Magnesium (Mg) alloys have a high strength/weight ratio, high dimensional stability, good machinability, and the ability to be recycled. However, their poor corrosion resistance in humid environments limits their usage for exterior aerospace components. This study aims to improve the corrosion resistance of two Mg alloys (AZ31B and AZ91) by using aluminum coatings. The latter have been deposited by a low pressure and temperature cold spray process. An aluminum powder (60 wt%) with a particle size ranging between 1 and 8 µm and nickel powder (40 wt%) with a particle size of about 70 µm were blended and used as feedstock powder. The coating thickness was about 240 μm. Its densification was achieved by the in-situ hammering effect of the nickel particles. The shot-peening effect also resulted in an enhanced coating hardness. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of the coatings have been investigated. They showed that the aluminum had a face centered cubic structure. Potentiodynamic polarization tests were performed along with a combination of materials characterization techniques to assess the corrosion resistance of the coatings when immersed in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for long durations. The results revealed that the corrosion resistance increased with the immersion time because of the formation of a protective oxide layer on the surface. These results were supported by elemental and structural analyses. This study shows that cold-sprayed aluminum coatings are a promising candidate for enhancing the corrosion resistance of AZ31B and AZ91Mg alloys compared to other thermal spray processes.

The tribo-mechanical properties of NiMoAl-Cr2AlC MAX phase composite coatings on stainless steel substrate have been investigated. NiMoAl with different amounts of Cr2AlC (10, 20, 50 and 100 wt.%) were prepared by turbo-mixing and deposited by High-Velocity Oxy-Fuel (HVOF) method on stainless steel substrate. The phase composition, microstructure, chemical composition, tribological and mechanical properties of the coatings were analyzed using x-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), Energy-Dispersive x-ray analysis (EDAX), pin-on-disk wear testing rig and nanohardness tester, respectively. The worn surfaces were analyzed by metallurgical optical microscope, FESEM and three-dimensional surface profiler to understand the wear behavior in detail. The addition of the Cr2AlC MAX phase in NiMoAl enhances the mechanical properties and reduces the surface roughness and porosity. NiMoAl-20 wt.% Cr2AlC and Cr2AlC coatings containing equal amounts of oxygen and carbon in the tribofilm show the low coefficient of friction (COF) and wear rate. The addition of the Cr2AlC MAX phase in the NiMoAl matrix up to 20 wt.% reduces the wear rate by one order of magnitude and enhances the coating life by 7000 twist fatigue cycles.

The aim of the present study is to develop thermally sprayable WC-12Co and WC-12Co-xAl2O3 (x = 10 and 15 wt.%) cermet coatings on steel substrate (SS 304) by high-velocity oxy fuel (HVOF) method. Influence of Al2O3 addition on the wear and corrosion behavior of WC-12Co coating has been studied. The microstructure and chemical composition of the coatings were analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), and phase identification was carried out using x-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. The morphology of the coating appears as coarse granular structure. The XRD studies revealed the presence of hexagonal WC phase along with η-Co6W6C phase. It has been observed from the microhardness measurements, that the values gradually increase from 950 to 1300 HK with the addition of Al2O3 from 0 to 15 wt.%. The wear rate of WC-12Co-15Al2O3 (3.19 × 10−6 mm3/Nm) and WC-12Co-10Al2O3 (5.26 × 10−6 mm3/Nm) coatings was seen to be one order of magnitude lower than that of WC-12Co (2.9 × 10−5 mm3/Nm) coating. The polarization studies revealed that WC-12Co-15Al2O3 cermet coating showed superior corrosion protection than that of WC-12Co-10Al2O3 and WC-12Co coatings. This has been attributed to the gradual decrease in the porosity levels with an increase in Al2O3 content which is supported by morphology studies. The microhardness and wear behavior of WC-12Co-Al2O3 coatings are equivalent to those of hard chrome suggesting the possibility of its replacement.

Manganese-doped LaMgAl11O19 powder has been prepared by an easy combustion method. Powder x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy have been used to characterize the as-prepared phosphor. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum of LaMgAl11O19:Mn2+ phosphor exhibits six-line hyperfine structure centered at g ≈ 1.973. The number of spins participating in resonance (N) and the paramagnetic susceptibility (χ) for the resonance signal at g ≈ 1.973 have been calculated as a function of temperature. The photoluminescence spectrum exhibits green emission at 516 nm, which is attributed to 4T1 → 6A1 transition of Mn2+ ions. From EPR and luminescence studies, it is observed that Mn2+ ions occupy Mg2+ sites and Mn2+ ions are located at tetrahedral sites in the prepared phosphors.

A comparative study of spherical and rod-like nanocrystalline GdO:Eu (GdEuO) red phosphors prepared by solution combustion and hydrothermal methods have been reported. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) results confirm the as-formed product in combustion method showing mixed phase of monoclinic and cubic of GdO:Eu. Upon calcinations at 800C for 3 h, dominant cubic phase was achieved. The as-formed precursor hydrothermal product shows hexagonal Gd(OH):Eu phase and it converts to pure cubic phase of GdO:Eu on calcination at 600C for 3 h. TEM micrographs of hydrothermally prepared cubic GdO:Eu phase shows nanorods with a diameter of 15 nm and length varying from 50 to 150 nm, whereas combustion product shows the particles to be of irregular shape, with different sizes in the range 50-250 nm. Dominant red emission (612 nm) was observed in cubic GdO:Eu which has been assigned to transition. However, in hexagonal Gd(OH):Eu, emission peaks at 614 and 621 nm were observed. The strong red emission of cubic GdO:Eu nanophosphors by hydrothermal method are promising for high performance display materials. The variation in optical energy bandgap () was noticed in as-formed and heat treated systems in both the techniques. This is due to more ordered structure in heat treated samples and reduction in structural defects.

The red emitting Cr3+ activated α-Al2O3 powder phosphor has been prepared by easy combustion reactions from mixed metal nitrate reactants and urea with ignition temperatures of 500 °C. The as-synthesized powder was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared techniques. The X-ray diffraction pattern reveals that the phosphor crystallized in the hexagonal α-Al2O3 phase directly from the combustion reaction. The EPR spectrum exhibits an intense resonance signal with effective g value at g=3.33 along with a few weak resonance signals with effective g values at g=13.7, 2.34, 1.95, 1.49, and 1.26. The spin concentration (N) and its paramagnetic susceptibility (χ) have been evaluated. The excitation spectrum consists of two broad intense bands at 415 nm and 555 nm and are assigned to 4A2g (F)→4T1g (F) and 4A2g (F)→4T2g (F) transitions, respectively. The intense fluorescence peak around 691 nm is attributed to 2E g →4A2g transition of Cr3+ ion. By correlating EPR and optical data, the crystal field splitting parameter (Dq), Racah inter-electronic repulsion parameter (B) have been evaluated and discussed. The EPR and optical studies reveal that Cr3+ ions are occupying in Al3+ sites in octahedral coordination.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films have been prepared on silicon substrates by sol–gel spin coating technique with spinning speed of 3,000 rpm. The films were annealed at different temperatures from 200 to 500 °C and found that ZnO films exhibit different nanostructures at different annealing temperatures. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that the ZnO films convert from amorphous to polycrystalline phase after annealing at 400 °C. The metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) capacitors were fabricated using ZnO films deposited on pre-cleaned silicon (100) substrates and electrical properties such as current versus voltage (I–V) and capacitance versus voltage (C–V) characteristics were studied. The electrical resistivity decreased with increasing annealing temperature. The oxide capacitance was measured at different annealing temperatures and different signal frequencies. The dielectric constant and the loss factor (tanδ) were increased with increase of annealing temperature.

Manganese-doped BaAl12O19 green phosphor was prepared using a self-propagating (combustion) synthesis. Powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the as-prepared combustion product. A room temperature photoluminescence study shows an emission line at 513 nm corresponding to a transition from the upper 4T1 → 6A1 ground state of Mn2+ ions. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum exhibits six line hyperfine structure at g = 1.981. From the EPR spectrum, the spin-Hamiltonian parameters have been evaluated. The g value indicates that the site symmetry around Mn2+ ions is distorted tetrahedral. The number of spins (N) participating in the resonance for g = 1.981 is measured as a function of temperature. The paramagnetic susceptibility (χ) is calculated from the EPR data at various temperatures. From the plot 1/χ versus T, the Curie constant (C) and Curie paramagnetic temperature (θp) have been evaluated and discussed.

An efficient red emitting ZnAl2O4:Cr3+ powder phosphor material was prepared at furnace temperatures as low as 500 °C by using the combustion method. The prepared powders were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The optical properties were studied using photoluminescence technique. The EPR spectra exhibit an intense resonance signal at g = 3.74 which is attributed to Cr3+–Cr3+ pairs, and the weak resonance signal of at g = 1.97 is attributed to Cr3+ single ion transition. The spin population (N) has been evaluated as a function of temperature. The excitation spectrum exhibits two broad bands in the visible region which are characteristic of Cr3+ ions in octahedral symmetry and the emission spectrum exhibits zero-phonon line frequencies along with vibronic frequencies. The crystal field parameter (Dq) and Racah parameters (B and C) have been evaluated and discussed.

Gadolinium-activated Y2O3 phosphor has been prepared by combustion process in a short time of 5 min. The phosphors are well characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive analysis of X-ray. The as-prepared Y2O3:Gd powder shows that all the peaks are due to the Y2O3 cubic phase. Upon UV light excitation (276 nm), the phosphor exhibits a strong and sharp UV emission at 314 nm and is ascribed to $$ ^{ 6} {\text{P}}_{ 7/ 2} \, {\to}\, ^{ 8} {\text{S}}_{ 7/ 2} $$ transition of Gd3+ ions. The EPR spectrum of Y2O3:Gd phosphor exhibits resonance signals with effective g values at g = 1.96, g = 2.88, and g = 6.08 and are attributed to Gd3+ ions located at sites with weak, intermediate, and strong cubic symmetry fields, respectively. It is observed that the population of spin levels (N) and linewidth depends on temperature. The paramagnetic susceptibility (χ) is also evaluated as a function of temperature and discussed.

Yttrium aluminum garnet (Y3Al5O12) and Mn activated Y3Al5O12 phosphors have been prepared by urea combustion route in less than 5 min. The phosphors are well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic techniques. Photoluminescence tests on the pure Y3Al5O12 showed a strong green emission at 525 nm (2.36 eV) attributed to the strongly allowed transition of F+ center whereas in Mn2+ activated YAG the green emission at 519 nm is due to the 4T1 (G)→6A1 (S) transition of Mn2+ ions. EPR studies have been carried out on Mn2+ activated Y3Al5O12 phosphor at 300 and 110 K. From EPR spectra the spin-Hamiltonian parameters have been evaluated. The magnitude of the hyperfine splitting (A) indicates that the Mn2+ ions are in a moderately ionic environment. The spin concentration (N) and paramagnetic susceptibility (χ) have been evaluated and discussed.

Structural properties of natural jasper from Taroko Gorge (Taiwan) have been investigated by means of powder X-ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic techniques. The EPR spectrum at room temperature exhibits a sharp resonance signal at g = 2.007 and two more resonance signals centered at g ≈ 4.3 and 14.0. The resonance signal at g = 2.007 has been attributed to the E′ center and is related to a natural radiation-induced paramagnetic defect. Two more resonance signals centered at g ≈ 4.3 and 14.0 are characteristic of Fe3+ ions. The EPR spectra recorded at room temperature of jasper samples, heat-treated at temperatures ranging from 473 to 1,473 K exhibit marked temperature dependence. The resonance signal corresponding to E′ center disappears at elevated temperatures. A broad, intense resonance signal centered at g ≈ 2.0 appears at elevated temperatures. This resonance signal is a characteristic of Fe3+ ions, which are present as hematite in the jasper sample. The intensity of the resonance signal becomes dominant at elevated temperatures at ≥873 K, masking g ≈ 4.3 and g ≈ 14.0 resonance signals. The EPR spectra of jasper heat-treated at 673 K have been recorded at temperatures between 123 and 296 K. The population of spin levels (N) has been calculated for the broad g ≈ 2.0 resonance signal. It is found that N decreases with decreasing temperature. The linewidth (ΔH) of g ≈ 2.0 resonance signal of the heat-treated jasper is found to increase with decreasing temperature. This has been attributed to spin–spin interaction of the Fe3+ ions present in the form of hematite in the studied jasper sample.

A natural sample of clinochlore from the Longitudinal Valley area of northeastern Taiwan has been characterized by using the powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic techniques. The lattice parameters of the monoclinic (IIb) clinochlore with the composition (Mg2.988 Al1.196 Fe1.6845 Mn0.026)5.8945 (Si2.559 Al1.441)4 O10 (OH)8 have been calculated from the powder XRD data and are found to be a = 5.347 A, b = 9.223 A, c = 14.250 A, β = 97.2° and Z = 2. The thermal behaviour of the sample showed the typical behaviour of clinochlore with a hydroxyl content of 12.5 wt%. The EPR spectrum at room temperature exhibits two resonance signals centred at g ≈ 2.0 and g ≈ 8.0. The signal at g ≈ 2.0 shows a six-line hyperfine structure which is a characteristic of Mn2+ ions in octahedral symmetry. The resonance signal at g ≈ 8.0 is a characteristic of Fe3+ ions. The EPR spectra have also been recorded at different temperatures (123–295 K). The population of spin levels (N) has been calculated for g ≈ 2.0 and g ≈ 8.0 resonance signals. It is observed that N increases with decreasing temperature. From EPR spectra, the spin-Hamiltonian parameters have been evaluated. The zero-field splitting parameter (D) is found to be temperature dependent. The peak-to-peak width of the g ≈ 8.0 resonance signal is found to increase with decrease in temperature.

Thermally stable macroporous $CaSiO_3$, $Fe^{3+}-$ and $Ni^{2+}-$doped (0.5 to 5 mol%) ceramics have been prepared by solution combustion process by mixing respective metal nitrates (oxidizers), fumed silica. Diformol hydrazine is used as a fuel. The combustion products were identified by their X-ray diffraction and thermal gravimetry/differential thermal analysis. Single phases of \beta-$CaSiO_3$ and \alpha-$CaSiO_3$ were observed at 950 and 1200 °C, respectively. The phase transition temperatures of combustion-derived $CaSiO_3$ were found to be lower compared to those obtained via solid-state reaction method. It is interesting to note that with an increase in the calcination temperature the samples become more porous with an increase in the pore diameter from 0.2 to 8 \mu m. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum of $Fe^{3+}$ ions in $CaSiO_3$ exhibits a weak signal at g = 4.20 ± 0.1 followed by an intense signal at g = 2.0 ± 0.1. The signal at g = 4.20 is ascribed to isolated $Fe^{3+}$ ions at rhombic site. The signal at g = 2.0 is due to $Fe^{3+}$ coupled together with dipolar interaction. In $Ni^{2+}$-doped $CaSiO_3$ ceramics the EPR spectrum exhibits a symmetric absorption at g = 2.23 ± 0.1. This deviation from the free electron g-value is ascribed to octahedrally coordinated $Ni^{2+}$ ions with moderately high spin–orbit coupling. The number of spins participating in resonance and the paramagnetic susceptibilities have been evaluated from EPR data as a function of $Fe^{3+}$ as well as $Ni^{2+}$ content. The effect of alkali ions (Li, Na and K) on the EPR spectra of these ceramics has also been studied.
