Abstract

Tap water contains some heavy metals and bio-organic substances with variety of concentration and these cannot be treated using regular physicochemical processes. So the present study, aims at evaluating the effectiveness of the sterilization using electrocatalytic technique with Escherichia coli (E. coli) as the observed index. The operational parameters such as anode material, voltage, inflow method, and electrode number are studied to understand the variation of pH, conductivity, E. coli, and residual chlorine of tap water. The outcome reveals that the maximum sterilization efficiency of E. coli is obtained using the titanium dioxide electrode, followed by ruthenium dioxide and graphite. A disinfection efficiency of 98% can be easily achieved. Also, the appropriate increase in the operating voltage can increase the sterilization efficiency and decrease the treatment time. The sterilization efficiency of the E. coli can reach 100% under the continuous inflow of tap water and the voltage of 60 V for 1 min, which meets the conventional standard of drinking water (6 CFU/100ml). The estimated operating cost of treatment of 1 ton of tap water is NTD 1.7.

Abstract

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and activin A are both overexpressed in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). We evaluated their clinical correlation and activin A-mediated EGFR regulation in this study. Overexpression of both transcripts/proteins indicated a poorer prognosis in OSCC patients. Knockdown of endogenous INHBA repressed the expression of EGFR and inhibited activin A-mediated canonical Smads, noncanonical phosphorylation of AKT (ser473) (p-AKT ser473) and SP1. Inhibition of PI3K signaling via its inhibitor attenuated p-AKT ser473 and in turn reduced SP1 and EGFR expression in the presence of recombinant activin A (rActivin A) in OSCC cells, as revealed via a luciferase assay and western blotting. However, canonical Smad signaling repressed the EGFR promoter, as revealed by a luciferase assay. The transcription factor SP1, its coactivator CBP/p300, and Smad proteins were recruited to the EGFR proximal promoter following rActivin A treatment, as revealed by chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP). Smad2/3/4 dramatically outcompeted SP1 binding to the EGFR proximal promoter following mithramycin A treatment. Activin A activates the PI3K and Smad pathways to compete for binding to overlapping SP1 consensus sequences on the EGFR proximal promoter. Nevertheless, canonical p-Smad2 was largely repressed in OSCC tumor tissues, suggesting that the activin A-mediated noncanonical pathway is essential for the carcinogenesis of OSCC.

Abstract

Laparoscopy is widely used during living kidney donation, nephrectomy, bariatric surgery, and surgery for gastrointestinal tumors and colorectal cancer. However, laparoscopic surgery requires prolonged use of instruments and has low mechanical efficiency. In addition, to meet specific surgical demands while visualizing the surgical area on the screen, surgical personnel frequently violate the postures proposed by human factor engineering; this naturally results in a physical burden on the personnel. In this study, using laparoscopic nephrectomy as an example, an auxiliary hoisting device for surgery was designed, and pedals from a variety of equipment were integrated into the auxiliary plant. Both entity testing conducted in the hospital and 3D surgical simulation of the auxiliary plant showed that this device could improve compliance with human factor engineering recommendations during laparoscopic surgery and could also promote interaction and tacit understanding between surgical personnel, thereby providing ergonomically optimum conditions during laparoscopy.

Abstract

The authors investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to a class of systems of delay differential equations. It is shown that every bounded solution of such a class of systems tends to a constant vector as t → ∞. Our results improve and extend some corresponding ones already known.

Abstract

Microbial granules were grown in a column-type sequential aerobic sludge blanket reactor inoculated with activated sludge flocs taken from a wastewater treatment plant and containing a medium with glucose as the main carbon source. The reactor selected for granules that could settle rapidly by employing a short settling time of 2 min. Matured granules with diameters between 2 and 3 micro m were examined for anaerobic bacteria as their presence can signal the onset of diffusion limitation problems that can potentially diminish granule stability due to the bacterial production of fermentation gases and organic acids under anaerobic conditions. To detect the anaerobes in the granules, clones were constructed from 16S rRNA PCR amplicons. Two sequence types associated with a strict anaerobe Bacteroides spp. were identified from these clones. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) followed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) demonstrated that cells of Bacteroides spp. were concentrated at a depth of approximately 800 micro m below the surface of the granule. Cell enumeration using flow cytometry showed that the percentage of labeled cells of Bacteroides spp. compared to total bacterial cells in the granules was 0.56%. This is the first study to use a suite of culture-independent techniques to report the presence of a defined species of anaerobic bacteria in aerobically grown microbial granules.

Abstract

The initiator diffusion technique was used in this study to prepare the gradient index(GI) plastic rods, in which two kinds of initiators were used, i.e., thermal initiator and redox initiator. Experimental results showed that a GI plastic rod with a parabolic profile of refractive index was obtained by the initiator diffusion technique. The difference of the refractive index from the center to the periphery (Δn) of the plastic rods was in the range of 0.004–0.014. Δn increased with increasing temperature due to the increase of the gel effect and diffusion rates of monomers at a higher temperature. Furthermore, the GI plastic rod had substantially less defects, e.g., bubbles and opaqueness, than that prepared from interfacial-gel copolymerization.
