Abstract

International audience; Graphons are limits of large graphs. Motivated by a theoretical problem from statistical relational learning, we develop a generalization of basic results from graphon theory into the "multi-relational" setting. We show that their multi-relational counterparts, which we call multi-relational graphons, are analogically limits of large multi-relational graphs. We extend the cutdistance topology for graphons to multi-relational graphons and prove its compactness and the density of multi-relational graphs in this topology. In turn, compactness enables to prove the large deviation principle for Multi-Relational Graphs (LDP) which enables to prove the most typical random graphs constrained by marginal statistics converge asymptotically to constrained multirelational graphons with maximum entropy. We show the equivalence between a restricted version of Markov Logic Network and Multi-Relational Graphons with maximum entropy.

Abstract

International audience; Random disturbance presents a reliability and a safety defy for quadrotor control, This research demonstrates an adaptive linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control of quadrotor, exploiting a novel faster full state observer based on an extended Kalman filter enhanced by the Madgwick method, using data fusion of multiple asynchronous sensors, subjected to track a remotely generated Spline trajectory for obstacle avoidance. The dynamics model of the quadrotor was derived using Newton Euler formalism; furthermore, its linearization was processed by the Jacobian matrix at every estimated state. The enhanced state observer is essentially based on a continuous-discrete nonlinear Kalman filter combined with the optimization of Madgwick method for quaternion orientation. The approach relies on flight dynamics predictions and gets updated by the onboard measurement of sensors at different feeding rates. A discrete linear quadratic tracker was developed for best tracking performance and robustness while avoiding collision with predefined static obstacles. Quaternion orientations and attitude and heading reference system were validated by experimental tests at less than one degree of precision error, whereas the proposed adaptive LQG control of quadrotor was simulated for tracking control and validated in Simulink environment in the presence of Gaussian random perturbations, LQG performance has been compared to the linear inner-outer looping PID, integral backstepping (IBS), and decentralized fuzzy logic control (FLC) strategies. Obtained results validated the effectiveness and robustness of the opted methodology.

Abstract

Deterministic methods used to address the coverage problem in an uncertain deployment environment have not proven to be very successful. For this purpose, the original idea of this paper is to deal with the coverage problem in an uncertain environment with uncertain theories. We consider the imperfection in the deployment environment and in the characteristics of the sensor nodes. The selection of a minimum number of nodes for a minimum number of clusters to guarantee coverage in WSN is uncertain. As a consequence, this paper proposes a hybrid FuzzyPossibilistic model to schedule the Active/ Passive state of sensor nodes. This model helps to plan the scheduling of node states (Active / Passive) based on the possibilistic information fusion to make a possibilistic decision for the node activation at each period. We evaluated the proposed model with (a) a running example, (b) a statistical evaluation (calculation of the confidence interface), and (c) a comparison with maximum sensing coverage region problem (MSCR), Coverage Maximization with Sleep Scheduling (CMSS), Spider Canvas Strategy, Semi-Random Deployment Strategy (SRDP) and PEAS with location information protocols. The simulation results highlight the benefits of using the fuzzy and possibility theories for treating the area coverage problem.

Abstract

An original fully textile combiner is proposed to power supply sensors close to a body with only one centralized source of energy like a smartphone, for instance. A solution is provided for taking into account the requirements of an industrial production process that need to minimize needle movements during an embroidery process. Moreover, the paper shows how to support several wireless power transmission standards that already exist, i.e. NFC and A4WP, or will exist to satisfy the tremendous needs of energy for distributed systems in the IoT domain. In this paper, a new textile-based flexible wireless system enabling communication and energy harvesting is proposed. Analytical, numerical, and experimental studies have been conducted to demonstrate that the structure has two resonant frequencies at 6.8 MHz and 13.6 MHz, which make it suitable for NFC and A4WP standards. Moreover, the losses caused by the system are 2.76 dB and 1.91 dB for A4WP and NFC, respectively. The results are successively presented to highlight the specificities of such textile multi-coils combiners. A method for gaining a resonant structure without any solid electronic component is explained.

Abstract

International audience; Accurate prediction of resistances at the transistor’s access zone and their temperature dependency are very important, since the current flow to the device depends on that region. In this paper, we have modeled the access resistances and have verified their temperature dependency with the experimental results in the case of a 0.25 μm gate GaN HEMT. At first, the carrier concentration profile and its mobility associated with the two-dimensional electron gas (2-DEG) were evaluated to model these resistances. Also, we have measured the threshold voltage and have studied its temperature dependence in this estimation process. Apart from that, thermal resistance and its change with temperature were investigated, as it is an important factor in describing the 2-DEG transport mechanism. We also estimated the variation of channel temperature for nine different temperatures (from 233 to 423 K) and validated the output with the measured data. The studied results can be used for the prediction of GaN HEMTs characteristics with temperature variation and can be included in the simulation packages.

Abstract

International audience; Autonomous landing is a vital option for Unmanned Aerial vehicles (UAV), as it can be a fail-safe in many critical cases. This paper demonstrates a complete solution for the soft landing application of a fully autonomous quadrotor on a moving pad considering external disturbance, model uncertainties, and actuators noise. The challenge starts with detecting the specially designed landing pad by an onboard vision system, a robust Algorithm estimates its coordinates precisely using a camera pose estimation. An enhanced Kalman filter by Madgwick data fusion of asynchronous sensors was developed for the best relative pose and heading reference. Different sizes and designs of the ArUco markers were attentively chosen to ensure the best detection at different altitudes and angles of approach. The landing trajectory is dynamically generated based on Jerk optimization, integrating a bio-inspired velocity profile by Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) to smoothen the landing. Model Predictive Control (MPC) was opted for quadrotor control to track the generated trajectory in time reference with the rejection of disturbance. The solution presents a soft mechanism for flat surface landing similar to human decision concept and control. The proposed method ensures absorption of the shock of impact, and the optimal tracking of the moving landing pad at less than 4 cm of error in Cartesian coordinates. Experimental results from pad relative pose estimation developed in Python, Data fusion experimentation of Attitude and Heading Reference system (AHRS), and Matlab simulations with a performance comparison between MPC and Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) control validate the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed landing task solution.

Abstract

International audience; Inthis paper, we present a new approach for emotion recognition from facial images. The proposed method is based on the association of a pretrained convolutional neural network (CNN) model (VGG16, ResNet50) with a multilayer perceptron (MLP) classifier. The pretrained CNN model is used as a feature extractor. For this purpose, we adapt the original architecture by adding a global average pooling layer (GAP) without any fine tuning of the network parameters. In order to avoid overfitting for the MLP classifier, we introduce the early stopping criterion. It is proved that the aforementioned elements contribute in improving the performance of our approach in terms of generalization ability. The procedure for emotion recognition from facial images is applied on the CK+ (extended Cohen-Kanad), JAFFE (Japanese Female Facial Expression) and KDEF (Karolinska Directed Emotional Faces) databases. The k-fold cross validation procedure is used for accuracy estimation. The experimental results show the effectiveness of our facial emotion recognition (FER) approach compared to the existing methods yielding to recognition rates of 100%, 96.40% and 98.78% for the CK+, JAFFE and KDEF databases, respectively. On the other hand, further improvement of our recognition performance is obtained for images from the JAFFE database by performing a data augmentation during the training phase. This allows to achieve an accuracy of 100% for this database. Four other metrics, namely the F1-score, positive and negative likelihood ratios and Mathews correlation coefficient, confirm as well the classification results obtained from accuracy.

Abstract

International audience; The aim of this paper is twofold: (1) to show the principal aspects of the way in which Newton conceived his mathematical concepts and methods and applied them to rational mechanics in his Principia; (2) to explain how the editors of the Geneva Edition interpreted, clarified, and made accessible to a broader public Newton’s perfect but often elliptic proofs. Following this line of inquiry, we will explain the successes of Newton’s mechanics, but also the problematic aspects of his perfect geometrical methods, more elegant, but less malleable than analytical procedures, of which Newton himself was one of the inventors. Furthermore, we will also consider the way in which Newtonianism was spread before in England and afterwards on continental Europe. In this respect the Geneva Edition plays a fundamental role because of its complete apparatus of notes, and because it appeared only thirteen years after the publication of the third edition of the Principia (1726). Finally, we will also confront some problems connected to the metaphysics of calculus. Therefore, the case of Newton is one of those in which, starting from mathematics applied to physics, it is possible to connect an impressive series of fundamental arguments such as the role of mathematics in science; the comparison between Newton’s geometrical methods and analytical methods; the way in which Newtonianism was spread as well as the philosophical implications of Newton’s mathematical concepts.

Abstract

Introduction Since the outbreak began in January 2020, Covid-19 has affected more than 161 million people worldwide and resulted in about 3.3 million deaths. Despite efforts to detect human infection with the virus as early as possible, the confirmatory test still requires the analysis of sputum or blood with estimated results available within approximately 30 minutes; this may potentially be followed by clinical referral if the patient shows signs of aggravated pneumonia. This work aims to implement a soft collar as a sound device dedicated to the objective evaluation of the pathophysiological state resulting from dysphonia of laryngeal origin or respiratory failure of inflammatory origin, in particular caused by Covid-19. Methods In this study, we exploit the vibrations of waves generated by the vocal and respiratory system of 30 people. A biocompatible acoustic sensor embedded in a soft collar around the neck collects these waves. The collar is also equipped with thermal sensors and a cross-data analysis module in both the temporal and frequency domains (STFT). The optimal coupling conditions and the electrical and dimensional characteristics of the sensors were defined based on a mathematical approach using a matrix formalism. Results The characteristics of the signals in the time domain combined with the quantities obtained from the STFT offer multidimensional information and a decision support tool for determining a pathophysiological state representative of the symptoms explored. The device, tested on 30 people, was able to differentiate patients with mild symptoms from those who had developed acute signs of respiratory failure on a severity scale of 1 to 10. Conclusion With the health constraints imposed by the effects of Covid-19, the heavy organization to be implemented resulting from the flow of diagnostics, tests and clinical management, it was urgent to develop innovative and safe biomedical technologies. This passive listening technique will contribute to the non-invasive assessment and dynamic observation of lesions. Moreover, it merits further examination to provide support for medical operators to improve clinical management. Abstract

Optimization algorithms often have several critical setting parameters and the improvement of the empirical performance of these algorithms depends on tuning them. Manually configuration of such parameters is a tedious task that results in unsatisfactory outputs. Therefore, several automatic algorithm configuration frameworks have been proposed to regulate the parameters of a given algorithm for a series of problem instances. Although the developed frameworks perform very well to deal with various problems, however, there is still a trade-off between the accuracy and budget requirements that need to be addressed. This work investigates the performance of unbalanced distribution of budget for different configurations to deal with the automatic algorithm configuration problem. Inspired by the bandit-based approaches, the main goal is to find a better configuration that substantially improves the performance of the target algorithm while using a smaller run time budget. In this work, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II is employed as a target algorithm using jMetalPy software platform and the multimodal multi-objective optimization (MMO) test suite of CEC’2020 is used as a set of test problems. We did a comprehensive comparison with other known methods including random search, Bayesian optimization, sequential model-based algorithm configuration (SMAC), iterated local search in parameter configuration space (ParamILS), iterated racing for automatic algorithm configuration (irace), and many-objective automatic algorithm configuration (MAC) methods. In order to characterize, validate and evaluate the performance of these methods, hypervolume (HV), generational distance, and epsilon indicator ( $$I_{{\epsilon }^{+}}$$ ) are used as performance indicators. The experimental results interestingly proved the efficiency of the proposed approach for automatic algorithm configuration with a minimum time budget in comparison with other competitors.

Abstract

International audience; In cattle farming, the artificial insemination technique is a biotechnology that brings to farmers a wide range of benefits namely health security, genetic gain and economic costs. The main condition for the success of artificial insemination within cattle is the heat (or estrus) detection. In this context, several cow heat detection systems have been recently proposed in the literature to assist the farmer in this task. Nevertheless, they are mainly based on the analysis of the physical behavior of the cow which may be affected by several factors related to its health and its environment. In this paper, we present a new vision system for cow heat detection which is based on the analysis of the genital tract of the cow. The main core of our system is a CNN model that has been designed and tailored for analyzing endoscopic images collected using an innovative insemination technology named Eye breed. The conducted experiments on two datasets namely our own dataset and a public dataset show the high accuracy of our CNN model (more than 97% for both datasets) outperforming 19 methods from the state of the art. Moreover, we propose an optimized version of our model for an Android deployment by exploiting several techniques namely quantization, GPU acceleration and video downsampling. The conducted tests on a smart-phone shows that our heat detection system has a response time of a few seconds.

Abstract

International audience; Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have become an important component in the Internet of things (IoT) field. In WSNs, multi-channel protocols have been developed to overcome some limitations related to the throughput and delivery rate which have become necessary for many IoT applications that require sufficient bandwidth to transmit a large amount of data. However, the requirement of frequent negotiation for channel assignment in distributed multi-channel protocols incurs an extra-large communication overhead which results in a reduction of the network lifetime. To deal with this requirement in an energy-efficient way is a challenging task. Hence, the Reinforcement Learning (RL) approach for channel assignment is used to overcome this problem. Nevertheless, the use of the RL approach requires a number of iterations to obtain the best solution which in turn creates a communication overhead and time-wasting. In this paper, a Self-schedule based Cooperative multi-agent Reinforcement Learning for Channel Assignment (SCRL CA) approach is proposed to improve the network lifetime and performance. The proposal addresses both regular traffic scheduling and assignment of the available orthogonal channels in an energy-efficient way. We solve the cooperation between the RL agents problem by using the self-schedule method to accelerate the RL iterations, reduce the communication overhead and balance the energy consumption in the route selection process. Therefore, two algorithms are proposed, the first one is for the Static channel assignment (SSCRL CA) while the second one is for the Dynamic channel assignment (DSCRL CA). The results of extensive simulation experiments show the effectiveness of our approach in improving the network lifetime and performance through the two algorithms.

However, these two approaches are very rarely combined, although they are highly complementary: our visual system is good at recognizing spatial patterns, whereas our auditory system is better tuned for temporal patterns. In this article, data representation methods are proposed that combine visualization, sonification, and spatial audio techniques, in order to optimize the user’s perception of spatial and temporal patterns in a single display, to increase the feeling of immersion, and to take advantage of multimodal integration mechanisms. Three seismic data sets are used to illustrate the methods, covering different physical phenomena, time scales, spatial distributions, and spatio-temporal dynamics. The methods are adapted to the specificities of each data set, and to the amount of information that the designer wants to display. This leads to further developments, namely the use of audification with two time scales, the switch from pure audification to time-modulated noise, and the switch from pure audification to sonic icons. First user feedback from live demonstrations indicates that the methods presented in this article seem to enhance the perception of spatio-temporal patterns, which is a key parameter to the understanding of seismically active systems, and a step towards apprehending the processes that drive this activity.

Abstract

Full a posteriori verification of the correctness of modern software systems is practically infeasible due to the sheer complexity resulting from their intrinsic concurrent nature. An alternative approach consists of ensuring correctness by construction. We discuss the Rigorous System Design (RSD) approach, which relies on a sequence of semantics-preserving transformations to obtain an implementation of the system from a high-level model while preserving all the properties established along the way. In particular, we highlight some of the key requirements for the feasibility of such an approach, namely availability of (1) methods and tools for the design of correct-by-construction high-level models and (2) definition and proof of the validity of suitable domain-specific abstractions. We summarise the results of the extended versions of seven papers selected among those presented at the $$1\mathrm {st}$$ 1 st and the $$2\mathrm {nd}$$ 2 nd International Workshops on Methods and Tools for Rigorous System Design (MeTRiD 2018–2019), indicating how they contribute to the advancement of the RSD approach.

Abstract

International audience; After the birth of thermodynamics’ second principle—outlined in Carnot's Réflexions sur la puissance motrice du feu (1824)—several studies provided new arguments in the field. Mainly, they concerned the thermodynamics’ first principle—including energy conceptualisation—, the analytical aspects of the heat propagation, the statistical aspects of the mechanical theory of heat. In other words, the second half of nineteenth century was marked by an intense interdisciplinary research activity between physics and chemistry: new disciplines applied to the heat developed in the form of analytical, mechanical and statistical theories. Inside all these theories, entropy—the brand-new function that Clausius coined in his Mechanical theory of heat—started to play a central epistemic role. In the present paper, we analyse some steps of the historical process of conceptualisation of such function from 1850 to 1902. Particularly, we retrace the historical–foundational path that—starting from Clausius’ Second Law—lead Boltzmann and Gibbs to their distinguished formulations of statistical entropy. As usual, our research has been unrolled through the analyses of primary sources and by leaning on critical readings of the secondary literature. As for the methodological approach, text analysis of historical documents constituted our privileged modus operandi. This paper is the expression of a collaborative historical research program focused on the thermodynamic foundations of physics–chemistry relationship; early results have already been published by the same authors upon the concepts of reversibility––and––thermal equilibrium.

Abstract

International audience; Bayesian Optimization has become a widely used approach to perform optimization involving computationally intensive black-box functions, such as the design optimization of complex engineering systems. It is often based on Gaussian Process regression as a Bayesian surrogate model of the exact functions. Bayesian Optimization has been applied to single and multi-objective optimization problems. In case of multi-objective optimization, the Bayesian models used in optimization often consider the multiple objectives separately and do not take into account the possible correlation between them near the Pareto front. In this paper, a Multi-Objective Bayesian Optimization algorithm based on Deep Gaussian Process is proposed in order to jointly model the objective functions. It allows to take advantage of the correlations (linear and non-linear) between the objectives in order to improve the search space exploration and speed up the convergence to the Pareto front. The proposed algorithm is compared to classical Bayesian Optimization in four analytical functions and two aerospace engineering problems.

International audience; One of the biggest challenges in relation to the modernistic vision of smart city technology is to provide confdent autonomous energy, notably in terms of power storage. If you want to change an existing lifestyle, you cannot ignore the basic concepts collected from basic physics. The subject of Metamaterials stands for an important research area that can be explored and used to come up with unparalleled ideas about the properties and functions that are completely absent from natural materials. In contrast to other bold technologies, combining a simple layered surface with appropriate material selection makes it possible to pattern and manufacture new types of solar cells that work in a wide frequency range. In this article, we propose a simple method to boost the coupling interaction between metallic gold nanowires with multiple MoS2 layers. The innovation of this work is that the thickness layer changes have great stability in the infuence of the absorption performance and electric feld distribution in the visible light and near-infrared spectra. Therefore, this new design can be seen as very important in many felds from sensing to solar cell applications

Abstract

International audience; Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), based on the enhancement of the Raman signal of molecules positioned within a few nanometres from a structured metal surface, is ideally suited to provide bacterial-specific molecular fingerprints which can be used for analytical purposes. However, for some complex structures such as bacteria, the generation of reproducible SERS spectra is still a challenging task. Among the various factors influencing the SERS variability (such as the nature of SERS-active substrate, Raman parameters and bacterial specificity), we demonstrate in this study that the environment of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria deposited on ultra-thin silver films also impacts the origin of the SERS spectra. In the case of densely packed bacteria, the obtained SERS signatures were either characteristic of the secretion of adenosine triphosphate for Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) or the cell wall and the pili/flagella for Escherichia coli (E. coli), allowing for an easy discrimination between the various strains. In the case of isolated bacteria, SERS mapping together with principal component analysis revealed some variabilities of the spectra as a function of the bacteria environment and the bactericidal effect of the silver. However, the variability does not preclude the SERS signatures of various E. coli strains to be discriminated.

Abstract

The roadmap of future innovative device developments foresees the reduction of material dimensions down to nanometer scale and the incorporation of novel degrees of freedom. For instance, electrons and holes in 2D semiconductors like MoS2 monolayers exhibit a unique coupling between the spin and the crystal momentum, also referred to as the valley. A crucial requirement for future applications is therefore the possibility to initialise the spin/valley degree of freedom in these materials. Here we investigate the optical initialisation of the valley degree of freedom in charge-tunable MoS2 monolayers encapsulated with hexagonal boron nitride at cryogenic temperatures. We report in photoluminescence a large steady state valley polarization of the different excitonic complexes following circularly-polarized laser excitation. We reveal efficient valley initialisation of positively-charged excitons, which have so far proved to be elusive in non-encapsulated monolayers due to defect and laser-induced large electron doping. We find that negatively-charged excitons present a polarization of 70% which is unusually large for non-resonant excitation. We attribute this large valley polarization to the particular band structure of MoS2. In addition, we demonstrate that circular excitation induces a dynamical polarization of resident electrons and holes––as recently shown in tungsten-based monolayers.

Abstract

Effective symbol detection, channel estimation and decoding of channel codes require an accurate characterization of the noise probability distribution. In many systems, notably the internet of things, noise is largely in the form of interference, arising from a massive number of simultaneous transmissions from uncoordinated devices. Obtaining the probability distribution of the interference is a challenging problem due to the use of non-orthogonal multiple access schemes over several subcarriers (leading to multivariate statistical models) and the heavy-tailed nature of the interference due to the random locations of devices. In this paper, we derive a novel tractable characterization of the interference probability distribution based on an application of Sklar’s theorem to develop a combination of $$\alpha$$ α -stable and t-copula dependence models. We demonstrate that this formulation produces an accurate statistical modeling framework that admits efficient parameter estimation methods. As an illustration of the utility of our models, we develop a simple-to-implement nonlinear receiver when a binary signal is transmitted over all subcarriers by the desired transmitter, which is effective in a range of scenarios and can significantly outperform existing approaches.

Abstract

International audience; This study investigated, for the first time, the antimicrobial properties of polyethylene glycol-functionalized poly(N-phenylglycine) nanoparticles (PNPG-PEG NPs). PNPG-PEG NPs exhibit high extinction coefficient in the near-infrared (NIR) region; they can convert light energy into heat energy with high thermal transformation efficiency. Additionally, they can generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon light irradiation. Also, PNPG-PEG NPs are not cytotoxic. All these properties make them appropriate for combined dual-modal photothermal and photodynamic therapies. The antibacterial activity of PNPG-PEG NPs was assessed using Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) pathogenic strains. The results revealed that NIR light (810 nm) irradiation for 10 min could kill effectively the planktonic bacteria and destroy Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus biofilms. The results demonstrated that PNPG-PEG NPs represent a very effective nanoplatform for killing of pathogenic bacteria.

Abstract

Bayesian Optimization using Gaussian Processes is a popular approach to deal with optimization involving expensive black-box functions. However, because of the assumption on the stationarity of the covariance function defined in classic Gaussian Processes, this method may not be adapted for non-stationary functions involved in the optimization problem. To overcome this issue, Deep Gaussian Processes can be used as surrogate models instead of classic Gaussian Processes. This modeling technique increases the power of representation to capture the non-stationarity by considering a functional composition of stationary Gaussian Processes, providing a multiple layer structure. This paper investigates the application of Deep Gaussian Processes within Bayesian Optimization context. The specificities of this optimization method are discussed and highlighted with academic test cases. The performance of Bayesian Optimization with Deep Gaussian Processes is assessed on analytical test cases and aerospace design optimization problems and compared to the state-of-the-art stationary and non-stationary Bayesian Optimization approaches.

Abstract

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease with first symptoms similar to the flu. COVID-19 appeared first in China and very quickly spreads to the rest of the world, causing then the 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic. In many cases, this disease causes pneumonia. Since pulmonary infections can be observed through radiography images, this paper investigates deep learning methods for automatically analyzing query chest X-ray images with the hope to bring precision tools to health professionals towards screening the COVID-19 and diagnosing confirmed patients. In this context, training datasets, deep learning architectures and analysis strategies have been experimented from publicly open sets of chest X-ray images. Tailored deep learning models are proposed to detect pneumonia infection cases, notably viral cases. It is assumed that viral pneumonia cases detected during an epidemic COVID-19 context have a high probability to presume COVID-19 infections. Moreover, easy-to-apply health indicators are proposed for estimating infection status and predicting patient status from the detected pneumonia cases. Experimental results show possibilities of training deep learning models over publicly open sets of chest X-ray images towards screening viral pneumonia. Chest X-ray test images of COVID-19 infected patients are successfully diagnosed through detection models retained for their performances. Abstract

In this paper, under a fixed directed graph, the distributed cooperative synchronization of heterogeneous uncertain nonlinear chaotic delayed fractional-order multi-agent systems (FOMASs) with a leader of bounded unknown input is investigated, where the fractional orders and system parameters are uncertain and the controller gains are heterogeneous due to imperfect implementation. It should be noted that the study is more general by considering the FOMASs with time delays, unknown leader, heterogeneity, and unknown nonlinear dynamics. Firstly, a differential evolution-based parameter estimation method is proposed to identify the uncertain parameters. Then based on the identified parameters, by using the matrix theory, graph theory, fractional derivative inequality, and comparison principle of linear fractional equation with delay, a heterogeneous discontinuous controller is designed to achieve the distributed cooperative synchronization asymptotically. Thirdly, a heterogeneous continuous controller is further constructed to suppress the undesirable chattering behavior, where uniformly ultimately bounded synchronization tracking errors can be achieved and tuned as small as desired. Finally, numerical simulations are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed parameter estimation scheme and the designed control algorithms.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we propose and investigate a multi-Gigabits-per-second baseband signal over Standard Single-Mode Fiber (SSMF) link using a 16-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (16-QAM). This architecture can be deployed within the context of fifth-generation (5G) Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN). It consists of 4 × 4 Quasi-Orthogonal Space–Time Block Code Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing (QOSTBC-GFDM) and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (QOSTBC-OFDM) waveforms. It is based on the implementation of a third order Volterra Nonlinear Equalizer (VNLE) in the Remote Radio Unit (RRU). The VNLE has been efficiently employed to reduce the impact of the harmful effect of the photonic devices. A Zero Forcing (ZF) equalizer has been used at the User Equipment (UE) to overcome the wireless channel impairments. Our research shows that VNLE can be a promised solution to compensate signal distortions and non-linearity effects. Furthermore, this study shows that QOSTBC-GFDM is more efficient than QOSTBC-OFDM in terms of Out-Of-Band (OOB) emission and Spectral Efficiency (SE). Moreover, a comparable performance between the two waveforms in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) and Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) is attained.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we address the problem of computing suitable representations of the set of approximate solutions of a given multi-objective optimization problem via stochastic search algorithms. For this, we will propose different archiving strategies for the selection of the candidate solutions maintained by the generation process of the stochastic search process, and investigate them further on analytically and empirically. For all archivers we will provide upper bounds on the approximation quality as well as on the cardinality of the limit solution set. We conclude this work by a comparative study on some test problems in order to visualize the effect of all novel archiving strategies.

Abstract

International audience; Cyber-physical systems have developed into a very active research field, with a broad range of challenges and research directions going from requirements, to implementation and simulation, as well as validation and verification to guarantee essential properties. In this survey paper, we focus exclusively on the following fundamental issue: how to link physicality and computation, continuous time-space dynamics with discrete untimed ones? We consider that cyber-physical system design flow involves the following three main steps: 1) cyber-physical systems modeling; 2) discretization for executability; and 3) simulation and implementation. We review—and strive to provide insight into possible approaches for addressing—the key issues, for each of these three steps.

Abstract

International audience; A new algorithmic approach for solving the stochastic Steiner tree problem based on three procedures for computing lower bounds (dual ascent, Lagrangian relaxation, Benders decomposition) is introduced. Our method is derived from a new integer linear programming formulation, which is shown to be strongest among all known formulations. The resulting method, which relies on an interplay of the dual information retrieved from the respective dual procedures, computes upper and lower bounds and combines them with several rules for fixing variables in order to decrease the size of problem instances. The effectiveness of our method is compared in an extensive computational study with the state-of-the-art exact approach, which employs a Benders decomposition based on two-stage branch-and-cut, and a genetic algorithm introduced during the DIMACS implementation challenge on Steiner trees. Our results indicate that the presented method significantly outperforms existing ones, both on benchmark instances from literature, as well as on large-scale telecommunication networks.

Abstract

International audience; Starting from Gallium Nitride epitaxially grown on silicon, pre-stressed micro-resonators with integrated piezoelectric transducers have been designed, fabricated, and characterized. In clamped-clamped beams, it is well known that tensile stress can be used to increase the resonant frequency. Here we calculate the mode shape functions of out-of-plane flexural modes in pre-stressed beams and we derive a model to predict both the resonant frequency and the piezoelectric actuation factor. We show that a good agreement between theory and experimental results can be obtained and we derive the optimal design for the electromechanical transduction. Finally, our model predicts an increase of the quality factor due to the tensile stress, which is confirmed by experimental measurements under vacuum. This study demonstrates how to take advantage from the material quality and initial stress resulting of the epitaxial process.

Abstract

International audience; Software engineering research now considers that no system is an island, but it is part of an ecosystem involving other systems, developers, and users. When a framework or a library evolves, its clients often must adapt. For example, client developers might need to adapt to functionalities, client systems might need to be adapted to a new API, and client users might need to adapt to a new user interface. The consequences of these changes are yet unclear: what proportion of the ecosystem might be expected to react, how long might it take for a change to diffuse in the ecosystem, do all clients react in the same way? This paper reports an exploratory study aimed at observing API evolution and its impact on a large software ecosystem, Pharo, which has about 3,600 distinct systems, and six years of evolution. We analyze 118 API changes in the context of method replacement and suggestion, and answer research questions regarding the magnitude, duration, extension, and consistency of such changes in the ecosystem. The results of this study help to characterize the impact of API evolution in large software ecosystems and provide the basis to better understand how such impact can be alleviated.

The results highlight the impact and interplay of different factors: the expressive power of basic queries, the embedding of computation into data (as in Active XML), and the use of deterministic vs. nondeterministic control. All languages are Turing complete, but not necessarily query complete in the sense of Chandra and Harel. Indeed, we show that some combinations of features yield serious limitations, analogous to FO-k definability in the relational context. On the other hand, the limitations come with benefits such as the existence of powerful normal forms providing opportunities for optimization. Other languages are ``almost'' complete, but fall short because of subtle limitations reminiscent of the copy elimination problem in object databases.

Abstract

International audience; The large number of subcarriers, used in OFDM systems, increases the sensivity to frequency offset which results from a Doppler shift, due to mobile movement, as well as from a mismatch between the carrier frequencies at the transmitter and receiver. The problem of channel estimation in a practical OFDM receiver that suffers from CFO has been addressed in this paper. We first derived the modified MUSIC based blind CFO estimator. Next, we propose new joint training-based and joint semi-blind CFO and channel estimation for OFDM systems. Whereas the training-based estimator only assumes knowledge of pilot tones, the semi-blind estimator assumes knowledge of the virtual subcarriers (VSCs). For both estimators we derive a maximum likelihood (ML) algorithm for block processing and LMS algorithm for adaptive processing. It is demonstrated that the CFO estimators are able to perform well with a very small number of OFDM blocks. The performance of our estimators was investigated by simulations.

Abstract

International audience; The problem of phase regulation for a population of oscillating systems is considered. The proposed control strategy is based on a Phase Response Curve (PRC) model of an oscillator (the first order reduced model obtained for linearized system and inputs with infinitesimal amplitude). It is proven that the control provides phase resetting for the original nonlinear system. Next the problem of phase resetting for a network of oscillators is considered when applying a common control input. Performance of the obtained solutions is demonstrated via computer simulation for three different models of circadian/neural oscillators.

Abstract

International audience; This paper investigates the problem of fault detection filter design for discrete-time switched systems with interval time-varying delays. The residual generator is constructed based on a mode-dependent fault detection filter, i.e., the designed fault detection filter is also a switched system as well. By constructing a novel switched Lyapunov functional, a new criterion is obtained for the residual system. Based on this, a sufficient condition for the existence of the above filter is established in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The designed fault detection filter can guarantee the difference between the generated residual signal and the fault signal as small as possible. An example is provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

International audience; There is a significant need for tools to detect damage in composite materials, whether for the development of models, the characterization of materials or the validation of structures. However, many different methods are available, each with its own advantages and drawbacks, making the choice difficult when setting up tests. This paper will present multi-instrumented uni-axial tests on [02,902]s carbon-epoxy samples at 0', 90' and 45'. These tests feature DIC, thermography and acoustic measurements with a standard microphone in order to explore the capabilities of each of these methods. The processing is detailed and the information extracted from each method will be discussed in order to provide an overview of the uses for each method.

Abstract

Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic has posed a serious health risk, especially in vulnerable populations. Even before the pandemic, people with mental disorders had worse physical health outcomes compared to the general population. This umbrella review investigated whether having a pre-pandemic mental disorder was associated with worse physical health outcomes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods Following a pre-registered protocol available on the Open Science Framework platform, we searched Ovid MEDLINE All, Embase (Ovid), PsycINFO (Ovid), CINAHL, and Web of Science up to the 6th of October 2021 for systematic reviews on the impact of COVID-19 on people with pre-existing mental disorders. The following outcomes were considered: risk of contracting the SARS-CoV-2 infection, risk of severe illness, COVID-19 related mortality risk, risk of long-term physical symptoms after COVID-19. For meta-analyses, we considered adjusted odds ratio (OR) as effect size measure. Screening, data extraction and quality assessment with the AMSTAR 2 tool have been done in parallel and duplicate. Results We included five meta-analyses and four narrative reviews. The meta-analyses reported that people with any mental disorder had an increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection (OR: 1.71, 95% CI 1.09–2.69), severe illness course (OR from 1.32 to 1.77, 95%CI between 1.19–1.46 and 1.29–2.42, respectively) and COVID-19 related mortality (OR from 1.38 to 1.52, 95%CI between 1.15–1.65 and 1.20–1.93, respectively) as compared to the general population. People with anxiety disorders had an increased risk of SAR-CoV-2 infection, but not increased mortality. People with mood and schizophrenia spectrum disorders had an increased COVID-19 related mortality but without evidence of increased risk of severe COVID-19 illness. Narrative reviews were consistent with findings from the meta-analyses. Discussion and conclusions As compared to the general population, there is strong evidence showing that people with pre-existing mental disorders suffered from worse physical health outcomes due to the COVID-19 pandemic and may therefore be considered a risk group similar to people with underlying physical conditions. Factors likely involved include living accommodations with barriers to social distancing, cardiovascular comorbidities, psychotropic medications and difficulties in accessing high-intensity medical care.

12th International Symposium on Parameterized and Exact Computation (IPEC 2017); International audience; Given a graph G, we define bcg(G) as the minimum k for which G can be contracted to the uniformly triangulated grid Γk. A graph class G has the SQGC property if every graph G ∈ G has treewidth O(bcg(G)c) for some 1 ≤ c < 2. The SQGC property is important for algo- rithm design as it defines the applicability horizon of a series of meta-algorithmic results, in the framework of bidimensionality theory, related to fast parameterized algorithms, kernelization, and approximation schemes. These results apply to a wide family of problems, namely problems that are contraction-bidimensional. Our main combinatorial result reveals a general family of graph classes that satisfy the SQGC property and includes bounded-degree string graphs. This considerably extends the applicability of bidimensionality theory for several intersection graph classes of 2-dimensional geometrical objects.

Abstract

Background Internal tandem duplications in the FLT3 gene, termed FLT3-ITDs, are useful molecular markers in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) for patient risk stratification and follow-up. FLT3-ITDs are increasingly screened through high-throughput sequencing (HTS) raising the need for robust and efficient algorithms. We developed a new algorithm, which performs no alignment and uses little resources, to identify and quantify FLT3-ITDs in HTS data. Results Our algorithm (FiLT3r) focuses on the k-mers from reads covering FLT3 exons 14 and 15. We show that those k-mers bring enough information to accurately detect, determine the length and quantify FLT3-ITD duplications. We compare the performances of FiLT3r to state-of-the-art alternatives and to fragment analysis, the gold standard method, on a cohort of 185 AML patients sequenced with capture-based HTS. On this dataset FiLT3r is more precise (no false positive nor false negative) than the other software evaluated. We also assess the software on public RNA-Seq data, which confirms the previous results and shows that FiLT3r requires little resources compared to other software. Conclusion FiLT3r is a free software available at https://gitlab.univ-lille.fr/filt3r/filt3r. The repository also contains a Snakefile to reproduce our experiments. We show that FiLT3r detects FLT3-ITDs better than other software while using less memory and time.

Abstract

Recent learning strategies such as reinforcement learning (RL) have favored the transition from applied artificial intelligence to general artificial intelligence. One of the current challenges of RL in healthcare relates to the development of a controller to teach a musculoskeletal model to perform dynamic movements. Several solutions have been proposed. However, there is still a lack of investigations exploring the muscle control problem from a biomechanical point of view. Moreover, no studies using biological knowledge to develop plausible motor control models for pathophysiological conditions make use of reward reshaping. Consequently, the objective of the present work was to design and evaluate specific bioinspired reward function strategies for human locomotion learning within an RL framework. The deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) method for a single-agent RL problem was applied. A 3D musculoskeletal model (8 DoF and 22 muscles) of a healthy adult was used. A virtual interactive environment was developed and simulated using opensim-rl library. Three reward functions were defined for walking, forward, and side falls. The training process was performed with Google Cloud Compute Engine. The obtained outcomes were compared to the NIPS 2017 challenge outcomes, experimental observations, and literature data. Regarding learning to walk, simulated musculoskeletal models were able to walk from 18 to 20.5 m for the best solutions. A compensation strategy of muscle activations was revealed. Soleus, tibia anterior, and vastii muscles are main actors of the simple forward fall. A higher intensity of muscle activations was also noted after the fall. All kinematics and muscle patterns were consistent with experimental observations and literature data. Regarding the side fall, an intensive level of muscle activation on the expected fall side to unbalance the body was noted. The obtained outcomes suggest that computational and human resources as well as biomechanical knowledge are needed together to develop and evaluate an efficient and robust RL solution. As perspectives, current solutions will be extended to a larger parameter space in 3D. Furthermore, a stochastic reinforcement learning model will be investigated in the future in scope with the uncertainties of the musculoskeletal model and associated environment to provide a general artificial intelligence solution for human locomotion learning. Abstract

This experimental study is dedicated to the measurements of gas permeability under confinement and to preliminary characterizations of salt rock poromechanical behavior. Salt porosity and permeability under loading are recorded either with argon or hydrogen gas. Permeability measurements carried out with both gases led to similar values. Poromechanical effects occur but they are weak and strongly dependent on the level of confining pressure. Furthermore, triaxial tests have been used to investigate the evolution of permeability of damaged salt samples with time and confinement. These experimental characterizations are finally analysed in the context of gas storage applications.

Abstract

We introduce STrain Resolution ON assembly Graphs (STRONG), which identifies strains de novo, from multiple metagenome samples. STRONG performs coassembly, and binning into metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs), and stores the coassembly graph prior to variant simplification. This enables the subgraphs and their unitig per-sample coverages, for individual single-copy core genes (SCGs) in each MAG, to be extracted. A Bayesian algorithm, BayesPaths, determines the number of strains present, their haplotypes or sequences on the SCGs, and abundances. STRONG is validated using synthetic communities and for a real anaerobic digestor time series generates haplotypes that match those observed from long Nanopore reads. Abstract

In this paper, a model-based fault detection and isolation (FDI) method is proposed, with the objective to ensure a fault-tolerant autonomous mobile robot navigation. The proposed solution uses an informational framework, which is able to detect and isolate both sensor and actuator faults, including the case of multiple faults occurrence. An information filter with a prediction model based on encoders data is adopted. For the diagnosis layer, a bank of filters are used. Residuals are generated by computing the Kullback-Leibler Divergence between the probability distribution of the predicted estimation with updated estimation obtained from sensors measurements. In order to isolate encoder and actuator faults, a secondary information filter with a prediction model based on a closed-loop controller is added. An additional bank of filters is developed, and extra residuals based on the Kullback-Leibler Divergence are generated. In the proposed method, the two designed filters supervise each other, which improves fault diagnosis, by taking into account all available information of the system, from control objective to multi-sensor data fusion. Actuator and sensor faults are treated within the same frame during the fusion process, and multiple faults occurrence is considered. A real-time experimentation on a real differential mobile robot is performed and demonstrates the efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract

International audience; Amplicon-based next-generation sequencing (NGS) of immunoglobulin (IG) and T-cell receptor (TR) gene rearrangements for clonality assessment, marker identification and quantification of minimal residual disease (MRD) in lymphoid neoplasms has been the focus of intense research, development and application. However, standardization and validation in a scientifically controlled multicentre setting is still lacking. Therefore, IG/TR assay development and design, including bioinformatics, was performed within the EuroClonality-NGS working group and validated for MRD marker identification in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). Five EuroMRD ALL reference laboratories performed IG/TR NGS in 50 diagnostic ALL samples, and compared results with those generated through routine IG/TR Sanger sequencing. A central polytarget quality control (cPT-QC) was used to monitor primer performance, and a central in-tube quality control (cIT-QC) was spiked into each sample as a library-specific quality control and calibrator. NGS identified 259 (average 5.2/sample, range 0–14) clonal sequences vs. Sanger-sequencing 248 (average 5.0/sample, range 0–14). NGS primers covered possible IG/TR rearrangement types more completely compared with local multiplex PCR sets and enabled sequencing of bi-allelic rearrangements and weak PCR products. The cPT-QC showed high reproducibility across all laboratories. These validated and reproducible quality-controlled EuroClonality-NGS assays can be used for standardized NGS-based identification of IG/TR markers in lymphoid malignancies.

Abstract

International audience; A method dedicated to the measurement of low surface tension coefficients in binary fluids is proposed. The method which is not intrusive and does not interfere with the volume/weight proportion of liquid composing the binary mixture utilizes excitation of progressive capillary waves by pulsed radiation pressure force of focused ultrasound beam. A known dispersion relationship for gravity-capillary waves is used to evaluate the surface tension coefficient. The experiments are carried out in microgravity conditions in order to make the capillary term of the relationship strongly dominant and thus to reduce artifacts in acquired data.
