It is challenging to assess the prognosis of patients with severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) after large decompressive craniectomy (DC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical value of transcranial color-coded duplex sonography (TCCD) for assessing the prognosis of sTBI patients 6 months after large DC.This was a retrospective observational study that consecutively enrolled 84 patients with sTBI who were followed up for prognosis until 6 months after large DC. The primary endpoint was the Glasgow Outcome Score (GOS). According to the GOS, patients were divided into an unfavorable prognosis group (GOS 1-3, n = 47) and a favorable prognosis group (GOS 4-5, n = 37).Significant between-group differences were found in age and hemodynamic parameters (systolic peak blood flow velocity, end-diastolic blood flow velocity, mean blood flow velocity, pulsatility index and resistance index) of the middle cerebral artery detected by TCCD (P 0.05 for all). Subsequently, ridge regression was used to build a prognostic model for patients with large DC. Based on the cerebral hemodynamic parameters measured by TCCD and age, the mean (± standard deviation) area under the curve of the prognostic model in patients with sTBI after large DC was 0.76 ± 0.22. The sensitivity and specificity were 82.08% and 74.17%, respectively.The cerebral hemodynamic parameters detected by TCCD, combined with age, may be used to predict the outcomes of patients with sTBI at 6 months after large DC. As a noninvasive method, TCCD has the potential to assess the prognosis of these patients.ChiCTR: ChiCTR1800019758. An accumulating number of studies have highlighted the importance of interpersonal neural synchronization (INS) between interlocutors in successful verbal communications. The opportunities for communication across different language contexts are rapidly expanding, thanks to the frequent interactions among people all over the world. However, whether the INS changes in different language contexts and how language choice affects the INS remain scarcely explored. The study recruited twenty pairs of participants to communicate in the first language (L1), second language (L2) and interlingual contexts. Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), we examined the neural activities of interlocutors and analyzed their wavelet transform coherence to assess the INS of dyads. Results showed that as compared to the resting state, stronger INS was observed at the left inferior temporal gyrus, middle temporal gyrus, pre-motor and supplementary motor cortex, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and inferior frontal gyrus in L1; at the left middle temporal gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, and inferior frontal gyrus in L2; at the left inferior temporal gyrus and inferior frontal gyrus in interlingual context. Additionally, INS at the left inferior frontal gyrus was significantly stronger in L2 than in L1. These findings reveal the differences of the INS in different language contexts and confirm the importance of language choice for the INS changes.

The performance enhancement of integrated circuits relying on dimension scaling (i.e., following Moore’s Law) is more and more challenging owing to the physical limit of Si materials. Monolithic three-dimensional (M3D) integration has been considered as a powerful scheme to further boost up the system performance. Two-dimensional (2D) materials such as MoS2 are potential building blocks for constructing upper-tier transistors owing to their high mobility, atomic thickness, and back-end-of-line (BEOL) compatible processes. The concept to integrate 2D material-based devices with Si field-effect transistor (FET) is technologically important but the compatibility is yet to be experimentally demonstrated. Here, we successfully integrated an n-type monolayer MoS2 FET on a p-type Si fin-shaped FET with 20 nm fin width via an M3D integration technique to form a complementary inverter. The integration was enabled by deliberately adopting industrially matured techniques, such as chemical mechanical planarization and e-beam evaporation, to ensure its compatibility with the existing 3D integrated circuit process and the semiconductor industry in general. The 2D FET is fabricated using low-temperature sequential processes to avoid the degradation of lower-tier Si devices. The MoS2 n-FETs and Si p-FinFETs display symmetrical transfer characteristics and the resulting 3D complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor inverter show a voltage transfer characteristic with a maximum gain of ~38. This work clearly proves the integration compatibility of 2D materials with Si-based devices, encouraging the further development of monolithic 3D integrated circuits.

Objective To determine the impact of smoking on disease-specific health care utilization and medical costs in patients with chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Methods Participants were middle-aged and elderly adults with chronic NCDs from a prospective cohort in China. Logistic regressions and linear models were used to assess the relationship between tobacco smoking, health care utilization and medical costs. Results Totally, 1020 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), 3144 patients with coronary heart disease (CHD), and 1405 patients with diabetes were included in the analysis. Among patients with COPD, current smokers (β: 0.030, 95% CI: −0.032–0.092) and former smokers (β: 0.072, 95% CI: 0.014–0.131) had 3.0% and 7.2% higher total medical costs than never smokers. Medical costs of patients who had smoked for 21–40 years (β: 0.028, 95% CI:−0.038–0.094) and ≥41 years (β: 0.053, 95% CI: −0.004β0.110) were higher than those of never smokers. Patients who smoked ≥21 cigarettes (β: 0.145, 95% CI: 0.051–0.239) per day had more inpatient visits than never smokers. The association between smoking and health care utilization and medical costs in people with CHD group was similar to that in people with COPD; however, there were no significant associations in people with diabetes. Conclusion This study reveals that the impact of smoking on health care utilization and medical costs varies among patients with COPD, CHD, and diabetes. Tobacco control might be more effective at reducing the burden of disease for patients with COPD and CHD than for patients with diabetes.

Maternal nutrition plays a critical role in energy metabolism of offspring. We aim to elucidate the effect of long-term intermittent fasting (IF) before pregnancy on health outcomes of offspring. Here we show long-term IF before pregnancy disrupts intestinal homeostasis of offspring with subsequent disorder of glucose and lipid metabolism. This occurs through the reduction in beneficial microbiota such as Lactobacillus_intestinalis. Our observations further support the concept that intestinal microbiota in offspring is vulnerable to maternal nutrition, and its homeostasis is critical for the integrity of intestinal barrier and metabolic homeostasis.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) increases the risk of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). This study investigates the association between glucose control of COVID-19 patients with T2D in first 7 days after hospital admission and prognosis. A total of 252 infected inpatients with T2D in China were included. Well-controlled blood glucose was defined as stable fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels in the range of 3.9–7.8 mmol/L during first 7 days using indicators of average (FBGA), maximum (FBGM) or first-time (FBG1) FBG levels. The primary endpoint was admission to intensive care unit or death. Hazard ratio (HR) of poorly controlled glucose level group compared with well-controlled group were 4.96 (P = 0.021) for FBGM and 5.55 (P = 0.014) for FBGA. Well-controlled blood glucose levels in first 7 days could improve the prognosis of COVID-19 inpatients with diabetes.

Abstract Existing systems have disadvantages such as slow running speed, long time-consuming, and poor rendering effect in virtual reconstruction of architectural spatial structure. In order to solve such problems, virtual reconstruction system of building space structure is designed using laser 3D scanning technology under condition of fusion of multiple big data. The system was equipped with a 3D laser scanner and connected to computer, and the noise interference was reduced by image preprocessing module to complete the hardware design. The system improved user interface and maintenance module. Eventually, 3D model reconstruction was realized via data acquisition, data registration, coordinate transformation and 3D rendering. The results show that the system designed in this paper runs fast, and color of reconstruction results is consistent, which indicates that reconstruction results of building space structure obtained by the system are conducive to in-depth study of building space.

The purpose of this study was to explore the correlations between patients’ opioid-taking self-efficacy, social support, and their pain management satisfaction, and to evaluate the effect of social support and opioid-taking self-efficacy in explaining the variance in pain management satisfaction. We used a cross-sectional and correlational research design and recruited 123 cancer patients via convenience sampling. We used the following instruments: the Opioid-Taking Self-Efficacy Scale, the Inventory of Socially Supportive Behavior, and the Chinese version of the Pain Treatment Satisfaction Scale. 6G is believed to go beyond communication and provide integrated sensing and computing capabilities for a vision of Connected Intelligence with everything connected, everything sensed, and everything intelligent. Integrated sensing and communication will play a vital role for the fusion of physical and cyber worlds. The exploration of higher frequency bands, larger bandwidth, and more advanced large antenna technologies is paving the way towards the goal. In particular, the study of THz opens the possibility to have high resolution sensing and imaging capability on a communication mobile device. In this paper, we take a step along this direction and justify such possibility by building a THz sensing prototype with millimeter level imaging resolution while considering the physical aperture constraint of typical mobile device.

Malignant brain tumors consist of malignancies originated primarily within the brain and the metastatic lesions disseminated from other organs. In spite of intensive studies, malignant brain tumors remain to be a medical challenge. Patient-derived organoid (PDO) can recapitulate the biological features of the primary tumor it was derived from and has emerged as a promising drug-screening model for precision therapy. Here we show a proof-of-concept based on early clinical study entailing the organoids derived from the surgically resected tumors of 26 patients with advanced malignant brain tumors enrolled during December 2020 to October 2021. The tumors included nine glioma patients, one malignant meningioma, one primary lymphoma patient, and 15 brain metastases. The primary tumor sites of the metastases included five from the lungs, three from the breasts, two from the ovaries, two from the colon, one from the testis, one of melanoma origin, and one of chondrosarcoma. Out of the 26 tissues, 13 (50%) organoids were successfully generated with a culture time of about 2 weeks. Among these patients, three were further pursued to have the organoids derived from their tumor tissues tested for the sensitivity to different therapeutic drugs in parallel to their clinical care. Our results showed that the therapeutic effects observed by the organoid models were consistent to the responses of these patients to their treatments. Our study suggests that PDO can recapitulate patient responses in the clinic with high potential of implementation in personalized medicine of malignant brain tumors.

Background Circular RNAs (circRNAs) represent a class of newly identified transcripts that act as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) to modulate gene expression by competing for the shared microRNAs (miRNAs) in humans. In this study, we set out to investigate the role of the circRNA-miRNA-mRNA ceRNA network in gastric cancer (GC). Methods A differential analysis on GC-related circRNAs, miRNAs and mRNAs was performed utilizing the R language “limma” package, followed by GO and KEGG enrichment analyses. The Cytoscape visualization software was used to construct the circRNA-miRNA-mRNA ceRNA network. RT-qPCR, Western blot assay, immunohistochemistry, RNA pull down, RIP and dual luciferase gene reporter assay were conducted to verify the expression of the related circRNA, miRNA and mRNA and their interaction in GC tissues and cells. Results The bioinformatics analysis screened 13 circRNAs, 241 miRNAs and 7483 mRNAs related to GC. Ten DEmRNAs (AURKA, BUB1, CCNF, FEN1, FGF2, ITPKB, CDKN1A, TRIP13, KNTC1 and KIT) were identified from the constructed PPI network and module analysis, among which AURKA was the most critical. A circ_0061265-miRNA-885-3p-AURKA ceRNA network was constructed. In vitro cell experiment demonstrated significantly upregulated circ_0061265 and AURKA, but downregulated miR-885-3p in GC. Moreover, circ_0061265 promoted the occurrence of GC by competitively binding to miRNA-885-3p to regulate AURKA expression. Conclusion Our work validated that circ_0061265 may increase AURKA expression by competitively binding to miRNA-885-3p, thereby promoting GC development.
