The COVID-19 pandemic has created urgent demand for rapid detection of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Herein, we report highly sensitive detection of SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein (N protein) using nanoparticle-enhanced surface plasmon resonance (SPR) techniques. A crucial plasmonic role in significantly enhancing the limit of detection (LOD) is revealed for exceptionally large gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with diameters of hundreds of nm. SPR enhanced by these large nanoparticles lowered the LOD of SARS-CoV-2 N protein to 85 fM, resulting in the highest SPR detection sensitivity ever obtained for SARS-CoV-2 N protein. more...

Terahertz digital holography (THz-DH) has the potential to be used for non-destructive inspection of visibly opaque soft materials due to its good immunity to optical scattering and absorption. Although previous research on full-field off-axis THz-DH has usually been performed using Fresnel diffraction reconstruction, its minimum reconstruction distance occasionally prevents a sample from being placed near a THz imager to increase the signal-to-noise ratio in the hologram. In this article, we apply the angular spectrum method (ASM) for wavefront reconstruction in full-filed off-axis THz-DH because ASM is more accurate at short reconstruction distances. We demonstrate real-time phase imaging of a visibly opaque plastic sample with a phase resolution power of λ/49 at a frame rate of 3.5 Hz in addition to real-time amplitude imaging. We also perform digital focusing of the amplitude image for the same object with a depth selectivity of 447 μm. Furthermore, 3D imaging of visibly opaque silicon objects was achieved with a depth precision of 1.7 μm. A terahertz (THz) frequency synthesizer based on photomixing of two near-infrared lasers with a sub-THz to THz frequency offset is a powerful tool for spectroscopy of polar gas molecules due to its broad spectral coverage; however, its frequency accuracy and resolution are relatively low. To tune the output frequency continuously and widely while maintaining its traceability to a frequency standard, we developed a photomixing THz synthesizer phase-locked to dual optical frequency combs (OFCs). While the phase-locking to dual OFCs ensured continuous tuning within a spectral range of 120 GHz, in addition to the traceability to the frequency standard, use of a broadband uni-traveling carrier photodiode for photomixing enabled the generation of CW-THz radiation within a frequency range from 0.2 to 1.5 THz. We demonstrated THz frequency-domain spectroscopy of gas-phase acetonitrile CH3CN and its isotope CH3 13CN in the frequency range of 0.600–0.720 THz using this THz synthesizer. Their rotational transitions were assigned with a frequency accuracy of 8.42 × 10−8 and a frequency resolution of 520 kHz. Furthermore, the concentration of the CH3CN gas at 20 Pa was determined to be (5.41 ± 0.05) × 1014 molecules/cm3 by curve fitting analysis of the measured absorbance spectrum, and the mixture ratio of the mixed CH3CN/CH3 13CN gas was determined to be 1:2.26 with a gas concentration of 1014–1015 molecules/cm3. A practical method for the absolute frequency measurement of continuous-wave terahertz (CW-THz) radiation uses a photocarrier terahertz frequency comb (PC-THz comb) because of its ability to realize real-time, precise measurement without the need for cryogenic cooling. However, the requirement for precise stabilization of the repetition frequency (f rep) and/or use of dual femtosecond lasers hinders its practical use. In this article, based on the fact that an equal interval between PC-THz comb modes is always maintained regardless of the fluctuation in f rep, the PC-THz comb induced by an unstabilized laser was used to determine the absolute frequency f THz of CW-THz radiation. Using an f rep-free-running PC-THz comb, the f THz of the frequency-fixed or frequency-fluctuated active frequency multiplier chain CW-THz source was determined at a measurement rate of 10 Hz with a relative accuracy of 8.2 × 10−13 and a relative precision of 8.8 × 10−12 to a rubidium frequency standard. Furthermore, f THz was correctly determined even when fluctuating over a range of 20 GHz. We applied a multivariate analysis method to time-domain (TD) data obtained in terahertz (THz) reflectometry for predicting the thickness of a single-layered paint film deposited on a metal substrate. For prediction purposes, we built a calibration model from TD-THz waveforms obtained from films of different thicknesses but the same kind. Because each TD-THz wave is approximate by the superposition of two echo pulses (one is reflected from the air–film boundary and the other from the film–substrate boundary), a difference in thickness gives a relative peak shift in time in the two echo pulses. Then, we predicted unknown thicknesses of the paint films by using the calibration model. Although any multivariate analysis method can be used, we proposed employing a modified partial-least-squares-1 (PLS1) method because it gives a superior calibration model in principle. Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy is a promising method for analysing polar gas molecules mixed with unwanted aerosols due to its ability to obtain spectral fingerprints of rotational transition and immunity to aerosol scattering. In this article, dynamic THz spectroscopy of acetonitrile (CH3CN) gas was performed in the presence of smoke under the atmospheric pressure using a fibre-based, asynchronous-optical-sampling THz time-domain spectrometer. To match THz spectral signatures of gas molecules at atmospheric pressure, the spectral resolution was optimized to 1 GHz with a measurement rate of 1 Hz. The spectral overlapping of closely packed absorption lines significantly boosted the detection limit to 200 ppm when considering all the spectral contributions of the numerous absorption lines from 0.2 THz to 1 THz. Temporal changes of the CH3CN gas concentration were monitored under the smoky condition at the atmospheric pressure during volatilization of CH3CN droplets and the following diffusion of the volatilized CH3CN gas without the influence of scattering or absorption by the smoke. International audience; The generation of cw-THz radiation by photomixing is particularly suited to the high resolution spectroscopy of gases; nevertheless, until recently, it has suffered from a lack of frequency metrology. Frequency combs are a powerful tool that can transfer microwave frequency standards to optical frequencies and a single comb has permitted accurate (10−8) THz frequency synthesis with a limited tuning range. A THz synthesizer composed of three extended cavity laser diodes phase locked to a frequency comb has been constructed and its utility for high resolution gas phase spectroscopy demonstrated. The third laser diode allows a larger tuning range of up to 300 MHz to be achieved without the need for large frequency excursions, while the frequency comb provides a versatile link to be established from any traceable microwave frequency standard. The use of a single frequency comb as a reference for all of the cw-lasers eliminates the dependency of synthesized frequency on the carrier envelope offset frequency. We demonstrate the potential of femtosecond two-color pulse interferometry for in vitro optical glucose monitoring, by dispersion of the group refractive index in a glucose solution sample with respect to a red-color light and a blue-color light. By comparison with femtosecond one-color pulse interferometry, the basic performance of the present system with regard to sensitivity, quantitativeness, and tolerance to surrounding disturbances, is evaluated. The resulting accuracy and precision of glucose determination are 77 and 118mg/dl for 10-mm-sample-thickness, respectively. This near-common-path configuration of the two-color pulse light provides good stability to fluctuations of sample temperature, which is important in clinical applications. Considering the performance of femtosecond two-color pulse interferometry as an optical glucose sensor, a suitable measurement site for in vivo optical glucose monitoring is discussed. more...

To elucidate the calcium content of the arteries in the upper and lower limbs, the authors determined the calcium content of all the arteries in the upper and lower limbs continuously by microwave-induced plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. The subjects were an 87-yr-old man and a 72-yr-old woman. The calcium content was determined both in the arteries of the upper limbs continuously, such as the subclavian arteries and its distal arteries, and in the arteries of the lower limbs, such as the common iliac arteries and its distal arteries. The common finding that the higher accumulation of calcium occurred in the arteries of the lower limbs in comparison to the arteries of the upper limbs and extremely high accumulation of calcium occurred in the common, external, and internal iliac arteries was obtained in the two subjects. To optimise an NC program, the first step is to understand the cutting conditions or parameters. Such cutting parameters as radial and axial depths of cut and material removal rate (MRR) are implied in the NC program. In this paper, for the commonly used 21/2-axis milling, a new technique for extracting the implicit cutting parameters from NC programs is proposed based on the tool path simulation, and a prototype is developed. Furthermore, an optimisation strategy of NC programs with the constant MRR is suggested, based on the extraction. The technique is different from previous ones in that 3D calculation is simplified to 1D, a huge memory is not needed and the calculation is extremely fast. A high-power, unmodulated frequency standard laser light with low running cost is a powerful tool for industrial measurement involving laser calibration and interferometry in length and shape. To obtain such a laser light, we developed an intermittent frequency offset locked laser (IFOL laser). This laser system, composed of an iodine stabilized He-Ne laser (I2SL) and a high-powered symmetric three-mode He-Ne laser (HP-3ML, optical output=5 mW), provides two stabilization operational modes: (1) independent mode (I-mode) and (2) slave mode (S-mode). Utilizing the frequency pulling effect, HP-3ML is stabilized at the condition of symmetric three-mode oscillation, and a 3 mW single-mode light with frequency instability of 10-12 is obtained (I-mode). When the optical frequency deviates from the allowed limit during I-mode, HP-3ML is temporarily offset-locked to I2SL (S-mode) with frequency resettability of 10-10 and frequency instability of 10-12. After completion of the drift reset in S-mode, HP-3ML is stabilized in I-mode again, and then I2SL is turned off. In a typical case of allowed drift in ±1 MHz, repetitive operation of I-mode for 10 days and S-mode for 5 min was satisfactory. Such an intermittent operation reduces the working time of I2SL dramatically, resulting in low running cost that enables long-term use in industrial measurement. more...

There is a need for an intense, unmodulated single-frequency stabilized laser light that guarantees absolute optical frequency in a rapid laser calibration or an ultra-high resolution interferometer. To obtain such a light, we developed a new laser system that uses an intermittent frequency offset lock of a symmetric three-mode stabilized He-Ne laser to an iodine stabilized He-Ne laser. The proposed laser system provides two operational modes: (1) independent and (2) slave mode. In the independent mode, frequency of the three-mode laser is stabilized via control of frequency difference between two intermode beats. The resultant output is a single longitudinal mode light of maximum intensity that locates at the top of the gain curve. Frequency instability of 8X10-12 (at a sampling time of 100 s) which is better than conventional stabilized lasers is attained in the independent mode. Slow optical frequency drift during the independent mode is periodically corrected by the offset lock to the iodine stabilized laser (slave mode), resulting in accurate reset of the frequency drift. After reset of the frequency deviation, the three-mode laser is again operated in the independent mode. Due to such intermittent offset lock, duty factor of the iodine stabilized laser was reduced to a few % of continuous operation. more...

A single-mode frequency stabilized laser with modulation-free and moderate power is desired as a light source for an ultra-high resolution interferometer system and/or a rapid laser calibration system. For this purpose, we developed a new stabilized laser system that utilizes intermittent control of a 2 mW transverse Zeeman stabilized He-Ne laser (Zeeman laser) with an iodine stabilized He-Ne laser (I2 stabilized laser). Because of the intermittent control, working time of the I2 stabilized laser is reduced. The Zeeman laser has two operational modes: independent and slave mode. In the independent mode, the Zeeman laser is stabilized through control of Zeeman beat frequency. Temperature dependent drift of the oscillation frequency during the independent mode is periodically corrected by the slave operation utilizing frequency offset locking to the I2 stabilized laser. Frequency instability of the Zeeman laser in independent and slave modes is 7.7X10-11 and 2.0X10-11, respectively, at the sampling time of 100 s. more...

The low molecular weight carbohydrate compositions of the seeds of 29 species ofVicia, namelyV. amoena, V. amurensis, V. bifolia, V. dumetorum, V. fauriei, V. japonica, V. nipponica, V. pisiformis, V. pseudo-orobus, V. sylvatica, V. unijuga, V. venosa, V. cassubica, V. orobus, V. cracca agg.,V. hirsuta, V. villosa agg.,V. tetrasperma,V. oroboides, V. sepium, V. cuspidata, V. grandiflora, V. lathyloides, V. sativa agg.,V. bithynica, V. faba, V. narbonensis, V. hybrida andV. lutea were determined by gas liquid chromatography. The carbohydrate compositions were found to be species-specific. Principal component analysis of the carbohydrate composition data showed that these species can be divided into three groups. Although, as far as the examined species were concerned, these groups were not correlated with the known subgenera, significant correlation between the groups and the known sections was detected in the subgenusVicia. On their low molecular weight carbohydrate compositions, this subgenus has been divided into 2 subgroups, mungo-radiata group and angularis group. Four other species referred to the subgeneraPlectotropis (Schumach.) Bak.,Lasiospron (Benth. emend Piper) Marechal, Mascherpa et Stainier andVigna, V. vexillata (L.) A. Rich.,V. lasiocarpa (Benth.) Verdc.,V. marina (Burm.) Merr. andV. unguiculata (L.)
