10. Effect of Moringa Leaf Extract on the Performance of Lettuce Cultivars

Abstract

Lettuce is an important crop that is grown commercially for salad purposes. To increase production of lettuce, synthetic fertilizers are applied. However, an excess of synthetic fertilizers is hazardous for the human body and also affects soil and environmental conditions. Alternative methods are available to enhance the production of lettuce, e.g., application of moringa leaf extract (MLE), which is also environmentally friendly. As MLE is a plant-based organic product, there are no side effects. The research was conducted at the Ornamental Nursery, Department of Horticulture, University of Agriculture Peshawar, during the 2020–21 season. The study was laid out in two-factor randomized complete block design in a split-plot arrangement with three replications. The two factors were MLE concentration (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8% v/v) and five lettuce cultivars (Red Laurel, Red Oakleaf, Milky White, Romaine, and Large Speed). Lettuce cultivars were sprayed with the required MLE concentrations at 2, 4, and 6 weeks after transplantation, while an extra application of MLE was given before bolting to the plants left for seed production. It was observed that lettuce cv. Red Laurel produced maximum fresh and dry head weight. Maximum plant height was recorded for cv. Red Oakleaf. Maximum leaves, head diameter, head height, root length, seed yield, and leaf area were noted in cv. Milky White. Cultivar Romaine took the maximum number of days to flowering and seed production. It also provided maximum chlorophyll content and the best taste. Moreover, MLE also had substantial effects on the growth and yield of lettuce cultivars. Here, maximum plant height, leaf area, number of leaves, head diameter, days to flowering, root length, head height, seed yield, days to seed production, chlorophyll content, and fresh and dry head weights were produced by plants sprayed with 8% (v/v) MLE. It is concluded that MLE, a useful growth promoter, has a considerable effect on the growth and development of lettuce cultivars and is thus recommended for organic production of the crop.

Abstract

Several Bayesian estimation based heuristics have been developed to perform quantum state tomography (QST). Their ability to quantify uncertainties using region estimators and include a priori knowledge of the experimentalists makes this family of methods an attractive choice for QST. However, specialized techniques for pure states do not work well for mixed states and vice versa. In this paper, we present an adaptive particle filter (PF) based QST protocol which improves the scaling of fidelity compared to nonadaptive Bayesian schemes for arbitrary multi-qubit states. This is due to the protocol's unabating perseverance to find the states's diagonal bases and more systematic handling of enduring problems in popular PF methods relating to the subjectivity of informative priors and the invalidity of particles produced by resamplers. Numerical examples and implementation on IBM quantum devices demonstrate improved performance for arbitrary quantum states and the application readiness of our proposed scheme.

Abstract

Only a single study investigated erectile dysfunction (ED) among patients with chronic brucellosis without including a control group. Our study objective was to determine the prevalence of ED among patients with chronic brucellosis compared to normal subjects, and to explore the predictors of ED. We included 93 chronic brucellosis patients and 92 subjects as a control, from June 2013 to August 2017. Chronic brucellosis was diagnosed based on persistent symptoms for ≥1 year with positive immunoglobulin G antibody titer (≥1:160) by standard tube agglutination test; the mean duration was 21 ± 6.2 months. Clinical evaluation (including an Arabic validated version of the five-item International Index of Erectile Function to diagnose ED; score of 5–21 was diagnostic), imaging studies (including scrotal ultrasonography) and laboratory investigations (including estimation of fasting serum level of glucose (after fasting for 8 h), lipids profile (after fasting for 14 h), and serum level of testosterone) were conducted. A fasting serum glucose level of ≥ 7 mmol/L defined diabetes mellitus (DM). Predictors of ED were identified using multivariate analysis (binary logistic regression). The mean age of patients was 35.4 ± 13.7 years; 24.7% of them had DM, while low serum level of testosterone was detected among 54.8%. Abstract

Distribution of entanglement for the multipartite systems is characterized through monogamy and polygamy relations. In this paper, we study the xth power monogamy properties related to the entanglement measure in bipartite states. The monogamy relations based on the nonnegative power of Tsallis-q entanglement are obtained for N-qubit states and are shown to be tighter than existing relation. We find that for any tripartite mixed state, the Tsallis-q entanglement follows a polygamy relation. This polygamy relation also holds for the multi-qubit systems. The polygamy relations of the Tsallis-q entanglement, that are uniquely defined for generalized multi-qubit W-class states, and partially coherent superposition states are also examined. Moreover, the tighter monogamy bounds for concurrence of assistance and negativity of assistance are also established for these states, which gives more accurate bounds than existing relations.

Abstract

We address the problem of unambiguous discrimination of quantum channels (UDQC) without entanglement. As our main result, we show that even in the absence of entanglement, partial UDQC (PUDQC) can still be performed—depending on the unknown given channel. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for PUDQC and put forth a method to perform the PUDQC once the said condition is met. We propose the performance metrics that capture the expected performance of the PUDQC independent of the specific channels to be distinguished. Finally, we perform PUDQC on several qubit channel pairs as concrete examples and derive the proposed performance metrics for these channel pairs.
