The purpose of presenting these case reports is to highlight the occurrence of heterotopic glial tissue of the tongue and nose in children. So far, literature review has revealed few case reports of such lesions in neonates, but our patients presented with this unique lesion at the age of two and a half years and 3 years. This is a rare congenital anomaly in the tongue, which can mimic a lingual thyroid, teratoma, dermoid cyst etc. Surgical excision is mandatory when the lesion causes obstructive symptoms. The authors discuss the problems in diagnosis, pathology and management and review the literature.

65 year old male presented to us with swelling on right side of neck which was progressively increasing since last 1 year. Moving with deglutition but not with the protrusion of tongue, FNAC and ultrasonography of the swelling suggested possibility of thyroglossal cyst (TGD). Histopathological report, on removal, by Sistrunk operation confirmed the same. Presence of TGD at the ripe age of 65 years, huge size, multilobular nature and absence of classical signs of TGD, in our patient prompted us to report this case.

Complete excision of the thyroglossal cyst consists of removal of the cyst, the entire tract and the midportion of the hyoid bone through which the tract passes. If this principle is followed, recurrence is extremely unlikely. While the procedure is easily performed in native tissue, dissection is much more difficult in a previously infected cyst. Therefore, postponement of the surgical procedure is not to be recommended once the diagnosis has been made.

Eighty-five percent of these were papillary carcinomas. Controversies exist concerning its nature and treatment. In this report, we present an 11-year-old boy with an anterior cervical cystic mass originating in the thyroglossal duct. After a primary Sistrunk procedure, the cyst and tract extending to the foramen caecum at the base of the tongue in continuity with the midportion of the hyoid bone were resected. Histopathologic study demonstrated a papillary carcinoma. After 4 months of follow-up, the patient is asymptomatic without any evidence of recurrence. The clinical and histopathological features and therapeutic options are discussed.
