linear backreaction of a plasma disk in the central object magnetic field, when small scale ripples are considered. This study allows to single out two relevant physical properties of the linear disk backreaction: (i) the appearance of a vertical growth of the magnetic flux perturbations; (ii) the emergence of sequence of magnetic field O-points, crucial for the triggering of local plasma instabilities. We first analyze a general Fourier approach to the solution of the addressed linear partial differential problem. This technique allows to show how the vertical gradient of the backreaction is, in general, inverted with respect to the background one. Instead, the fundamental harmonic solution constitutes a specific exception for which the background and the perturbed profiles are both decaying. Then, we study the linear partial differential system from the point of view of a general variable separation method. The obtained profile describes the crystalline behavior of the disk. Using a simple rescaling, the governing equation is reduced to the second order differential Whittaker equation. The zeros of the radial magnetic field are found by using the solution written in terms Kummer functions. The possible implications of the obtained morphology of the disk magnetic profile are then discussed in view of the jet formation., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

Since the very beginning of astronomy the location of objects on the sky has been a fundamental observational quantity that has been taken for granted. While precise two dimensional positional information is easy to obtain for observations in the electromagnetic spectrum, the positional accuracy of current and near future gravitational wave detectors is limited to between tens and hundreds of square degrees, which makes it extremely challenging to identify the host galaxies of gravitational wave events or to confidently detect any electromagnetic counterparts. Gravitational wave observations provide information on source properties and distances that is complementary to the information in any associated electromagnetic emission and that is very hard to obtain in any other way. Observing systems with multiple messengers thus has scientific potential much greater than the sum of its parts. A gravitational wave detector with higher angular resolution would significantly increase the prospects for finding the hosts of gravitational wave sources and triggering a multi-messenger follow-up campaign. An observatory with arcminute precision or better could be realised within the Voyage 2050 programme by creating a large baseline interferometer array in space and would have transformative scientific potential. Precise positional information of standard sirens would enable precision measurements of cosmological parameters and offer new insights on structure formation; a high angular resolution gravitational wave observatory would allow the detection of a stochastic background and resolution of the anisotropies within it; it would also allow the study of accretion processes around black holes; and it would have tremendous potential for tests of modified gravity and the discovery of physics beyond the Standard Model., 26 pages, 2 figures. Low energy antideuteron detection presents a unique channel for indirect detection, targeting dark matter that annihilates into hadrons in a relatively background-free way. Since the idea was first proposed, many WIMP-type models have already been disfavored by direct detection experiments, and current constraints indicate that any thermal relic candidates likely annihilate through some hidden sector process. In this paper, we show that cosmic ray antideuteron detection experiments represent one of the best ways to search for hidden sector thermal relic dark matter, and in particular investigate a vector portal dark matter that annihilates via a massive dark photon. We find that the parameter space with thermal relic annihilation and $m_\chi > m_{A'} \gtrsim 20 \, \mathrm{GeV}$ is largely unconstrained, and near future antideuteron experiment \GAPS will be able to probe models in this space with $m_\chi \approx m_{A'}$ up to masses of $O(100\,\mathrm{GeV})$. Specifically the dark matter models favored by the \textit{Fermi} Galactic center excess is expected to be detected or constrained at the $5(3)-\sigma$ level assuming a optimistic (conservative) propagation model., Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures. SS 433 is a binary system containing a supergiant star that is overflowing its Roche lobe with matter accreting onto a compact object (either a black hole or neutron star). Two jets of ionized matter with a bulk velocity of $\sim0.26c$ extend from the binary, perpendicular to the line of sight, and terminate inside W50, a supernova remnant that is being distorted by the jets. SS 433 differs from other microquasars in that the accretion is believed to be super-Eddington, and the luminosity of the system is $\sim10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The lobes of W50 in which the jets terminate, about 40 pc from the central source, are expected to accelerate charged particles, and indeed radio and X-ray emission consistent with electron synchrotron emission in a magnetic field have been observed. At higher energies (>100 GeV), the particle fluxes of $\gamma$ rays from X-ray hotspots around SS 433 have been reported as flux upper limits. In this energy regime, it has been unclear whether the emission is dominated by electrons that are interacting with photons from the cosmic microwave background through inverse-Compton scattering or by protons interacting with the ambient gas. Here we report TeV $\gamma$-ray observations of the SS 433/W50 system where the lobes are spatially resolved. The TeV emission is localized to structures in the lobes, far from the center of the system where the jets are formed. We have measured photon energies of at least 25 TeV, and these are certainly not Doppler boosted, because of the viewing geometry. We conclude that the emission from radio to TeV energies is consistent with a single population of electrons with energies extending to at least hundreds of TeV in a magnetic field of $\sim16$~micro-Gauss., Comment: Preprint version of Nature paper. NuRadioMC is a Monte Carlo framework designed to simulate ultra-high energy neutrino detectors that rely on the radio detection method. This method exploits the radio emission generated in the electromagnetic component of a particle shower following a neutrino interaction. NuRadioMC simulates everything from the neutrino interaction in a medium, the subsequent Askaryan radio emission, the propagation of the radio signal to the detector and finally the detector response. NuRadioMC is designed as a modern, modular Python-based framework, combining flexibility in detector design with user-friendliness. It includes a state-of-the-art event generator, an improved modelling of the radio emission, a revisited approach to signal propagation and increased flexibility and precision in the detector simulation. This paper focuses on the implemented physics processes and their implications for detector design. A variety of models and parameterizations for the radio emission of neutrino-induced showers are compared and reviewed. With the largest dish Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), both the mean and single pulses of PSR B2016$+$28, especially including the single-pulse structure, are investigated in detail in this study. The mean pulse profiles at different frequencies can be well fitted in a conal model, and the peak separation of intensity-dependent pulse profiles increases with intensity. The integrated pulses are obviously frequency dependent (pulse width decreases by $\sim\,20\%$ as frequency increases from 300 MHz to 750 MHz), but the structure of single pulses changes slightly (the corresponding correlation scale decreases by only $\sim\,1\%$). This disparity between mean and single pulses provides independent evidence for the existence of the RS-type vacuum inner gap, indicating a strong bond between particles on the pulsar surface. Diffused drifting sub-pulses are analyzed. The results show that the modulation period along pulse series ($P_3$) is positively correlated to the separation between two adjacent sub-pulses ($P_2$). This correlation may hint a rough surface on the pulsar, eventually resulting in the irregular drift of sparks. Rotating radio transients (RRATs) are peculiar astronomical objects whose emission mechanism remains under investigation. In this paper, we present observations of three RRATs, J1538+2345, J1854+0306 and J1913+1330, observed with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Specifically, we analyze the mean pulse profiles and temporal flux density evolutions of the RRATs. Owing to the high sensitivity of FAST, the derived burst rates of the three RRATs are higher than those in previous reports. RRAT J1854+0306 exhibited a time-dynamic mean pulse profile, whereas RRAT J1913+1330 showed distinct radiation and nulling segments on its pulse intensity trains. The mean pulse profile variation with frequency is also studied for RRAT J1538+2345 and RRAT J1913+1330, and the profiles at different frequencies could be well fitted with a cone-core model and a conal-beam model, respectively., Comment: Sci. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are short and intense flashes at the cosmological distances, which are the most luminous explosions in the Universe. The high luminosities of GRBs make them detectable out to the edge of the visible universe. So, they are unique tools to probe the properties of high-redshift universe: including the cosmic expansion and dark energy, star formation rate, the reionization epoch and the metal evolution of the Universe. First, they can be used to constrain the history of cosmic acceleration and the evolution of dark energy in a redshift range hardly achievable by other cosmological probes. Second, long GRBs are believed to be formed by collapse of massive stars. So they can be used to derive the high-redshift star formation rate, which can not be probed by current observations. Moreover, the use of GRBs as cosmological tools could unveil the reionization history and metal evolution of the Universe, the intergalactic medium (IGM) properties and the nature of first stars in the early universe. But beyond that, the GRB high-energy photons can be applied to constrain Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) and to test Einstein's Equivalence Principle (EEP). The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a satellite-borne, high-energy particle and $\gamma$-ray detector, which is dedicated to indirectly detecting particle dark matter and studying high-energy astrophysics. The first results about precise measurement of the cosmic ray electron plus positron spectrum between 25 GeV and 4.6 TeV were published recently. The DAMPE spectrum reveals an interesting spectral softening around $0.9$ TeV and a tentative peak around $1.4$ TeV. These results have inspired extensive discussion. Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes have revealed more than 100 TeV sources along the Galactic Plane, around 45% of them remain unidentified. However, radio observations revealed that dense molecular clumps are associated with 67% of 18 unidentified TeV sources. In this paper, we propose that an electron-positron magnetospheric accelerator emits detectable TeV gamma-rays when a rapidly rotating black hole enters a gaseous cloud. Since the general-relativistic effect plays an essential role in this magnetospheric lepton accelerator scenario, the emissions take place in the direct vicinity of the event horizon, resulting in a point-like gamma-ray image. We demonstrate that their gamma-ray spectra have two peaks around 0.1 GeV and 0.1 TeV and that the accelerators become most luminous when the mass accretion rate becomes about 0.01% of the Eddington accretion rate. A test fluid composed of relativistic collisionless neutral particles in the background of Kerr metric is expected to generate non-isotropic equilibrium configurations in which the corresponding stress-energy tensor exhibits pressure and temperature anisotropies. This arises as a consequence of the constraints placed on single-particle dynamics by Killing tensor symmetries, leading to a peculiar non-Maxwellian functional form of the kinetic distribution function describing the continuum system. Based on this outcome, in this paper the generation of Kerr-like metric by collisionless N-body systems of neutral matter orbiting in the field of a rotating black hole is reported. The result is obtained in the framework of covariant kinetic theory by solving the Einstein equations in terms of an analytical perturbative treatment whereby the gravitational field is decomposed as a prescribed background metric tensor described by the Kerr solution plus a self-field correction. The latter one is generated by the uncharged fluid at equilibrium and satisfies the linearized Einstein equations having the non-isotropic stress-energy tensor as source term. The observation of the inspiral and merger of compact binaries by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration ushered in a new era in the study of strong-field gravity. The discovery by the IceCube experiment of a high-energy astrophysical neutrino flux with energies of the order of PeV, has opened new scenarios in astroparticles physics. A possibility to explain this phenomenon is to consider the minimal models of Dark Matter (DM) decay, the 4-dimensional operator $\sim y_{\alpha \chi}\overline{{L_{L_{\alpha}}}}\, H\, \chi$, which is also able to generate the correct abundance of DM in the Universe. Assuming that the cosmological background evolves according to the standard cosmological model, it follows that the rate of DM decay $\Gamma_\chi \sim |y_{\alpha \chi}|^2$ needed to get the correct DM relic abundance ($\Gamma_\chi\sim 10^{-58}$) differs by many orders of magnitude with respect that one needed to explain the IceCube data ($\Gamma_\chi\sim 10^{-25}$), making the four-dimensional operator unsuitable. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) last for $\sim $ few milli-seconds and, hence, are likely to arise from the gravitational collapse of supra-massive, spinning neutron stars after they lose the centrifugal support (Falcke \& Rezzolla 2014). In this paper, we provide arguments to show that the repeating burst, FRB 121102, can also be modeled in the collapse framework provided the supra-massive object implodes either into a Kerr black hole surrounded by highly magnetized plasma or into a strange quark star. Since the estimated rates of FRBs and SN Ib/c are comparable, we put forward a common progenitor scenario for FRBs and long GRBs in which only those compact remnants entail prompt $\gamma $-emission whose kick velocities are almost aligned or anti-aligned with the stellar spin axes. In such a scenario, emission of detectable gravitational radiation and, possibly, of neutrinos are expected to occur during the SN Ib/c explosion as well as, later, at the time of magnetar implosion., Comment: To appear in the Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy. In this paper, power series solutions for strong spherical shocks of time dependent variable energy propagating in a two-phase gas-particle medium are presented taking into consideration the power series solution technique (Sakurai in J Phys Soc Jpn 8:662-669,1953; Freeman in J Phys D Appl Phys 2(1):1697-1710,1968). It has recently been demonstrated that asymptotically flat neutral reflecting stars are characterized by an intriguing no-hair property. In particular, it has been proved that these {\it horizonless} compact objects cannot support spatially regular {\it static} matter configurations made of scalar (spin-0) fields, vector (spin-1) fields, and tensor (spin-2) fields. In the present paper we shall explicitly prove that spherically symmetric compact reflecting stars can support {\it stationary} (rather than static) bound-state massive scalar fields in their exterior spacetime regions. To this end, we solve analytically the Klein-Gordon wave equation for a linearized scalar field of mass $\mu$ and proper frequency $\omega$ in the curved background of a spherically symmetric compact reflecting star of mass $M$ and radius $R_{\text{s}}$. We developed a generic formalism to estimate the event rate and the redshift distribution of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) in our previous publication (Bera et al. 2016), considering FRBs are of an extragalactic origin. In this paper we present (a) the predicted pulse widths of FRBs by considering two different scattering models, (b) the minimum total energy required to detect events, (c) the redshift distribution and (d) the detection rates of FRBs for the Ooty Wide Field Array (OWFA). The energy spectrum of FRBs is modelled as a power law with an exponent $-\alpha$ and our analysis spans a range $-3\leq \alpha \leq 5$. We find that OWFA will be capable of detecting FRBs with $\alpha\geq 0$. The redshift distribution and the event rates of FRBs are estimated by assuming two different energy distribution functions; a Delta function and a Schechter luminosity function with an exponent $-2\le \gamma \le 2$. We consider an empirical scattering model based on pulsar observations (model I) as well as a theoretical model (model II) expected for the intergalactic medium. The redshift distributions peak at a particular redshift $z_p$ for a fixed value of $\alpha$, which lie in the range $0.3\leq z_p \leq 1$ for the scattering model I and remain flat and extend up to high redshifts ($z\lesssim 5$) for the scattering model II., Comment: To appear in the Special Section of the JAA on the Ooty Wide Field Array

Studies of Compton scattering by relativistic electrons in a strong magnetic field have been restricted to either incident photon angles $\theta'$ aligned along the magnetic field $B$ or incident photon energies $\omega'$ below the first pair creation threshold $\omega'_{PC}$. When these restrictions are relaxed there is a resonance in Compton scattering associated with pair creation (PC), that is analogous to but independent of known resonances associated with gyromagnetic absorption (GA). As with the GA resonances, that may be labeled by the Landau quantum numbers of the relevant states, there is a sequence of PC resonances where the scattering cross section diverges. In this paper, the lowest divergence is studied for incident photon energies satisfying ${\omega'}^2\sin^2\theta'/(2eB)\ll1$, assuming that the scattering electron is in its ground (Landau) state. Particle acceleration occurs on a range of scales from AU in the heliosphere to Mpc in clusters of galaxies and to energies ranging from MeV to EeV. A number of acceleration processes have been proposed, but diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) is widely invoked as the predominant mechanism. DSA operates on all these scales and probably to the highest energies. DSA is simple, robust and predicts a universal spectrum. However there are still many unknowns regarding particle acceleration. This paper focuses on the particular question of whether supernova remnants (SNR) can produce the Galactic CR spectrum up to the knee at a few PeV. The microquasar GRS 1915+105, exhibits a large variety of characteristic states, according to its luminosity, spectral state, and variability. The most interesting one is the so-called rho-state, whose light curve shows recurrent bursts. This paper presents a model based on Fitzhugh-Nagumo equations containing two variables: x, linked to the source photon luminosity L detected by the MECS, and y related to the mean photon energy. We aim at providing a simple mathematical framework composed by non-linear differential equations useful to predict the observed light curve and the energy lags for the rho-state and possibly other classes of the source. We studied the equilibrium state and the stability conditions of this system that includes one external parameter, J, that can be considered a function of the disk accretion rate. Our work is based on observations performed with the MECS on board BeppoSAX when the source was in rho and nu mode, respectively. The evolution of the mean count rate and photon energy were derived from a study of the trajectories in the count rate - photon energy plane. Assuming J constant, we found a solution that reproduces the x profile of the rho class bursts and, unexpectedly, we found that y exhibited a time modulation similar to that of the mean energy. Moreover, assuming a slowly modulated J the solutions for x quite similar to those observed in the nu class light curves is reproduced. According these results, the outer mass accretion rate is probably responsible for the state transitions, but within the rho-class it is constant. This finding makes stronger the heuristic meaning of the non-linear model and suggests a simple relation between the variable x and y. However, how a system of dynamical equations can be derived from the complex mathematical apparatus of accretion disks remains to be furtherly explored.

The thermodynamics of Maxwell-Dilaton (dirty) black holes has been extensively studied. It has served as a fertile ground to test ideas about temperature through various definitions of surface gravity. In this paper, we make an independent analysis of this black hole solution in both, Einstein and Jordan, frames. We explore a set of definitions for the surface gravity and observe the different predictions they make for the near extremal configuration of this black hole. Finally, motivated by the singularity structure in the interior of the event horizon, we use a holographic argument to remove the micro-states from the disconnected region of this solution. In this manner, we construct a frame independent entropy from which we obtain a temperature which agrees with the standard results in the non-extremal regime, and has a desirable behaviour around the extremal configurations according to the third law of black hole mechanics., amendments from the previous version

The Large Observatory For X-ray Timing (LOFT), currently in an assessment phase in the framework the ESA M3 Cosmic Vision programme, is an innovative medium-class mission specifically designed to answer fundamental questions about the behaviour of matter, in the very strong gravitational and magnetic fields around compact objects and in supranuclear density conditions. Having an effective area of ~10 m^2 at 8 keV, LOFT will be able to measure with high sensitivity very fast variability in the X-ray fluxes and spectra. A good knowledge of the in-orbit background environment is essential to assess the scientific performance of the mission and optimize the design of its main instrument, the Large Area Detector (LAD). In this paper the results of an extensive Geant-4 simulation of the instrument will be discussed, showing the main contributions to the background and the design solutions for its reduction and control. Our results show that the current LOFT/LAD design is expected to meet its scientific requirement of a background rate equivalent to 10 mCrab in 2-30 keV, achieving about 5 mCrab in the most important 2-10 keV energy band. Moreover, simulations show an anticipated modulation of the background rate as small as 10% over the orbital timescale. The intrinsic photonic origin of the largest background component also allows for an efficient modelling, supported by an in-flight active monitoring, allowing to predict systematic residuals significantly better than the requirement of 1%, and actually meeting the 0.25% science goal., 31 pages, 18 figures. Analyzing simulated extensive air shower (EAS) events generated with the Monte Carlo code CORSIKA, this paper critically studies the characteristics of lateral distribution of electrons in EAS around the knee energy region of the energy spectrum of primary cosmic rays. The study takes into account the issue of lateral shower age parameter as indicator of the stage of development of showers in the atmosphere. The correlation of lateral shower age parameter with other EAS observables is examined, using simulated data in the context of its possible use in a multi-parameter study of EAS, with a view to obtaining information about the nature of the shower initiating primaries at sea level EAS experiments. It is shown that the observed slope of the lateral density function in the 3-dimensional plot at least for the KASCADE data supports the idea of a transition from light to heavy mass composition around the knee., Comment: 14 pages, 19 figures, accepted in EPJ

The next generation interferometric radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which will be the most sensitive and largest radio telescope ever constructed, could greatly contribute to the detection, survey and characterization of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). By the SKA, it will be possible to perform the follow up of GRBs even for several months. This approach would be extremely useful to extend the Spectrum Energetic Distribution (SED) from the gamma to the to radio band and would increase the number of radio detectable GRBs. In principle, the SKA could help to understand the physics of GRBs by setting constraints on theoretical models. This goal could be achieved by taking into account multiple observations at different wavelengths in order to obtain a deeper insight of the sources. Here, we present an estimation of GRB radio detections, showing that the GRBs can really be observed by the SKA. The approach that we present consists in determining blind detection rates derived by a very large sample consisting of merging several GRB catalogues observed by current missions as Swift, Fermi, Agile and INTEGRAL and by previous missions as BeppoSAX, CGRO, GRANAT, HETE-2, Ulysses and Wind. The final catalogue counts 7516 distinct sources. We compute the fraction of GRBs that could be observed by the SKA at high and low frequencies, above its observable sky. Considering the planned SKA sensitivity and through an extrapolation based on previous works and observations, we deduce the minimum fluence in the range 15-150 keV. This is the energy interval where a GRB should emit to be detectable in the radio band by the SKA. Symmetries play important roles in modern theories of physical laws. In this paper, we review several experimental tests of important symmetries associated with the gravitational interaction, including the universality of free fall for self-gravitating bodies, time-shift symmetry in the gravitational constant, local position invariance and local Lorentz invariance of gravity, and spacetime translational symmetries. Recent experimental explorations for post-Newtonian gravity are discussed, of which, those from pulsar astronomy are highlighted. All of these tests, of very different aspects of gravity theories, at very different length scales, favor to very high precision the predictions of the strong equivalence principle (SEP) and, in particular, general relativity which embodies SEP completely. This paper reports on polarimetric radiation properties based on the switching modes of normal PSR B2020+28 by analysing the data acquired from the Nanshan 25-m radio telescope at 1556 MHz. With nearly 8 hours quasi-continuous observation, the data presented some striking and updated phenomena. The change of relative intensity between the leading and trailing components is the predominant feature of mode switching. The intensity ratio between the leading and trailing components are measured for the individual profiles averaged over 30 seconds. It is found that there is an excess of high ratios over the normal distribution, which indicates that two modes exist in the pulsar. The distribution of abnormal mode has a narrower width indicating that the abnormal mode is more stable than the normal mode. A total of 76 mode switching events are detected in our data. It spends 89\% in the normal mode and 11\% in the abnormal mode. The intrinsic distributions of mode timescales are constrained with power-law distributions. The significant difference in the index of the duration distribution between normal and abnormal modes possibly indicates that the timescale for the abnormal mode to get stable is shorter than that for the normal mode. The frequent switching between both modes may indicate that the oscillations between different magnetospheric states are rapid.
