Outbreaks of Asynapta groverae, an invasive mycophagous gall midge, in South Korea have been repeatedly reported since the first occurrence in 2008. This species is a nuisance to residents owing to its mass emergence from newly built and furnished apartments. Here, the levels of genetic diversity, divergence, and structure of invasive A. groverae populations were investigated to understand their ability to survive in novel locations. Population genetic analyses were performed on seven invasive populations, including the first outbreak, sporadically emerged, and two laboratory-isolated (quarantined) populations, using the mitochondrial COI sequences and the ten novel microsatellite markers developed in this study. Non-indigenous A. groverae managed to maintain their populations for 12 years despite decreased genetic polymorphisms resulting from multiple incidences of founder effects by a small number of colonists. Additionally, the advantageous sustainability of A. groverae in the particle boards from which they emerge suggests that human-mediated dispersal is plausible, which may allow for the successful spread or invasion of A. groverae to new locations. This study is one of the few examples to demonstrate that an insect species successfully invaded new regions despite exhibiting decreased genetic diversity that was maintained for a decade. These findings indicate that the high genetic diversity of the initial founding population and asexual reproduction would contribute to the successful invasion of A. groverae in novel environments.

The potential of mayfly Ephemera orientalis McLachlan eggs and first-instar larvae in ecotoxicological testing was investigated. Both stages of E. orientalis showed high tolerance to various environmental variables, such as water temperature, pH, water hardness, and dissolved organic carbon. Toxicological assays were conducted with three insecticides (emamectin benzoate, endosulfan, and cypermethrin), one fungicide (mancozeb), and one herbicide (paraquat dichloride). The two toxicity endpoints for the assay were the 14-day egg median hatching rate (EHC50) in static and renewal exposure systems and 24-h median larval mortality (LC50). Cypermethrin was the most toxic to both eggs (EHC50 in static system = 36.9 μg/L; EHC50 in renewal system

Aquatic insect communities were investigated from the Muonghoa Stream in the Sapa Highland (highest peak 3,143 m), a subtropical mountain stream in northern Vietnam. Field investigations for quantitative (Surber net 50 cm × 50 cm, mesh size 0.2 mm, riffle and pool/run) and qualitative (hand net, mesh size 1 mm) sampling were conducted at nine sites along the watercourse between 27 November and 2 December 2005. As a result, a total of 216 species (the majority of them undescribed) belonging to 139 genera, 61 families, and nine orders were recognized: 53 Ephemeroptera species (24.5%), nine Odonata species (4.2%), 15 Plecoptera species (6.9%), seven Hemiptera species (3.2%), 35 Coleoptera species (16.2%), one Megaloptera species (0.5%), 29 Diptera species (13.4%), 66 Trichoptera species (30.6%), and one Lepidoptera species (0.5%). Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera, and Coleoptera represented the major aquatic insect groups with regard to taxonomic and individual richness, whereas Hemiptera and Odonata were relatively less diverse and abundant than in studies of other tropical Southeast Asian streams. The dominance, richness, and diversity indices (H′) fell within the following ranges [mean ± standard deviation (SD)]: 0.18–0.76 (0.42 ± 0.19), 4.13–9.19 (7.06 ± 1.45), and 1.61–3.22 (2.67 ± 0.55), respectively. Riffle habitats generally yielded numbers of aquatic insect species and individuals approximately twice that sampled in pool/run habitats. Shredders were relatively larger in proportion within the headwater reach, whereas scrapers and collector-gatherers were more abundant in the middle and lower stream reaches. This functional feeding group composition is characteristic of temperate streams in East Asia. The results of detrended correspondence analysis and Bray–Curtis cluster analysis indicated that aquatic insect compositions at the sampling sites were very reflective of the reach characteristics, which evidence gradual changes with altitude and stream order along the stream watercourse. This is the first comprehensive investigation of aquatic insects in highland Southeast Asian regions.

Life history aspects of Ephemera orientalis, a common lowland burrowing mayfly that resides in temperate East Asia, were studied in terms of voltinism, secondary production, and accumulated degree days for larval development. From March 1998 to June 1999, larvae were sampled monthly (weekly or biweekly during the emergence period) from a lower reach of the Gapyeong stream in Korea, a stream typical of temperate East Asia, using a Surber sampler (0.25 m2, mesh 0.25 mm). As a result, the mean density of E. orientalis was 47.21 ± 13.58 indiv. m−2 during the study period. Very small larvae less than 2 mm in body length were sampled on three separate occasions, and emergence was observed between late April and early October, except during late May. Based on the larval body length distribution and emergence time, two different developmental groups could be distinguished: the slow developmental group (S-group) and the fast developmental group (F-group). The F-group completed its life cycle within 4 months, whereas the S-group had a one-year life cycle. The S-group could be divided into two subgroups, dubbed the S1 and S2-groups, based on larval development. The developmental groups alternate their life cycles in the order: S1→F→S2→S1. Estimated annual production of the larvae was 68.81 mg DW m−2 y−1; mean biomass was 8.43 mg DW m−2; the annual production to mean biomass ratio was 8.16. The annual mean water temperature of the study year was 14.76 ± 6.63°C. The total accumulated degree days for larval development was 1396°C for the F-group, 2,055°C for the S1-group, and 1,975°C for the S2-group. Two different adult body size groups were distinguished (P < 0.001 by t-test): larger adults, which belonged to the S-group, were present throughout the emergence period, whereas smaller adults, which belonged to the F-group, were mainly present later in the emergence period (August–October). The difference in the accumulated degree days between the developmental groups may explain the size differences of adults.

A comparative investigation on aquatic insect diversity was conducted in a tropical stream in Southeast Asia (the Dak Pri stream in southern Vietnam; stream orders II–V, two sites per stream order) with a reference temperate stream in Northeast Asia (the Gapyeong stream in central Korea) in March 2001 and April 2000, respectively. The numbers of aquatic insect taxa in Dak Pri stream (268 species, mostly undescribed, 230 genera, 91 families, and 9 orders; 110.5 ± 17.1 species per site) were about twice those in Gapyeong stream (133 species, 98 genera, 51 families, and 8 orders; 60.3 ± 8.5 species per site). Coleoptera, Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera, and Diptera were the major aquatic insect orders with high taxonomic richness, and Coleoptera, Odonata, and Hemiptera contributed to the higher degree of aquatic insect diversity in Dak Pri stream. The species diversity indices of Dak Pri stream (4.37 ± 0.19) were higher than those of Gapyeong stream (3.73 ± 0.42), whereas the dominance indices of Dak Pri stream (0.195 ± 0.046) were lower than those of Gapyeong stream (0.346 ± 0.113). Collector-gatherers were predominant in both streams; shredders were more abundant in Dak Pri stream while scrapers were more abundant in Gapyeong stream. Factors affecting the higher degree of aquatic insect diversity in Dak Pri stream are discussed.

Biomonitoring is the use of biological responses of populations and communities of certain indicator organisms to evaluate mainly anthropogenic environmental changes. Stream ecosystem biomonitoring using benthic macroin vertebrates is reviewed from a historical perspective. Case studies are provided from the biomonitoring and restoration projects in the Han River system: main watercourse of the Han River, Cheonggye-cheon, Jungnang-cheon, Wangsuk-cheon, and Gapyeong-cheon. From the case studies as well as other various biomonitoring projects conducted in Korea, respresentative benthic macroinvertebrate groups, which are use ful for the biomonitoring and restoration programs in Korean streams, are suggested with a list of endangered, rare, and ecoenvironmentally valuable species of freshwater arthropods.

We investigated the effects of road deicer runoff on benthic macroinvertebrate communities in Korean freshwaters focusing on the effects of CaCl2 deicer. Quantitative field sampling was conducted at eight sites (lakes and streams) in South Korea, and toxicity tests were conducted on 48-h lethal and effective concentrations (LC50 and EC50) of road deicer (CaCl2 74 %) and high-grade CaCl2 (96 %) on five selected macroinvertebrate species (Gammarus sobaegensis, Caridina denticulata denticulata, Glyptotendipes tokunagai, Cloeon dipterum, and Ecdyonurus levis). Although Cl− concentrations were significantly different between the seasons (before and after snowfall) at most of the study sites, community values (species richness, density, dominance index, and diversity index) were not significantly different between the seasons. In the bioassay, 2.85 g L−1 CaCl2 elicited abnormal swimming behavior of test organisms based on EC50 values. The LC50 values of the five test species ranged from 3.54 to 20.73 g L−1. For all tested species, the LC50 of road deicer was higher than that of high-grade CaCl2. This study shows that despite the heavy application of road deicers during the snowy season, the deicer may not directly affect benthic macroinvertebrate communities over short time periods because Cl− concentrations in the field sites (
