Purpose Programmed death-1 (PDCD-1) and lymphocyte activating 3 (LAG3), two important immunosuppressive molecules, play crucial roles in immune escape of tumor cells. This study evaluated the effects of PDCD-1 (rs10204525 and rs36084323), and LAG3 (rs870849 and rs1882545) gene polymorphisms on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk. Methods 341 patients with HCC and 350 cancer-free controls in the South Chinese population were included in a population-based case-control study. DNAs were extracted from peripheral blood samples. Genotypes were analyzed using multiplex PCR and sequencing. SNPs were analyzed using multiple inheritance models (co-dominant, dominant, recessive, and over-dominant). Results The allele and genotype frequencies of neither of the four polymorphisms, adjusted for age and gender, differed between HCC patients and controls. The differences were also not significant after stratifying by gender and age. According to our results, HCC patients with rs10204525 TC genotype had significantly lower AFP levels than HCC patients with rs10204525 TT genotype (P = 0.004). Moreover, the frequency of PDCD-1 rs36084323 CT genotype reduced the risk of TNM grade (CT vs. C/C-T/T: OR = 0.57, 95%CI = 0.37–0.87, P = 0.049). Conclusion Our results demonstrated that the PDCD-1 (rs10204525 and rs36084323), and LAG3 (rs870849 and rs1882545) polymorphism did not influence the risk of HCC, PDCD-1 rs10204525 TC genotype was associated with the lower AFP levels and rs36084323 CT genotypes were related to HCC tumor grades in the South Chinese samples.

Microseismic monitoring technology has become an important technique to assess stability of rock mass in metal mines. Due to the special characteristics of underground metal mines in China, including the high tectonic stress, irregular shape and existence of ore body, and complex mining methods, the application of microseismic technology is more diverse in China compared to other countries, and is more challenging than in other underground structures such as tunnels, hydropower stations and coal mines. Apart from assessing rock mass stability and ground pressure hazards induced by mining process, blasting, water inrush and large scale goaf, microseismic technology is also used to monitor illegal mining, and track personnel location during rescue work. Moreover, microseismic data have been used to optimize mining parameters in some metal mines. The technology is increasingly used to investigate cracking mechanism in the design of rock mass supports. In this paper, the application, research development and related achievements of microseismic technology in underground metal mines in China are summarized. By considering underground mines from the perspective of informatization, automation and intelligentization, future studies should focus on intelligent microseismic data processing method, e.g., signal identification of microseismic and precise location algorithm, and on the research and development of microseismic equipment. In addition, integrated monitoring and collaborative analysis for rock mass response caused by mining disturbance will have good prospects for future development.

Aim This study investigated the effects of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors on renal outcomes in Asian patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Materials and methods We searched Medline, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library to identify randomized controlled trials published up to April 2020 that compared SGLT2 inhibitors with placebo or active comparator and reported any renal outcomes in Asian patients with T2DM. Random effects models and inverse variance weighting were used to calculate relative risks with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results We included 14 studies, totaling 3792 patients, in the analysis. In the short term, SGLT2 inhibitors significantly slowed estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decline (MD: 0.80; 95% CI: 0.66 to 0.94; p p p p = 0.11). However, dapagliflozin does appear to reduce albuminuria (p = 0.005). Lastly, SGLT2 inhibitors increased the incidence of adverse events (AEs) related to renal function (OR: 1.90; 95% CI: 1.24 to 2.91; p = 0.003), but did not increase the incidence of renal impairment (OR: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.40 to 1.81; p = 0.68). Conclusion The use of SGLT2 inhibitors in Asian patients with T2DM can help delay the decline of eGFR and reduce Scr and UA. Although SGLT2 inhibitors have no overall advantage in reducing albuminuria, dapagliflozin does appear to reduce albuminuria, and while they may increase the occurrence of AEs related to renal function, they do not increase the incidence of renal impairment.

Online customers execute transactions without inspecting products could expect to encounter risks of receiving products with unsatisfactory qualities, especially in food transactions. Thus quality supervision plays a key role in the establishment of trust as well as in the management of risk between online customers and sellers. Most papers in this field are in qualitative nature. In this paper, a quality supervision profit (QSP) model is formulated as a discrete-time optimal control problem. It is a quantitative approach, and it broadens the scope of current research in the area. The quality effort level of online sellers (QELs) and the quality supervision level of the electronic intermediary (QSLm) are considered together with their corresponding profit in the proposed model. The aim is to optimize an overall profit. A case study arising from Suichang’s food traceability system (FTS) of farm produce online transaction is carried out in details. The results reveal that QELs, QSLm and the profit distribution coefficient have a strong influence upon the profits of both sides. Finally, some concluding remarks, including potential further research topics, are given.

The evolution of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has resulted in the emergence of new variant lineages that have exacerbated the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of those variants were designated as variants of concern/interest (VOC/VOI) by national or international authorities based on many factors including their potential impact on vaccine-mediated protection from disease. To ascertain and rank the risk of VOCs and VOIs, we analyze the ability of 14 variants (614G, Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda, Mu, and Omicron) to escape from mRNA vaccine-induced antibodies. The variants show differential reductions in neutralization and replication by post-vaccination sera. Although the Omicron variant (BA.1, BA.1.1, and BA.2) shows the most escape from neutralization, sera collected after a third dose of vaccine (booster sera) retain moderate neutralizing activity against that variant. Therefore, vaccination remains an effective strategy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Quantum phase transitions in quantum matter occur at zero temperature between distinct ground states by tuning a nonthermal control parameter. Often, they can be accurately described within the Landau theory of phase transitions, similarly to conventional thermal phase transitions. However, this picture can break down under certain circumstances. Here, we present a comprehensive study of the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the magnetic structure and spin dynamics of the spin-1/2 ladder compound C$_9$H$_{18}$N$_2$CuBr$_4$. Single-crystal heat capacity and neutron diffraction measurements reveal that the N$\rm \acute{e}$el-ordered phase breaks down beyond a critical pressure of $P_{\rm c}$$\sim$1.0 GPa through a continuous quantum phase transition. Estimates of the critical exponents suggest that this transition may fall outside the traditional Landau paradigm. The inelastic neutron scattering spectra at 1.3 GPa are characterized by two well-separated gapped modes, including one continuum-like and another resolution-limited excitation in distinct scattering channels, which further indicates an exotic quantum-disordered phase above $P_{\rm c}$., The revised version includes 10 pages and 5 figures in the main text. In the article, olivine-structured pure LiNiPO4 and yttrium-doped LiNiPO4 powder were prepared by sol-gel method using citric acid as chelating agent. The effect of 1.0 mol% Y doping on the structure and electrochemical properties of LiNiPO4 materials using powder X-ray diffraction pattern, scanning electron microscope, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was investigated. It was found that 1.0 mol% Y doping could induce an increase in lattice parameters and a decrease in particle sizes, which could enlarge lithium-ion diffusion channel, increase carriers concentration, and shorten diffusion lengths, thus decreasing polarization and improving lithium-ion diffusion and conductivity. All those could result in enhanced redox peak current density, decreased charge-transfer resistance, and potential separation between oxidation peak and reduction peak. Y doping could also decrease the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of NiO6 octahedron caused by Jahn-Teller effect, which caused the raises of redox potential.

Polymeric monoliths are of great interest in a variety of applications. A new gelation approach to produce a mechanically stable polystyrene (PS) gel directly from its microemulsion is reported. To produce a PS gel, the as-prepared microemulsion is first demulsified by adding selected water-miscible organic solvents. The small PS latex particles liberated from the surfactant are assembled into a piece of bulk material at an appropriate temperature with a high degree of entanglement of the polymer chains. It is found that the d2T/η value is an important parameter to evaluate the gelation ability of the organic solvents and helps determine the gelation conditions. Finally, PS monoliths are obtained by capillary drying and their pore structures can be effectively tuned by changing the gelation time and the amount of solvent exchanged with water. This allows the controlled preparation of bulk PS artefacts with densities in the range of 0.06 to 1.14 g cm−3. This simple method of PS monolith production avoids the use of shaping tools or chemical templates, needs less energy, and is a promising alternative approach to design either integrated porous or compact polymer materials.

Nanomedicines (NMs) have emerged as an efficient approach for developing novel treatment strategies against a variety of diseases. Over the past few decades, NM formulations have received great attention, and a large number of studies have been performed in this field. Despite this, only about 60 nano-formulations have received industrial acceptance and are currently available for clinical use. Their in vivo pharmaceutical behavior is considered one of the main challenges and hurdles for the effective clinical translation of NMs, because it is difficult to monitor the pharmaceutic fate of NMs in the biological environment using conventional pharmaceutical evaluations. In this context, non-invasive imaging modalities offer attractive solutions, providing the direct monitoring and quantification of the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic behavior of labeled NMs in a real-time manner. Imaging evaluations have great potential for revealing the relationship between the physicochemical properties of NMs and their pharmaceutical profiles in living subjects. In this review, we introduced imaging techniques that can be used for in vivo NM evaluations. We also provided an overview of various studies on the influence of key parameters on the in vivo pharmaceutical behavior of NMs that had been visualized in a non-invasive and real-time manner. In this paper, titanium oxide (TiO2) films were prepared by cathodic electrodeposition using titanium oxysulfate (TiOSO4), potassium nitrate (KNO3), citric acid, and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as reactants. The article investigated the effect of citric acid and deposition temperature on the structure and electrochemical properties of TiO2 films. The results indicated that hydrous TiO2 thin films were prepared at 60°C when no citric acid was added, while thin films containing hydrous TiO2 and anatase phase were fabricated at 60–75°C when citric acid was added. It was found that adding citric acid and raising the reaction temperature (60–75°C) were beneficial to reduce crack width until cracks disappeared. Adding citric acid facilitated phase transition from hydrous TiO2 to anatase. Continuous and uniform TiO2 thin film was prepared at 75°C, which was found to have ideal capacitive behavior with a rectangular cyclic voltammogram and high photocurrent performance with photocurrent 2.89 μA, which is several times higher than that of cracked samples.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a long-term inflammatory disease derived from an autoimmune disorder of the synovial membrane. Current therapeutic strategies for RA mainly aim to hamper the macrophages' proliferation and reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Therefore, the accumulation of therapeutic agents targeted at the inflammatory site should be a crucial therapeutic strategy. Nowadays, the nanocarrier system incorporated with stimuli-responsive property is being intensively studied, showing the potentially tremendous value of specific therapy. Stimuli-responsive (i.e., pH, temperature, light, redox, and enzyme) polymeric nanomaterials, as an important component of nanoparticulate carriers, have been intensively developed for various diseases treatment. A survey of the literature suggests that the use of targeted nanocarriers to deliver therapeutic agents (nanotherapeutics) in the treatment of inflammatory arthritis remains largely unexplored. The lack of suitable stimuli-sensitive polymeric nanomaterials is one of the limitations. Herein, we provide an overview of drug delivery systems prepared from commonly used stimuli-sensitive polymeric nanomaterials and some inorganic agents that have potential in the treatment of RA. The current situation and challenges are also discussed to stimulate a novel thinking about the development of nanomedicine.

In the mining process of deep metal mines, different types of rock mass instability failures are caused by strong mining disturbance. It is beneficial to master the fracture mechanism of rock mass in time to effectively prevent and control the ground pressure disasters. Microseismic signals are generated by the propagation and expansion of cracks inside the rock mass that contain plentiful information about the structural changes of rock mass. The ratio of the radiated energy of S and P waves (Es/Ep) of microseismic events can fast and effectively calculate the rock fracture mechanism, which is widely used for ground pressure hazard risk assessment. In this paper, this method was used to analyze the fracture mechanism of rock mass around deep stope in Hongtoushan copper mine and Ashele copper mine. Furthermore, the spatial distribution characteristics and proportion changes of microseismic events with different fracture mechanisms along with the mining process were studied. The results show that tensile cracks play a dominant role, accounting for 62% of the total events, during non-shear fracturing of the rock mass caused by the stoping unloading effect, while shear cracks occupy 68% of the total events during orebody slip failure. When the physical and mechanical properties of the orebody and rock mass are significantly different, slip failure along their contact zone is prone to occur under blasting disturbance. During deep mining, it is necessary to control the exposed area of the roof by each stoping, especially during the earlier mining stage, to avoid tensile stress concentration. The temporal and spatial variation of tension cracks and shear cracks induced by roof damage obtained in this paper can guide the prevention and control of ground pressure disasters in deep mining effectively.

Although the synaptic alterations associated with the stress-related mood disorder major depression has been well-documented, the underlying transcriptional mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we perform complementary bulk nuclei- and single-nucleus transcriptome profiling and map locus-specific chromatin interactions in mouse neocortex to identify the cell type-specific transcriptional changes associated with stress-induced behavioral maladaptation. We find that cortical excitatory neurons, layer 2/3 neurons in particular, are vulnerable to chronic stress and acquire signatures of gene transcription and chromatin structure associated with reduced neuronal activity and expression of Yin Yang 1 (YY1). Selective ablation of YY1 in cortical excitatory neurons enhances stress sensitivity in both male and female mice and alters the expression of stress-associated genes following an abbreviated stress exposure. These findings demonstrate how chronic stress impacts transcription in cortical excitatory neurons and identify YY1 as a regulator of stress-induced maladaptive behavior in mice., The mechanisms underlying the chronic stress-induced increased risk for major depressive disorder and anxiety are unclear. Here, the authors show the transcriptional changes occurring in neocortical neurons and identify YY1 as a regulator of chronic stress-induced maladaptive behavior in mice.

Among the transition metal oxide catalysts, manganese oxides have great potential for formaldehyde (HCHO) oxidation at ambient temperature because of their high activity, nontoxicity, low cost, and polybasic morphologies. In this work, a MnO2-based catalyst (M-MnO2) with an interconnected network structure was successfully synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method. The M-MnO2 catalyst was composed of the main catalytic agent, δ-MnO2 nanosheets, dispersed in a nonactive framework material of γ-MnOOH nanowires. The catalytic activity of M-MnO2 for HCHO oxidation at room temperature was much higher than that of the pure δ-MnO2 nanosheets. This is attributed to the special interconnected network structure. The special interconnected network structure has high dispersion and specific surface area, which can provide more surface active oxygen species and higher surface hydroxyl groups to realize rapid decomposition of HCHO.

Background A history of abdominal biliary tract surgery has been identified as a relative contraindication for laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE), and there are very few reports about laparoscopic procedures in patients with a history of abdominal biliary tract surgery. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the clinical outcomes of 227 consecutive patients with previous abdominal biliary tract operations at our institution between December 2013 and June 2019. A total of 110 consecutive patients underwent LCBDE, and 117 consecutive patients underwent open common bile duct exploration (OCBDE). Patient demographics and perioperative variables were compared between the two groups. Results The LCBDE group performed significantly better than the OCBDE group with respect to estimated blood loss [30 (5–700) vs. 50 (10–1800) ml; p = 0.041], remnant common bile duct (CBD) stones (17 vs. 28%; p = 0.050), postoperative hospital stay [7 (3–78) vs. 8.5 (4.5–74) days; p = 0.041], and time to oral intake [2.5 (1–7) vs. 3 (2–24) days; p = 0.015]. There were no significant differences in the operation time [170 (60–480) vs. 180 (41–330) minutes; p = 0.067]. A total of 19 patients (17%) in the LCBDE group were converted to open surgery. According to Clavien’s classification of complications, the LCBDE group had significantly fewer postoperative complications than the OCBDE group (40 vs. 57; p = 0.045). There was no mortality in either group. Multiple previous operations (≥ 2 times), a history of open surgery, and previous biliary tract surgery (including bile duct or gallbladder + bile duct other than cholecystectomy alone) were risk factors for postoperative adhesion (p = 0.000, p = 0.000, and p = 0.000, respectively). Conclusion LCBDE is ultimately the least invasive, safest, and the most effective treatment option for patients with previous abdominal biliary tract operations and is especially suitable for those with a history of cholecystectomy, few previous operations (

Conventional carbon materials cannot combine high density and high porosity, which are required in many applications, typically for energy storage under a limited space. A novel highly dense yet porous carbon has previously been produced from a three-dimensional (3D) reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) hydrogel by evaporation-induced drying. Here the mechanism of such a network shrinkage in r-GO hydrogel is specifically illustrated by the use of water and 1,4-dioxane, which have a sole difference in surface tension. As a result, the surface tension of the evaporating solvent determines the capillary forces in the nanochannels, which causes shrinkage of the r-GO network. More promisingly, the selection of a solvent with a known surface tension can precisely tune the microstructure associated with the density and porosity of the resulting porous carbon, rendering the porous carbon materials great potential in practical devices with high volumetric performance.

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDSs) refractory or relapsed after hypomethylating agents (HMAs) remain a therapeutic challenge. The CHG regimen has been demonstrated to be effective in initially treating higher risk MDS. The current study evaluated the efficacy and toxicity of the CHG regimen in patients who were resistant to decitabine. Patients with higher risk MDS relapsed or refractory to decitabine were enrolled in this study. Each patient received the CHG regimen (cytarabine (25 mg/day, days 1–14) and homoharringtonine (1 mg/day, days 1–14) intravenously with G-CSF (300 μg/day) subcutaneously from day 0 until neutrophil count recovery to 2.0 × 109 cells/L). Next gene sequencing with a 31-gene panel was carried out in patients. Thirty-three patients were enrolled, including 12 relapsed and 21 refractory cases. The overall response rate (ORR) was 39.4% (13 of 33), with 9 (27.3%) achieving complete remission (CR), 2 having marrow CR (mCR), and 2 achieving partial remission (PR). The CR rate was higher in patients harboring fewer gene mutations (0–1) (55.6%) than in those with more gene mutations (> 1) (12.5%) (p = 0.021). The median overall survival (OS) of the 33 patients was 7.0 months. As one kind of promising anode materials for Li-ion batteries, titanium niobium oxides have attracted great attention due to their high theoretical capacities and high rate performances. Herein, TiNb6O17/C composite with TiNb6O17 nanocrystals distributed among amorphous carbon has been synthesized via an in situ sol–gel and then thermal decomposition process. The as-synthesized TiNb6O17/C composite presents reduced crystal size and improved electronic conductivity compared with the pristine TiNb6O17. The TiNb6O17/C displays both excellent rate performance (high specific capacity of 129 mA h g−1 at 30 C) and good cyclic performance (low capacity decay rate of 0.016% per cycle for 500 cycles at 10 C). These results indicate that the approach as reported is a simple yet effective way for high-performance anode with high-rate capability.

Mutations in the U2 small nuclear RNA auxiliary factor 1 (U2AF1) gene are the common feature of a major subset in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). However, the genetic landscape and molecular pathogenesis of oncogenic U2AF1S34F mutation in MDS are not totally understood. We performed comprehensive analysis for prognostic significance of U2AF1 mutations in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cohort based on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Functional analysis of U2AF1S34F mutation was performed in vitro. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and significantly enriched pathways were identified by RNA sequencing. The forkhead box protein O3a (FOXO3a) was investigated to mediate the function of U2AF1S34F mutation in cell models using lentivirus. Chromatin immunoprecipitation, immunoblotting analyses, and immunofluorescence assays were also conducted. U2AF1 mutations were associated with poor prognosis in MDS and AML samples, which significantly inhibited cell proliferation and induced cellular apoptosis in cell models. Our data identified that U2AF1-mutant cell lines undergo FOXO3a-dependent apoptosis and NLRP3 inflammasome activation, which induces pyroptotic cell death. Particularly, an increase in the level of FOXO3a promoted the progression of MDS in association with restored autophagy program leading to NLRP3 inflammasome activation in response to U2AF1S34F mutation. Based on the result that U2AF1S34F mutation promoted the transcriptional activity of Bim through upregulating FOXO3a with transactivation of cell cycle regulators p21Cip1 and p27Kip1, FOXO3a, a potentially cancer-associated transcription factor, was identified as the key molecule on which these pathways converge. Overall, our studies provide new insights that U2AF1S34F mutation functions the crucial roles in mediating MDS disease progression via FOXO3a activation, and demonstrate novel targets of U2AF1 mutations to the pathogenesis of MDS.

We employ the Lippmann-Schwinger formalism to derive the analytical solutions of the transmission and reflection coefficients through a one-dimensional open quantum system, in which particle loss or gain on one lattice site located at x = 0, or particle loss and gain on the lattice sites located at $$x = \pm {\textstyle{L \over 2}}$$ are considered respectively. The gain and loss on the lattice site are modeled by the delta potential with positive and negative imaginary values. The analytical solution reveals the underlying physics that the sum of the transmission and reflection coefficients through an open quantum system (even a $${\cal P}{\cal T}$$ -symmetric open system) may not be 1, i.e., qualitatively explains that the number of particles is not conserved in an open quantum system. Furthermore, we find that the resonance states can be formed in the $${\cal P}{\cal T}$$ -symmetric delta potential, which is similar to the case of real delta potential. The results of our analysis can be treated as the starting point of studying quantum transport problems through a non-Hermitian system using Green’s function method, and more general cases for high-dimensional systems may be deduced by the same procedure.

This study examined kindergarten teachers’ attitudes toward and confidence with implementing integrated STEM education in early childhood classroom settings. Data were collected through a self-report survey completed by 430 kindergarten teachers across China, as well as face-to-face interviews with 14 teachers from six provinces. The results revealed that the participating kindergarten teachers tended to have positive attitudes toward early childhood STEM education. However, the majority of the kindergarten teachers were not confident with implementing STEM education in their classroom settings. Regional differences were evident in the data: Kindergarten teachers from eastern region of China reported a higher level of confidence than teachers from central and western regions. Moreover, kindergarten teachers’ years of teaching experience and level of education were not found to be associated with their attitudes toward or confidence with STEM education. This paper concludes with a discussion of the potential challenges for STEM education in Chinese kindergartens based on the findings from this study. Implications and suggestions for future research are proposed.

In this article, SnO2/carbon composites were prepared by hydrothermal electrochemical method. Stannous chloride dihydrate (SnCl2·H2O) and glucose were used as Sn sources and carbon sources, respectively. Effects of the molar ratio of glucose/SnCl2 on structure, morphology, and properties of the composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, FTIR, SEM, and cyclic voltammetry. Results indicated that SnO2 had the tetragonal rutile structure and carbon was diamond like carbon (DLC) structure. It was observed that the morphology and electrochemical properties of samples were affected by the molar ratio of glucose/SnCl2. Increasing the molar ratio of glucose/SnCl2 induced grain shape change from cube to spherical, decrease in grain size and increase of cyclic reversibility. When the molar ratio of glucose/SnCl2 was 100%, 100 nm spherical SnO2/carbon composites could be prepared by hydrothermal electrochemical method, which had a pair of redox peaks, and the peak positions were − 0.32/− 0.14 V and − 0.18/0.10 V at 5 mV/s in 1 M LiOH solution. At various scanning rates, there was little variation in the oxidation/reduction peak positions. It was considered to be a promising material for fast and reversible Li-ion alloying and de-alloying.

Background Electrospun (e-spun) nanofibers for wound dressing have attracted wide attention due to its large specific surface area, large porosity and breathability. Compared with solution electrospinning (e-spinning), melt e-spinning is more bio-friendly without toxic solvent participation, which provides the possibility of in situ e-spinning on wounds directly. However, previously reported melt e-spinning devices were usually bulky and cumbersome due to their necessary heating unit, and different components were separated to avoid electrostatic interference. Results In this article, we report on a self-powered hand-held melt e-spinning gun which can work without any external power supply (outdoors). The problem of electrostatic interference for this integrated device was solved by using a special high heat transfer insulation unit. The apparatus is easy and safe to operate by a single hand due to its small volume (24 × 6 × 13 cm3) and light weight (about 450 g). Some biodegradable polymers, for example, polycaprolactone (PCL) fibers were successful e-spun onto wounds directly by using this dressing gun. Conclusions PCL fibrous membrane has good biocompatibility and can be in situ electrospun to wound surface as a wound dressing by the portable melt e-spinning gun. Besides wound dressing, this hand-held melt e-spinning gun may be used in 3D printing and experimental teaching demonstration aids.

Background Acute lung injury (ALI) and/or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are critical life-threatening syndromes characterized by the infiltration of a large number of granulocytes (mainly neutrophils) that lead to an excessive inflammatory response. Emodin (Emo) is a naturally occurring anthraquinone derivative and an active ingredient of Chinese medicine. It is believed to have anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, we examined the impact of Emo on the pulmonary inflammatory response and the granulocytes function in a rat model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI. Results Treatment with Emo protected rat against LPS-induced ALI. Compared to untreated rat, Emo-treated rat exhibited significantly ameliorated lung pathological changes and decreased tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). However, Emo has no protective effect on the rat model of acute lung injury with granulocyte deficiency. In addition, treatment with Emo enhanced the bactericidal capacity of LPS-induced granulocytes via the up-regulation of the ability of granulocytes to phagocytize bacteria and generate neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). Emo also downregulated the respiratory burst and the expression of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in LPS-stimulated granulocytes, alleviating the damage of granulocytes to surrounding tissues. Finally, Emo can accelerate the resolution of inflammation by promoting apoptosis of granulocytes. Conclusion Our results provide the evidence that Emo could ameliorates LPS-induced ALI via its anti-inflammatory action by modulating the function of granulocytes. Emo may be a promising preventive and therapeutic agent in the treatment of ALI.

In this paper, LiNiPO4 powders were prepared by sol gel method using citric acid as chelating agent. The article investigated the effect of annealing temperature and citric acid: Li molar ratio (cit/Li) on the structure and electrochemical properties of LiNiPO4 material. The results indicated that pure Pnma LiNiPO4 phase was synthesized at 700 and 800 °C. It was found that the increase of annealing temperature and cit/Li induced rod-to-sphere transition. The particles sizes increased with increasing annealing temperature, while the particles sizes were increasing firstly and then decreasing with increasing the ratio of cit/Li. Decreasing particles sizes had an advantage of both decreasing the charge transfer resistance (Rct) and improving the reversible capacity of pure olivine LiNiPO4 samples. Spherical particles (100–200 nm) prepared at 700 °C with cit/Li molar ratio of 2:1 were found to have low resistance, high electrochemical reversibility, cycle stability.

The practical application of lithium-sulfur batteries with a high energy density has been plagued by the poor cycling stability of the sulfur cathode, which is a result of the insulating nature of sulfur and the dissolution of polysulfides. Much work has been done to construct nanostructured or doped carbon as a porous or polar host for promising sulfur cathodes, although restricting the polysulfide shuttle effect by improving the redox reaction kinetics is more attractive. Herein, we present a well-designed strategy by introducing graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) into a three-dimensional hierarchical porous graphene assembly to achieve a synergistic combination of confinement and catalyzation of polysulfides. The porous g-C3N4 nanosheets in situ formed inside the graphene network afford a highly accessible surface to catalyze the transformation of polysulfides, and the hierarchical porous graphene-assembled carbon can function as a conductive network and provide appropriate space for g-C3N4 catalysis in the sulfur cathode. Thus, this hybrid can effectively improve sulfur utilization and block the dissolution of polysulfides, achieving excellent cycling performance for sulfur cathodes in lithium-sulfur batteries.
