Abstract

Freeform surfaces have become an inevitable part of biomedical industries to carry out their specific task. Proper finishing of these surfaces is required to meet their high surface characteristics. The biomedical implants (made of biocompatible materials) such as shoulder, knee, ankle, finger, and hip joints require nanofinishing on the mating surfaces for their proper functionality and durability. The finishing of these implants is challenging because of their complex shapes and intricate features. Especially in conventional finishing processes, the rigid tool is used, which is mostly incapable of finishing the inaccessible areas of biomedical implants. Some advanced finishing processes have been developed which use flexible cutting tools to finish the freeform surfaces. These processes are suitable for micro/nanofinishing of biomedical components which enhance operational life as well as product value of the biomedical implants. This chapter discusses some of the advanced finishing processes, their applications, and advantages in biomedical industries.

Abstract

The scarcity in availability of suitable land and the associated huge costs for construction of deep and large foundations supporting tall superstructures have compelled engineers across the globe to resort to numerous ground improvement techniques to improve the subsoil properties. With the emphasis on sustainable construction practices and waste management techniques gaining attention worldwide, research towards the same to alleviate engineering problems has witnessed a surge. Therefore, the use of industrial, common and construction wastes for enhancement of structural properties in fresh construction is being studied widely. Similarly, utilizing shredded waste tire chips as reinforcement in soil has shown promising results. In the present study, cyclic model footing load tests are performed on square footing supported by a sand bed reinforced with randomly distributed waste tire chips in a square tank. Various intensities of cyclic loads (loading, unloading, and reloading) are applied on the model footing and subsequently, the elastic rebound of the footing corresponding to each intensity of loading and the pattern of variation of the coefficient of elastic uniform compression (Cu) of reinforced sand are assessed. The influence of different percentages of tire chips (5–40%) is analyzed by randomly mixing them in the soil medium at 70% equivalent relative density for a depth of up to the width of the footing. The results indicate that tire chip addition can significantly improve the bearing capacity as well as the coefficient of elastic uniform compression and this improvement can further be enhanced on an increase in the percentage of reinforcement (improvement of up to 50% is observed).

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify and analyze the enablers of humanitarian supply chain management (HSCM). This study identifies 12 HSCM enablers (HSCMEs) for the efficient and effective HSCM implementation. Interpretive structural modeling (ISM) is used to analyze the relationship among the identified HSCMEs. Strategic planning followed by capacity planning and financial planning are the important HSCMEs. The findings of this study help to academicians, managers, humanitarian agencies, humanitarian logisticians and NGOs to implement efficient and effective HSCM with proper planning.

Abstract

In this work, energy is harvested from circular piezoelectric materials with different boundary conditions under dynamic loading. The output of the proposed system is investigated by connecting piezo with full wave bridge rectifier (FWBR) and voltage doubler (VD) circuits. The proposed setup can be used to apply dynamic load with varying magnitude. The boundaries of the circular piezoelectric material are 3D printed using Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) material with FDM 3D printing machine to fabricate its simple support (SS), fixed support (FS) and circular support (CS). The proposed setup utilizes a stepper motor, a display unit, a load sensor, eccentric mechanism to convert rotary motion into reciprocating motion, power supply and a compatible circuit on the printed circuit board. It is observed experimentally that the energy harvested is maximum, in case of circular support among the three applied boundary conditions and validated mathematically. The output response of the circular support boundary condition is analyzed using various combinations of three input parameters, i.e., varying dynamic load, number of strokes, two circuits and a total number of 120 experiments were performed. Artificial neural network has been applied for modeling and training between input three parameters and one output response, i.e., energy harvested. Further, genetic algorithm is applied on the ANN model to maximize the output of the system w.r.t input parameters and experimentally validated. As number of strokes (26) at dynamic load of 44 N with circular supported piezo patch connected with voltage doubler circuit gives the maximum output of 16.09 V further, when the system is tested on these parameters experimentally, it gives the 15.26 V.

With the increasing demand for renewable energy sources and the huge gap between the demand and supply conditions, measures have been implemented to enhance the productivity of the existing renewable energy sources. The sun supplies an ample amount of light and heat, which can be converted into abundant and safer solar energy. Photovoltaic (PV) cells can be employed for the conversion of abundant solar energy to useful electricity. But the issue of heating up of the PV cells drastically reduces the conversion efficiency of the system. Hence, there is a need for some additional arrangement to this system that can arrest the temperature rise of PV. This paper is a review of such systems that employ eutectic for the thermal regulation of the PV panel. It is a passive cooling technique which can be utilized very easily and cheaply .

Abstract

Iron (Fe) is an essential nutrient for life and the fourth most abundant element in the earth. The availability of ferric iron (Fe III) is less in soil solution due to the low solubility of ferric hydroxides, oxides, and oxyhydroxides. Therefore, the Fe availability to microbes and plants is limited, albeit its abundance in the environment. Therefore, the availability of Fe to microbes and plants has evolved strategies based on acidification through proton extrusion and organic acid production, chelation, ligands like siderophore and phytosiderophore production, and enzymatic reduction involving reductase enzymes. This review attempts to explain the fungal siderophore, its biosynthesis, transport, and practical application. Thus, siderophore is an iron-binding molecule synthesized by fungi, bacteria, cyanobacteria, and plants. The common types of siderophore are hydroxamates, catecholates, carboxylates, but hydroxamate type is dominant in fungi. L-ornithine is a biosynthetic precursor of siderophore and synthesized through multimodular large enzymes complex nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPSs) dependent/independent. Siderophore-Fe chelators protein (FIT1, FIT2, and FIT3) helps in the retention of siderophore. Saccharomyces cerevisiae expresses two genetically separate systems (reductive and a non-reductive system) at the plasma membrane, which converts Fe III into Fe II by ferrous-specific metallo-reductases enzyme complex, FRE reductases. Regulation of the siderophore gene expression on the promoter region by Fur Box protein depends on the availability of Fe in the external medium. Biotechnologically, it is more important due to its wide range of applications that include medical, remediation of heavy metal, biocontrol of plant pathogens, and enzyme inhibitions.
