Neural networks have recently been established as state-of-the-art in forecasting financial time series. However, many studies show how one architecture, the Long-Short Term Memory, is the most widespread in financial sectors due to its high performance over time series. Considering some stocks traded in financial markets and a crypto ticker, this paper tries to study the effectiveness of the Boltzmann entropy as a financial indicator to improve forecasting, comparing it with financial analysts’ most commonly used indicators. The results show how Boltzmann’s entropy, born from an Agent-Based Model, is an efficient indicator that can also be applied to stocks and cryptocurrencies alone and in combination with some classic indicators. This critical fact allows obtaining good results in prediction ability using Network architecture that is not excessively complex.

Financial bubbles represent a severe problem for investors. In particular, the cryptocurrency market has witnessed the bursting of different bubbles in the last decade, which in turn have had spillovers on all the markets and real economies of countries. These kinds of markets and their unique characteristics are of great interest to researchers. Generally, investors and financial operators study market trends to understand when bubbles might occur using technical analysis tools. Such tools, which have been historically used, resulted in being precious allies at the basis of more advanced systems. In this regard, different autonomous, adaptive and automated trading agents have been introduced in the literature to study several kinds of markets. Among these, we can distinguish between agents with Zero/Minimal Intelligence (ZI/MI) and Computational Intelligence (CI)-based agents. The first ones typically trade on the market without resorting to complex learning strategies; the second ones usually use (deep) reinforcement learning mechanisms. However, these trading agents have never been tested on the cryptocurrencies market and related financial bubbles, which are still mostly overlooked in the literature. It is unclear how these agents can make profits/losses before, during, and after a bubble to adjust their strategy and avoid critical situations. This paper compares a broad set of trading agents (between ZI/MI and CI ones) and evaluates them with well-known financial indicators (e.g., volatility, returns Sharpe ratio, drawdown, Sortino and Omega ratio). Among the experiment’s outcomes, ZI/MI agents were more explainable than CI ones. Based on the results obtained above, we introduce GGSMZ, a trading agent relying on a neuro-fuzzy mechanism. The neuro-fuzzy system is able to learn from the trades performed by the agents adopted in the previous stage. GGSMZ’s performances overcome those of other tested agents. We argue that GGSMZ could be used by investors as a decision support tool.

Nowadays, the information obtainable from the markets are potentially limitless. Economic theory has always supported the possible advantage obtainable from having more information than competitors, however quantifying the advantage that these can give has always been a problem. In particular, in this paper we study the amount of information obtainable from the markets taking into account only the time series of the prices, through the use of a specific Generative Adversarial Network. We consider two types of financial instruments traded on the market, stocks and cryptocurrencies: the first are traded in a market subject to opening and closing hours, whereas cryptocurrencies are traded in a 24/7 market. Our goal is to use this GAN to be able to “convert” the amount of information that the different instruments can have in discriminative and predictive power, useful to improve forecast. Finally, we demonstrate that by using the initial dataset with the 5 most important feature useds by traders, the prices of cryptocurrencies present higher discriminatory and predictive power than stocks, while by adding a feature the situation can be completely reversed.

In most cases, the valuation of the investments characterized by various stages with a high level of uncertainty is done through the compound real option valuation (ROV). This decision making support can consider various types of uncertainty that can affects these investment phases, such as that linked to technology. Specifically, within the category of uncertain investments there are the broadband opportunities that can be valued as real options in order to quantify the risks associated with the investment. However, since ROV theory has no definitive way to determine model parameters based on market information, we propose one that can adjust them dynamically. In this paper, to include this aspect in the project valuation, we have unified the ROV with the sentiment analysis, a natural language processing technique that allows us to quantify the polarity of expressions in natural language numerically. In particular, the inherent risks related to the different phases of the project can be extracted from the information present in the surrounding environment and published in newspapers. From there, we obtain a sentiment score which, through appropriate manipulations, manages to modify the evaluation of the success probabilities of each stage. Then, we embed these success probabilities in the ROV in order to provide a valuation methodology that includes the impact of information on the investment decision.

Kynurenine pathway of tryptophan metabolism is involved in the pathophysiology of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetes mellitus, mainly through the inflammation-induced activity of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), and few studies have investigated its potential link with proteinuria. Renin-angiotensin system inhibitors (RASis) are recommended in these patients to decrease proteinuria, slow CKD progression and reduce cardiovascular risk, but whether these drugs influence kynurenine levels in humans is unknown. We evaluated serum tryptophan and kynurenine in patients suffering from CKD with or without type 2 diabetes mellitus, their correlations with markers of reduced kidney function, and their relationship with RAS-inhibiting therapy. Of 72 adult patients enrolled, 55 were receiving RASis, whereas 17 were not. Tryptophan was assessed by HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography); kynurenine was measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit; IDO activity (%) was calculated with the formula (kynurenine/tryptophan) × 100. Kynurenine levels were significantly lower in the group under RASis compared to the untreated group (1.56 ± 0.79 vs 2.16 ± 1.51 µmol/l; P = 0.0378). In patients not receiving RASis, kynurenine was inversely related to estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (r = - 0.4862; P = 0.0478) and directly related to both proteinuria (ρ = 0.493; P = 0.0444) and albuminuria (ρ = 0.542; P = 0.0247). IDO activity was higher in patients with history of cardiovascular disease compared to patients with no such history, and it negatively correlated with eGFR (ρ = - 0.554; P = 0.0210) in the same group. These findings may contribute to explain the well-known beneficial effects of RAS inhibition in CKD population, especially considering that kynurenine is emerging as a potential new biomarker of CKD.

Background Metabolic acidosis is associated with accelerated progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Whether treatment of metabolic acidosis with sodium bicarbonate improves kidney and patient survival in CKD is unclear. Methods We conducted a randomized (ratio 1:1). open-label, controlled trial (NCT number: NCT01640119. www.clinicaltrials.gov) to determine the effect in patients with CKD stage 3–5 of treatment of metabolic acidosis with sodium bicarbonate (SB) on creatinine doubling (primary endpoint), all-cause mortality and time to renal replacement therapy compared to standard care (SC) over 36-months. Parametric, non-parametric tests and survival analyses were used to assess the effect of SB on these outcomes. Results A total of 376 and 364 individuals with mean (SD) age 67.8 (14.9) years, creatinine clearance 30 (12) ml/min, and serum bicarbonate 21.5 (2.4) mmol/l were enrolled in SB and SC, respectively. Mean (SD) follow-up was 29.6 (9.8) vs 30.3 (10.7) months in SC and SB. respectively. Background: Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic widely used in the treatment of infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria. The main limitation to its therapeutic effectiveness is the potential nephrotoxicity. Erythropoietin has a tissue protective effect widely demonstrated in the kidney. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the renoprotective effects of erythropoietin in a model of zebrafish (Danio rerio) after administration of gentamicin. Methods: Sixty adult zebrafish were subdivided into three groups: group A was treated with gentamicin; group B received gentamicin and, 24 h later, epoetin alpha; group C received drug diluent only. In order to analyze the renoprotective activity of erythropoietin, the expression of c-kit and ?-catenin was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Results: Generally, the zebrafish renal tubule regenerates 15 days after an injury. Conversely, 7 days after gentamicin administration, animals treated with erythropoietin (group B) showed a better renal injury repair as documented by: increased expression of ?-catenin, less degenerated tubules, greater number of centers of regeneration, positivity for c-kit only in immature-looking tubules and lymphohematopoietic cells. Conclusion: The expression of c-kit and ?-catenin suggests that erythropoietin may exert a role in regeneration reducing the extent of tubular damage from the outset after gentamicin administration.

Lung and kidney functions are intimately related in both health and disease. The regulation of acid-base equilibrium, modification of partial pressure of carbon dioxide and bicarbonate concentration, and the control of blood pressure and fluid homeostasis all closely depend on renal and pulmonary activities. These interactions begin in fetal age and are often responsible for the genesis and progression of diseases. In gestational age, urine is a fundamental component of the amniotic fluid, acting on pulmonary maturation and growth. Moreover, in the first trimester of pregnancy, kidney is the main source of proline, contributing to collagen synthesis and lung parenchyma maturation. Pathologically speaking, the kidneys could become damaged by mediators of inflammation or immuno-mediated factors related to a primary lung pathology or, on the contrary, it could be the renal disease that determines a consecutive pulmonary damage. Furthermore, non immunological mechanisms are frequently involved in renal and pulmonary diseases, as observed in chronic pathologies such as sleep apnea syndrome, pulmonary hypertension, progressive renal disease and hemodialysis. Kidney damage has also been related to mechanical ventilation. The aim of this review is to describe pulmonary-renal interactions and their related pathologies, underscoring the need for a close collaboration between intensivists, pneumologists and nephrologists.

Background Nutritional treatment has always represented a major feature of CKD management. Over the decades, the use of nutritional treatment in CKD patients has been marked by several goals. The first of these include the attainment of metabolic and fluid control together with the prevention and correction of signs, symptoms and complications of advanced CKD. The aim of this first stage is the prevention of malnutrition and a delay in the commencement of dialysis. Subsequently, nutritional manipulations have also been applied in association with other therapeutic interventions in an attempt to control several cardiovascular risk factors associated with CKD and to improve the patient's overall outcome. Over time and in reference to multiple aims, the modalities of nutritional treatment have been focused not only on protein intake but also on other nutrients. Discussion This paper describes the pathophysiological basis and rationale of nutritional treatment in CKD and also provides a report on extensive experience in the field of renal diets in Italy, with special attention given to approaches in clinical practice and management. Summary Italian nephrologists have a longstanding tradition in implementing low protein diets in the treatment of CKD patients, with the principle objective of alleviating uremic symptoms, improving nutritional status and also a possibility of slowing down the progression of CKD or delaying the start of dialysis. A renewed interest in this field is based on the aim of implementing a wider nutritional therapy other than only reducing the protein intake, paying careful attention to factors such as energy intake, the quality of proteins and phosphate and sodium intakes, making today’s low-protein diet program much more ambitious than previous. The motivation was the reduction in progression of renal insufficiency through reduction of proteinuria, a better control of blood pressure values and also through correction of metabolic acidosis. One major goal of the flexible and innovative Italian approach to the low-protein diet in CKD patients is the improvement of patient adherence, a crucial factor in the successful implementation of a low-protein diet program.
