Empirical evidence has shown that visually enhancing the saliency of reward probabilities can ease the cognitive demands of value comparisons and improve value-based decisions in old age. In the present study, we used a time-varying drift diffusion model that includes starting time parameters to better understand (1) how increasing the saliency of reward probabilities may affect the dynamics of value-based decision-making and (2) how these effects may interact with age. We examined choices made by younger and older adults in a mixed lottery choice task. On a subset of trials, we used a color-coding scheme to highlight the saliency of reward probabilities, which served as a decision-aid. The results showed that, in control trials, older adults started to consider probability relative to magnitude information sooner than younger adults, but that their evidence accumulation processes were less sensitive to reward probabilities than that of younger adults. This may indicate a noisier and more stochastic information accumulation process during value-based decisions in old age. The decision-aid increased the influence of probability information on evidence accumulation rates in both age groups, but did not alter the relative timing of accumulation for probability versus magnitude in either group., Scientific Reports, 12 (1), ISSN:2045-2322

Two new secoiridoid glycosides, named picrosecoside A (1) and picrosecoside B (2), have been isolated from the underground part of Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence.

Myocardial infarction, a leading cause of death intheWesternworld(1), usually occurs when the fibrous cap overlying an atherosclerotic plaque in a coronary artery ruptures. The resulting exposure of blood to the atherosclerotic material then triggers thrombus formation, which occludes the artery(2). The importance of genetic predisposition to coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction is best documented by the predictive value of a positive family history(3). Nextgeneration sequencing in families with several affected individuals has revolutionized mutation identification(4). Here we report the segregation of two private, heterozygous mutations in two functionally relatedgenes, GUCY1A3 (p.Leu163Phefs*24) andCCT7 (p.Ser525Leu), in an extended myocardial infarction family. GUCY1A3 encodes the alpha 1 subunit of soluble guanylyl cyclase (alpha 1-sGC)(5), and CCT7 encodes CCT eta, a member of the tailless complex polypeptide 1 ring complex(6), which, among other functions, stabilizes soluble guanylyl cyclase. After stimulation with nitric oxide, soluble guanylyl cyclase generates cGMP, which induces vasodilation and inhibits platelet activation(7). Wedemonstratein vitro that mutations inbothGUCY1A3 and CCT7 severely reduce alpha 1-sGC as well as beta 1-sGC protein content, and impair soluble guanylyl cyclase activity. Moreover, platelets from digenic mutation carriers contained less soluble guanylyl cyclase protein and consequently displayed reduced nitric-oxideinduced cGMP formation. Mice deficient in alpha 1-sGC protein displayed accelerated thrombus formation in themicrocirculation after local trauma. Starting with a severely affected family, we have identified a link between impaired soluble-guanylyl-cyclase-dependent nitric oxide signalling and myocardial infarction risk, possibly through accelerated thrombus formation. Reversing this defect may provide a new therapeutic target for reducing the risk of myocardial infarction.

The red drums, Sciaenops ocellatus, are predatory marine fish from Atlantic American coast. They were introduced to Taiwan for aquaculture purpose in 1987 and have been reported in the wild along the southwest coast of Taiwan since 1998. Their current distribution is on the western coast of Taiwan and the Matsu Islands of Fujian Province where there are sand and mud bottoms. However, the discontinuous populations of Taiwan and Matsu indicated different sources of introduction. The facts that there are consecutive records of red drums for 7 years including every single month, at multiple localities, and the fish’s larger size all point to their survival in the wild. The mechanisms of their introductions are probably the escapes from net cages as well as the deliberate releases to improve fisheries and for religious activities. This paper documents for the first time a marine fish has invaded and established in coastal water off western Taiwan and the Indo-West Pacific. The ecological impact of red drums on the local fish community is still unknown and calls for further studies.
