Satellite remote sensing, with its relatively short history, is going to play a major role in the fields that encompass topics related to place and space. Through this innovation in technology, real-time monitoring and mapping of changing phenomena on the surface of the earth has been possible. The purpose of this study was to investigate and evaluate the Kaunas city air pollutants between 14 and 25 October 2019 using environmental station data and satellite data (Terra, Aqua, OMI, and Sentinel-5P). The data obtained from satellite and the pollutant data gathered from air quality monitoring stations located in different parts of Kaunas were used. The data was downloaded for days mentioned above for the geographical bound of Kaunas city. Each data file covered an area of the size of Lithuania; hence, we should have extracted data for the area of interest, which was Kaunas city. The overall results of this study confirmed the capability of Sentinel-5P data to be used in monitoring the air quality and air pollution over the Kaunas local area. The existence of strong and acceptable correlations between satellite data and in situ measurements was indicative of the ability of satellite images to monitor air pollution, particularly over Kaunas urban areas during the fire incident in the city of Alytus.

Traffic-calming measures act as the instruments to reduce the speed of vehicles. They make a major contribution to road safety; however, on the other hand, air pollution is more likely to occur due to the fact that motor vehicles use brakes and accelerate more frequently. The study reviewed two types of traffic-calming devices, that is, trapezoid-shaped speed humps made of asphalt and plastic circular speed bumps. The obtained results showed an increase in the concentrations of NO, NO2 and CO found in the pollutants emitted from the vehicles approaching speed bumps/humps compared to the concentrations of the same types of pollutants at the check points. As for trapezoidal speed humps, the concentration of nitrogen dioxide increased on average by 1.8 times, that of nitrogen monoxide by 4.3 times and that of carbon monoxide by 2.2 times. Meanwhile, the concentration of nitrogen dioxide at circular plastic speed bumps rose on average by 2.5 times, that of nitric monoxide by 5.0 times and that of carbon monoxide by 3.2 times.

Biochar as a filtering media has been attracted increasing attention for applications in urban storm-water runoff (USWR) management. Up-flow percolation tests were conducted with pine bark (PB) and biochars from PB (BCPB) for evaluating changes in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) concentrations varying with pyrolysis temperatures (i.e., 300, 450, and 700 °C) and types of USWR (i.e., roof and pathway USWR). The most suitable pyrolysis temperature for limiting DOC leaching from BCPB depends on the types of USWR. For all the adopted pyrolysis temperature, BCPB released cumulative amount of DOC up to 0.01% of the TC content in the up-flow percolation tests with pathway USWR. The physical and chemical characteristics of radon gas make it a good tracer for use in the application of atmospheric transport models. Radon exhalation rate from soil is one of the most important factors for evaluation of the environmental radon level. For this purpose to find out the volumetric activity of radon in ground-level air the measuring has been made using radon monitor SARAD RTM 2200. Radon volumetric activity and radon exhalation rate in ground-level air and at different depths of soil depending on soil temperature and atmospheric parameters in different seasons of the year was calculated and evaluated in two areas of Vilnius city. It has been established that the volumetric activity of radon and radon exhalation intensity is vertically distributed and the corresponding increase in deeper soil layers, and depends on the specific activity of radium, soil temperature and moisture content, temperature difference between soil and atmospheric temperatures.
