The occurrence of the genera and morphospecies of Diapriidae (Insecta, Hymenoptera) in four habitats (stands) of eastern Mozambique, was studied. The genus Miota is recorded from the Afrotropical region for the first time. Overall, diapriids were represented by 52 morphospecies from 10 genera of the subfamilies Belytinae and Diapriinae. The highest occurrence (140 specimens) and the largest taxonomic diversity (42 morphospecies from 9 genera) were found for the diapriids in the native miombo stand (Brachystegia sp.), followed by the eucalypt, Eucalyptus spp., (92 specimens, 24 morphospecies from 8 genera), the loblolly pine, Pinus taeda, (62 specimens, 19 morphospecies from 7 genera), and the wild loquat (Uapaca kirkiana) stands (40 specimens, 14 morphospecies from 7 genera). The most morphospecies-rich genera were Basalys, Coptera and Trichopria (15, 14 and 7 morphospecies respectively), with Coptera being the most specimen-rich in all samples. The same diapriid morphospecies prevailed in all studied habitats. The abundance estimators ACE and Chao1 predicted 61 (60 in Chao1) species for miombo stand, that is nearly 3.0 times richer than the 22 species estimated for wild loquat, 2.1 (2.6) times richer than the 29 (23) species estimated for loblolly pine and 1.5 times richer than the 40 (39) species estimated for eucalypt. The diapriids of the exotic eucalypt and native miombo stands were most similar, and clustered together with diapriids of the exotic loblolly pine stand.

Trichopria anastrephae Lima and Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae (Rondani) naturally occur together with the pest Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) in Brazil. Due to their co-occurrence, it is important to understand competitive interactions between these pupal parasitoids and how this may impact D. suzukii parasitism levels. Thus, the aim of the study was to evaluate the interspecific competition between T. anastrephae and P. vindemmiae. Bioassays were performed with and without time advantage, with different exposure (treatments) of D. suzukii pupae to parasitoid species. Verified that there was a higher parasitism and emergence rate of T. anastrephae adults. This was not observed for P. vindemmiae that decreases the parasitism rate in the presence of T. anastrephae. In strawberry fruits bioassay, T. anastrephae females showed capacity to parasitize pupae of D. suzukii inside strawberry fruits. However, P. vindemmiae had a lower parasitism rate and consequently, fewer insects emerged when used alone or associated with the presence of T. anastrephae. Therefore, we can conclude that there is interspecific competition between T. anastrephae and P. vindemmiae in D. suzukii pupae, with T. anastrephae having a higher competitive advantage.

Fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) are major constraints on the production and marketing of fruits in African tropical and subtropical countries. In a perspective to manage these fly pests, an inventory of parasitoids associated with fruit flies was carried out from 2009 to 2011 in southern Togo through various fruit incubations. Nine species of native hymenopteran parasitoids associated with eight fly species belonging to five genera Bactrocera, Ceratitis, Dacus, Trirhithrum and Zeugodacus were recovered. Trichopria sp. (Diapriidae) was the most abundant parasitoid. However, the numbers of Braconidae (Diachasmimorpha fullawayi Silvestri, Fopius caudatus Szépligeti and Asobara sp.), Figitidae (Aganaspis sp.), Pteromalidae (Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae Rondani and Spalangia sp.), Eulophidae (Tetrastichus giffardianus Silvestri) and Chalcididae (Dirhinus giffardii Silvestri) species were relatively low. The rate of parasitism of different species of recovered parasitoids ranged from 0.6 to 40%. This is an asset for future surveys in the center and northern regions and studies of interactions between fruit flies and their natural enemies in Togo.

The present study aimed to analyze the chemical composition of five species of the genus Piper (P. aduncum L.; P. crassinervium Kunth.; P. malacophyllum Prels.; P. gaudichaudianum Kunth.; P. marginatum L.), and assess their toxicity to the adults of Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) and the pupal parasitoid Trichopria anastrephae Lima (Hymenoptera: Diapriidae). The major compounds were monoterpene hydrocarbons (5.3–60.9%); oxygenated monoterpenes (13.3%); sesquiterpenes hydrocarbons (8.3–45.3%), oxygenated sesquiterpenes (5.2–58.8%); and arylpropanoids (15.2–29.6%). In bioassays of ingestion and topical application, essential oils (EOs) from P. aduncum, P. gaudichaudianum, and P. marginatum killed approximately 100% of adults of D. suzukii, similarly to the insecticide based on spinetoram (75 mg L−1) (96.2% of mortality). Besides, the dry residues from P. aduncum, P. gaudichaudianum, and P. marginatum provided a repellent effect on oviposition (≅ 7 eggs/fruits) and negative effects on egg viability (≅ 2 larvae/fruits) of D. suzukii on artificial fruits. The invasive vinegar fly, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), is a major economic pest of soft-skinned fruit in the USA. In order to identify suitable biological control agents in Wisconsin, we assessed the presence and impact of potential natural enemies of D. suzukii in tart cherry and raspberry farms with documented D. suzukii populations. Yellow sticky cards and sentinel traps baited with D. suzukii or D. melanogaster larvae and pupae were deployed in these agricultural areas in the foliage and near the soil surface. Four families of parasitoids with known species that successfully parasitize D. suzukii (Pteromalidae, Braconidae, Figitidae, and Diapriidae) were found on sticky traps at all sampling sites. However, no parasitoids emerged from D. suzukii or D. melanogaster sentinel larvae or pupae throughout the duration of the field assessment. Predation was documented on sentinel D. suzukii pupae (1–4%) and sentinel D. melanogaster pupae (5–8%). The majority of sentinel pupae never emerged upon their return from the field and showed no evidence of field predation. Between 70 and 92% of recovered D. suzukii pupae were dead, and 46–72% of D. melanogaster pupae were dead. The absence of parasitoids found emerging from the sentinel drosophilid larvae and pupae and overall low levels of predation suggests that native biological control may provide limited potential as a management option against D. suzukii in Wisconsin at this time.

The pupal parasitoid Trichopria anastrephae Lima (Hymenoptera: Diapriidae) shows potential to control Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), and understanding the behavior of this parasitoid in challenging environments is important to obtain a higher efficiency in mass rearing and in biological control programs. This study aimed to verify the effects of extrinsic intraspecific competition and the absence of host on the parasitism of T. anastrephae in D. suzukii pupae. Therefore, to evaluate the parasitism of T. anastrephae under intraspecific competition, groups of 20 pupae (24 h old) of D. suzukii were offered for different densities of parasitoids (1, 3, 5, or 10 couples) during a 7-day period. Whereas to evaluate the effects of host deprivation on parasitism of T. anastrephae, we tested different treatments: T1-no deprivation, T2-complete deprivation, T3-deprivation every other day, T4-deprivation for 3 days, and T5-deprivation for 7 days. The increase of density of parasitoids resulted in an increase of oviposition scars on pupae and a longer biological cycle, suggesting the occurrence of superparasitism. Increased density also resulted in a higher percentage of attacked pupae, but did not affect parasitoids emergence nor sex ratio. Host deprivation affected number of parasitized pupae, number and sex ratio of offspring, and the longevity of females. Based on our findings, competition among females do not impair offspring viability, and host deprivation for a period up to 7 days do not influence parasitism capacity, indicating that it can be used as a pre-release strategy.

Drosophila suzukii is native to East Asia and an invasive pest of fruit crops widely established in the Americas and Europe. The lack of effective indigenous parasitoids of D. suzukii in the invaded regions prompted surveys for co-evolved parasitoids in Yunnan Province, China, from 2013 to 2016. From banana-baited traps (2013-2015), 458 parasitoids of drosophilids were reared, comprised of Braconidae (49.56%), Figitidae (37.55%), Diapriidae (7.42%), and Pteromalidae (5.46%). Larval parasitoids included seven braconid species, all Asobara and primarily Asobara mesocauda, and five figitid species, primarily Leptopilina japonica japonica. Pupal parasitoids were the diapriid Trichopria drosophilae and the pteromalid Pachycrepoideus vindemiae. Collections from wild fruits (2016) provided more interesting results. From the puparia of drosophilids collected, comprised of D. suzukii and Drosophila pulchrella, emerged 1354 parasitoids. The larval parasitoids Ganaspis brasiliensis and L. j. japonica were the prevalent species, reaching a fairly high percentage parasitism of fly puparia collected from berries of Rubus foliosus (22.35%), R. niveus (18.81%), Fragaria moupinensis (19.75%), and Sambucus adnata (63.46%). Ganaspis brasiliensis was the dominant species and was collected only from D. suzukii and D. pulchrella-infested fruits and never from banana-baited traps. Molecular analysis showed two G. brasiliensis lineages, which are discussed with respect to previous Japanese collections. Quarantine tests showed that G. brasiliensis developed from D. suzukii and two closely related hosts (Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila simulans) but did not develop from seven non-target drosophilid species. Our results suggest that G. brasiliensis is a promising classical biocontrol agent for release in invaded regions.

Biological control agents may play an important role in regulating Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae), particularly after the winter population bottleneck. Here we test the ability of the cosmopolitan pupal parasitoid, Trichopria drosophilae (Perkins) (Hymenoptera: Diapriidae), to reduce early season D. suzukii populations. We performed augmentative releases of the parasitoid during late March–April and carried out extensive monitoring activity on both parasitoid and fly populations. Results clearly showed a mitigation of the D. suzukii population in the treated areas, associated with a higher T. drosophilae parasitism. A 34% reduction in fruit infestation was observed in the unmanaged vegetation surrounding orchards. Accordingly, pest eclosion was significantly lower in the treated area compared to the untreated one. Our results suggest that augmentative release of T. drosophilae can improve pest control of D. suzukii in the unmanaged areas surrounding the crops, thus lowering the severity of pest outbreaks in the orchards.

The invasive pest Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae) causes serious economic damage in several soft fruit crops. This study aimed (1) to identify naturally occurring parasitoids and predators of this pest in North East Spain and (2) to get preliminary data on their potential as pest biological control agents. Two parasitoid species were found spontaneously parasitizing D. suzukii: Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae (Rondani) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) and Trichopria cf. drosophilae Perkins (Hymenoptera: Diapriidae). Both species were found repeatedly through the survey period and successfully reproduced in the laboratory on D. suzukii pupae. In addition, both species strongly reduced adult emergence of D. suzukii from infested fruits. Regarding predators, Orius laevigatus (Fieber) (Hemiptera: Antochoridae) were able to feed on D. suzukii eggs but not on larvae whereas the soil predator Labidura riparia Pallas (Dermaptera: Labiduridae) consumed D. suzukii larvae and pupae and was effective in reducing pest populations in laboratory tests.

Larvae of Anastrepha ludens and A. serpentina that developed in mango and sapodilla fruits, respectively, were exposed to Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and sequentially exposed as pupae to Coptera haywardi (Oglobin) (Hymenoptera: Diapriidae). Sequential exposure to both parasitoid species contributed to a decrease in fruit fly emergence due to higher levels of parasitism, which varied according to fruit type. In creole mango, D. longicaudata represented the highest percentage of parasitism. C. haywardi parasitism was greater in pupae from Ataulfo mangos and sapodilla, where the pulp size and volume may have acted as a refuge, allowing fly larvae to escape and leaving a greater number of unparasitised pupae available to C. haywardi. Similar results were obtained under field cage conditions, but the level of parasitism by C. haywardi was lower, suggesting that its effectiveness has some limitations under natural conditions. Our results suggest that both species can exert complementary parasitism, which represents an alternative worth to investigate under open field conditions.

The gregarious endoparasitoid Trichopria sp. (Hymenoptera: Diapriidae) is currently under evaluation for its potential to suppress the levels of parasitism in larvae of the silkworm Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) caused by the tachinid fly Exoristabombycis (Louis) (Diptera: Tachinidae) in the rearing houses of sericulture farmers in southern India. Parasitism by E. bombycis currently results in cocoon yield reductions of 10–20 %. Prior to the mass production and release of Trichopria sp., there is a need to understand the factors that affect progeny production and fitness. Within this framework, we have attempted to determine whether host age has an impact on the numbers of Trichopria sp. progeny produced and on the subsequent fitness of the adults of the wasp. Two day-old adult females of the parasitoid were allowed to parasitize day (D) 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 puparia of E.bombycis at a ratio of 1:4 (wasp:host). After eclosion of the parasitoid adults, data on the rate of parasitism, developmental period, brood allocation, progeny production, sex ratio, female progeny longevity and adult size were recorded. The reproductive performance of the adult progeny was also recorded by allowing them to parasitize three day-old E.bombycis puparia. Host age was seen to have an effect on several of the parameters recorded, such that while the most progeny were produced by the youngest (D1) hosts, larger wasps emerged from older E. bombycis puparia. It was, however, apparent that all but the oldest hosts (D9) examined were able to support adequate parasitoid development. Further, only relatively minor impacts on progeny fitness were observed between wasps deriving from hosts of different ages. However, the results strongly indicate that optimal production and parasitoid performance will be obtained by using young hosts of less than three days old.

A number of wasps in the family Diapriidae, subfamily Diapriinae (Proctotrupoidea), are parasitoids that specialize on ant larvae. These wasps are abundant and diverse in the Neotropics, but little is known about their biology. We studied parasitism rates by an array of diapriine wasps that attack the larvae of fungus-growing ants, Trachymyrmex cf. zeteki, in a single population (near Gamboa, Panama). Relatively little is known about the biology and natural history of these ants, so we also present data on colony size and nest architecture. We excavated 136 colonies in central Panama from June to September 2006, and 20 nests from July 2009. We reared six wasp morphotypes; two of them in the genus Mimopriella Masner and Garcia, one Oxypria Kieffer, two Szelenyiopria Fabritius and one Acanthopria Ashmead. The mean intensity of larval parasitism per ant colony was 33.9% (2006), and its prevalence across all ant populations was 27.2% (2006 and 2009). Parasitism rates were not positively correlated with host colony size. New World diapriine wasps are abundant and diverse, but the biology of most species is unknown. We provide the first description of the biology of diapriine wasps, Acanthopria spp. and Mimopriella sp., which attack the larvae of Cyphomyrmex fungus-growing ants. In Puerto Rico, the koinobiont parasitoids Acanthopria attack Cyphomyrmex minutus, while in Panama at least four morphospecies of Acanthopria and one of Mimopriella attack Cyphomyrmex rimosus. Of the total larvae per colony, 0-100% were parasitized, and 27-70% of the colonies per population were parasitized. Parasitism rate and colony size were negatively correlated for C. rimosus but not for C. minutus. Worker ants grasped at, bit, and in some cases, killed adult wasps that emerged in artificial nests or tried to enter natural nests. Parasitoid secondary sex ratios were female-biased for eclosing wasps, while field collections showed a male-biased sex ratio. Based on their abundance and success in attacking host ants, these minute wasps present excellent opportunities to explore how natural enemies impact ant colony demography and population biology.

We first discuss the diversity of fruit fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) parasitoids (Hymenoptera) of the Neotropics. Even though the emphasis is on Anastrepha parasitoids, we also review all the information available on parasitoids attacking flies in the genera Ceratitis, Rhagoletis, Rhagoletotrypeta, Toxotrypana and Zonosemata. We center our analysis in parasitoid guilds, parasitoid assemblage size and fly host profiles. We also discuss distribution patterns and the taxonomic status of all known Anastrepha parasitoids. We follow by providing a historical overview of biological control of pestiferous tephritids in Latin American and Florida (U.S.A.) and by analyzing the success or failure of classical and augmentative biological control programs implemented to date in these regions. We also discuss the lack of success of introductions of exotic fruit fly parasitoids in various Latin American countries. We finish by discussing the most pressing needs related to fruit fly biological control (classical, augmentative, and conservation modalities) in areas of the Neotropics where fruit fly populations severely restrict the development of commercial fruit growing. We also address the need for much more intensive research on the bioecology of native fruit fly parasitoids.
