This chapter will outline the challenges in platform development for digital consumer home devices delivering multimedia content and novel services and applications. It will detail the requirements on this market and the approaches taken by Philips Semiconductors when developing the Nexperia-Digital Video Platform. The Nexperia-Digital Video Platform (Nexperia-DVP) comprises a family of Systems on a Chip (SoCs) and a software platform that allows Philips’ customers to build cost effective, flexible Digital Video appliances.

The management platform development environment is a collection of applications programming interfaces and development tools which allow the development of management applications which run)p of the platform. These applications use the run-time platform services described in chapters 4 through 9. The APIs and tools which comprise the development environment are each built around specific run-time services; therefore the development environment mirrors the run-time environment. In order to develop matrices of capabilities/features, each category of development tools will be analyzed.
