Achtergrond: Veel ouderen willen zo lang mogelijk zelfstandig blijven wonen. Een woonomgeving die lichaamsbeweging stimuleert kan hierbij van groot belang zijn. Hoe een ‘beweegvriendelijke’ omgeving voor oudere mensen er precies uit moet zien is nog minder duidelijk. In een onderzoek in Spijkenisse zijn kenmerken van de woonomgeving en het beweeggedrag van oudere mensen gedetailleerd gemeten. Met deze gegevens zijn verschillende onderzoeken uitgevoerd, die in dit artikel worden samengevat. Methoden: De onderzoeken werden uitgevoerd onder mensen van 65 jaar en ouder. Met behulp van vragenlijsten, versnellingsmeters, geografische informatiesystemen en GPS-apparatuur werd onderzocht hoeveel en hoever ouderen bewogen, en of er een verband was met omgevingskenmerken. Voor de vertaling naar beleid zijn de resultaten vervolgens besproken met de deelnemers en beleidsmakers. Resultaten: De deelnemers brachten het merendeel van de dag zittend door. De totale hoeveelheid lichamelijke activiteit bestond vooral uit licht intensieve vormen van bewegen, zoals wandelen en fietsen. Hoewel veel getoetste verbanden niet statistisch significant waren, bleek dat in een woonomgeving met meer voorzieningen en een betere esthetiek meer werd gewandeld voor transportdoeleinden. Conclusie: Gedetailleerde meting toonde enkele verbanden aan tussen bepaalde fysieke omgevingskenmerken en lichamelijk activiteit. Beleid dat de beweegvriendelijkheid van de woonomgeving van oudere mensen moet bevorderen, dient zich te richten op het voorzieningenniveau en de esthetiek in de woonomgeving. De evaluatie van veranderingen in deze kenmerken kan antwoord geven op de vraag in hoeverre de fysieke woonomgeving een onderdeel moet zijn van een aanpak om de groeiende groep van oudere mensen langer zelfstandig te laten wonen.

Background Living longer independently may be facilitated by an attractive and safe residential area, which stimulates physical activity. We studied the association between area characteristics and disabilities and whether this association is mediated by transport-related physical activity (TPA). Methods Longitudinal data of 271 Dutch community-dwelling adults aged 65 years and older participating in the Elderly And their Neighbourhood (ELANE) study in 2011–2013 were used. Associations between objectively measured aesthetics (range 0–22), functional features (range 0–14), safety (range 0–16), and destinations (range 0–15) within road network buffers surrounding participants’ residences, and self-reported disabilities in instrumental activities of daily living (range 0–8; measured twice over a 9 months period) were investigated by using longitudinal tobit regression analyses. Furthermore, it was investigated whether self-reported TPA mediated associations between area characteristics and disabilities. Achtergrond: Het doel van deze studie is te bestuderen of fysieke en sociale omgevingskenmerken bijdragen aan de verklaring van sociaal-economische verschillen in wandelen en sportbeoefening onder volwassenen in Nederland. Methode: Focusgroep interviews onder mensen uit lagere en hogere sociaal-economische groepen hebben richting gegeven aan de selectie van potentieel relevante omgevingskenmerken. Percepties van zulke omgevingskenmerken zijn vervolgens geoperationaliseerd in een vragenlijst, die is verstuurd naar 10.271 mensen tussen de 25 en 74 jaar (respons 64.4%). In zeven minder en zeven meer welvarende buurten in Eindhoven zijn tevens onafhankelijke observaties verricht van de fysieke omgeving. Resultaten: Het vragenlijstonderzoek bevestigde dat mensen uit lagere sociaal-economische groepen minder recreatief bewegen. Zij rapporteerden vaker dat hun woonomgeving niet aantrekkelijk en onveilig was, dat de sociale cohesie in de buurt minder goed was, en dat zij over een kleiner sociaal netwerk in de buurt beschikten. Deze factoren verklaarden een klein deel van de sociaal-economische verschillen in sporten en in wandelen. Conclusies: Een aantrekkelijke en veilige omgeving, goede sociale cohesie en een goed sociaal netwerk in de buurt lijken een kleine bijdrage te leveren aan sociaal-economische verschillen in bewegen. Beleid gericht op de verbetering van deze omgevingskenmerken kan mogelijk ook bijdragen aan de bevordering van bewegen in lagere sociaal-economische groepen.

Background Little is known about the interaction between individual and environmental determinants of physical activity, although this may be important information for the development of effective interventions. The goal of this paper is to investigate whether perceived neighborhood safety modifies associations between individual cognitions and sports participation. Methods Cross-sectional data were obtained from residents (age 25-75) of 87 neighborhoods in the city of Eindhoven, who participated in the Dutch GLOBE study in 2004 (N = 2474). We used multilevel logistic regression to analyze the interactions between perceived neighborhood safety and individual cognitions (attitude, self-efficacy, social influence, and intention) on sports participation (yes/no). Results In its association with sports participation, perceived neighborhood safety interacted significantly with self-efficacy and attitude (p < 0.05). Among persons who perceived their neighborhood as safe, a positive attitude was strongly associated with sports participation (OR = 2.00, 95%CI = 1.48-2.71). In contrast, attitude was not associated with sports participation in persons who perceived their neighborhood as unsafe (OR = 0.65, 95%CI = 0.34-1.24). Further, self-efficacy was significantly stronger associated with sports participation in persons who perceived their neighborhood as unsafe (OR = 1.85, 95%CI = 1.31-2.60) than in those who perceived their neighborhood as safe (OR = 1.19, 95%CI = 1.05-1.36). Social influence and intention did not interact with perceived neighborhood safety. Conclusions Associations between individual cognitions and sports participation depend on neighborhood circumstances, such as perceived neighborhood safety. Interventions to promote sports participation in adults should take the interaction between environmental and individual characteristics into account. More research is needed to find out the causal pathways in individual-environment interactions.

Background People with a low socioeconomic status (SES) are more likely to be physically inactive than their higher status counterparts, however, the mechanisms underlying this socioeconomic gradient in physical inactivity remain largely unknown. Our aims were (1) to investigate socioeconomic differences in recreational walking among older adults and (2) to examine to what extent neighbourhood perceptions and individual cognitions regarding regular physical activity can explain these differences. Methods Data were obtained by a large-scale postal survey among a stratified sample of older adults (age 55–75 years) (N = 1994), residing in 147 neighbourhoods of Eindhoven and surrounding areas, in the Netherlands. Multilevel logistic regression analyses assessed associations between SES (i.e. education and income), perceptions of the social and physical neighbourhood environment, measures of individual cognitions derived from the Theory of Planned Behaviour (e.g. attitude, perceived behaviour control), and recreational walking for ≥10 minutes/week (no vs. yes). Results Participants in the lowest educational group (OR 1.67 (95% CI, 1.18–2.35)) and lowest income group (OR 1.40 (95% CI, 0.98–2.01)) were more likely to report no recreational walking than their higher status counterparts. The association between SES and recreational walking attenuated when neighbourhood aesthetics was included in the model, and largely reduced when individual cognitions were added to the model (with largest effects of attitude, and intention regarding regular physical activity). The assiation between poor neighbourhood aesthetics and no recreational walking attenuated to (borderline) insignificance when individual cognitions were taken into account. Conclusion Both neighbourhood aesthetics and individual cognitions regarding physical activity contributed to the explanation of socioeconomic differences in no recreational walking. Neighbourhood aesthetics may explain the association between SES and recreational walking largely via individual cognitions towards physical activity. Intervention and policy strategies to reduce socioeconomic differences in lack of recreational walking among older adults would be most effective if they intervene on both neighbourhood perceptions as well as individual cognitions.
