Springs located at the historical sites of Wadi Araba (Eastern Desert of Egypt) and emerging from the escarpments of the Northern and Southern Galala Plateaus were investigated. A combination of methods, including hydrochemistry, stable and radioisotope composition, and structural analyses based on satellite data, provided information about the structure of the subsurface and the derived groundwater flow paths. Satellite images reveal karst features within the northern plateau, e.g. conical landforms. Karstic caves were documented along both escarpments. Chemical analysis of floodwater from Wadi Araba indicates higher concentrations of terrestrial salts compared to floodwaters from central and southern parts of the desert. δ18O and δ2H signatures in spring waters resemble those of floodwater and fall on the global meteoric water line, confirming their fast infiltration with minor influence of evaporation. The aquifer feeding the springs of the Northern Galala Plateau has low retention and the springs dry out quickly, even after heavy rainfall. Contrastingly,3H activities in springs emerging from the Southern Galala Plateau refer to much slower subsurface passage. With respect to3H content (3.8 TU) in recent flood waters, the spring water at Southern Galala Plateau contains about 40% recently recharged groundwater. However, its largest spring—the St. Antony spring—discharges water with a radiocarbon age of about 15,000 years. In combination with this spring’s constant and high discharge over a period of several months, that age estimate suggests a large reservoir with moderate to high retention.

Hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopes (δ2H and δ18O) in precipitation were analysed from June 2018 to May 2020 in Ningbo and were influenced by the subtropical monsoon climate in East China. The δ2H and δ18O values of precipitation in Ningbo varied from −90.0 to 6.0‰ and from −13.5 to −1.6‰, respectively. The local meteoric water line (LMWL) in Ningbo was obtained as δ2H = 9.27 δ18O + 35.95 and had a larger slope and intercept compared to the global meteoric water line (GMWL) because its water vapour sources were oceans. The more negative δ18O values and lower deuterium excess (D-excess) of precipitation in summer were due to water vapour sources from the East China Sea, the South Sea and the Western Pacific, which are controlled by the southeasterly monsoon. In contrast, the less negative δ18O and higher D-excess of precipitation in winter were influenced by water vapour sources from the North Asian continent and North China transported by the northwesterly monsoon. The precipitation amount effect was significant in Ningbo, especially in summer. The inverse temperature effect was appeared in Ningbo, except winter. These two effects may be caused mainly by the monsoon climate rather than by the secondary evaporation effect.

Heavy precipitation events are increasingly concerned because their significant contribution to annual precipitation in the Northwestern China, which might be related to invasion of summer monsoon moisture. It is interest whether or not the same is Jade Pass as being outside the control of the Asian summer monsoon. In this work, six heavy precipitation events were selected based on the 95 percentiles of the daily precipitation at the 12 weather stations around the Jade Pass from 1970–2000, with consideration of the influences of elevation. The event on June 19th, 2013 was chosen for a detailed examination due to the fact that the day has a large-scale precipitation as revealed by a gridded precipitation dataset over a large region. Using a Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) simulation with high spatiotemporal resolution and in situ isotopic tracing (δ18O, δD), under a large-scale heavy precipitation event, this study provides ambitious view at the synoptic scale. A dramatic decrease in the δ18O, δD and deuterium (d)-excess of precipitation, very high relative humidity (98%), and reduced air temperature indicate that the precipitation was a result of long-distance-transported monsoon vapor. In addition, the slope of the local water meteoric line (LWML) of the precipitation for this event was very close to that of the global meteoric water line (GWML), indicating the source of moisture was from the ocean. Meanwhile, the WRF simulation confirms that the precipitation at the Jade Pass was not caused by local convection, but by summer monsoon. Both WRF simulation and isotopic tracing support the view that the monsoon moisture could invade Jade Pass at the synoptic scale and impact on precipitation, which need be further investigated.

Evaluation of geogenic carbon fluxes between solid Earth and its atmosphere is essential to understand the global geological carbon cycle. Some of the key geogenic CO2 suppliers are the magmatic mantle and metamorphic degassing from active and quiescent volcanoes, fault zones, geothermal systems and CO2 rich groundwater. Indian Himalayan geothermal field hosts about 340 geothermal springs in natural as well as artesian condition that eject hot waters and volatiles with varied temperature and chemical composition. These sites provide an opportunity to analyse tectonically driven gas emissions and their impact on regional and global climate. Here we adopt a method for direct measurement of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC ≈ HCO3) concentration in the geothermal springs to estimate geogenic CO2 flux from an active region based on water discharge and area of geothermal system between the tectonic boundaries of the Main Central Thrust (MCT) and Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) of the Garhwal (Northwest) Himalaya. In the study area, geothermal spring water contain high δ13CDIC ratio (− 8.5‰ to + 4.0‰ VPDB), and among the major ions, bicarbonate (HCO3−) varies by an order of magnitude from 1697 to 21,553 μEq/L; chloride and sodium vary from 90 to 19,171 μEq/L and 436 to 23181 μEq/L. The elevated concentration of Cl− and Na+ in geothermal spring waters suggests affinity towards their deeper origin. These geothermal springs cover a large area of nearly 10,000 km2 of the Garhwal region showing a significant discharge of CO2 rich water with an estimated carbon dioxide degassing flux of ~7.2 × 106 mol/year to the atmosphere. Considering widespread occurrences of geothermal springs in tectonically active areas worldwide, the proposed direct measurement of DIC may be used as a reliable tool to estimate CO2 fluxes in different active orogenic settings within the Earth system. Results of stable isotopes of δ18O (VSMOW) and δD (VSMOW) in these geothermal spring waters follow the Global Meteoric Water Line (GMWL), suggesting affinity of their recharge through the meteoric origin.

Iran faces a water shortage crisis due to its long and frequent droughts and rapid population growth. In this study, moisture sources have been determined in 161 precipitation events from 12 stations using a Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model. Ten main moisture sources have been identified among which the Persian Gulf and the Persian Gulf with terrestrial sources are dominant. Backward trajectory outputs demonstrate that the precipitation events in the stations in the north of Iran originate mostly from the Caspian Sea and terrestrial sources. These precipitation events are mostly plotted on the Global Meteoric Water Line (GMWL) or between GMWL and Eastern Mediterranean Meteoric Water Line (EMMWL). Precipitation events in the middle and south of Iran stations receive moisture mostly from the Persian Gulf and terrestrial sources and they are mostly plotted on EMMWL. Linking backward trajectory models with precipitation events (δ 18O and δ 2H) determines the general isotope characteristics of each moisture source. Most of the precipitation events originate from high sea surface temperature (SST) water bodies and are plotted on EMMWL. However, precipitation events originating from lower SST water bodies are mostly plotted on GMWL and between GMWL and EMMWL. Plotting the average (δ 18O and δ 2H) in the studied stations on the meteoric water lines of the regions located on the dominant air masses trajectories toward Iran confirms the dominant moisture sources for the studied stations and also other obtained results by stable isotope technique and HYSPLIT model in this study.

To better understand the process of precipitation and water cycle, the composition of stable isotope in precipitation and its influences by different vapor sources in the eastern of Qilian Mountains were conducted from June 2013 to May 2014. The total of 100 precipitation samples were collected in Wushaoling national meteorological station located in the eastern of Qilian Mountains. The analysis indicates that the slope of Local Meteoric Water Line is lower than that of Global Meteoric Water Line. The average values of δ18O and δD in precipitation are higher in summer but lower in winter. Except for negative correlation with relative humidity, the stable isotope values in precipitation are positive correlations with temperature, precipitation and water vapor pressure. Influenced by water vapor source, the values of d-excess are lower for the Westerly wind and the South Asia Monsoon on July and the Westerly wind and the East Asia Monsoon on August, but they are higher for the Westerly wind on other months, that they are also influenced by the weather conditions in rainfall process. The variation of stable isotope in precipitation exhibited significant temperature effect, and there is also some precipitation amount effect in spring and summer.

A hydrogeochemical and isotopic study was conducted on the subterranean karst stream, namely the Guancun subterranean stream (GSS). The hydrogeochemical processes of the GSS were controlled through calcite dissolution and precipitation and were driven by the concentration of CO2, which controlled changes in the pH and of PCO2 in the water. The δ18O and δD values of the GSS were within the global meteoric water line and the local meteoric water line, thereby indicating that the water of the GSS comes from precipitation. Certain abnormal δ18O and δD values suggest the effect of evaporation on the GSS given its use in a particular irrigation system, wherein the GSS in transformed into a surface stream and flows for a relatively long time on the surface during the wet season. The δ13CDIC values of the GSS range from −13.5 to −11.3‰ in the dry season and from −13.9 to −9.5‰ in the wet season, thereby indicating that the GSS belongs to a semi-open system. The δ13CDIC values in the GSS were formed by the δ13CDIC values of the soil CO2 and carbonate dissolution at different proportions. According to the simplified mass balance formula, the contributions of carbonate dissolution to the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) of the GSS were calculated to be 50.2–58.3% and 48.7–64.7% in the dry and wet seasons, respectively, thereby indicating a less than 50% carbonate dissolution contribution during the formation of DIC in karst groundwater. Moreover, sulfuric acid and nitric acid were observed to participate in karst processes.

In this study, the characteristics of δ2H and δ18O in rainwater, groundwater and spring water have been used to understand the groundwater recharge dynamics in the Amedzofe area (one of the highest human habitation in Ghana). The local Meteoric Water Line (LMWL) using all the rainfall events gave an equation with the best fit line of δ2H = 7.32 δ18O + 8.20 (n = 113; r 2 = 0.94). Heavier rainfall events greater than 10, 20 and 30 mm further orient the slope closer to the Global Meteoric Water Line (GMWL). The data showed that the isotopic compositions of the rainwater in the area are mainly influenced by the rainfall amount with temperature having minimal effect. All the spring water and most of the groundwater plot around the GMWL, implying they are of meteoric origin. The Chloride Mass Balance (CMB) and δ18O shift methods suggest annual mean recharge rate of 160.43 and 125.79 mm/year representing 10.70 and 8.39% of annual rainfall, respectively. The estimated mean recharge rate for the spring was 317.51 mm/year and 300.68 mm/year representing 26.46 and 25.06% of annual rainfall for CMB and δ18O shift methods, respectively. Rainfall stable isotopes from Kpando and Amedzofe gave an altitude effect of 0.17/100 m and altitude of recharge of the springs from +724.00 to +788.61 m amsl. The stable isotopes data identified two distinct moisture sources, isotopically enriched local moisture (evaporated surface water bodies and evapo-transpiration water vapour flux from vegetation) and isotopically depleted moisture source from the Atlantic Ocean. The results further showed that significant groundwater recharge in the study area takes place in the months of March, June and August.

Kırşehir geothermal area is located in Central Anatolia and is controlled mainly by NW–SE and NE–SW faults belonging to Seyfe Fault Zone. This paper examines the geochemistry, particularly trace elements and isotopes of geothermal fluids in relation to regional tectonics and discusses the geothermal potential of the Kırşehir. The cold and thermal fluids forming the Kırşehir sources are Ca–Mg–HCO 3 and Ca–Na–HCO 3 –Cl, respectively. According to Giggenbach diagram, the cold waters are located in the partially equilibrated water region whilst other samples are located in the immature water region. Besides, the semi-logarithmic Schoeller diagram shows that cold and hot waters come from different aquifers because cold and thermal fluids exhibit similar ion concentrations in themselves. Cation and SiO 2 geothermometers show that the reservoir rock temperatures range from 58 to 98 °C. According to ? 18 O and ? 2 H values, the thermal fluids in the study area are located between the Mediterranean meteoric water line and global meteoric water line; this suggests that the geothermal sources are of meteoric origin and the colder aquifers are recharged by precipitation at lower attitudes, whereas the geothermal reservoir is recharged by precipitation at higher altitudes and from inland environments. The Rare Earth Elements and Yttrium results show that the waters have remarkable negative Cerium (Ce), Europium (Eu) and Yttrium (Y) anomalies. The negative Ce anomaly indicates that the colder aquifers of Kırşehir are close to oxygen-rich surface waters and thermal fluids interact with granites. The Eu anomalies in groundwater are controlled by the preferential mobilization of Eu 2+ during water–rock interaction compared to Eu 3+ and negative Eu anomalies, which show that geothermal fluids have leached from granites. Y/Ho values between 25 and 33 of the thermal fluids at Kırşehir result from the active contribution of fluorine during mobilization of REE as either fluoride or fluorocarbonate ligand complexes, causing Y to act as a heavy pseudolanthanide. © 2019, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

Stable hydrogen and oxygen in different water bodies were investigated to understand the isotopic characteristics in the Lhasa River Basin. A total of 73 water samples were collected from the river, well and spring in this study. The stable isotopic compositions of different water bodies are influenced by evaporation, and the slope of the local meteoric water line deviates slightly from that of the global meteoric water line. The slopes of the surface water, groundwater and spring water lines are smaller than that of the global meteoric water line. The surface water originates from not only atmospheric precipitation but also glacial/snow meltwater, especially in the Dang River, the upper reaches of the Lhasa River and the Duilong River. The groundwater is derived from meteoric water, and there are certain differences between the source and the cyclic process of groundwater at different locations and depths. Spring water is conjunctively recharged by groundwater, surface water and precipitation, but groundwater is the main source of spring water. The altitude effect of hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in river water is not obvious in the whole basin, but it is noticeable in some areas due to the effect of climate and temperature. Surface water, groundwater and spring water have a relationship of reciprocal recharge, and the miscibility of groundwater is the strongest, with recharge from multiple water sources.

Isotopic signatures of δD-H2O, δ18O-H2O, δ15N-NO3−, δ18O-NO3− and δ15NFertilizer isotopes were used in order to evaluate the impact of agricultural inputs (fertilizers and calcium nitrate) and sewage effluents on the water of tributaries of the Faxinal Dam, which supply the city of Caxias do Sul in Southern Brazil. δ2H and δ18O were identified by spectroscopy laser absorption tunable diode-type cavity ring-down spectroscopy, while the isotopic ratios of 15N and 18O in nitrate were determined by isotopic ratio mass spectrometry, applying the chemical denitrification method. The results showed that most of the analyzed samples are compatible with the Global Meteoric Water Line, Local Meteoric Water Line and Carlos Barbosa Wells and Fountains Tendency Line, except for the Fx-07 sample that presented greater similarity to δ18O values for groundwater. The isotopic signatures of δ15N-NO3− versus δ18O-NO3−, in the great majority of the samples, pointed out the influence and the contribution of the fertilizers. In a monitored affluent, the results show the impact of the direct discharge of domestic sewage, while in the sewage treatment plant there is clear evidence of denitrification. This study demonstrated that isotope application of δ15N-NO3− and δ18O-NO3− is efficient tools for identification of N-NO3− of synthetic fertilizers and domestic sewage.

The environmental isotopes such as deuterium and oxygen-18 and the deuterium excess values have been used to assess groundwater recharge sources and their dynamics in Khan Younis City in the Gaza Strip in Palestine. Three isotopic lines for the relationship between δ2H and δ18O were used in the assessment. These lines are the global meteoric water line, the local meteoric water line and the groundwater evaporation line. The δ2H, δ18O and D-excess values indicate that deuterium and oxygen-18 isotopes originated in the groundwater from groundwater mixing with rainfall and other water sources; the groundwater in the area recharged from rainfall from a distant source that came from the Mediterranean Sea and from other sources such as wastewater, irrigation return flow and saline water.

It is important to have qualitative as well as quantitative understanding of the hydraulic exchange between lake and groundwater for effective water resource management. Dal, a famous urban fresh water lake, plays a fundamental role in social, cultural and economic dynamics of the Kashmir Valley. In this paper geochemical, isotopic and hydrological mass balance approaches are used to constrain the lake water–groundwater interaction of Dal Lake and to identify the sources of lake water. Water samples of precipitation (n = 27), lake water (n = 18) and groundwater (n = 32) were collected across the lake and its catchment for the analysis of δ18O and δ2H. A total of 444 lake water samples and 440 groundwater samples (springs, tube wells and dug wells) were collected for the analysis of Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3 −, SO4 2−, Cl−, NO3 −, Na+ and K+. Water table and lake water level were monitored at 40 observation locations in the catchment. Water table map including pH and EC values corroborate and verify the gaining nature of the Dal Lake. Stable isotopes of lake water in Boddal and Gagribal basins showed more deviation from the global meteoric water line than Hazratbal and Nigeen basins, indicating the evaporation of lake water. The isotopic and geochemical mass balance suggested that groundwater contributes a significant proportion (23–40%) to Dal Lake. The estimated average groundwater contribution to Dal Lake ranged from 31.2 × 103 to 674 × 103 m3 day−1 with an average of 276 × 103 m3 day−1. The study will be useful to delineate the possible sources of nutrients and pollutants entering the lake and for the management of lake water resources for sustainable development.

The stable isotopic composition of meteoric precipitation is an important component of global and regional water cycle research. Stable isotope data can help reconstruct paleoclimate related to ice cores, lake sediments, and stalagmites. We investigated the daily variation in isotopic composition of meteoric precipitation from 2008 to 2012 in the Guilin region of China. δ18O of meteoric precipitation ranged from −14.21 to +2.38 ‰, with an average value of −5.78 ‰ (Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water; VSMOW). Meteoric precipitation in the summer half-year (May through October) increased, with a relatively low δ18O value of −8.04 ‰ (VSMOW; average of 261 groups) and −56.03 ‰ (VSMOW) of average δD, accounting for 67.6 % of the total annual meteoric precipitation. Meteoric precipitation in the winter half-year (November through April) decreased, with a relatively high δ18O value of −2.89 ‰ (average of 210 groups) and −9.23 ‰ of average δD, accounting for 32.4 % of total meteoric precipitation. The local meteoric water line (LMWL) equation in Guilin area has local climate characteristics. By combining environmental isotope data of precipitation using a backwards trajectory, water vapor sources of the meteoric precipitation in Guilin area are inferred and traced. Our results show that the isotopic composition of meteoric water vapor sources in Guilin area are related to monsoon type, source of precipitation cloud masses, and precipitation properties. The isotopic composition of meteoric precipitation in the summer half-year (May through October) was mainly affected by the summer monsoon or summer typhoons, namely controlled by water vapor source from the Bay of Bengal and the South China sea, and the second the West Pacific, and the δ18O value of meteoric precipitation was strongly negative. There was a significant negative correlation between the δ18O values of meteoric precipitation and the amount of precipitation and temperature in the summer half-year. The amount effect of the meteoric precipitation often concealed the temperature effect. The isotopic composition of meteoric precipitation in the winter season or winter half-year was affected by the water vapor source of the warm moist air masses from the West Pacific and continental cold air masses from the Siberia–Mongolia/winter monsoon or local evaporation vapor circulation, and the δ18O value of meteoric precipitation was relatively positive, and indicated that the water vapor of meteoric precipitation along the water vapor trajectory was affected by the evaporation as well as the local water vapor evaporation. The research results have showed that different sources of water vapor has a significant influence on the δ18O variation of meteoric precipitation, therefore, analysis of δ18O in the meteoric precipitation, especially its seasonal variation characteristics of analysis, can conversely reveal the water vapor sources of local meteoric precipitation.

Based on the precipitation samples obtained at Lanzhou City (36°06′N, 103°44′E, 1,548 m a.s.l.) in western China and its surrounding counties (Yongdeng, Gaolan, and Yuzhong) from April 2011 to February 2013, the characteristics of stable isotopes in precipitation and the correlations between δ 18O and meteorological factors were analyzed. The LMWL (local meteoric water line) of Lanzhou City and its surrounding areas was calculated, and the order of LMWL slopes in the four stations is Yuzhong (7.70) > Lanzhou (7.57) > Yongdeng (7.24) > Gaolan (6.80). Both the slope and intercept of the LMWLs for each station are less than those of the global meteoric water line. There is a weakly positive correlation between δ 18O and air temperature, and the correlation between δ 18O and precipitation amount is weakly negative. Evidenced from the slope and intercept of LMWL and the relationship between δ 18O and relative humidity, there is secondary evaporation when the precipitation falls from clouds to the ground.

Madeira is a volcanic island whose economy is highly dependent on groundwater. Previous studies suggest that, besides precipitation, cloud water interception contributes to groundwater recharge. As such, the isotopic characterization of the sources of recharge is useful for the hydrogeological framework of the island. The δ 18O and δ 2H content of rain and cloud water was analyzed during three campaigns. Rain plots over a local meteoric water line (LMWL) whose equation is δ 2H = 7.92 δ 18O + 10.49 (R 2 = 0.97, n = 43). The volume-weighted average meteoric line (WLMWL) is given by δ 2H = 7.97 δ 18O + 10.57 (R 2 = 0.98, n = 20). Both are similar to the global meteoric water line which indicates, along with the d-excess values (10.8 and 11 ‰ for the LMWL and WLMWL, respectively), that rain originates, essentially in the Atlantic. Seasonal variations were also observed and rain in Campaign II was isotopically enriched and had a higher d-excess (δ 18Omean −3.63 ‰; δ 2Hmean −16.3 ‰; d-excess 12.7 ‰), than rain in Campaign III (δ 18Omean −7.01 ‰; δ 2Hmean −46.5 ‰; d-excess 9.5 ‰). Campaign I stood in between. These variations were probably the result of differences in temperature, water vapor source areas and rain forming processes. Rain was found to become increasingly depleted with altitude (δ 18O), at a rate of −0.15 ‰/100 m and −0.11 ‰/100 m in the windward and leeward sides, respectively. Cloud water was always isotopically enriched when compared with rain at the same altitude. This was related to constant water vapor replenishment of orographic clouds, to the fact that it usually represents an early stage condensation from air moisture and to the smaller size of cloud water droplets when compared to rain droplets. These results will be useful to refine Madeira’s hydrogeological conceptual model. Future extended sampling during more years, with smaller sampling periods and single rainfall events should be useful to support the conclusions of this study.

In the present study, the stable isotope compositions of water samples collected from Sana’a basin were investigated. The obtained data indicate that the recharge from direct infiltration of precipitation is divided into two groups: groundwater recharged from evaporated meteoric origin; and water that was barely affected by evaporation before recharge. The δ-values (δ18O and δ2H) of the water samples collected from the alluvium and sandstone aquifer plot are close to the Global Meteoric Water Line and Sana’a Meteoric Water Line (SMWL) indicating a recharge from non-evaporated meteoric water. While the samples collected from the volcanic and limestone aquifer plot below are both meteoric water lines, which indicate an evaporation process took place before recharge. The water samples collected from volcanic and sandstone aquifers are more depleted in their heavy isotopes δ18O and δ2H than the rainwater falls in the region. This indicates old groundwater occurrences within both aquifers and non-modern recharges, from direct infiltration occurred in the last few decades. However, a small contribution of modern groundwater could be observed in the alluvium and limestone aquifers. The δ18O and δ2H of the rainwater samples vary in a wide range; δ18O ranges between −8.02 and +4.50 ‰, while δ2H varies from −53.60 to + 14.90 ‰ with an average of−0.21 and +7.02 ‰, respectively. The final dataset of 52 rainwater samples was used to construct the so-called SMWL which defined by the equation δ2H = 7.4*δ18O + 8.6 ‰.

We present a case study of physical and chemical indicators and isotope characteristics of Lake Nuoertu, one of the largest and deepest lakes of the Badain Jaran Desert. We analyze the concentrations of eight ions, total dissolved solids, and stable isotope composition of the lake and groundwater, as well as radioactive isotope tritium concentration in groundwater. The results show that annual and seasonal variations of the physical and chemical characteristics of Lake Nuoertu water are significantly greater than those of groundwater. The lake is uniformly mixed in the horizontal and vertical directions, and the hydrochemical types of the lake at different depths are consistent for Na–Cl–CO3–(SO4). Stable isotope composition of the lake and groundwater at Nuoertu is distributed along the local evaporation line (EL) slope, which is less than the slope of the global meteoric water line. The comparatively small slope shows the characteristic strong evaporation in the study area. Lake water isotopes are mostly in the upper right corner of the EL, whereas groundwater is mostly in the lower left corner. The main recharge source of Nuoertu lake water is groundwater, in combination with lake water and groundwater level change. The age of tufa springs around Nuoertu is about 75–80 a, which shows that the initial recharge source of the lake is a mix between modern and 1952 or older; however, further research is required.

Hydrochemical and stable isotopes (18O and 2H) analyses of groundwater samples were employed to establish the origin of major dissolved ions in groundwater within the Lower Pra Basin. Results showed that, the major processes responsible for chemical evolution of groundwater include: silicate (SiO4)4− dissolutions, ion exchange reactions, sea aerosol spray and pyrite (FeS2) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS) oxidations. The groundwater is strongly acidic to neutral, with pH generally range from 3.5 to 7.0 pH units and mean 5.9 (±0.5). Approximately 89 % of boreholes had pH values outside the World Heath Organization (WHO, Guidelines for drinking water quality, 2004) guideline value for drinking water due principally to natural biogeochemical processes and therefore, not suitable for potable purposes. Electrical conductivity (EC) range from 57.6 to 1,201 μS/cm with mean 279.3 (±198.8) μS/cm. Total dissolved solids (TDS) range from 32 to 661 mg/L with mean 151.7 (±106.8) mg/L, with 98.6 % of groundwater as fresh (TDS Ca2+> Mg2+ > K+ and HCO3 − > Cl− > SO4 2−, respectively. A plot of ∂18O ‰ against 2H ‰ showed that, ground and surface waters clustered on or closely along the Global Meteoric Water Line, suggesting that, the waters emanated principally from meteoric source with evaporation playing an insignificant role on the infiltrating water.

Zhangye Basin, in arid northwestern China, has recently been repeatedly flooded by rising groundwater. Isotope signatures of sampled waters gained insight into the recharge source of the groundwater. The summer Heihe River water and most of the spring water in Zhangye and Yongchang basins plotted above the global meteoric water line (GMWL) on the δ18O-δD plot. The spring water had R/Ra ratio >1, low TDS and high tritium, which indicates origin from Qilian Mountain glacier meltwater. The groundwater of Qilian Mountains was transported to the Hexi Corridor (in which Zhangye Basin is located) through underground fault zones. Additionally, some of the groundwater in the alluvial plain, and all spring water surrounding Zhangye Basin, plotted below the GMWL on the δ18O-δD plot along an evaporation line, and had R/Ra ratio

The coal seams in the Permian Taiyuan Formation and the Carboniferous Shanxi Formation are the primary reservoirs for the coalbed methane (CBM) in the Hancheng region in the Ordos Basin. In this paper, the origin and evolution of waters associated with CBM production were studied on the basis of water chemistry and isotopes including the chloride and iodine compositions, oxygen and hydrogen stable isotopes, and radioactive isotope ratio of 129I/127I. The ratio of 129I/127I of water was determined by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The result shows that the formation water is of NaHCO3 and NaCl types with the total dissolved solids (TDS) varying from 1532.29 mg/L to 7061.12 mg/L. The values of 129I and I/Cl ratio indicate that the formation waters were diluted by meteoric water. The 129I/127I ratios range from 6.6×10−13 to 1459.5×10−13. The 129I/127I ratios for most of the samples are between the 129I/127I initial value and that of recent anthropogenic water. This age of the formation water samples, obtained through the 129I decay curve method, ranges from 0 Ma to 18.5 Ma, suggesting that the waters from the Taiyuan Formation and the Shanxi Formation are very young. Two different origins of water are identified in the Hancheng region. One group is dominated by pre-anthropogenic meteoric water, and is characterized by 129I/127I ratios lower than the initial value of 15×10−13 and δD, δ 18O values of waters below the Global Meteoric Water Line. The other group is characterized by 129I/127I ratios in excess of 15×10−13, which has undergone variable degrees of dilution by recent anthropogenic water.

Altitude encompasses broad environmental gradients that influence the isotopic composition of lake water. We selected 55 lakes in the Eastern Alps along an altitudinal gradient [214–2,532 m above sea level (a.s.l.)] to model the isotopic signal of surface water dependent on intrinsic (lake geomorphometry) and extrinsic (air temperature, precipitation) factors. Ordinary and generalised least squared regression were used for statistical analysis. The isotope signal of lake water was lower in spring than in summer and decreased with altitude (−0.21 δ18O ‰/100 m; −1.5 δ2H ‰/100 m). This pattern largely depended on temperature and a pseudo-latitude effect. The isotopic signal in monthly precipitation (12 stations; altitudinal gradient 90–2,730 m a.s.l.) generally showed the expected pattern of less enriched values with altitude; however, unusual values were related to weather anomalies. The local meteoric water line was similar to the global meteoric water line as shown by overlapping confidence intervals. By discriminating different elevational bands, we could show that high elevation lakes (>1,500 m a.s.l.) experience different patterns of evaporation with respect to low elevation lakes (

Hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope in water bodies is a widely used tracer in hydrological process studies. In order to provide a basis for stable isotopic characteristics in different water bodies at the high mountainous area of northwestern Tibetan Plateau, samples for river water, groundwater, soil water, and plant water were collected from 10 sites in the Qilian Mountains during July and August 2015, and then analyzed for δ18O and δD, respectively. Results indicated that the stable isotope values of soil water were mostly plotted below the global meteoric water line (GMWL), which suggested that evaporation made heavy isotope in soil water enriched. The stable isotope values of soil water were quite different in the top soil layer, but tended to be uniform in the deep soil layer. Furthermore, the stable isotope difference of plant water is related to climatic conditions, water isotopes utilized by plant, plant species, growing season, and so on. Additionally, the variation of δ18O values for river water and groundwater relatively coincided with each other, and this showed the recharge sources of above two water bodies may be consistent. The stable isotope values of river water and groundwater were mainly plotted on the upper left of GMWL, and the lower level of isotopic fractionation due to weak evaporation may accountable for this.

Interaction between surface water represented by the Euphrates River, natural springs, and Sawa Lake with groundwater (11 wells) in southern Iraq was investigated in this study. Water samples were collected for hydrochemistry and stable isotope (2H and 18O) analysis. Sampling of water from determined stations (10 stations along the Euphrates, 3 springs, and Sawa Lake) were carried out during two stages; the first was in October 2013(dry season) and the second one was in March 2014 (wet season). The aim of the research is to assess the interaction of groundwater–surface water, which includes Al-Atshan River (branch of the Euphrates River), Sawa Lake, and the groundwater in the study area by using hydrochemistry and stable isotope techniques. The results indicate that surface waters have a different type of water from that of groundwater. In δ 2H and δ 18O diagrams, all groundwater, springs, and Sawa Lake waters are plotted below the Global Meteoric Water Line (GMWL) and the local meteoric water line (LMWL) indicating the influence of evaporation processes and seasonal variation. The LMWL deviates by a d-excess about +13.71 toward the East Mediterranean meteoric water line (EMWL) indicating that the origin of the vapor source is the Mediterranean Sea. The river water has different isotopic compositions from that of groundwater, springs, and Sawa Lake. The final conclusion is that there is no clear influence of the groundwater on the river water while there is an intermixing between the groundwater in the different locations in the study area.

This study used multivariate analysis and geochemical modeling to appreciate the trace element evolution in North Rukuru–Songwe alluvial aquifer of northern Malawi. From the isotopic studies, the δ2H/δ18O ratios revealed that groundwater is of meteoric origin through vertical recharge and mixing processes. The isotopic depletion along the west–east transect is due to mixing and fractionation processes. Generally, the d-excess value approximated the y-intercept of global meteoric water line of 10, which ruled out the influence of secondary evaporative processes on isotopic variation. Hierarchical cluster analysis identified four distinct clusters (C1, C2, C3 and C4) in the study area. Among these four clusters, it was observed that C1 had relatively high median concentrations of Fe (716.7 µg/L), Cr (0.85 µg/L), Pb (7.90 µg/L) and Sb (3.80 µg/L), while C2 was characterized by high levels of Cu (3.20 µg/L). Cluster 3 was comparably defined by high median levels of F (1.00 mg/L) and Mn (338 µg/L), while C4 revealed high median concentrations of As (8.70 µg/L), Ba (635 µg/L), Li (22.2 µg/L), Ni (2.80 µg/L), Se (6.20 µg/L) and Sr (677 µg/L). Clusters C1 and C4 described a flow path along the North Rukuru River, which is characterized by higher levels of evaporites as shown by higher concentrations of Na, K, Cl and SO4. It was also observed that this path was defined by high levels of HCO3 and total hardness. The principal component analysis suggests that carbonate dissolution and silicate weathering are the main mineralization control mechanisms. Furthermore, it is revealed that samples in the west had higher factor scores for As, Ba, Li, Ni, Se and Sr (with higher TDS), while the eastern is characteristic of higher heavy metals (Fe and Pb). Geochemical modeling using PHREEQC showed that surface complexation reactions significantly impact trace elements of higher redox state. In addition, inverse modeling confirms the significance of carbonate dissolution, silicate weathering and cation exchange processes along the North Rukuru River flow path.

This study evaluates the source and evolution of groundwater in parts of the Nabogo catchment of the White Volta Basin in Ghana. Porewater δ18O and δ2H signatures of vadose zone material were used together with the isotope signatures of rainwater, groundwater, and surface water in the area to suggest an evolutionary model and the mode of fluid fluxes through the unsaturated zone material in the area. This study finds that the local precipitation in the study area presents a relatively isotopically heavier signature compared to the average signature of global meteoric water. This is because the local meteoric water line (LMWL) has shallower slope, intercept, and average deuterium excess values compared to the global meteoric water line (GMWL). On the other hand, the local groundwater in the area presents relatively enriched isotopic signatures. Stable isotope profiles suggest piston flow as the main mechanism of vertical water movement in the vadose zone, indicating that direct groundwater recharge from local precipitation is principally based on this mechanism of transport. There is a progressive decline in the deuterium excess data of porewater vertically down the soil profile. This observation is consistent with an evolutionary pattern caused by fractionation processes attending evaporation of infiltrating water. Mineral-weathering processes have not been noted to have an effect on the isotopic signature of groundwater in the area. However, there appears to be a significant impact of evaporation on the total dissolved solid content of surface water in the area. In the case of groundwater, field-measured electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDSs), and pH are, respectively, in the ranges of 30–2407 μS/cm, 15–1196 mg/L, and 5.35–8.36. The EC, TDS, and pH are, respectively, in the ranges of 30–139 μS/cm, 15–70 mg/L, and 6.52–8.66 in surface water in the area.

Groundwater plays a dominant role in arid regions; it is among the most available water resources in Tunisia. Located in northwestern Tunisia, Oum Ali-Thelepte is a deep Miocene sedimentary aquifer, where groundwater is the most important source of water supply. The aim of the study is to investigate the hydrochemical processes leading to mineralization and to assess water quality with respect to agriculture and drinking for a better management of groundwater resources. To achieve such objectives, water analysis was carried out on 16 groundwater samples collected during January-February 2014. Stable isotopes and 26 hydrochemical parameters were examined. The interpretation of these analytical data showed that the concentrations of major and trace elements were within the permissible level for human use. The distribution of mineral processes in this aquifer was identified using conventional classification techniques, suggesting that the water facies gradually changes from Ca-HCO3 to Mg-SO4 type and are controlled by water-rock interaction. These results were endorsed using multivariate statistical methods such as principal component analysis and cluster analysis. The sustainability of groundwater for drinking and irrigation was assessed based on the water quality index (WQI) and on Wilcox and Richards's diagrams. This aquifer has been classified as "excellent water" serving good irrigation in the area. As for the stable isotope, the measurements showed that groundwater samples lay between global meteoric water line (GMWL) and LMWL; hence, this arrangement signifies that the recharge of the Oum Ali-Thelepte aquifer is ensured by rainwater infiltration through mountains in the border of the aquifer without evaporation effects.

The isotopic characteristics of hydrogen and oxygen of various water bodies in the Yinchuan plain were investigated. A total of 131 water samples were collected and another 99 water samples collected by other scholars and the International Atomic Energy Agency were referred to in the study. The stable isotopic compositions of precipitation and lake waters are influenced by dry climate and strong evaporation of the area, and the slope of local meteoric water line and lake water line are smaller than that of global meteoric water line. The isotopic compositions of the Yellow River water are significantly lower than the weighted averages of local atmospheric precipitation and are controlled by the runoff of upstream areas. The isotopes of phreatic water suggest that the single phreatic water is predominantly recharged by the bedrock fissure water of Helan Mountain, while the phreatic water in multilayer structure area is recharged by multiple sources. The confined waters in the area may be recharged under cooler climate conditions than the present, which makes the heavy isotopes depleted. The 3H contents of various water bodies are in the following order: the Yellow River water > multilayer phreatic water > single phreatic water > lake water > drainage ditch water > upper confined water > lower confined water. This is in accordance with the recharge, discharge and circulation conditions of the specific water bodies. The isotope compositions of waters in the Yinchuan plain are mainly affected by external water recharge rather than local precipitation. This study is meaningful and helpful in understanding the groundwater flow systems and water cycle in the area.

This paper mainly analyzed the isotopic effect of precipitation in the Yarlung Zangbo River. On the whole, the isotopic compositions of most water samples fall on the upper right of the global meteoric water line. According to δD and δ18O data of the samples, the precipitation equation is figured out as δD=8 δ18O+10, showing that they are derived from precipitation but have experienced intensive evaporation. With obvious region-continental effect (a continuous depletion in heavy isotopes in water bodies occurs with increasing distance from the coast), the water presents a reducing trend of δD and δ18O westwards and southwards. Altitudinal effect is evident here, occurring in both trunk stream and main branches of the Yarlung Zangbo River. The distribution of water isotopic compositions is concerned with the movement of precipitation clouds from the Bay of Bengal and the Nujiang River and is affected by the topographic and climatic conditions of the Tibetan Plateau.

We carried out simultaneous measurements of drop size distribution (DSD) and stable oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions (δ18O and δD) of rain at the National Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NARL), Gadanki (13.5°N, 79.2°E), southern India, during September–October 2006, with the aim of understanding microphysical processes leading to rain formation. The MST radar at NARL was operated continuously during rain events, while rain samples were collected at very short time intervals ( 0.2‰ and >2‰) in their δ18O and δD. The slope of the local meteoric water line (δD–δ18O line), was 8.07 ± 0.47, similar to that of global meteoric water line, confirming that the precipitation occurred under isotopic equilibrium, and was unaffected by some anomalous process; further, the evaporation of rain drops at the cloud base was insignificant. Whenever the isotopic variations were larger during a rain event (>2‰) there was a significant negative correlation between the δ18O and DSD. The possible explanation is that larger drops are mostly associated with convective rather than stratiform rain, and 18O (and D) depletion in convective rain is relatively more. Bin-resolved microphysical models incorporating water isotopologues could benefit by considering drop size spectra, which could improve the match with stable isotope observations of precipitation.

Stable isotopes (δ18O and δD) are useful tracers for investigating hydrologic and climatic variability on a variety of temporal and spatial scales. Since the early isotopic studies on mountainous glaciers in the late 1960s, a great deal of information has been generated on the isotopic composition of rainfall, snow, ice, surface waters, and lake carbonate sediments across the Tibetan Plateau. However, measurements of δ18O and δD values of lake water are scarce. Here we present a new dataset of δ18O and δD values of lake waters collected from 27 lakes across the plateau during a reconnaissance survey in summer 2009. δ18O and δD values of lake water range from −19.9 to 6.6‰ and from −153 to −16‰, respectively. The average values of δ18O and δD are −6.4 and −72‰, considerably greater than those of precipitation observed in this region. The derived Tibetan lake water line, δD = 5.2δ18O − 38.9, is significantly different from the global meteoric water line. Most of the lakes, including some freshwater lakes, contain water with negative values of d-excess (d). There is a negative correlation between d and total dissolved solids (TDS). Each of these findings indicates that evaporation-induced isotopic enrichment prevails in Tibetan lakes. Moreover, we develop an isotope modeling scheme to calculate E/P ratios for Tibetan lakes, using a combination of existing isotopic fractionation equations and the Rayleigh distillation model. We use the intersection of the local evaporation line and GMWL as a first approximation of δ18O and δD values of lake water inputs to infer an E/P ratio for each lake. Our modeling calculations reveal that although variable from lake to lake, the water budget across the plateau is positive, with an average E/P of 0.52. This is in good agreement with other observational and model data that show varying degrees of increases in lake size from satellite imagery and significant decreases in lake salinity in many lakes on the plateau over the last several decades. Together with the new isotopic dataset, the proposed modeling framework can be used to examine and quantify past changes in a lake’s hydrologic balance from the isotopic record of downcore carbonate sediments in the region.

We examine the origin of acid mine drainage (AMD) that forms within coal refuse (gob) piles at the Green Valley and Friar Tuck sites in Indiana, using microbiology, traditional geochemistry, and oxygen and hydrogen isotopes. Reducing the AMD load from these sites has been an historical priority. Our observations indicate that AMD generation at these sites in Indiana is driven by three complementary factors: elevated populations of chemolithotrophic microbes of the species Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans; a growth substrate that provides ‘food’ (e.g. pyrite) for these microbes, and a gob pile with geometry and other properties conducive to maintaining the thermal window of 25–40°C for optimal A. ferrooxidans growth. In particular, increasing levels of Fe+3 and total dissolved solids (TDS), and decreasing pH for gob waters were found to be highly correlated with increasing populations of A. ferrooxidans. Furthermore, the chemosythetic bacteria population increase correlates with increasing hydrogen stable isotope shift away from the global meteoric water line for gob waters in this study, though it is unclear if this shift is the result of microbial metabolic processes or a secondary effect due to microbially-mediated pH change or electrolysis.

Chemistry of major and minor elements, 87Sr/86Sr, δD, δ18O and δ34S of brines were measured from Tertiary strata and Quaternary salt lakes in the western Qaidam Basin. The water chemistry data show that all oilfield brines are CaCl2 type. They were enriched in Ca2+, B3+, Li+, Sr2+, Br−, and were depleted in Mg2+, SO42−, which indicated that these brines had the characteristics of deeply circulated water. The relationship between δD and δ18O shows that all data of these brines decline towards the Global Meteoric Water Line (GWL) and Qaidam Meteoric Water Line (QWL), and that the intersection between oilfield brines and Meteoric Water Lines was close to the local spring and fresh water in the piedmont in the western Qaidam Basin. The results suggest that oilfield brines has initially originated from meteoric water, and then might be affected by water-rock metamorphose, because most oilfield brines distribute in the range of metamorphosing water. The 87Sr/86Sr values of most oilfield brines range from 0.71121 to 0.71194, and was less than that in salt lake water (>0.712), but close to that of halite in the study area. These imply that salt dissolution occurred in the process of migration. In addition, all oilfield brines have obviously much positive δ34S values (ranging from 26.46‰ to 54.57‰) than that of salt lake brines, which was caused by bacterial sulfate reduction resulting in positive shift of δ34S value and depleteed SO42− in oilfield brines. Combined with water chemical data and δD, δ18O, 87Sr/86Sr, δ34S values, we concluded that oilfield brines mainly originate from the deeply circulated meteoric waters, and then are affected by salt dissolution, water-rock metamorphose, sulfate reduction and dolomitization during the process of migration. These processes alter the chemical compositions of oilfield brines and accumulate rich elements (such as B, Li, Sr, Br, K and so on) for sustainable utilization of salt lake resources in the Qaidam Basin.

Assessing the seasonal variation of groundwater recharge is important for effective management of groundwater resources. Stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen were used to estimate the sources of groundwater and seasonal contributions of precipitation to groundwater recharge in Chih-Pen Creek basin of eastern Taiwan. Based on the isotopes of precipitation (n = 177), two different local meteoric water regression lines (LMWL) can be obtained for the different seasons: δD = 8.0618O + 10.08 for wet season precipitation (May through October) and δD = 8.65δ18O + 17.09 for dry season precipitation (November through April). The slope and intercept of regression line for wet season precipitation are virtually identical to the global meteoric water line (GMWL) of Craig (1961). In contrast to during dry season precipitation due to evaporation effect the intercept of 17.09 is much higher than of the GMWL of 10. The results show the stable isotopes compositions of precipitation decrease with increasing rainfall amount and air temperature, due to the amount effect of precipitation is pronounced. The amount effect is clearly but do not show the temperature effect from January to December 2007. Using a mass-balance equation, a comparison of deuterium excess or d values of precipitation and groundwater indicates the groundwater consist of 76% wet season precipitation and 24% dry season precipitation, representing a distinct seasonal variation of groundwater recharge in study area. About 79% of the groundwater is recharged from the river water of the mountain watershed and 21% is from the rain that falls on the basin.

In this study, with the method of vacuum extraction, two evaporative processes of soil water and free water under equilibrium condition were simulated. For each sample, water vapor was condensed by liquid nitrogen and was collected in four time intervals. From the analysis of hydrogen and oxygen isotopic compositions of the water collected at different times, it was discovered that the isotope fractionation of soil water also follows the mode, which is just the same as the evaporative process of free water. The relationship between the stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in residual water showed that the simulative evaporation line was close to the global meteoric water line (GMWL) under the equilibrium condition at about 20°C. Comparison of the two types of evaporative processes indicated that the isotope fractionation and evaporation velocity of soil water were only slightly modified by the Van der Waals force.

Chemical and isotopic analyses of groundwater from the carbonated Jurassic aquifers in the Gijon-Villaviciosa basin (Asturias, northern Spain) were carried out. Nine springs were sampled to determine major cations and anions, as well as the stable isotopes of the water molecule (δ2H and δ18O) and sulphate (δ34S) values. Also, δ34S values from gypsum coming both from Triassic rocks and bottom of Jurassic sequence were also determined. The results obtained were used to classify the waters with a genetic criteria in three groups: (1) waters with a high gypsum influence, with sulphate coming from Jurassic gypsum, (2) waters without gypsum influence, where sulphate source could be atmospheric deposition from industrial processes and marine aerosol, and (3) waters with some gypsum influence, in which sulphate origin could be a combination of different sources. In relation to recharge, δ2H and δ18O values were close to those of Global Meteoric Water Line and fit a local line that suggests a meteoric origin. The estimated elevations for spring recharge are in agreement with those obtained from hydrogeological maps.

Q and R-mode multivariate statistical analyses were applied to groundwater chemical data from boreholes and wells in the northern section of the Volta region Ghana. The objective was to determine the processes that affect the hydrochemistry and the variation of these processes in space among the three main geological terrains: the Buem formation, Voltaian System and the Togo series that underlie the area. The analyses revealed three zones in the groundwater flow system: recharge, intermediate and discharge regions. All three zones are clearly different with respect to all the major chemical parameters, with concentrations increasing from the perceived recharge areas through the intermediate regions to the discharge areas. R-mode HCA and factor analysis (using varimax rotation and Kaiser Criterion) were then applied to determine the significant sources of variation in the hydrochemistry. This study finds that groundwater hydrochemistry in the area is controlled by the weathering of silicate and carbonate minerals, as well as the chemistry of infiltrating precipitation. This study finds that the δD and δ18O data from the area fall along the Global Meteoric Water Line (GMWL). An equation of regression derived for the relationship between δD and δ18O bears very close semblance to the equation which describes the GMWL. On the basis of this, groundwater in the study area is probably meteoric and fresh. The apparently low salinities and sodicities of the groundwater seem to support this interpretation. The suitability of groundwater for domestic and irrigation purposes is related to its source, which determines its constitution. A plot of the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) and salinity (EC) data on a semilog axis, suggests that groundwater serves good irrigation quality in the area. Sixty percent (60%), 20% and 20% of the 67 data points used in this study fall within the medium salinity — low sodicity (C2-S1), low salinity -low sodicity (C1-S1) and high salinity — low sodicity (C3-S1) fields, which ascribe good irrigation quality to groundwater from this area. Salinities range from 28.1 to 1956 μS/cm, whilst SAR values fall within the range 0–3. Extremely low sodicity waters of this kind, with salinities lower than 600 μS/cm, have the tendency to affect the dispersive properties of irrigation soils when used for irrigation. About 50% of the groundwater in the study area fall within this category and need prior treatment before usage.

The oxygen isotope ratios of diatoms (δ18Odiatom), and the oxygen and hydrogen isotope ratios of lake water (δW) of lakes in south Alaska provide insight into past changes in atmospheric circulation. Lake water was collected from 31 lakes along an elevation transect and diatoms were isolated from lake sediment from one lake (Mica Lake) in south Alaska. In general, δW values from coastal lakes overlap the global meteoric water line (GMWL). δW values from interior lakes do not lie on the GMWL; they fall on a local evaporation line trajectory suggesting source isotopes are depleted with respect to maritime lakes. Sediment cores were recovered from 58 m depth in Mica Lake (60.96° N, 148.15° W; 100 m asl), an evaporation-insensitive lake in the western Prince William Sound. Thirteen calibrated 14C ages on terrestrial macrofossil samples were used to construct an age-depth model for core MC-2, which spans 9910 cal years. Diatoms from 46, 0.5-cm-thick samples were isolated and analyzed for their oxygen isotope ratios. The analyses employed a newly designed, stepwise fluorination technique, which uses a CO2 laser-ablation system, coupled to a mass spectrometer, and has an external reproducibility of ±0.2‰. δ18Odiatom values from Mica Lake sediment range between 25.2 and 29.8‰. δ18Odiatom values are relatively uniform between 9.6 and 2.6 ka, but exhibit a four-fold increase in variability since 2.6 ka. High-resolution sampling and analyses of the top 100 cm of our lake cores suggest large climate variability during the last 2000 years. The 20th century shows a +4.0‰ increase of δ18Odiatom values. Shifts of δ18Odiatom values are likely not related to changes in diatom taxa or dissolution effects. Late Holocene excursions to lower δ18Odiatom values suggest a reduction of south-to-north storm trajectories delivered by meridional flow, which likely corresponds to prolonged intervals when the Aleutian Low pressure system weakened. Comparisons with isotope records of precipitation (δP) from the region support the storm-track hypothesis, and add to evidence for variability in North Pacific atmospheric circulation during the Holocene.

Stable isotope data and concentrations of the major cations and anions of groundwater from the northern part of the Volta Region, Ghana, were used to determine the source of recharge and the suitability of groundwater in the area for irrigation. This study finds that the delta deuterium (δD) and delta Oxygen-18 (δ18O) data from the area fall along the global meteoric water line (GMWL). An equation of regression derived for the relationship between δD and δ18O bears very close semblance to the equation which describes the GMWL. On the basis of this, groundwater in the study area is probably meteoric and fresh. The apparently low salinities and sodicities of the groundwater seem to support this interpretation. The suitability of groundwater for domestic and irrigation purposes is related to its source, which determines its constitution. A plot of the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) and electrical conductivity (EC) data on a semilog axis, suggests that groundwater serves good irrigation quality in the area. Sixty percent (60%), 20% and 20% of the 67 data points used in this study fall within the medium salinity–low sodicity (C2–S1), low salinity–low sodicity (C1–S1) and high salinity–low sodicity (C3–S1) fields, which ascribe good irrigation quality to groundwater from this area. Salinities range from 28.1 to 1,956 μS/cm, whilst SAR values fall within the range 0–3. Extremely low sodicity waters of this kind, with salinities lower than 600 μS/cm, have the tendency to affect the dispersive properties of irrigation soils when used for irrigation. About 50% of the groundwater in the study area fall within this category and need prior treatment before usage.

The groundwater wells in the Ramtha region of Jordan are tapping three aquifers: the upper, intermediate and deep aquifers. The upper aquifer groundwater is tritiated and its stable isotopic composition varies over a wide range. This signifies short residence times and local recharge from an elevation around 600 m above sea level. The groundwater of the upper aquifer has an elevated level of \( {\text{NO}}^{ - }_{{\text{3}}} \), which is attributed to anthropogenic sources. The intermediate and deep aquifers are untritiated and have long residence times. The stable isotope results signify a recharge elevation for the intermediate aquifer higher than that for the upper aquifer. Stable isotopes in groundwater from both aquifers clustered along the eastern meteoric water line and demonstrate association with the dominant climate of Jordan. The groundwater of the intermediate aquifer is classified as Ca2+- \( {\text{HCO}}^{ - }_{{\text{3}}} \), which reflects circulation through a carbonate aquifer. There is evidence that leakage from the upper aquifer has influenced the isotopic and chemical makeup of the groundwater in an intermediate aquifer well. The groundwater of the deep aquifer has the highest temperature in the basin and its isotopic composition is much more depleted than both the upper and intermediate aquifers and plots on the global meteoric water line.

Chemical data are used to clarify the hydrogeological regime in the Merdja area in Tebessa, as well as to determine the status of water quality in this area. Groundwater from the aquifer in the Merdja area can be divided into two major groups according to geographical locations and chemical compositions. Water in the center part of the area of study is characterized by the dominance of chloride, sulfate, sodium, and potassium; whereas waters in the limestone aquifers in the west are dominated by the same cations but have higher concentrations of bicarbonate. Stable isotopes show that the Tebessa aquifers contain a single water type, which originated in a distinct climatic regime. This water type deviates from the Global Meteoric Water Line (MWL), as well as from the Mediterranean meteoric water line. The water is poor in tritium, and thus can be considered generally older than 50 years. Piezometric map suggests that water is moving from the west towards the center of the studied area, and from east towards center. Degradation of water quality can be attributed to agricultural fertilizers in most cases, although the wadi El Kebir River is a contributor to pollution in the middle part of the studied area.

Stable isotope data for the Hueco Bolson aquifer (Texas, USA and Chihuahua, Mexico) distinguish four water types. Two types relate to recharge from the Rio Grande: pre-dam (pre-1916) river water with oxygen-18 and deuterium (δ18O, δD, ‰) from (−11.9, −90) to (−10.1, −82), contrasts with present-day river water (−8.5, −74) to (−5.3, −56). Pre-dam water is found beneath the Rio Grande floodplain and Ciudad Juarez, and is mixed with post-dam river water beneath the floodplain. Two other types relate to recharge of local precipitation; evidence of temporal change of precipitation isotopes is present in both types. Recharge from the Franklin and Organ Mountains plots between (−10.9, −76) and (−8.5, −60) on the global meteoric water line (GMWL), and is found along the western side of the Hueco Bolson, north of the Rio Grande. Recharge from the Diablo Plateau plots on an evaporation trend originating on the GMWL near (−8.5, −58). This water is found in the southeastern Hueco Bolson, north of the river; evaporation may be related to slow recharge through fine-grained sediment. Pre-dam water, recognizable by isotope composition, provides information on groundwater residence times in this and other dammed river basins.

The meteoric water deposited in the Chuncheon area was collected from July 2002 to May 2004 and its chemical and isotopic compositions were analyzed to examine if the isotopic data can help trace the sources of the sulfur pollutant and understand the details of acid formation processes in the air. The chemical compositions of the meteoric water indicate that the sulfate mostly comes from anthropogenic sources. The sulfur isotopic compositions of the dissolved sulfate in the meteoric water (δ34Sso4) vary from 2.6 to 7.5‰ with little seasonal differences, which are significantly different from those of the sulfur in the coal being locally consumed (−4.5 to −0.7‰). This difference indicates that the local coal consumption gives insignificant contribution to the pollutant sulfur in the acid deposition of the area. The relationship between (δ34Sso4) and the concentration of sulfate suggests that the sources of pollutant sulfur are variable and inhomogeneous. The oxygen isotopic compositions of the dissolved sulfate in the meteoric water (δ18O4) range from 9.0 to 17.2‰ which are generally lower in winter than in spring. Comparison between the measured and calculated values of (δ18Oso4) suggests that the oxygen isotopic exchange between sulfite and water occurs before its oxidation to sulfate. The extent of isotopic exchange seems to be not controlled by equilibrium but by kinetic fractionation. The poor correlation between δ34S4) and the oxygen isotopic composition of the meteoric water confinns the disequilibrium nature of the isotopic exchange.

Hydrochemical and stable isotope (18O and 2H) analyses of groundwater samples were used to establish the hydrochemistry of groundwater in the Ankobra Basin. The groundwater was generally mildly acidic, low in conductivity and undersaturated with respect to carbonate phases. Major ions except bicarbonate were low and dissolved silica was moderately high. Silicate minerals weathering is probably the main process through which major ions enter the groundwater. Groundwater samples clustered tightly along the Global Meteoric Water Line suggesting integrative, smooth and rapid recharge from meteoric origin. The majority of the boreholes and a few hand dug wells cluster towards the Ca–Mg–HCO3 dominant section of the phase diagram, in conformity with the active recharge and short residence time shown by the isotope data. Aluminium, arsenic, manganese, iron and mercury were the only trace metals analysed with concentrations significantly above their respective detection limits. Approximately 20%, 5%, 40% and 25% respectively of boreholes had aluminium, arsenic, iron and manganese concentrations exceeding the respective WHO maximum acceptable limits for drinking water. The relatively large percentage of boreholes with high concentration of aluminium reflects the acidic nature of the groundwater.

This study was based on the analysis of isotopic compositions of hydrogen and oxygen in samples from precipitation, groundwater and stream water. In addition, parts of groundwater samples were dated by carbon-14 and tritium. These data are integrated to provide other views of the hydrologic cycle in the Hsinchu-Miaoli groundwater district. The groundwater district is principally composed of Pleistocene and Holocene aquifers. The Pleistocene aquifers are highly deformed by folding and faults into small sub-districts with areas of only tens of square kilometers. These aquifers are exclusively recharged by local precipitation. The Holocene aquifers cover narrow creek valleys, only tens of meters in thickness. The local meteoric water line (LMWL), constructed from rainfall samples in the Hsinchu Science Park, is described by the equation δD=8.02δ18O+10.16, which agrees with the global meteoric water line. In addition, the precipitation isotopic compositions can be categorized into two distinct end members: typhoon type and monsoon type. The groundwater isotopic compositions are perfectly located on an LMWL and can be considered a mixture of precipitations. Based on the mass balance of isotopic compositions of oxygen and hydrogen, infiltration is more active in the rainy season with depleted isotopic compositions. The amount of infiltration during May–September is roughly estimated to comprise at least 55% of the whole year’s recharge. The isotopic compositions of stream water are expressed by a regression equation: δD=7.61δ18O+9.62, which is similar to the LMWL. Although precipitation isotopic compositions are depleted during summer time, the isotopic compositions contrarily show an enriched trend in the upstream area. This is explained by the opposite altitude effect on isotopic compositions for typhoon-related precipitations.

The present work was conducted in the Sinai Peninsula (1) to identify the recharge and flow characteristics and to evaluate the continuity of the Lower Cretaceous Nubian Sandstone aquifer; and (2) to provide information for the aquifer's rational appraisal. Isotopic and hydrochemical compositions combined with the geological and hydrogeological settings were used for this purpose. A considerable depletion in isotopic content (oxygen-18 and deuterium) and low d-excess values exist in the studied groundwater, reflecting the contribution of old meteoric water that recharged the aquifer in pluvial times. Modern recharge also occurs from precipitation that falls on the aquifer outcrops. The wide scatter of the data points around the two meteoric lines, the global meteoric water line (GMWL) and Mediterranean meteoric water line (MMWL), in the δ18O–δD diagram indicates considerable variation in recharge conditions (amount, altitude, temperature, air masses, distances from catchment, overland flow, etc.). The isotopic composition in the El-Bruk area is minimum (18O=–9.53‰), very close to the average value of the Western Desert Nubian Sandstone (18O=–10‰), where the local structural and lithologic conditions retard groundwater flow and the main bulk of water becomes noncyclic. The continuity of the aquifer in northern and central Sinai is evidenced by the isotopic similarity between samples taken from above and below the central Sinai Ragabet El-Naam fault, the distribution of potentiometric head, and hydrogeological cross sections. The combination of isotopic composition in terms of 18O and chemical composition in terms of TDS and salt contents is the basis for separating the studied groundwater into groups that reflect the recharge sources and isotopic and chemical modifications during flow.

Analyses of environmental isotopes (18O, 2H, and 87Sr/86Sr) are applied to groundwater studies with emphasis on saline groundwater in aquifers in the Keta Basin, Ghana. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios of groundwater and surface water of the Keta Basin primarily reflect the geology and the mineralogical composition of the formations in the catchments and recharge areas. The isotopic compositions of 18O and 2H of deep groundwater have small variations and plot close to the global meteoric water line. Shallow groundwater and surface water have considerably larger variations in isotopic compositions, which reflect evaporation and preservation of seasonal fluctuations. A significant excess of chloride in shallow groundwater in comparison to the calculated evaporation loss is the result of a combination of evaporation and marine sources. Groundwaters from deep wells and dug wells in near-coastal aquifers are characterized by relatively high chloride contents, and the significance of marine influence is evidenced by well-defined mixing lines for strontium isotopes, and hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopes, with isotopic compositions of seawater as one end member. The results derived from environmental isotopes in this study demonstrate that a multi-isotope approach is a useful tool to identify the origin and sources of saline groundwater.

87Sr/86Sr, δD and δ18O together with chemistry of oilfield brines, were measured from Cambrian to Neogene strata in the Kuqa Foreland Basin, northwest China. The brines have87Sr/86Sr ratios ranging from 0.70944 to 0.71716, δD values from −33‰ to −67‰ and δ18O from −9.0‰ to 3.9‰. The most radiogenic87Sr brines have relatively heavy δ18O in the Cambro-Ordovician carbonates, and are suggested to originate from crystalline basement. δD and δ18O systematics show that all the brines slope to Global Meteoric Water Line, and intersect at δD=−60‰ and δ18O=−8.8‰, close to that of present-day local meteoric water, suggesting that meteoric water has mixed with evaporated ancient meteoric water. More saline samples have the lowest δD and δ18O contents and molar Na/Cl ratios of more than 0.9, resulting from salt dissolution.

Groundwater from the shallow aquifer in the Mafraq area can be divided into two major groups according to geographical locations and chemical compositions. Water in the basaltic eastern part of the study area is characterized by the dominance of chloride, sulfate, sodium, and potassium, whereas waters in the limestone aquifers in the west are dominated by the same cations but have higher concentrations of bicarbonate. Stable isotopes show that the shallow aquifers contain a single water type which originated in a distinct climatic regime. This water type deviates from the Global Meteoric Water Line (MWL), as well as from the eastern Mediterranean meteoric water line. The waters are poor in tritium, and thus can be considered generally older than 50 years. Chemical mass balance models suggest that water is moving from the west towards the north of the study area. This suggests that waters from the different basins are separated from each other. Degradation of water quality can be attributed to agricultural fertilizers in most cases, although the waste-water treatment plant at Khirbet es Samra is a contributor to pollution in the southwestern part of the study area.

The meteoric origin of the geothermal water in Xi'an is evidenced by its H and O isotope composition. Based on the temperature dependence of isotopic composition, the temperature of meteoric water that replenishes the geothermal aquifers in Xi'an and its neighboring regions is calculated to be −13.28°C. The age of the geothermal water based on14C dating method is 10–30 kaBP, belonging to a secondary glacial period in Late Quaternary. The source of replenishment is considered to have mainly derived from glacial snow melt water from elevations higher than 2,000m (ASL) in Qinling Mountains.
