Hardware-based cryptography that exploits physical unclonable functions is required for the secure identification and authentication of devices in the Internet of Things. However, physical unclonable functions are typically based on anticounterfeit identifiers created from randomized microscale patterns or non-predictable fluctuations of electrical response in semiconductor devices, and the validation of an encrypted signature relies on a single-purpose method such as microscopy or electrical measurement. Here we report nanoscale physical unclonable function labels that exploit non-deterministic molecular self-assembly. The labels are created from the multilayer superpositions of metallic nanopatterns replicated from self-assembled block copolymer nanotemplates. Due to the nanoscale dimensions and diverse material options of the system, physical unclonable functions are intrinsically difficult to replicate, robust for authentication and resistant to external disturbance. Multiple, independently operating keys—which use electrical resistance, optical dichroism or Raman signals—can be generated from a single physical unclonable function, offering millisecond-level validation speeds. We also show that our physical unclonable function labels can be used on a range of different surfaces including dollar bills, human hair and microscopic bacteria.

The attachment of flexible spacers into aromatic polymers is a molecular design approach that is used for improving processability of aromatic polymers. The concept is attractive because it enables not only the creation of aromatic polymers with improved processability but it is also possible to control phase morphology by simply introducing pendant side chains. Here we report new bisphenol A derivatives bearing alkyl chains of different lengths obtained by an addition reaction can readily make novel poly(arylene sulfone)s with aromatic dihalides and aromatic dioles. They were observed using two-dimension diffusion-ordered spectroscopy nuclear magnetic resonance (2D DOSY NMR) spectra. Attaching flexible alkyl groups into sulfonated poly(arylene sulfone)s allows for increased control of glass transition temperatures, T g , of sulfonated poly(arylene sulfone)s. The alkylated sulfonated poly(arylene sulfone)s had flexibility, increased surface contact angle, improved methanol permeability, and high ion conductivity compared to the neat polymer. Due to the creation of aromatic polymers with improved processability by simply introducing pedant side chains, this novel alkylation method is expected to be applicable to other arylene based proton conductive polymers.

Realizing practical high performance materials and devices using the properties of 2D materials is of key research interest in the materials science field. In particular, building well-defined heterostructures using more than two different 2D components in a rational way is highly desirable. In this paper, a 2D heterostructure consisting of atomic thin titania nanosheets densely grown on reduced graphene oxide surface is successfully prepared through incorporating polymer functionalized graphene oxide into the novel TiO2 nanosheets synthesis scheme. As a result of the synergistic combination of a highly accessible surface area and abundant interface, which can modulate the physicochemical properties, the resultant heterostructure can be used in high efficiency visible light photocatalysis as well as fast energy storage with a long lifecycle.

Rapid progress in the portable and flexible electronic devises has stimulated supercapacitor research towards the design and fabrication of high performance flexible devices. Recent research efforts for flexible supercapacitor electrode materials are highly focusing on graphene and chemically modified graphene owing to the unique properties, including large surface area, high electrical and thermal conductivity, excellent mechanical flexibility, and outstanding chemical stability. This invited review article highlights current status of the flexible electrode material research based on chemically modified graphene for supercapacitor application. A variety of electrode architectures prepared from chemically modified graphene are summarized in terms of their structural dimensions. Novel prototypes for the supercapacitor aiming at flexible miniature devices, i.e. microsupercapacitor with high energy and power density are highlighted. Future challenges relevant to graphene-based flexible supercapacitors are also suggested.

Water repellent elastomeric surfaces were fabricated successfully on SBS/MWNT nanocomposites films using the breath figure method and subsequent thermal treatment. The uniformly dispersed CNTs were found to play significant roles in tuning the size and ordering of the macroporous morphology at the nanocomposite surface as well as enhancing the mechanical properties of nanocomposites. In particular, the CNTs dispersed in a nanocomposite solution retarded the coarsening process of aqueous droplets during the breath figure process and decreased the pore size in the finally fabricated film. The water contact angle measurement showed that the double-scale structure comprised of self-organized macropores and surface the roughness induced by a thermal treatment produced a highly water-repellent nanocomposite surface.

A variety of end-functionalized polymers were grafted spontaneously onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) using a solution mixing process. The end-functional groups of the polymers underwent noncovalent grafting to the defect sites at the surface of the purified MWNTs through zwitterionic interaction or hydrogen bonding. The physically grafted polymers including polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), polyethylene oxide (PEO), and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) provided sufficient compatibility with an organic solvent or polymer matrix, such that the nanotubes could be finely dispersed in various organic media. This approach is universally applicable to a broad range of polymer-solvent pairs, ensuring highly dispersed carbon nanotubes through simple solution mixing.

Commercialization of graphene based applications inevitably requires cost effective mass production. From the early days of research on graphene, direct liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) of graphite has been considered as the most promising strategy to produce high-quality mono or few-layer graphene sheets in solvent dispersion forms. Substantial success has been achieved thus far in the LPE of graphene employing numerous solvent systems and suitable surfactants. This invited review article principally showcase the recent research progress as well as shortcomings of surfactant assisted LPE of graphene. In particular, a comprehensive assessment of the quality and yield of the graphene sheets produced by different categories of the surfactants are summarized. Future direction of LPE methods is also proposed for the eventual success of commercial applications.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been chemically modified through the formation of carboxylic acid functionalities or by grafting octadecylamine and polystyrene onto them. We purified SWNTs with nitric acid to remove some remaining catalysts and amorphous carbon materials. After purification, we broke the carbon nanotubes and shortened their lengths by using a 3∶1 mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid and nitric acid. During these purification and cutting processes, carboxylic acid units formed at the open ends of the SWNTs. Octadecylamine and amino-terminated polystyrene were grafted onto the cut SWNTs by condensation reactions between the amine and carboxylic acid units. The cut SWNTs did not disperse in organic solvents, but the octadecylaminegrafted and polystyrene-grafted SWNTs dispersed well in dichloromethane and aromatic solvents (e.g., benzene, toluene). Composites were prepared by mixing polystyrene with the octadecylamine-grafted or polystyrene-grafted SWNTs. Each composite had a higher dynamic storage modulus than that of a pristine polystyrene. The composites exhibited enhanced storage moduli, complex viscosities, and unusual non-terminal behavior when compared with a monodisperse polystyrene matrix because of the good dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the polystyrene matrix.

Parallel processes for patterning densely packed nanometre-scale structures are critical for many diverse areas of nanotechnology. Thin films of diblock copolymers can self-assemble into ordered periodic structures at the molecular scale (approximately 5 to 50 nm), and have been used as templates to fabricate quantum dots, nanowires, magnetic storage media, nanopores and silicon capacitors. Unfortunately, perfect periodic domain ordering can only be achieved over micrometre-scale areas at best and defects exist at the edges of grain boundaries. These limitations preclude the use of block-copolymer lithography for many advanced applications. Graphoepitaxy, in-plane electric fields, temperature gradients, and directional solidification have also been demonstrated to induce orientation or long-range order with varying degrees of success. Here we demonstrate the integration of thin films of block copolymer with advanced lithographic techniques to induce epitaxial self-assembly of domains. The resulting patterns are defect-free, are oriented and registered with the underlying substrate and can be created over arbitrarily large areas. These structures are determined by the size and quality of the lithographically defined surface pattern rather than by the inherent limitations of the self-assembly process. Our results illustrate how hybrid strategies to nanofabrication allow for molecular level control in existing manufacturing processes.

A microstructural lattice simulation for textured liquid crystalline polymer is carried out to predict rheological behavior, especially the stress evolution after shear inception. It is based on a combination of two main concepts: (i) the director in each cell of a supramolecular lattice has an orientation described by the minimization of total energy of director map, and (ii) the torque balance of each director under shear flow and anisotropic relaxational shear moduli depends on the averaged orientation of the director map. By considering the interaction between the nearestneighbor directors, the spatial orientational correlation is introduced and the spatial heterogeneity, i.e., a polydomain texture, is generated simultaneously. For the start-up shear flow, the overshoot and the steady value of shear stress increase and the former shifts toward a shorter time as the applied shear rate increases. Also, the calculated stress evolution is compared with the experimental result of a thermotropic liquid crystalline poly(ester-imide).
