Emotion can be influenced during self-isolation, and to avoid severe mood swings, emotional regulation is meaningful. To achieve this, efficiently recognizing emotion is a vital step, which can be realized by electroencephalography signals. Previously, inspired by the knowledge of sequencing in bioinformatics, a method termed brain rhythm sequencing that analyzes electroencephalography as the sequence consisting of the dominant rhythm has been proposed for seizure detection. In this work, with the help of similarity measure methods, the asymmetric features are extracted from the sequences generated by different channel data. After evaluating all asymmetric features for emotion recognition, the optimal feature that yields remarkable accuracy is identified. Therefore, the classification task can be accomplished through a small amount of channel data. From a music emotion recognition experiment and a public DEAP dataset, the classification accuracies of various test sets are approximately 80-85% when employing an optimal feature extracted from one pair of symmetrical channels. Such performances are impressive when using fewer resources is a concern. Further investigation revealed that emotion recognition shows strongly individual characteristics, so an appropriate solution is to include the subject-dependent properties. Compared to the existing works, this method benefits from the design of a portable emotion-aware device used during self-isolation, as fewer scalp sensors are needed. Hence, it would provide a novel way to realize emotional applications in the future.

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are involved in cancer recurrence and metastasis owing to their self-renewal properties and drug-resistance capacity. Lipocalin-2 (Lcn2) of the lipocalin superfamily is highly expressed in pancreatic cancer. Nevertheless, reports on the involvement of Lcn2 in the regulation of pancreatic CSC properties are scant. This study is purposed to investigate whether Lcn2 plays a crucial role in CSC renewal and stemness maintenance in pancreatic carcinoma. Immunohistochemistry results of tumor tissue chips together with Gene Expression Omnibus sequencing files confirmed that Lcn2 is highly expressed in pancreatic carcinoma compared with that in normal tissues. The exogenous expression of Lcn2 attenuated CSC-associated SOX2, CD44, and EpCAM expression and suppressed sarcosphere formation and tumorigenesis in the pancreatic carcinoma cell line PANC-1, which showed low expression of Lcn2. However, Lcn2 knockout in BxPC-3 cell line, which presented high Lcn2 expression, promoted CSC stemness, further enhancing sarcosphere formation and tumorigenesis. Moreover, Lcn2 was found to regulate stemness in pancreatic cancer depending on the activation of AKT and c-Jun. Lcn2 suppresses stemness properties in pancreatic carcinoma by activating the AKT-c-Jun pathway, and thus, it may be a novel candidate to suppress the stemness of pancreatic cancer. This study provides a new insight into disease progression.

In order to more accurately assess the pedestrian level of service (PLOS) of crosswalks and to more rationally design the pedestrian signal timing, a method of calculating the standard pedestrian equivalent (SPE) factors at the signalized crosswalk in China was proposed in this study by considering the differences in static and dynamic characteristics amongst pedestrians. Firstly, the pedestrians were classified into five types using the pedestrian field data collected at the 3 signalized crosswalks in Chongqing, China. Then, by considering the parameters selection of the pedestrian LOS at signalized crosswalks, the SPE method based on pedestrian delays was derived, and the calculation models of pedestrian delays were presented for different pedestrian arrival patterns. A case analysis was conducted using the methods proposed in this paper, and the results show that the SPE values for minors, young and middle-aged females, elderly males and elderly females were 1.213, 1.067, 1.229 and 1.348, respectively. In addition, the results of the in-situ application to the pedestrian signal timing at the signalized crosswalk were achieved. This research can provide reference for practice related to transportation fields such as pedestrian capacity analysis and pedestrian signal timing design.

Measuring the spread of disease during a pandemic is critically important for accurately and promptly applying various lockdown strategies, so to prevent the collapse of the medical system. The latest pandemic of COVID-19 that hits the world death tolls and economy loss very hard, is more complex and contagious than its precedent diseases. The complexity comes mostly from the emergence of asymptomatic patients and relapse of the recovered patients which were not commonly seen during SARS outbreaks. These new characteristics pertaining to COVID-19 were only discovered lately, adding a level of uncertainty to the traditional SEIR models. The contribution of this paper is that for the COVID-19 epidemic, which is infectious in both the incubation period and the onset period, we use neural networks to learn from the actual data of the epidemic to obtain optimal parameters, thereby establishing a nonlinear, self-adaptive dynamic coefficient infectious disease prediction model. On the basis of prediction, we considered control measures and simulated the effects of different control measures and different strengths of the control measures. The epidemic control is predicted as a continuous change process, and the epidemic development and control are integrated to simulate and forecast. Decision-making departments make optimal choices. The improved model is applied to simulate the COVID-19 epidemic in the United States, and by comparing the prediction results with the traditional SEIR model, SEAIRD model and adaptive SEAIRD model, it is found that the adaptive SEAIRD model's prediction results of the U.S. COVID-19 epidemic data are in good agreement with the actual epidemic curve. For example, from the prediction effect of these 3 different models on accumulative confirmed cases, in terms of goodness of fit, adaptive SEAIRD model (0.99997) approximate to SEAIRD model (0.98548) > Classical SEIR model (0.66837); in terms of error value: adaptive SEAIRD model (198.6563) < < SEAIRD model(4739.8577) < < Classical SEIR model (22,652.796); The objective of this contribution is mainly on extending the current spread prediction model. It incorporates extra compartments accounting for the new features of COVID-19, and fine-tunes the new model with neural network, in a bid of achieving a higher level of prediction accuracy. Based on the SEIR model of disease transmission, an adaptive model called SEAIRD with internal source and isolation intervention is proposed. It simulates the effects of the changing behaviour of the SARS-CoV-2 in U.S. Neural network is applied to achieve a better fit in SEAIRD. Unlike the SEIR model, the adaptive SEAIRD model embraces multi-group dynamics which lead to different evolutionary trends during the epidemic. Through the risk assessment indicators of the adaptive SEAIRD model, it is convenient to measure the severity of the epidemic situation for consideration of different preventive measures. Future scenarios are projected from the trends of various indicators by running the adaptive SEAIRD model.

Pre-stressed bolt anchorage is the key technology for jointed rock masses in rock tunnelling, slope treatment and mining engineering. To investigate the mechanical properties and reinforcement effect of jointed rock masses with pre-stressed bolts, in this study, uniaxial compression tests were conducted on specimens with different anchoring types and flaw inclination angles. ABAQUS software was used to verify and supplement the laboratory tests. The laws of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) obtained from the numerical simulations and laboratory tests were consistent. The results showed that under the same flaw angle, both the UCS and elastic modulus of the bolted specimens were improved compared with those of the specimens without bolts and the improvements increased with an increase in the bolt pre-stress. Under the same anchoring type, the UCS and elastic modulus of the jointed specimens increased with an increase in the flaw angle. The pre-stressed bolt could not only restrain the slip of the specimens along the flaw surface but also change the propagation mode of the secondary cracks and limit the initiation of cracks. In addition, the plot contours of the maximum principal strain and the Tresca stress of the numerical models were influenced by the anchoring type, flaw angle, anchoring angle and bolt position.

In the past two decades, purinergic signaling has emerged as a key regulator of hematopoiesis in physiological and pathological conditions. ADP receptor P2y12 is a crucial component of this signaling, but whether it is involved in primitive hematopoiesis remains unknown. To elucidate the function of P2y12 and provide new insights for drug development, we established a zebrafish P2y12 mutant by CRISPR/Cas 9-based genetic modification system, and investigated whether P2y12 acted as an important regulator for primitive hematopoiesis. By using mass spectrometry (MS) combined with RNA sequencing, we showed that absence of P2y12 induced excessive erythropoiesis, evidenced by significantly increased expression of mature erythrocytes marker α-globin (Hbae1 and Hbae3), β-globin (Hbbe1 and Hbbe3). Expression pattern analysis showed that P2y12 was mainly expressed in red blood cells and endothelial cells of early zebrafish embryos. Further studies revealed that primitive erythroid progenitor marker Gata1 was markedly up-regulated. Remarkably, inhibition of Gata1 by injection of Gata1 morpholino could rescue the erythroid abnormality in P2y12 mutants. The present study demonstrates the essential role of purinergic signaling in differentiation of proerythrocytes during primitive hematopoiesis, and provides potential targets for treatment of blood-related disease and drug development.

With the expansion of the power grid scale and the enhancement of network structure interconnection, the short-circuit current of power grids is increasingly close to the upper capacity limit of circuit breakers. The fault current limiter is effective in suppressing the short-circuit current of power grids, and with the mature development of superconducting technology, high-temperature superconducting fault current limiters (HTS-FCLs) have been widely used in power grids. Due to the nonlinear impedance–current characteristic of HTS-FCLs, the traditional short-circuit current calculation method is inapplicable to power grids with HTS-FCLs. First, based on the establishment of the electromechanical transient model and the short-circuit calculation model, the short-circuit current calculation procedure for power grids with HTS-FCLs is proposed. Second, the calculation methods for three-phase and single-phase short-circuit currents at the substation bus in power grids with HTS-FCLs are analyzed. Finally, three-phase and single-phase short-circuit currents at the 500 kV Xijiang substation bus in the Guangdong power grid are calculated as the study case. Simulation results show that compared with the situation where there is no HTS-FCL installed, the short-circuit current on the 500 kV bus decreases from 65.34 to 58.31 kA in terms of the three-phase short-circuit fault, and decreases from 54.56 to 46.62 kA in terms of the single-phase short-circuit fault, thus verifying the effectiveness and practicability of HTS-FCLs in suppressing the short-circuit current, which is significant for the safe, stable and reliable operation of the power grid.

Standardized prevalence of osteoporosis was 19.90% in the whole subjects aged between 50 and 87, 5.87% in men and 30.23% in women respectively. Risk factors associated with osteoporosis were analyzed. It is the first time to estimate the prevalence and characterize the epidemiology of osteoporosis in Chongqing, China. To investigate bone mineral density (BMD) profiles, osteoporosis prevalence, and its risk factors among residents aged above 20 years old in Chongqing Municipality, China. The study population consisted of 770 men and 1085 women aged 20 years and older with BMD measurements using central dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Information on sociodemographic characteristics and the potential risk factors associated with osteoporosis were collected by a standardized interviewer-administered questionnaire. Crude prevalence of osteoporosis was 12.99% in the whole subjects, 4.42% for men, and 19.08% for women by WHO criteria at various skeletal regions (among lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total hip). Standardized prevalence of osteoporosis was 19.90% in the whole subjects aged between 50 and 87, 5.87% in men and 30.23% in women respectively. Prevalence of osteoporosis increased with age, and the prevalence of osteoporosis in women was 6.10 times higher than it in men. The prevalence of osteoporosis was significantly associated with the past medical history of fracture (OR = 1.794, P = 0.007); overweight and obesity were considered to be protective factors for osteoporosis with OR of 0.514 and 0.300, respectively; high school graduate (OR = 0.399, P = 0.000 ) and milk intake (OR = 0.648, P = 0.008) were also protective factors for osteoporosis in men and women considered together; menopause was an independent risk factor of osteoporosis in females (OR = 1.782, P = 0.029); current smoking was an independent risk factor of osteoporosis in males (OR = 2.437, P = 0.046). The prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia was high among residents in Chongqing, China. Health education and behavior intervention should be focused on the elderly or female residents to promote the formulation of healthy lifestyle. Necessary steps are needed for more public education and a wider dissemination of information about osteoporosis and its prevention.

Background Modern breeding in the poultry industry mainly aims to produce high-performance poultry lines and breeds in two main directions of productivity, meat and eggs. To understand more about the productive potential of lowly selected Chinese native chicken populations, we selected 14 representative SNP markers strongly associated with growth traits or carcass traits and 14 SNP markers strongly associated with egg laying traits through previous reports. By using the MassArray technology, we detected the genotype frequency distributions of these 28 SNP markers in seven populations including four lowly selected as well as one moderately selected Sichuan native chicken populations, one commercial broiler line and one commercial layer line. Results Based on the genotype frequency distributions of these 28 SNP markers in 5 native chicken populations and 2 commercial lines, the results suggested that these Chinese indigenous chicken populations have a relatively close relationship with the commercial broiler line but a marked distinction from the commercial layer line. Two native chicken breeds, Shimian Caoke Chicken and Daheng Broilers, share similar genetic structure with the broiler line. Conclusions Our observations may help us to better select and breed superior domestic chickens and provide new clues for further study of breeding programs in local chicken populations.

Due to the lack of typical clinical symptoms, the average delay time for diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension (PH) is longer than 2 years. It is urgent to find biomarkers for PH diagnosis. In this study we investigated whether plasma microRNAs (miRNAs) can be used as biomarkers for PH diagnosis. We used microarray to identify dynamic miRNAs between PH and non-PH patients. The candidate miRNAs were verified using qRT-PCR in a mouse model of PH, which was induced by monocrotaline (MCT) injection. We observed that miR-21, miR-126, miR-145, miR-191 and miR-150 had no differences between control mice and MCT-treated mice; but plasma miR-451 was significantly decreased in the 2wk-MCT group, with no further decrease in the 4wk-MCT group. Plasma miR-451 was also markedly decreased in PH patients, whereas miR-21, miR-126, miR-150 and miR-320 did not show differences between 53 PH patients and 54 non-PH patients. Receiver operating characteristic curves (ROCs) were constructed from the patient data to assess the clinical diagnostic values of circulating miR-451 and Doppler echocardiography (D-ECHO). The areas under the curve (AUCs) of ROCs for miR-451 and D-ECHO were 0.710 and 0.766, respectively. Combination of miR-451 and D-ECHO with AUC of 0.825 was superior to the use of either miR-451 or D-ECHO alone for PH diagnosis. In conclusion, plasma miR-451 has a moderate diagnostic value in PH comparable to that of D-ECHO, and the combination of miR-451 with D-ECHO has better diagnostic value than either method alone, which may have implications for PH diagnosis.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) play key roles in plant growth and development, and regulate various agricultural traits. Enhanced BR signaling leads to increased seed number and yield in Arabidopsis bzr1-1D (AtBZR1P234L, gain-of-function mutant of the important transcription factor in BR signaling/effects). BR signal transduction pathway is well elucidated in Arabidopsis but less known in other species. Soybean is an important dicot crop producing edible oil and protein. Phylogenetic analysis reveals AtBZR1-like genes are highly conserved in angiosperm and there are 4 orthologues in soybean (GmBZL1-4). We here report the functional characterization of GmBZL2 (relatively highly expresses in flowers). The P234 site in AtBZR1 is conserved in GmBZL2 (P216) and mutation of GmBZL2P216L leads to GmBZL2 accumulation. GmBZL2P216L (GmBZL2*) in Arabidopsis results in enhanced BR signaling; including increased seed number per silique. GmBZL2* partially rescued the defects of bri1-5, further demonstrating the conserved function of GmBZL2 with AtBZR1. BR treatment promotes the accumulation, nuclear localization and dephosphorylation/phosphorylation ratio of GmBZL2, revealing that GmBZL2 activity is regulated conservatively by BR signaling. Our studies not only indicate the conserved regulatory mechanism of GmBZL2 and BR signaling pathway in soybean, but also suggest the potential application of GmBZL2 in soybean seed yield.

Resveratrol has attracted considerable public and scientific attention because of its beneficial effects on human health. In this study, resveratrol was encapsulated into chitosan microspheres for improving the stability and evaluating the ability of controlled release. Chitosan microspheres were prepared by using an emulsification-crosslinking method, and specifically, a natural extraction genipin was used as crosslinking agent for pursuit better physiological compatibility. Factors which influence on the shape and dispersity of microspheres were investigated to optimize the preparing process of resveratrol loaded genipin-chitosanmicrospheres. The optimum condition was obtained and the prepared resveratrol loaded genipin-chitosanmicrospheres were characterized by many technical instruments. Entrapment efficiency of resveratrol in genipin-chitosanmicrospheres is up to 87.6 %, and loading capacity is 7.9 %. The in vitro release rate in pH 3.6 buffer solution reached to 33.8 % within 72 h, but was lower in pH 7.4 buffer solution.
