Abstract

Inaccessible and isolated locations pose several problems to access scientific community onto a Grid infrastructure and satellite platforms could be the only practical way to provide connectivity. On the other hands, when an IP-based network is used to interconnect these sites, it is well known that standard Interned congestion control protocols (such as TCP and TFRC) underutilize the satellite and introduce non-negligible delays during the startup phase due to the large bandwidth-delay product of satellite links. In addition, the loss of performance is even more important when a Bandwidth on Demand (BoD) mechanism is adopted to satisfy bandwidth requirements. In this paper, we presented a novel mechanism based on quick-start, a recent IETF proposal, to enhance the performance of multimedia streaming applications at the beginning of connection or after long idle periods. Extensive simulations reveal that our modified QS algorithm (QSD) reduces significantly the initial end-to-end delay and stabilizes the queue length of source transmission buffers. Furthermore, we show that the startup delay is independent of the flow rate, which permits to support the bulk flows of grid computing applications.

As we described in Chapter 1, ATM provides the backbone technology for satellite networks due to its major advantages of providing traffic management and Quality of Service provisioning for real-time and non-real-time services. This chapter describes satellite ATM architecures for fixed and mobile users including bent pipe and onboard processing satellites. Various traffic management functions and virtual source/virtual destination for ABR service and its performance, and satellite ATM security issues are described.

Abstract

The unique characteristics of satellite systems, wider coverage and broadcasting capabilities, support broadbad applications ad services in rural and remote areas. Satellite systems are independent of distance, which enables them to be cost-effective for global coverage for point-to-multipoint broadcasting services. Broadband satellite systems and hybrid satellite/terrestrial networks are suitable for providing multimedia applications and Internet services for both fixed and mobile users. Before we described the satellite systems, design challenges, and performance issues, it is important to understand the principles of satellite networks. This chapter describes the basics of satellite networks including orbits and coverage, frequencies, network topologies, and satellite services.
