Jackleg drill operators are exposed to harmful levels of hand-arm vibration (HAV). Anti-vibration handles and gloves provide modest reductions in HAV exposures and forearm muscle exertion from the use of AV handles and gloves by jackleg drill operators. The goal of this pilot study was to investigate changes in HAV with the use of anti-vibration gloves and handles compared to forearm muscle exertion experienced by operators and measured with surface electromyography (EMG). Five subjects operated the drill under four different cases: no anti-vibration controls, anti-vibration gloves only, anti-vibration handle only, and simultaneous anti-vibration handle and glove use. Muscle exertion was expressed as a percent of maximum voluntary contraction (%MVC) and was compared using Welch’s ANOVA with Games-Howell post-hoc comparisons. The case with both anti-vibration controls in use simultaneously (largest grip diameter) was associated with a mean %MVC of 36.13% during operation for all forearm muscles combined, which was significantly higher than the other cases (p < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in mean HAV exposures. The anti-vibration handle with anti-vibration glove case only increased the maximum allowable exposure time by eight minutes as compared to the control case without any anti-vibration controls. These results suggest that the modest HAV exposure reductions from the use of anti-vibration handles and gloves may pale in comparison to the increased muscle exertion resulting from their use, and this tradeoff among jackleg drill operators is a potential concern that warrants further investigation.

Exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) among the labor force in the mining industry can result in permanent vibration diseases such as behavioral disorders, visual impairment, osteoporosis, pain (mostly in the hands, wrists, and shoulders), circulatory system disorders, and malnutrition. In this study, the vibration exposure of excavator operators working regularly in 25 different natural stone quarries was measured. In addition, the relationship between vibration exposure and rock properties was investigated. Gloved and ungloved vibration measurements were performed and revealed that antivibration gloves reduce excavator operators’ vibration exposure by 7.10–25.95%. Samples from each quarry were characterized with rock mechanics tests. The correlations between the hand-arm vibration measurements and the natural stone physical–mechanical properties (uniaxial compressive strength, Shore hardness, Knoop hardness, apparent density and total porosity) were determined to be over 70%. One finding of the study was that the health risk in excavators cannot be reduced sufficiently by the sole use of antivibration gloves. Furthermore, the excavation of any rock with a Knoop hardness above 121 is associated with an 81% risk of HAV. To increase awareness of the danger of vibration exposure for natural stone miners, training programs should be provided, and technical and operational changes should be implemented.

In many developed countries and cities, the construction industry, which is a major economic pillar, is expanding at a rapid pace. In this context, the use of construction machines and vibrating tools for various construction activities is indispensable. With the increasing use of handheld vibrating equipment, construction workers are exposed to hand-arm vibration (HAV), which is a serious occupational risk for those who work with vibrating tools and machinery that cause vibration damage to the fingers, hands and arms. Long-term and chronic exposure to HAV, it may induce hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), resulting in vascular, neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. HAVS causes permanent and irreversible damage, leading to a high level of disability and work impairment. Due to its severity, a pilot study of HAV is revisited in accordance with the existing exposure points system from the UK’s Health and Safety Executive. Two important factors are considered, namely worker’s age and local climate (e.g., temperature and humidity). A simple idea is proposed to optimize the applicability of the exposure points system to different age groups and climates. The findings of this human-based study may be used as a practical reference for policymakers and contractors.

This contribution addresses the early validation activities within the product development process of power tools. The aim of this article is to support these activities with multi directional hand-arm models predicting the passive interactions between the hand-arm system and power tool. Through the use of such models it is possible to achieve constant testing conditions in validation. The presented method for implementing these models is giving the possibility to analyze and model the interactions between user and power tool without influencing them. The implementation of the model is based on the theory that the interaction can be analyzed with the help of an overall system multi-body model. The contribution describes the steps to achieve the basic structure of the sub models for this overall system model and how to adjust the parameters of those multi-body simulation models. On the basis of this method, a hand-arm model is developed. The hand-arm model is able to simulate the passive behavior of a user during the usage of a high-accelerated power tool (gas actuated nail gun) in translational and rotational direction. With the help of this model, it is possible to investigate the interactions between power tool and the user and therefore to support the early validation of power tools under constant testing conditions.

Long-term exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) from powered machinery is known to be responsible for damage to the hand and arm. To protect workers, employers are required to apply appropriate measures to control vibration exposures. A key part of the process of effective assessment and control of vibration risks is the evaluation of vibration exposures. The vibration data required for exposure evaluation need to be suitable and sufficient to enable the appropriate actions to be taken. In Great Britain, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has provided tools designed to simplify exposure evaluation as part of employers’ risk assessments for vibration. These tools help to demystify the process and help employers move as quickly as possible from the evaluation of exposures to actively controlling risk. This paper discusses the tools provided by HSE designed to support the HAV risk assessment process. It reviews existing tools including the “rule of thumb”, which provides an initial indicator to likely risks, and the points system and calculator tool, which simplify the exposure calculation processes. The paper also introduces a table of indicative vibration magnitudes, which has been developed for a revision of HSE guidance to help employers to achieve initial estimates of likely vibration exposures. The objective of all these tools is to enable employers to get efficiently from risk assessment to making decisions about the requirements for vibration control and getting those controls implemented.

Hand-arm vibration exposure is most commonly acknowledged as a major contributor to the presence of vibration white finger in workers in cool to cold climatic regions. In warmer climatic regions without the cold to trigger the onset of an attack, hand-arm vibration syndrome is often overlooked and, as such, is suspected to be underdiagnosed in these areas. By engaging employees in activities such as awareness training, health surveys and monitoring and measuring activities for exposure times, vibration severity of tooling and effectiveness of anti-vibration gloves, management can demonstrate commitment to ensuring employee health and employees take ownership of the issues and their resolution. Summarised professionally and supported with other data such as costs involved with workers’ health claims, rehabilitation, re-training, back-filling of roles and the like, management can appreciate the full extent of the problem and see that being pro-active about reducing exposure can be good for business. Contractors can also be brought on the journey by including their tools in the assessment programme, assisting them to measure their exposure time and supporting them with expert resources to provide awareness training and health surveys.

Background: Occupational exposure to hand-transmitted vibration (HTV) is known to cause neurological symptoms such as numbness, reduced manual dexterity, grip strength and sensory perception. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to compare thermotactile perception thresholds for cold (TPTC) and warmth (TPTW) among vibration exposed manual workers and unexposed white collar workers during a follow-up period of 16 years to elucidate if long-term vibration exposure is related to a change in TPT over time. Methods: The study group consisted of male workers at a production workshop at which some of them were exposed to HTV. They were investigated in 1992 and followed-up in 2008. All participants were physically examined and performed TPT bilaterally at the middle and distal phalanges of the second finger. Two different vibration exposure dosages were calculated for each individual, i.e. the individual cumulative lifetime dose (mh/s2) or a lifetime 8-h equivalent daily exposure (m/s(2)). Results: A significant mean threshold difference was found for all subjects of about 4-5 degrees C and 1-2 degrees C in TPTW and TPTC, respectively, between follow-up and baseline. No significant mean difference in TPTC between vibration exposed and non-exposed workers at each occasion could be stated to exist. For TPTW a small but significant difference was found for the right index finger only. Age was strongly related to thermotactile perception threshold. The 8-h equivalent exposure level (A (8)) dropped from about 1.3 m/s2 in 1992 to about 0.7 m/s(2) in 2008. Conclusions: A lifetime 8-h equivalent daily exposure to hand-transmitted vibration less than 1.3 m/s(2) does not have a significant effect on thermotactile perception. Age, however, has a significant impact on the change of temperature perception thresholds why this covariate has to be considered when using TPT as a tool for health screening.

This study examined and compared the effect on temporary threshold shift in hearing (TTS) in healthy subjects of noise and hand-arm vibration (HAV) combined and separately using controlled and authentic exposure conditions. This study also investigated the effect on TTS in hearing in relation to gender after such exposures.Twenty-two healthy subjects (11 men/women, mean age 22 years, range 18-31 years) were exposed both separately and in combination with HAV (6.7 m/s(2)), using vibrating handles and to noise (99dB(A)) using headphones, for 20 min. The HAV and noise were reproduced from recordings from angular grinder in operation. Hearing thresholds at 1, 4, and 8 kHz were measured before and up to 30 min after exposure.Combined exposure to noise and HAV created significantly greater TTS in hearing than HAV exposure at 4 and 8 kHz alone. After exposure to HAV, there was no significant change in hearing threshold. At 1 kHz, there was a significant difference between noise and HAV exposure in TTS in hearing. There was no significant difference between combined exposure and noise exposure for any test frequency. There was no significant difference in TTS in hearing in relation to gender for 1, 4, and 8 kHz for HAV, noise, or a combined exposure.The results indicate that there is no difference in the TTS in hearing after combined exposure compared to noise exposure alone. HAV exposure did not change the hearing threshold. The TTS in hearing did not differ significantly in relation to gender after HAV, noise, or combined exposure.

This study focuses on the acute effects of vibration and how vibrations influence the measures of the thermal perception thresholds during different vibration magnitudes, frequencies, and durations.The fingers of ten healthy subjects, five males and five females, were exposed to vibration under 16 conditions with a combination of different frequency, intensity and exposure time. The vibration frequency was 31.5 and 125 Hz and exposure lasted between 2 and 16 min. The energy-equivalent frequency weighted acceleration, according to ISO 5349-1, for the experimental time of 16 min was 2.5 or 5.0 m/s(2) (r.m.s.), corresponding to a 8-h equivalent acceleration, A(8) of 0.46 and 0.92 m/s(2), respectively. A measure of the thermal perception of cold and warmth was conducted before the different exposures to vibration. Immediately after the vibration exposure the acute effect was measured continuously on the exposed index finger for the first 75 s, followed by 30 s of measures at every minute for a maximum of 10 min. If the subject's thermal thresholds had not recovered, the measures continued for a maximum of 30 min with measurements taken every 5 min.For all experimental conditions and 30 s after exposure, the mean changes of the thresholds compared with the pre-test were found to be 0.05 and -0.67 degrees C for the warmth and cold thresholds, respectively. The effect of the vibration exposure was only significant on the cold threshold and only for the first minute after exposure when the threshold was decreased. The warmth threshold was not significantly affected at all. The frequency and the exposure time of the vibration stimuli had no significant influence on the perception thresholds for the sensation of cold or warmth. Increased equivalent frequency weighted acceleration resulted in a significant decrease of the subjects' cold threshold, not the warmth. The thresholds were unaffected when changes in the vibration magnitude were expressed as the frequency weighted acceleration or the unweighted acceleration.When testing for the thermotactile thresholds, exposure to vibration on the day of a test might influence the results. Until further knowledge is obtained the previous praxis of 2 h avoidance of vibration exposure before assessment is recommended.

The aims of this study were (1) to evaluate subjective symptoms in the hand-arm system of all traffic police motorcyclists of a city located in the central part of Japan and (2) to assess their hand-arm vibration exposure associated with traffic police motorcycle riding. The study population consisted of 119 motorcycling traffic policemen and 49 male controls. By means of a questionnaire, information on the occupational history and the presence of subjective symptoms in the hand-arm system of all subjects was obtained. Vibration was measured on the handlebars of the representative motorcycles and on the hands of the riders. The 4- and 8-h energy-equivalent frequency-weighted acceleration as well as the lifetime vibration dose were calculated for all police motorcyclists. The prevalence of finger blanching in the traffic police motorcyclists was 4.2%, but none of the controls had this symptom. The rates of finger numbness (19.3%), finger stiffness (16.0%), shoulder pain (13.4%), and shoulder stiffness (45.4%) were significantly higher among police motorcyclists as compared with controls. The root-mean-square (rms) frequency-weighted acceleration on the handlebars of police motorcycles was in the range of 2.2-4.9 m/s2 rms. The computed 4- and 8-h energy-equivalent frequency-weighted acceleration values were 2.8-4.5 and 2.0-3.2 m/s2 rms, respectively. A pattern of increasing percentage prevalence with increasing cumulative vibration dose was noticed. The subjects with a lifetime vibration dose of more than 20.1 m2 h3 s-4 (in scale) showed significantly higher prevalence rates for symptoms in the fingers and shoulders as compared with the control group. As occupational vibration exposure of traffic police motorcyclists might be considered a risk factor for the development of symptoms in the hand-arm system of the riders, its evaluation and control is needed for prevention methodology evolution.

Object: To investigate whether hand-arm vibration and noise have a combined effect on temporary threshold shift (TTS) of hearing among healthy subjects. Method and design: Nineteen healthy subjects with an average age of 25.7 (SD 7.7) years were exposed to vibration (30 m/s2, 60 Hz), noise [90 dB(A)] and both, respectively. The subject’s right hand was placed on the plate of a vibrator and the right ear exposed to noise via headphones. Subjects were exposed to vibration and/or noise for 3 min and after a 1-min pause the exposure was repeated five times. Hearing thresholds at 1, 4 and 6 kHz were measured during the time periods before, between (during pauses) and after exposure. Results: Exposure to vibration alone caused almost no hearing threshold changes at every frequency tested. But exposure to noise or a combination of vibration and noise caused a significant increase in TTSs at 4 and 6 kHz. Moreover, exposure to a combination of vibration and noise caused significantly higher TTSs than exposure to noise at 4 and 6 kHz. Conclusion: The present results demonstrate the combined effects of hand-arm vibration and noise on hearing: simultaneous exposure to hand-arm vibration and noise can enhance the TTS of hearing more than noise exposure, though hand-arm vibration alone may hardly affect TTS.

On the basis of data presented in our previous reports, the current study was undertaken to estimate frequency-weighted hand-arm vibration exposure limits for various daily exposure times. The procedures for the present study were as follows. (1) The prevalence of vibration-induced white finger (VWF) as well as the vibration exposure were investigated in various groups of workers operating hand-held vibrating tools. The vibration magnitude of various tools was measured and the results were presented as the energy-equivalent frequency-weighted root-mean-square (m/s2 rms) acceleration. The purpose of the occupational medicine component of a joint research project was to study the effects of grip and push forces on the acute reaction of the hand-arm system under vibrating conditions. Several series of experiments were carried out by means of a vibration simulator in a laboratory environment in order to study biodynamic vibration behaviour, muscle response, skin temperature, shifts of the vibration perception threshold and the intensity of subjective vibration perception; in addition, field tests with hammer drills were conducted. On the whole, the findings obtained suggest that the coupling of the hand with the handle involved in using vibrating tools has a considerable impact on the stresses to which the hand-arm system is exposed. For this reason, future national and international rules and regulations on vibration assessment should take into consideration the effects of variations in coupling intensity.

To assess the effects of vibrating-tool operation on the autonomic and peripheral nervous system, we measured the variability in the electrocardiographic R-R interval (CVRR) and the distribution of nerve conduction velocities (DCV) in 24 men who were vibrating-tool operators and in 17 healthy adult men (control group). Of the 24 tool operators, 13 had a history of vibration-induced white finger [VWF(+) group] and 11 had no such history [VWF(−) group]. Two components of CVRR, i.e. C-CVRSA and C-CVMWSA, which have been considered to reflect parasympathetic and sympathetic activities, respectively, were also examined. Both the CVRR and the C-CVRSA in the VWF(+) group and the CVRR in the VWF(−) group were found to be significantly depressed as compared with the control values; moreover, a significant difference in the C-CVRSA was observed between the VWF(+) group and the VWF(−) group. The faster DCVs and the sensory median nerve conduction velocity were significantly slowed in the VWF (+) and VWF(−) groups. The C-CVMWSA was significantly correlated with most of the DCV parameters and with the median nerve conduction velocities in all 24 vibrating-tool operators. These data suggest that operation of vibrating tools, which involves exposure to combined stressors of local vibration, heavy work, climate, and noise, affects both the faster myelinated nerve-fiber activity and the parasympathetic activity; the sympathetic activity at rest in workers exposed to hand-arm vibration may be related to depression of peripheral nerve conduction.

Under laboratory conditions 14 healthy male subjects were exposed to hand-arm vibration (ahzw = 6.3 m/s2) at different air temperatures (5 degrees, 12 degrees, 18 degrees and 25 degrees C). Static load (grip force 15 N, push force 40 N) was kept constant. Finger tip temperature as an indirect criterion of the peripheral blood circulation was measured. As expected, low air temperatures (5 degrees, 12 degrees and 18 degrees C) cause a strong decrease of skin temperature. Under additional stress of vibration connected with static load, a further decrease of the mean skin temperature was noted. At this, static load proved to have a predominant influence on the acute diminution of skin temperature. The individual reaction to the stressors varied considerably. Field tests during practical work with a chain saw at low air temperatures showed results similar to those of the laboratory tests. The protective effect of a grip heating system could be demonstrated.

Twenty-three patients with hand-arm vibration exposure and diagnosed vibration syndrome were given a thorough clinical and neurophysiological examination, together with finger strain gauge plethysmography. Eleven of the patients were forest workers regularly using chain saws (low frequency vibration exposure), and twelve were metal grinders (higher frequency vibration exposure). Both groups had significantly lower finger blood pressures than healthy controls, and comparisons between the groups indicated that the mean values tended to be lower in the grinders. The findings suggest that hand-arm vibration exposure is associated with obstructive changes in the distal arteries of the fingers, and that vibration frequency is one of the factors determining the severity of the changes and the time of onset of the symptoms.
