The indications for percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) and percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) are painful vertebral compression fractures. Our study is to assess the risk–benefit ratio of PKP/PVP surgery in the patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) without receiving antimyeloma therapy. The clinical data of 426 consecutive patients with NDMM admitted to our center from February 2012 to April 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. The baseline data, postoperative pain relief, the proportion of recurrent vertebral fractures, and survival time were compared between the PKP/PVP surgical group and the nonsurgical group in the NDMM patients. Of the 426 patients with NDMM, 206 patients had vertebral fractures (206/426, 48.4%). Of these, 32 (32/206, 15.5%) underwent PKP/PVP surgery for misdiagnosis of simple osteoporosis prior to diagnosis of MM (surgical group), and the other 174 (174/206, 84.5%) did not undergo surgical treatment prior to definitive diagnosis of MM (non-surgical group). The median age of patients in the surgical and nonsurgical groups was 66 and 62 years, respectively (p = 0.01). The proportion of patients with advanced ISS and RISS stages was higher in the surgical group (ISS stage II + III 96.9% vs. 71.8%, p = 0.03; RISS stage III 96.9% vs. 71%, p = 0.01). Postoperatively, 10 patients (31.3%) never experienced pain relief and 20 patients (62.5%) experienced short-term pain relief with a median duration of relief of 2.6 months (0.2–24.1 months). Postoperative fractures of vertebrae other than the surgical site occurred in 24 patients (75%) in the surgical group, with a median time of 4.4 months postoperatively (0.4–86.8 months). Vertebral fractures other than the fracture site at the first visit occurred in 5 patients (2.9%) in the nonoperative group at the time of diagnosis of MM, with a median time of 11.9 months after the first visit (3.5–12.6 months). The incidence of secondary fractures was significantly higher in the surgical group than in the nonsurgical group (75% vs. 2.9%, p = 0.001). The time interval between the first visit and definitive diagnosis of MM was longer in the surgical group than in the nonsurgical group (6.1 months vs. 1.6 months, p = 0.01). At a median follow-up of 32 months (0.3–123 months), median overall survival (OS) was significantly shorter in the surgical group than in the nonsurgical group (48.2 months vs. 66 months, p = 0.04). Application of PKP/PVP surgery for pain relief in NDMM patients without antimyeloma therapy has a limited effect and a high risk of new vertebral fractures after surgery. Therefore, patients with NDMM may need to have their disease controlled with antimyeloma therapy prior to any consideration for PKP/PVP surgery.

Characterizing the metabolic profile of a microbial community is crucial for understanding its biological function and its impact on the host or environment. Metabolomics experiments directly measuring these profiles are difficult and expensive, while sequencing methods quantifying the species composition of microbial communities are well-developed and relatively cost-effective. Computational methods that are capable of predicting metabolomic profiles from microbial compositions can save considerable efforts needed for metabolomic profiling experimentally. Yet, despite existing efforts, we still lack a computational method with high prediction power, general applicability, and great interpretability. Here we develop a new method — mNODE (Metabolomic profile predictor using Neural Ordinary Differential Equations), based on a state-of-the-art family of deep neural network models. We show compelling evidence that mNODE outperforms existing methods in predicting the metabolomic profiles of human microbiomes and several environmental microbiomes. Moreover, in the case of human gut microbiomes, mNODE can naturally incorporate dietary information to further enhance the prediction of metabolomic profiles. Besides, susceptibility analysis of mNODE enables us to reveal microbe-metabolite interactions, which can be validated using both synthetic and real data. The presented results demonstrate that mNODE is a powerful tool to investigate the microbiome-diet-metabolome relationship, facilitating future research on precision nutrition.

The survival benefit of icotinib (an oral epidermal growth factor receptor [EGFR] tyrosine kinase inhibitor) in patients with advanced lung cancer has been confirmed in several studies. This study (ICAPE) evaluated the efficacy of icotinib as adjuvant therapy for patients with stage IIA-IIIA EGFR-mutant non-small-cell lung adenocarcinoma. Patients with stage IIA-IIIA EGFR-mutant non-small-cell lung adenocarcinoma were enrolled in the multicenter, open-label, single-arm, phase II study. Eligible patients received oral icotinib 125 mg thrice daily for 1.5 years after complete surgical resection. The primary endpoint was disease-free survival (DFS). Between March 2014 and January 2018, 79 patients were enrolled. The median follow-up time was 39.7 months with a median DFS and overall survival (OS) of 41.4 months (95% CI: 33.6-51.8) and 67.0 months (95% CI: 21.2-not reached [NR]), respectively. The 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year OS rates were 100%, 83.3%, and 61.7%, respectively. No significant difference was found in the median DFS between patients with Bcl-2 interacting mediator of cell death (BIM) mutant-type and wild-type (NR vs. 41.7 months; p = 0.75). No significant difference was found in the median DFS according to EGFR mutation types. Icotinib as adjuvant therapy demonstrated a favorable survival benefit in patients with stage IIA-IIIA EGFR-mutant non-small-cell lung adenocarcinoma, indicating that icotinib might be a promising treatment option for this patient population. The optimal adjuvant duration of icotinib is still not clear and needs more incoming data to answer.

To examine whether or not associations between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and impaired fasting glucose and type 2 diabetes are mediated by obesity.We used cross-sectional data including participants from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). SDB, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), hypoxia and sleep fragmentation, was evaluated by polysomnography. Further, five obesity measures related to overall obesity and central obesity were assessed. Mediation analysis was conducted to explore the mediating effect of obesity on these relationships between SDB and impaired fasting glucose and type 2 diabetes.Among 1615 participants, OSA and hypoxia, including apnea hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 15, percent of total sleep time (TST) with SaOObesity, especially central obesity, may play a critical role in the pathway where SDB, including OSA and hypoxia, increases the occurrence of impaired fasting glucose and type 2 diabetes. Weight management is important for patients with SDB to prevent type 2 diabetes.

Glioma is a common brain tumor with high mortality. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) play crucial roles in tumor occurrence and development. However, the function and molecular basis of circ_0079593 in glioma remain unknown. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and Western blot were used for expression determination of circ_0079593, microRNA-324-5p (miR-324-5p) and X-box binding protein 1 (XBP1). Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), colony formation, flow cytometry, transwell assays, and tube formation assay were employed to evaluate cell functions. Glycolysis was determined via detecting glucose consumption, lactate production and ATP level. The binding relationship between miR-324-5p and circ_0079593 or XBP1 was validated by dual-luciferase reporter assay and RNA Immunoprecipitation (RIP) assay. Besides, xenograft assay was applied to test tumor growth in vivo. Circ_0079593 and XBP1 levels were elevated, while miR-324-5p level was declined in glioma. Silencing of circ_0079593 restrained proliferation, mobility, angiogenesis and glycolysis and induced apoptosis in glioma cells. Circ_0079593 accelerated glioma progression via sequestering miR-324-5p, one of the targets of circ_0079593. XBP1 was a target gene of miR-324-5p, and miR-324-5p alleviated the malignant growth of glioma by repressing XBP1. Furthermore, silence of circ_0079593 hindered tumor growth in vivo. Circ_0079593 contributed to the malignant evolution of glioma via modulating miR-324-5p and downstream XBP1 gene, suggesting that circ_0079593 might be a promising therapeutic target for glioma. Circ_0079593 was boosted in glioma. Circ_0079593 depletion restrained glioma progression. Circ_0079593 triggered glioma development via miR-324-5p/XBP1 axis. Circ_0079593 silence suppressed glioma tumorigenesis in vivo.

The High Line park (HLP) in New York City is one of the most successful contemporary greenway parks, inspiring urban planners, designers, artists, and administrators worldwide. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of user experiences in a long-term time frame (2011–2018) through the lens of online reviews. Using a mixed-methods approach, we conducted Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling to quantitatively identify the key topics that represent 34,060 reviews and 30,285 users, followed by qualitative analysis to inductively interpret the LDA topics. The results identified experiential, programmatic and physical elements of the HLP that are meaningful to users. Three primary components were found that make HLP successful according to users: spectacular visual and activity-related experiences, the historical transformation and cultural exploration, and the added value from park services ranging from amenities to on-site living performance. The article helps inform future decision-making and planning & design practices for future greenway projects.

Elabela (ELA), which is the second endogenous peptide ligand of the apelin receptor (APJ) to be discovered, has been widely studied for potential use as a therapeutic peptide. However, its role in ischemic stroke (IS), which is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide and has limited therapeutic options, is uncertain. The aim of the present study was to investigate the beneficial effects of ELA on neuron survival after ischemia and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Primary cortical neurons were isolated from the cerebral cortex of pregnant C57BL/6J mice. Flow cytometry and immunofluorescence showed that ELA inhibited oxygen–glucose deprivation (OGD) -induced apoptosis and axonal damage in vitro. Additionally, analysis of the Gene Expression Omnibus database revealed that the expression of microRNA-124-3p (miR-124-3p) was decreased in blood samples from patients with IS, while the expression of C-terminal domain small phosphatase 1 (CTDSP1) was increased. These results indicated that miR-124-3p and CTDSP1 were related to ischemic stroke, and there might be a negative regulatory relationship between them. Then, we found that ELA significantly elevated miR-124-3p expression, suppressed CTDSP1 expression, and increased p-AKT expression by binding to the APJ receptor under OGD in vitro. A dual-luciferase reporter assay confirmed that CTDSP1 was a direct target of miR-124-3p. Furthermore, adenovirus-mediated overexpression of CTDSP1 exacerbated neuronal apoptosis and axonal damage and suppressed AKT phosphorylation, while treatment with ELA or miR-124-3p mimics reversed these effects. In conclusion, these results indicated that ELA could alleviate neuronal apoptosis and axonal damage by upregulating miR-124-3p and activating the CTDSP1/AKT signaling pathway. This study, for the first time, verified the protective effect of ELA against neuronal injury after ischemia and revealed the underlying mechanisms. We demonstrated the potential for the use of ELA as a therapeutic agent in the treatment of ischemic stroke. Graphical Abstract

Background English as a Media of Instruction (EMI) teacher development project is based upon the framework for teacher Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and aims to effectively improve both the confidence and overall capacity of EMI lecturers. Kunming Medical University(KMU) conducted the EMI training project to improve teachers’ competence for MBBS education. This study aimed to assess teachers’ changes following the implementation of this training project, via the Kirkpatrick evaluation model. Methods A total of trainees (n = 84) were invited as the research objects. The effects of the EMI training project implemented in KMU were evaluated in terms of the reaction, learning, and behavior dimensions based on the Kirkpatrick model. The self-administered online anonymous questionnaires and observations of participants’ EMI lectures were administered to all participants to collect the data. Furthermore, to understand participants’ perceptions of the management and trainers of the training project, some open-ended questions were required to answer. Results Based on 1–3 level of the Kirkpatrick model, all participants were highly satisfied with the EMI training implementation on the reaction level, and expressed positive comments about the management of the training and trainers. On the learning level, participants’ scores on awareness of EMI teaching techniques increased significantly(t = 7.122, P Conclusion The findings of this study confirm that EMI training has an effective impact on the competence and confidence of participants as EMI instructors at levels 1–3 of the Kirkpatrick evaluation model. This training may be a potentially beneficial effect on the teaching quality of MBBS education.

Background Multiple preclinical studies have reported a beneficial effect of extracellular vesicles (EVs), especially mesenchymal stem cells derived EVs (MSC-EVs), in the treatment of sepsis. However, the therapeutic effect of EVs is still not universally recognized. Therefore, we conducted this meta-analysis by summarizing data from all published studies that met certain criteria to systematically review the association between EVs treatment and mortality in animal models of sepsis. Methods Systematic retrieval of all studies in PubMed, Cochrane and Web of Science that reported the effects of EVs on sepsis models up to September 2022. The primary outcome was animal mortality. After screening the eligible articles according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, the inverse variance method of fixed effect model was used to calculate the joint odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Meta-analysis was performed by RevMan version 5.4. Results In total, 17 studies met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis of those studies showed that EVs treatment was associated with reduced mortality in animal models of sepsis (OR 0.17 95% CI: 0.11,0.26, P Conclusion This meta-analysis showed that MSC-EVs treatment may be associated with lower mortality in animal models of sepsis. Subsequent preclinical studies will need to address the standardization of dose, source, and timing of EVs to provide comparable data. In addition, the effectiveness of EVs in treating sepsis must be studied in large animal studies to provide important clues for human clinical trials.

Heart failure (HF) patients in general have a higher risk of developing cancer. Several animal studies have indicated that cardiac remodeling and HF remarkably accelerate tumor progression, highlighting a cause-and-effect relationship between these two disease entities. Targeting ferroptosis, a prevailing form of non-apoptotic cell death, has been considered a promising therapeutic strategy for human cancers. Exosomes critically contribute to proximal and distant organ-organ communications and play crucial roles in regulating diseases in a paracrine manner. However, whether exosomes control the sensitivity of cancer to ferroptosis via regulating the cardiomyocyte-tumor cell crosstalk in ischemic HF has not yet been explored. Here, we demonstrate that myocardial infarction (MI) decreased the sensitivity of cancer cells to the canonical ferroptosis activator erastin or imidazole ketone erastin in a mouse model of xenograft tumor. Post-MI plasma exosomes potently blunted the sensitivity of tumor cells to ferroptosis inducers both in vitro in mouse Lewis lung carcinoma cell line LLC and osteosarcoma cell line K7M2 and in vivo with xenograft tumorigenesis model. The expression of miR-22-3p in cardiomyocytes and plasma-exosomes was significantly upregulated in the failing hearts of mice with chronic MI and of HF patients as well. Incubation of tumor cells with the exosomes isolated from post-MI mouse plasma or overexpression of miR-22-3p alone abrogated erastin-induced ferroptotic cell death in vitro. Cardiomyocyte-enriched miR-22-3p was packaged in exosomes and transferred into tumor cells. Inhibition of cardiomyocyte-specific miR-22-3p by AAV9 sponge increased the sensitivity of cancer cells to ferroptosis. ACSL4, a pro-ferroptotic gene, was experimentally established as a target of miR-22-3p in tumor cells. Taken together, our findings uncovered for the first time that MI suppresses erastin-induced ferroptosis through releasing miR-22-3p-enriched exosomes derived from cardiomyocytes. Therefore, targeting exosome-mediated cardiomyocyte/tumor pathological communication may offer a novel approach for the ferroptosis-based antitumor therapy.

Background Maternal obesity is the most common medical condition among women of reproductive age worldwide. The pre-pregnancy body mass index and gestational weight gain have been suggested to be associated with maternal mental disorders. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the pre-pregnancy body mass index and gestational weight gain on antenatal depression, stress, and anxiety. Methods In total, 4,890 pregnant women were enrolled in the present study, which is based on an ongoing prospective cohort study. We used self-reported pre-pregnancy weights and the last weights measured prior to delivery (using professional instruments) to calculate the pre-pregnancy body mass index and gestational weight gain. The questionnaires used included the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and 10-item version of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10). We used Pearson product-moment correlation and multivariable logistic regression models to examine the impact of the pre-pregnancy body mass index and gestational weight gain on different maternal mental disorders. Results After adjusting for conception, annual household income, occupation, education, smoking status, and drinking status, excessive gestational weight gain during pregnancy was associated with a greater chance of anxiety symptoms in the entire sample (adjusted model: odds ratio = 1.479, 95% confidence interval = 1.128, 1.938) and especially in women with a normal body mass index (adjusted model: odds ratio = 1.668, 95% confidence interval = 1.209, 2.302). However, the relationship between the maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index and mental health was not significant. Conclusion Pregnant women with a normal pre-pregnancy body mass index had a greater chance of experiencing anxiety symptoms before delivery if gestational weight gain was excessive; however, its effects on depression or stress symptoms were not observed. The maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index may not be independently associated with maternal mental disorders.

Encapsulation engineering is an effective strategy to improve the stability of perovskite solar cells. However, current encapsulation materials are not suitable for lead-based devices because of their complex encapsulation processes, poor thermal management, and inefficient lead leakage suppression. In this work, we design a self-crosslinked fluorosilicone polymer gel, achieving nondestructive encapsulation at room temperature. Moreover, the proposed encapsulation strategy effectively promotes heat transfer and mitigates the potential impact of heat accumulation. As a result, the encapsulated devices maintain 98% of the normalized power conversion efficiency after 1000 h in the damp heat test and retain 95% of the normalized efficiency after 220 cycles in the thermal cycling test, satisfying the requirements of the International Electrotechnical Commission 61215 standard. The encapsulated devices also exhibit excellent lead leakage inhibition rates, 99% in the rain test and 98% in the immersion test, owing to excellent glass protection and strong coordination interaction. Our strategy provides a universal and integrated solution for achieving efficient, stable, and sustainable perovskite photovoltaics.

Background Asthma is a heterogeneous disease with high morbidity. Advancement in high-throughput multi-omics approaches has enabled the collection of molecular assessments at different layers, providing a complementary perspective of complex diseases. Numerous computational methods have been developed for the omics-based patient classification or disease outcome prediction. Yet, a systematic benchmarking of those methods using various combinations of omics data for the prediction of asthma development is still lacking. Objective We aimed to investigate the computational methods in disease status prediction using multi-omics data. Method We systematically benchmarked 18 computational methods using all the 63 combinations of six omics data (GWAS, miRNA, mRNA, microbiome, metabolome, DNA methylation) collected in The Vitamin D Antenatal Asthma Reduction Trial (VDAART) cohort. We evaluated each method using standard performance metrics for each of the 63 omics combinations. Results Our results indicate that overall Logistic Regression, Multi-Layer Perceptron, and MOGONET display superior performance, and the combination of transcriptional, genomic and microbiome data achieves the best prediction. Moreover, we find that including the clinical data can further improve the prediction performance for some but not all the omics combinations. Conclusions Specific omics combinations can reach the optimal prediction of asthma development in children. And certain computational methods showed superior performance than other methods.

Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has had a widespread and profound impact on people’s mental health. The factors associated with mental symptoms among men diagnosed with infertility, a disease closely related to psychological conditions, remain unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate the risk factors associated with mental symptoms among infertile Chinese men during the pandemic. Results A total of 4,098 eligible participants were recruited in this cross-sectional, nationwide study, including 2,034 (49.6%) with primary infertility and 2,064 (50.4%) with secondary infertility. The prevalence of mental health conditions was 36.3%, 39.6%, and 6.7% for anxiety, depression, and post-pandemic stress, respectively. Sexual dysfunction is associated with a higher risk with adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of 1.40 for anxiety, 1.38 for depression, and 2.32 for stress. Men receiving infertility drug therapy displayed a higher risk for anxiety (adjusted OR, 1.31) and depression (adjusted OR, 1.28) symptoms, while those receiving intrauterine insemination had a lower risk of anxiety (adjusted OR, 0.56) and depression (adjusted OR, 0.55) symptoms. Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant psychological impact on infertile men. Several psychologically vulnerable populations were identified, including individuals with sexual dysfunction, respondents receiving infertility drug therapy, and those experiencing control measures for COVID-19. The findings provide a comprehensive profile of the mental health status of infertile Chinese men during the COVID-19 outbreak and provide potential psychological intervention strategies.

Selenium is an essential trace element that shows beneficial or adverse health effects depending on the dose. However, its role in the prognosis of cervical cancer (CC) has been less reported. We aimed to explore the association between selenium status and prognosis in CC patients with different prognoses and to elucidate the underlying mechanism of selenium in CC prognosis. This cross-sectional observational study had a case-control design at the Harbin Medical University Cancer Hospital and was conducted using 29 CC cases with poor prognosis and 29 CC cases with good prognosis. Plasma selenium levels were measured using an atomic fluorescence spectrometer. Untargeted metabolomics was used to identify metabolites. Plasma selenium levels of the poor prognosis group (49.90 ± 13.81 µg/L) were lower than that of the good prognosis group (59.38 ± 13.00 µg/L, t = 2.69, P = 0.009). In the logistic regression analysis, plasma selenium levels were associated with lower poor prognosis risk [odds ratio (OR) = 0.952, 95% CI: 0.909-0.998]. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed an optimal cut-off point of plasma selenium levels ≤ 47.68 µg/L for poor prognosis of CC. Based on the cut-off selenium levels, patients with different prognoses were divided into high and low selenium groups. Metabolomic analysis revealed six differential metabolites among different prognoses with low and high selenium levels, and the glycerophospholipid (GPL) metabolism was enriched. Plasma selenium levels were positively correlated with metabolite levels. Our findings provided evidence that low plasma selenium levels may associate with a poor prognosis of CC. Low plasma selenium levels might suppress GPL metabolism and influence the prognosis of CC. This finding requires confirmation in future prospective cohort studies.

Spasticity is a typical consequence after spinal cord injury (SCI). The critical reasons are reducing the synthesis of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA), glycine and potassium chloride co-transporter 2 (KCC2) inside the distal spinal cord. The current work aimed to test whether exercise training could increase the expression of glutamic acid decarboxylase 65/67 (GAD-65/67, the key enzymes in GABA synthesis) and KCC2 in the distal spinal cord via tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB) signaling. The experimental rats were randomly assigned to the following five groups: Sham, SCI/phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), SCI-treadmill training (TT)/PBS, SCI/TrkB-IgG, and SCI-TT/TrkB-IgG. After that, the model of T10 contusion SCI was used, then TrkB-IgG was used to prevent TrkB activity at 7 days post-SCI. Body weight-supported treadmill training started on the 8th day post-SCI for four weeks. The Hmax/Mmax ratio and the rate-dependent depression of H-reflex were used to assess the excitability of spinal motoneuronal networks. Western blotting and Immunohistochemistry techniques were utilized for measuring the expression of GAD-65, GAD-67, and KCC2. The findings revealed that exercise training could reduce motoneuronal excitability and boost GAD-65, GAD-67, and KCC2 production in the distal region of the spinal cord after SCI. The effects of exercise training were decreased after the TrkB signaling was inhibited. The present exploration demonstrated that exercise training increases GAD-65, GAD-67, and KCC2 expression in the spinal cord via TrkB signaling and that this method could also improve rats with motoneuronal hyperexcitability and spasticity induced by incomplete SCI.

Neuroinflammation is closely related to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. Activation of microglia, the resident immune cells in CNS, induces inflammatory responses, resulting in the release of neurotoxic molecules, which favors neuronal death and neurodegeneration. Nuclear receptor-related 1 (Nurr1) protein, one of the orphan nuclear receptor superfamilies, is an emerging target for neuroprotective therapy. In addition, the anti-inflammatory function of cannabinoid (CB) receptors has attracted increasing interest. As both CB receptors (especially CB2 receptor) and Nurr1 exist in microglia, and regulate a number of same molecular points such as NF-κB, we herein explored the interplay between the CB2 receptor and Nurr1 as well as the regulatory mechanisms in microglial cells. We showed that the application of CB2 receptor agonists JWH015 (1, 10 μM) significantly increased the nuclear Nurr1 protein in BV-2 cells and primary midbrain microglia. Overexpression of Nurr1 or application of Nurr1 agonist C-DIM12 (10 μM) significantly increased the mRNA level of CB2 receptor in BV-2 cells, suggesting that positive expression feedback existing between the CB2 receptor and Nurr1. After 2-AG and JWH015 activated the CB2 receptors, the levels of p-ERK, p-AKT, p-GSK-3β in BV-2 cells were significantly increased. Using ERK1/2 inhibitor U0126 and PI3K/AKT inhibitor LY294002, we revealed that the amount of Nurr1 in the nucleus was upregulated through β-arrestin2/ERK1/2 and PI3K/AKT/GSK-3β signaling pathways. With these inhibitors, we found a cross-talk interaction between the two pathways, and the ERK1/2 signaling pathway played a more dominant regulatory role. Furthermore, we demonstrated that when the CB2 receptor was activated, the phagocytic function of BV-2 cells was significantly weakened; the activation of Nurr1 also inhibited the phagocytic function of BV-2 cells. Pretreatment with the signaling pathway inhibitors, especially U0126, reversed the inhibitory effect of 2-AG on phagocytosis, suggesting that CB2 receptor may regulate the phagocytic function of microglia by activating Nurr1. In conclusion, CB2 receptor or/and Nurr1-mediated signal pathways play instrumental roles in the progress of phagocytosis, which are expected to open up new treatment strategies for neurodegenerative diseases.
