Abstract

The plethora of RNA-seq data which have been generated in the recent years constitutes an attractive resource to investigate HLA variation and its relationship with normal and disease phenotypes, such as cancer. However, next generation sequencing (NGS) brings new challenges to HLA analysis because of the mapping bias introduced by aligning short reads originated from polymorphic genes to a single reference genome. Here we describe HLApers, a pipeline which adapts widely used tools for analysis of standard RNA-seq data to infer HLA genotypes and estimate expression. By generating reliable expression estimates for each HLA allele that an individual carries, HLApers allows a better understanding of the relationship between HLA alleles and phenotypes manifested by an individual.

Abstract

Since power harvesting applications are often constrained by the low levels of power available from individual energy transducers, it is essential for energy converters to efficiently deal with multiple independent and heterogeneous sources. This paper will present two actively controlled power conversion schemes able to deal with multiple piezoelectric and radio-frequency (RF) energy sources. Both converters are based on active control and make use of an ultra-low power standard microcontroller unit. The intrinsic power consumption of the harvesters are respectively 5.5 and 6.8μW per source. The power harvesters were characterized with commercial piezoelectric transducers and with a custom designed rectenna. The achieved values of harvested power of tens of μW show that active control boosts performance of at least +41% as a worst case at the expense of a negligible intrinsic power consumption.

Abstract

Community planning groups and program managers have the difficult task of managing limited resources when they fund HIV prevention. They attempt to identify and reach target audiences within a geographic area with a variety of prevention programs, including counseling, testing, and community education. Their task involves allocating scarce resources among the interventions and the target populations. Those resources are not adequate to fund all interventions to all the target populations that could benefit, so the problem is one of selecting the most effective methods of preventing HIV infections at the least cost.
